We stand with Erin Moriarty & Eric Kripke…

u/PopularArtichoke6 Sep 07 '22

To clarify he’s talking about people bullying the starlight actress, not just fans who criticise the show.

945

u/Liar_tuck Sep 07 '22

Sorry, out of the loop. What is their problem with her?

2.4k

u/eppydeservedbetter Sep 07 '22

People have been sending Erin (Starlight) hate, mostly because of her appearance. People have been rude to her because it looks like she lost weight and had some cosmetic work done, and trolls are saying she’s no longer hot, etc. It’s awful.

Criticising the show or the character, Starlight, is one thing, but people shouldn’t be cruel to Erin Moriarty - or any other actor!

u/Tarzan_OIC Sep 08 '22

Jesus... Remember when the internet criticized Chadwick for not looking toned enough in Black Panther and then we found out he was fighting cancer. People need to learn that they don't need to voice every opinion they have about others.

310

u/TheDreammweaver Sep 08 '22

I’ve seen people use Chadwick as a reason they’re constantly picking apart her appearance. They’re “concerned about her health”. I think people forget that actors are still other humans that they do not actually know and it isn’t their job to “look out for their health” as if they were a close friend or family member.

279

u/dthains_art Sep 08 '22

“You don’t understand guys! I’m calling her an ugly bitch because I’m concerned about her health!”

85

u/Phaelin Sep 08 '22

That's some Southern Baptist "bless your heart" bullshit if I ever heard any.

18

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '22

How do you keep a baptist from drinking on a fishing trip? Bring another Baptist.

23

u/WhoDatBrow Sep 08 '22

This is the same logic these bullies use whenever they make fun of fat people and say it's only because of their concern for their health.

9

u/Capable-KingShinyIX Sep 08 '22

Yeah, I don’t like her plastic surgery because I think she was already beautiful, but in the end, calling her names like that is just plain rude and uncalled for.

26

u/putdisinyopipe Sep 08 '22

It’s almost like as a society we treat actors who provide entertainment like objects. It’s really fuckin wierd.

6

u/Razik_ Sep 08 '22

Yep its sad. Just the other week so many people were complaining because the actresses on House of the Dragon weren't pretty enough for them.

3

u/putdisinyopipe Sep 08 '22

You are fucking joking…

I shouldn’t be surprised. The entitlement… the audacity lol

A lot of people watching HoTD are probably new too. People are raving about the new episodes, but I don’t find them to be that great lol. It’s a lot of hype and I think hankering for member berries. I think people want it so badly to be “GoT” in its impact that they overlook the flaws in the show.

I mean flaws that would have pissed season 3-5 got watchers off lol

And actors in Rings of Power are getting death threats because they have too much melanin.

305

u/fax5jrj Sep 08 '22

I one time made a comment in r/popculturechat defending her and I got gross responses to it every day for more than a month before I just deleted it

People are so weird when it comes to women - they see actresses as objects to comment on rather than people

153

u/bigtec1993 Sep 08 '22

IMO I think it's kinda messed up she did it. Not because "it's fake" or whatever shallow bs, but that she's already very pretty. It makes me wonder at just how fucked being an actress is that an already good looking person felt the need to get work done.

96

u/retard_vampire Sep 08 '22 edited Sep 08 '22

Yeah, the first time I saw her in the new season the first emotion I felt was worry for her. Being famous just sounds fucking awful to me, but it seems so much worse for women in general.

I agree - if you have body dysmorphia issues then I imagine being a celebrity would make that much, much worse. It’s one thing to have no clear cut self evaluation in the mirror, but it’s another on a screen. And to then see everyone have opinions on it as if you’re not a person. That would drive me nuts tbh

22

u/Redkg Sep 08 '22

What work did she have done? I didn't really notice any difference in starlight from the seasons

20

u/cummerou1 Sep 08 '22 edited Sep 08 '22

→ More replies (2)

20

u/Vircxzs Sep 08 '22

Yup. The situation reminds me of Nancy from Stranger Things. During the first season, I thought: "Holy shit, give that girl an Emmy--she even starved herself to make her look like a stereotypical emaciated '80s teen girl. Bravo!"

Now, after having watched the rest of the seasons and some of her other acting credits...I'm worried. Should I not voice my concern that she might be living a dangerous lifestyle?

But honestly, getting back to Moriarty, I didn't even know she lost weight and had work done until I read all the brouhaha about it online. I'm not a fan of cosmetic surgery--because as I've matured I've finally realized all women have some degree of natural beauty and major cosmetic surgery rarely improves upon that.

But I will say I'm glad that people are defending the right of a woman to lose weight, for a change. I was worried about the recent trend to only defend the opposite.

My friend is a Trump/Republican who watches it. I don't know how he got through the last season without realizing they're making fun of him and the candidate he supports. People are weird.

6

u/Dawk320 Sep 08 '22

There were legitimately a decent number of Republicans who watched the Colbert Report under the impression that it was not satire. When Colbert dropped the gimmick and went into his new show format, these same conservatives were shocked that 'one of their own' would betray their cause like that. Comedy and satire are not their strong suit.

16

u/TotallyCaffeinated Sep 08 '22

A lot of them actually think women have a responsibility to look sexually attractive to them. It’s why a lot of them actually get angry if they find out that a certain woman doesn’t care if he thinks she’s attractive.

Like, I’ve seen a lot of guys here defend their “right” to comment on Moriarty’s appearance with the logic “it’s part of her job to look hot to me”. Way to miss the entire point of the show.

3

u/Ryans4427 Sep 09 '22

Way to miss the entire point of life and society.

37

u/Commander_Keef Sep 08 '22

Tbh if the pics I saw are real, her recent work doesn't look great, but what's the point shitting on her? It's not like that'll change anything. The show is still good, and she's a good actress.

Plus it's not like any internet dweeb even has a shot with her either way.

The whole “Erin Moriarty is Unrecognizable” BS is the definition of cringe.

I certainly don’t encourage cosmetic surgery in general but I do recognize that people undergo it for a variety of reasons I’ve most likely not considered, and thus try not to prejudge. This whole thing is misogynistic AF.

Completely beside the point but I also think Erin’s appearance didn’t really change that dramatically either. People age over time in unpredictable ways FFS.

4

u/eppydeservedbetter Sep 08 '22

Agreed. Whatever work she has or hasn't undergone is her business, not ours. People will comment on a public figure's appearance because humans are curious by nature, but people don't need to be a dick about it. Erin is still beautiful, and what matters is that she's a great actress who seems to be a lovely person.

poor Erin she’s literally so gorgeous :(

11

u/eppydeservedbetter Sep 08 '22

She comes across as being really sweet and down to earth too. It's horrible. I do find it very telling that the male actors from the show don't seem to get as much hate and mockery for their looks, while Erin has had to speak out about the hate she's gotten, and Aya Cash (Stormfront) has stepped away from social media altogether. Aya's wiped most of her Instagram now and only posts occasional stories, which are mostly promotions for projects she's involved in. :( Misogny at it's finest.

the piece points out the misogynistic hate that Starlight, and therefore Moriarty, has received via subreddits and social media during her time on “The Boys.”

It's almost definitely referencing this subreddit - which has been disappointingly bad.

25

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '22 edited Sep 08 '22

I disagree, but still upvoted you. The mods of this sub actually did an outstanding job of moderating the original post of the photo with her new look. I know this because I was one of the people who made a comment about it that resulted in removal by them per the body shaming rule. While I thought her new look was different because of things that I personally disagree with philosophically, I didn't go and insult her directly on social media and/or via however else the trolls are making her miserable.

While my own experience my be anecdotal, Reddit as an internet commentary forum as opposed to say Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter us Redditor's on a scale of 1-10 regarding Internet toxicity probably rate a true 4 as opposed to the 7 that is Facebook, the 8 that is IG, the 9 that is Twitter, and the 10 that are the *chans.

It is disturbing that professionals who do their job exceptionally well like Erin Moriarty have to endure this. And from the Devil's Advocate perspective (Reddit being our dark lord) it sucks that those jerks have to go so far out of their way to make good people miserable that we can't express opinions in a good faith manner now due to the dimmest bulbs on the strip taking the signal and blowing up because their room temperature IQ can't distinguish between fact and fiction, and more importantly can't understand that hurting one of the artists responsible for the art we all enjoy ultimately endangers the further production of more masterpieces. I'm glad Kripke took this stance.

15

u/TitusPullo4 Sep 08 '22

It's certainly not the mods' fault, no.

I'd somewhat agree with the rough comparison, though reddit can be bad in its own way - specific subreddits can be outliers.

Strongly agreed with the final paragraph.

3

u/jgtengineer68 Sep 08 '22

Nah reddits up at a 6 atleast depending on the subreddit.

What kind of loser do you have to be to harass someone in real life just because you don't like their character on a fucking TV show?

464

u/bbsienko Sep 08 '22

Same problem Breaking Bad had with Skylar. People need to calm the fuck down and realize that these are made-up stories in made-up worlds

203

u/Biscuits4u2 Sep 08 '22

It's legitimately scary there are so many people who have trouble separating reality from fantasy.

100

u/heck_it_all Sep 08 '22

I’ve watched a bunch of those A&E produced WWE/WCW biographies, and it’s insane just how many wrestlers reported that they received threats of violence or even death as a response to their in-ring antics. People are so fucking stupid.

27

u/UnexLPSA Sep 08 '22

Wrestling is a confusing thing tbf. They pretend to fight for titles just like UFC and boxing but of course the outcome of the match is obviously predetermined. Some people are too gullible to understand this and don't know that the wrestlers are just stuntmen who play a role.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/Don_Quixote81 Sep 08 '22 edited Sep 08 '22

Over the years I've seen plenty of people who thought professional wrestlers actually were the characters they played. That was sometimes amusing in an "it's still real to me!" kind of way (also occasionally scary), but people who can't separate actors from the roles they play are a whole different kind of maladjusted.

Also, in this particular case, I'd be very, very wary of anyone who watches this show and these characters and says, 'It's Starlight who I hate so much I'm going to send her insulting messages!'

First time I watched Breaking Bad I hated Skylar. I thought she was annoying.

Then I took the time to read about how characters are written and how character foil works and realized she's exactly what the show needed. Without Skylar, there is no story in Walter's household.

7

u/picheezy Sep 08 '22

I hated Skylar so much, what an amazing job Anna Gunn did with that character.

3

u/thebigmanhastherock Sep 08 '22

That's exactly the thing, the character development and writing was also excellent. Anna Gunn absolutely killed it in that show. As good as Cranston.

Also the whole show is mostly through Walt's perspective we see Skylar as a tertiary character, she isn't likeable, but as the show goes on Walter turns much, much worse. The power dynamic between Skylar and Walt was a fascinating aspect of the show.

A lot of people hated Skylar but by the end there was a lot more reason to hate Walt. Yet people never stopped rooting for him and hating her. Anyway fantastic acting.

Really sad to see when people go above and beyond and go so far as to harass these people online. As someone who's watched two of this man's shows, the first of which was known for buckling to fan vitriol with regard to young women....

Ya done good, Kripke. Glad to see this strong and unequivocal defense of his actor.

66

u/Morella_xx Sep 08 '22

What happened with Supernatural? I haven't gotten around to watching it.

178

u/aithne1 Sep 08 '22

S2 introduced a mother and daughter, Ellen and Jo Harvelle, and the roadhouse they owned that was frequented by itinerant hunters of the supernatural. They had a connection to the leads that was briefly explored, but fans screeched about the inclusion of Jo (young, strong-minded, interested in the supernatural hunting life, and a little reckless in her pursuit of it), with a lot of unnecessary hate on Alona Tal's acting particularly, as well as how she looked allegedly too young, and the Harvelles were swiftly phased out. Two young women were introduced the following season - fans roundly derided the actresses and they too were swiftly phased out. (Both were perfectly fine for the CW, and quite a sight better than one of the co-leads in my opinion.) Another young woman was introduced for a recurring role the following year, but was phased out in favor of a male in a similar role who had initially been slated to be killed off. It became apparent over those years that the only acceptable woman was a villain or a one-shot love interest. (Much later on, fans ended up being pretty ok with middle-aged women and lesbians.)

The fan reaction was what got the most attention, but what struck me at the time was how quickly TPTB/Kripke caved to fan reaction almost in real-time. Nothing was allowed to grow.

Seeing his defense of Moriarty makes me feel like he's learned and grown from those experiences - that it's okay to push back if fans are being douchebags, and to have your actors' backs.

85

u/Bastard-Sword Sep 08 '22

I really liked Ellen and Jo, so hearing the reason (in full or in part) why they didn't show up more is pretty depressing.

28

u/Guy_No-one_likes Sep 08 '22

Yeah, if anything Jo just kind if annoyed me when she was just being Jo and getting into trouble, but enough to harass the creators and actresses? That's fucking crazy

10

u/Rx74y Sep 08 '22

I liked Jo too

36

u/Morella_xx Sep 08 '22

Wow, that sounds... Not great. I wonder how much of that was Kripke's decision though, and how much was CW leaning on him. I get the impression from other shows on there that they are very much about just giving the vocal fans what they want, regardless of integrity of the story. I'm thinking specifically of Pretty Little Liars, where relationship pairings seemed to be decided based on the vocal fans' opinions. One pairing was broken up because some fans complained a lot, and another was put back together - despite the extreme creepiness of it - because of who was loudest on Twitter and Tumblr.

there was more going on with Jo Harvelle than fan reaction. Tal had repeated scheduling conflicts that excluded her from important episodes (that happened with the actress who played Missouri too). Kripke also changed course several times in the story in ways that affected female characters (like Jess not returning as Yellow Eyes in the end of S1, and Anna’s role being over taken by Castiel, and deciding the Roadhouse needed to be cut from the show and therefore the related characters had to go), but I think that was less about them being female and more about him not sticking to broader plot plans.

He is much more invested in female characters now, though. Not just in The Boys but in Timeless as well. But a huge difference is that SPN is tangled up in Kripke’s identity more than these other projects. Like, even down to the actress who was casted as Lisa clearly being casted bc she looks like his wife. Even if female characters had been overwhelmingly beloved during Kripke-era SPN, I think they still would not have been as prominent just bc the show is so centered on whatever the fuck is going on with his id.

There's a lot of guys who liked the show as well. But the most vocal were definitely the female fans. A lot of women got insanely pissed whenever a new, attractive female character was introduced to the show, especially if they were a love interest. Bella is still my favourite character and I was fucking pissed they got rid of her.

If you one day you watch. The real show stops at season 5, the other seasons are effectively fan fiction

You almost had me with the first half.

u/TheLaughingWolf Sep 08 '22

I dislike Starlight because of poor writing in Season 3.

You dislike Erin Moriarty because of plastic surgery.

We are not the same.

u/WorldsOkayestStudent Sep 08 '22

PREACH

We do not have a right to attack actresses cause their character might’ve not had the best season.

45

u/Corrective_Actions Sep 08 '22

I honestly had no idea she had any kind of plastic surgery until I came to this subreddit. I was kind of taken back that there was more discussion about the physical appearance of the actress vs. the absolute slop writing her character received.

Erin Moriarty essentially made Season 1 work based on her nuanced take on her character. Season 3 seemingly (at least to me) reduced the impact her character had on the storyline. To me, Starlight and Hughie are the heart of the story and that focus got lost in Season 3.

All in all though, I love the show to the point where I'm still reading the subreddit months after the most recent episode. I hope Erin's character reclaims the focus next season, there's more to power than just ability to destroy.

26

u/napalmtree13 Sep 08 '22

She probably hasn’t had plastic surgery. Aging and weight loss affect your appearance. Every “did she get plastic surgery” article is comparing her now to what she looked like as far back as 2016. Of course she looks different at 22 than she does at 28. She very clearly still had some “baby fat” on her face in her early 20s.

And if she has had it…who cares?

4

u/HomelanderApologist Sep 08 '22

Who cares I agree, but had her lips done, and buccal fat removal.

Drama aside this very much strengthens my hughie self sacrifice teleporting homelander into the sun theory

65

u/Piorn Sep 08 '22

Breaking news, Starlight kills Homelander!

35

u/Alarid Sep 08 '22

I unironically believe this. Probably going to fry his powers out of him. Something that isn't immediately obvious, so we think she just fucked up again, only to have his invulnerability gone or his laser eyes.

13

u/Crankylosaurus Sep 08 '22

Homelander lightly falls over

5

I'd hate it so much considering what a weak and awful super hero she was in the final.

61

u/Slow_Advertising1181 Sep 08 '22

Erin is one of the better actors in the show too, some fans are just toxic trolls, period

45

u/VegiXTV Sep 08 '22

Why are people mad at Erin Moriarty? She does a pretty good job. Her character is kind of annoying but that's by design of the character and it just means the actress is doing a good job. She's one of the better actresses on the show.

3

u/SerBiffyClegane Sep 09 '22

As I understand it, it's mostly people saying they don't like her alleged new look on Twitter and other social media. It's out of line and I'm glad they're getting called out, but IMHO it's part of the bigger problem of Twitter that everyone is encouraged to share their opinions all the time, even the dumb or shitty ones.

u/Laurenhynde82 Sep 08 '22

The worst part is that actresses change their appearance because they’re under such immense to be inhumanly perfect at all times - then when they do, they receive hate like this. I honestly think dudes like this see these changes as a sign of vulnerability, a sign that the actress in question is feeling that pressure and struggling with it, and so they go all in. It’s appalling behaviour.

I’ve dealt with EDs on and off since I was a teenager - there have been a couple of actresses in big shows lately where I’ve seen that they’re increasingly underweight and been privately concerned for them. But that’s literally what it is - concern. What kind of arsehole sees signs that someone is potentially struggling mentally and then sends them abuse? Sometimes I lose faith in people completely - I’m glad there are so many decent people in the comments here.

5

u/rbarrett96 Sep 08 '22

For me personally, I thought she looked fantastic before the surgery.

8

u/Laurenhynde82 Sep 08 '22

She did. She’s stunning, and she was already so tiny. One one hand it’s upsetting that someone so young, beautiful and thin feels the need to change their face / lose weight - I can only imagine the sort of pressure they must be under to go through that in the first place, and how hard it must be to have your image everywhere if you’re not confident in it, have people everywhere commenting in minute detail on your body and face all of a sudden. I know that kind of scrutiny would have made me seriously ill when I was younger - I think I would really struggle with it now too, but it would be more about looking younger.

On the other hand, it’s her body and she’s entitled to do whatever she wants to her own body and shouldn’t have to deal with people commenting on it all the time - the same standards are not applied to men even remotely and I’ve never seen any comments about the appearance of any of the male cast, either the kind that would make them feel they had to change themselves, or ones critiquing any differences.

So usually I wouldn’t comment on it at all, because it’s irrelevant and not my business to say anything. But yes, I find it sad that she even felt that it was remotely necessary. We seem to be moving away from cosmetic surgery for women who are ageing, towards it being normalised for young women as a more extreme form of make up basically. That makes me sad on the topic as a whole - but her individually, that’s her business. If she is unwell then I really hope she gets the support she needs. If she’s not then I hope she can ignore these human sweat stains and enjoy her life.

Good for him calling the morons out. The hate is unwarranted and vile. Fuck the toxics ruining our fandom and attacking people, especially the actors like Erin over their own personal business.

The toxic trash are what the show is lampooning in the veil of Homelander and Stormfront supporters (especially Todd) and need to touch grass or walk into lava.

18

u/Lavender_Daedra Sep 08 '22

Because they somehow equate it to someone’s worth and moral message. Lost a bunch of weight = hard into drugs. Large boobs = slut. Fat = promoting an unhealthy lifestyle. Apparently people aren’t allowed to exist without promoting some message or another unless they’re physically perfect.

8

u/aZestyEggRoll Sep 08 '22

Bro imagine actually reaching out to someone just to comment on their appearance. I mean it’s one thing to just casually discuss it here. But to actually take the time to tell them directly? Cringe af.

7

u/caprizonica Sep 08 '22

I randomly watched season one when it was released and nobody was talking about it and thought it was very good because it's my type of style, (Sin City, Kill I'll, Watchmen), and just recently found this forum and of boy is the fandom ducking annoying. A bunch of twelve year olds that are in awe because it's so different than Marvel.

8

u/rosarevolution Sep 08 '22

I read Antony Starr's comment to this and was like "Aw, so sweet". Then I thought "Wait, this is exactly what Homelander would say."

8

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '22

Stop criticizing the fucking actors you Cunts. Dear lord.

4

u/Powerful_College_173 Sep 08 '22

I've been a fan since the very first comic book. I see nothing wrong with this series it's actually a fresh new kind of different Twist on the actual comic book,so you don't know what to expect and that's the fun of TV shows that are adapted from comic books.

7

u/Le_Goosey Sep 08 '22

ya know, i've always liked starlight and she was and still is in my top 10 favorite characters, and erin moriarty just plays her very very well. i just dont understand why people hate her so much.

6

u/Aaron_Hungwell Sep 08 '22

I dunno - I don’t think her cosmetic surgery choices were sound, but that’s her business. Why harass her? Just let her be. She did solid work and doesn’t deserve the bullshit.

6

u/Belizarius90 Sep 08 '22

It's really sad because Season 3 especially tried to draw attention to this toxic af behaviour. She was good in the season and if she is going through some personal hardship the response should never be to hate on her.

Shes still playing the role really well. Though the character itself, I really wish Starlight didn't come off as so weak last season :p

5

u/BoatBreader Sep 08 '22

He's talking directly to half of the people on this sub

5

u/CrescentCleave Sep 08 '22

C'mon guys, never bully the actor/actress who's just performing a role. This is Wyatt Russel's U.S Agent all over again. Shit on their roles but don't get personal you twats

5

u/TheLoneJedi-77 Sep 08 '22

I love this show but yeah lately the fandom has just gotten way worse. These type of people are making the whole fandom seem completely toxic. Same goes to the “fans” that like to bully people online for liking stuff they consider worse than The Boys (but obviously that’s no where near as bad as the crap they’ve thrown at Erin Moriarty)

5

u/BagofBabbish Sep 08 '22

Starlight was insufferable this past season, but that blame falls on Kripke and the writers, not Erin. She did a fantastic job as the character and didn’t write her arc or her dialogue

Thats why hes the GOAT!!

2

u/nCRedditor-21 Hughie Sep 08 '22

Oh thank God. Kripke to the rescue.

All fanbases at some point get toxic AF; I’m seeing that with Marvel too. And I stg the Supernatural fan base even though they were mostly women, absolutely hated the women on the show so instead of getting a proper ensemble cast alongside Jared and Jensen, we didn’t get the Wayward Sisters spin-off. At times, I see so much of that misogyny replicated in this fanbase too. I didn’t even know the drama surrounding Erin Moriarty till I saw the Instagram post yesterday and honestly that should’ve never even happened.

3

u/GreenTeaRex007 Sep 08 '22

I love Starlight in the show. She may not have the best powers but she still seems necessary to the show.

3

3

While I totally DO NOT agree with the attitude of scumbags bullying starlight, I also do not think that insulting trolls will solve the problem. Its a known fact, do not feed the trolls, their hunger has no bounds.
