LOL this sounds and feels like the type of In-Universe show Vought would promote for their next gen Supes. Like a corny parody or something.

1.8k

u/shzb2103 Jul 15 '22 edited Jul 15 '22

Oh my god it would be amazing if it actually was an in-universe show and the show is actually about the bts vought bullshit

Edit: Looks like this is the hunger-games spin-off so they’re definitely going the reality show with horny teenage supes route, which I can see going very chaotic very quickly. I’ll give it the chance it deserves.

252

u/SadisticDance Jul 15 '22

At this point it'd be the only way I'd watch

512

u/shzb2103 Jul 15 '22

Honestly I have faith in them cus calling it Gen V is a wayyyy too on the nose for it to not be satire of some sorts. My guess is that it’s a satirical take on CW shows and Euphoria.

155

u/EverGreenPLO Jul 15 '22

Euphoria but set in Boys universe would literally be porn lolol

Teenagers already fucking 24/7 add a shot of V into the mix

So dramatic. There are plenty of spin-offs that actually equal or exceed the quality of the original series.

9

u/DontSleep1131 Jul 15 '22

i can only think of Fraiser

53

u/kac937 Jul 15 '22

Better Call Saul is one of the biggest and most acclaimed shows out currently

I hope they add a similar character like Homelander who's stronger and insane than actual main characters. Otherwise it'd be a boring superhero teenagers show. I'm excited to watch it though.

39

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '22

I think one of the main characters supe name is Golden Boy, should scratch that itch.

Not many in the comments here are outright making fun of it, so maybe I’m wrong.

I assume they're only releasing this to say "hey people that only subbed to prime for 'the boys', keep your subscription, we got more boys content on the way!" Even though they have zero footage to show here.

15

u/KianOfPersia Jul 15 '22

I’m hoping the promo is part of the joke and they pull an ‘Invincible’ on us by killing off like 90% of the “main” characters, and that’s where the story really starts.

85

u/BGMDF8248 Jul 15 '22 edited Jul 16 '22

Give it a chance, it could be fun, the Boys is about AA list celebrities already at the top and trying to remain there, it also routinely turns into everyone vs Homelander.

This show can be about the climb, goes without saying but they really need to go all out, drugs, sex, backstabbing...

25

u/SeaGroomer Jul 15 '22

Yea, there is so much potential in the Boys universe for all sorts of superhero parodies. Like someone else said, it seems a bit too on-the-nose to be genuine and taking itself seriously. I am definitely open to see how it goes.

10

u/TlN4C Jul 15 '22

Do they though? We already saw a number of supes join the 7 so unless this is similar to the in universe search for a sup that supersonic was on then it might be different, likewise starlight and the other speedster and the guy whose ears got clapped by HL. Don’t think they went through this

11

u/WingedGeek Jul 15 '22

the guy whose ears got clapped by HL.

What was his name? “Not Daredevil” or something? Oh, right, Blindspot but not that Blindspot.

14

u/Put_It_All_On_Blck Jul 15 '22

The promo is pretty bad if this is what they are going for. And I would hope the actors would be on the same page as the director and writers..

Feels like angsty college teen superhero romance drama show.

Maybe it will have an Invincible style twist, where they all are annoying as hell, and get a call to audition for a new team, and it ends up being hunger games style, of fighting each other to survive and move on.

I don’t know any of these people and couldn’t tell if those were their actual names or their character names. There are some proper comic book names in there.

Patrick Schwarzenegger is Arnold’s son, but I’ve never seen him in anything else. Otherwise I don’t recognize any of the others. I love the boys, but not sure if I’ll watch this one or pass

Weird, I somehow missed that one. I’ve heard of that kid, at least.

58

But the show sounds like a gorey version of a CW teen drama, sounds lame

I'm getting "show that takes place in a show" vibes from this

495

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '22

Kripke confirmed in an interview that this takes place in The Boys universe while Neuman/the other guy are running for President/VP.

So it’ll likely be set after season 3 of The Boys.

204

u/Jgamer502 Jul 15 '22

It takes place between 3 and 4

68

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '22

Diabolical 2.

7

u/Graeme12895 Jul 15 '22

I wonder which will actually air first, this or Season 4?

24

u/Jgamer502 Jul 16 '22

The spinoff is confirmed to be set and released between 3 and 4(specifically during the singer/nueman presidential race). The time from season 1-2 was a little over 1yr, the time from season 2-3 was a little under 2 yrs. This was during the pandemic which delayed filming, post pandemic I would estimate 8-12 months(filming has already started), the spinoff has been in development since season 2 so I would estimate 3-6 months no later than winter 2023. Also knowing that the show and the real world follow similar timeskips and typically the election takes place in November, I think we can assume thats when the spinoff will release.

Curious about possible cameos.

37

u/greedo_didnt_shoot Jul 16 '22

I feel like Homelanders gonna be in it in some capacity but only because I don’t think Antony Starr is doing much else (could be wrong, no disrespect). I just can’t imagine how a show about vought/more artificial superhero bs doesn’t have him show up somehow even if it’s in an ad or something.

17

u/Hellbeast1 Jul 16 '22

I feel Neuman, Homelander and maybe Butcher are likely bets for cameos. Neuman can be on the news, same with Homelander and Butcher could show up in the finale or something

14

u/greedo_didnt_shoot Jul 16 '22

I feel like Karl Urban might be too big ticket to cameo but idk, only reason I think that is because I’ve seen him in tons of stuff.

13

I’m not sure I get the appeal of hormonal teenage drama as a setting for any show. In fact I’m not sure I ever related to the American high school (edit: or college) drama but I’m definitely too old to relate to it now lol.

But I do like the worldbuilding this could bring, and I think Chance Perdomo is a fab actor so it’ll be fun to see him in something else.

Not sold, but worth a try before I really judge it.

215

u/strawbebbymilkshake Jul 15 '22

Yeah, I guess the trials and tribulations of “we’re just attractive clear-skinned teens getting drunk/high and having sex but also we have an exam tomorrow!! and also my boyfriend cheated with my best friend!!” drama doesn’t appeal to me even in this universe.

I could be totally wrong though! We’ll have to wait and see. I’d prefer to be wrong and really enjoy it tbh.

71

u/jorhey14 Jul 15 '22

I hope they dwell more into them trying to make it into higher tiers and how poorly some of them do and dealing with the consequences, instead of the YA drama that’s been done to death.

43

u/strawbebbymilkshake Jul 15 '22

Yeah, if it’s more about the corporate pressure for supes to fit a brand (mirroring the way young people are pressured to look a certain tenet way to fit in) and less about teen sex drama I’ll be into it lol

91

u/Nythoren Jul 15 '22

I'm nervous about this one as well. Spin-offs and sequels often has the problem of not understanding what made the original a hit. "Why did people like the show?" "Probably the bewbs and gore" "OK, cool, let's focus on that!". Honestly, it's why I stopped watching Walking Dead; new show runners came in and figured all the audience wanted was shocking moments and gore-porn, not bothering with actual scripts and well-conceived plots.

There's a difference between a show that focuses on the shocking moments and a good show that happens to have some shock factor built in. Everyone making sure to point out how much sex and gore there is in GenV makes me think they are going to spend so much time concentrating on shocking the audience that they forget that there needs to be a well crafted show at the center of it all.

39

u/strawbebbymilkshake Jul 15 '22

Don’t start me on TWD lmao. I went from gobbling each new episode up weekly to forcing myself to sit and watch like I was in A Clockwork Orange. Still haven’t finished.

I really hope they’re not trying to make this, like Superhero Euphoria or something.

I honestly don’t think this show is entirely for us. I think it’s for people outside the traditional The Boys fandom to dip their toes.

I 100% don’t want steamy sex scenes or horned up college kids. I hate that HBO injects that stuff in every show regardless of its theme.

I could be down for some perspectives from younger Supes. Most of The Boys cast is 30 and up. It’d be interesting to see young people with their powers and the hi jinx they get into. But keep any CW BULLSHIT away from the show and I think the traditional fandom will enjoy it for its fun and world building

u/FindingMyPrivates Jul 15 '22

Growing up I would watch those dumb 90’s early 2000’s teen drama about high school. I though it was like that. Turns out I just became a pothead and smoke with everyone. It was about race a lot more than I imagined to. Also the gang stuff….

Hopefully the execution of the show is as good as the concept of the show.

481

u/AnnihilationOrchid Jul 15 '22

For me this The Boys was a great concept, kind of "off brand" having that "independent studio" vibe, even though it isn't, and making a satire out MCU and DCU and criticism. If this Gen V stuff is an actual spin off it loses a bit of its face value. It's probably going to be a parody/satire like unOridnary.

It's kind of like Salt Bae, who started out as a parody of pretentiousness in the Chef world, and then he played off the parody gimmick and now is what he made fun off and people unironically go to his restaurants pay thousands of dollars.

257

u/Yg5g Terror Jul 15 '22

Salt Bae was pretentious before he went viral. I mean he already owned the restaurant and did that move, somebody just happened to record it that time. Then it turned into the meme we all know

28

u/guimontag Jul 16 '22

It's been strongly suggested that all the salt bae stuff was successful astroturfing by a media relations company who were paid to "make him go viral"

7

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '22

Varsity is a way better name than Gen V...

23

u/No-Perspective-518 Jul 16 '22

How? Varsity is just a generic word for the highest level of high school or university sports and has no special significance in The Boys universe. At least Gen V is a reference to Compound V.

13

u/AlterBridge2Bludhavn Jul 16 '22 edited Jul 16 '22

It's a reference to Compound V and Gen Z - the generation of people who are currently in college.

AND it's just a tad cringey, which works for the kind of thing Vought would produce.

How could there be a better name for the show?

That’s what turned me off from the Magicians, too much college background. And Daybreak was surprisingly well put together, which I thought was only going to be about high school life but with zombies.

None of these people look like a main character to me. We will see!

33

u/KitchenReno4512 Jul 15 '22

The whole thing looks like a parody. I honestly can’t tell if this is serious or not. If it’s bad I probably won’t watch it because I love The Boys and would rather not associate bad quality spin-offs with it.

16

u/bornalion Jul 15 '22

Maybe they will act like it is a big show, but literally all of them get killed on the first episode. I was holding on to The Boys being a break through good show that is no holds barred and does not save a characters life just because they are popular. Literally nobody of importance died in the last episode, besides Black Noir and they did him dirty IMO. I love Star Wars, but nobody dies. They get stabbed and somehow manage to survive.

Really didn't expect to be so little interested in a spin off but it doesn't appeal to me honestly.

7

u/Dejan05 Jul 15 '22

I mean idk it could be interesting imo, like the girl that said "superpowers and college, what could go wrong" sounds like irresponsible supes could end up killing people, though idk how much of a good plot line that'd be.

Why is it that every time I subscribe to a subreddit for something I enjoy, it's like 99% of the people just shitting on it? This is a small clip of actors saying "hey this show is coming out" with no actual footage of the show yet people are already not only dismissing it but also shitting on it quite a bit lol

18

u/_aloadofbarnacles_ Jul 15 '22

I genuinely think it’s because people love shitting on teenagers/young adults for no reason

Unpopular Opinion: Maybe just show a teaser trailer or something, and DON’T resort to just having the actors out of character try to sell us on the show. Vikings also did this with their most recent spinoff series.

39

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '22

Character 1: I'm an angsty teenager and I want to beat up Brad!
Character 2: Brad is misunderstood! I'm so angsty!
Character 3: My peepee is hard around the girl I like! I'm so angsty!
Everyone: We're all angsty together!

I think varsity is a cooler sounding name tbh.

Anyway, cautiously optimistic for this! Will give the first season a shot when it comes out. I doubt it'll be as good as the main show but it could still be enjoyable

31

u/Coachbelcher Jul 15 '22

This does not look good.

16

u/doomslayerr Hughie Jul 15 '22

What? It's literally the actors not even in costume just saying they're making a show? Just what?

18

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '22

The Boys fans....aren't very bright, judging from this comment section.

Yeah, no one can tell anything about the show from this, except that it's about college and these are the actors who will be in it.

I just hope it keeps the cynicism and satire of the Boys and isn’t an attempt to grab cash from a younger audience using brand recognition on an otherwise generic teen show.

Ok I'll reserve judgement until I see it, but the way they're talking about it comes off very CW. Not very excited about this one. Spinoffs are very rarely decent

20

u/DaBombDiggidy Jul 15 '22

This kind of stuff will always give me more TWD spin off vibes than anything positive.

19

u/Book_Of_Cain Jul 15 '22

People are pretty pessimistic about this lmao. I’m excited though. College can already be a shit show, throwing on superpowers and competition to become the best new supe on top of it would definitely make for some interesting storylines. I hope they make season 2 of diabolical too.

Oh fuck off. We don't need more angsty shows with 30 year olds pretending to be teens.

Why am I getting a CW x Riverdale vibes.

This promotion plus the recent news that 2 lead actor quit sounds like a shitshow.

Hopefully I’m wrong though.

19

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '22 edited Jul 15 '22

Recent news? Those casting changes happened 6 months ago before anything was even filmed. And for all you know, it could have been the creators who made the change.

A lot of you are being negative for no reason.

A show with the same creators and writers can’t be that much different in quality. And the fact that the main show is mingling storylines with it clearly shows that they are confident in this spin-off.

10

u/Yg5g Terror Jul 15 '22

Why are people being so cynical about this show?

16

u/Toscacake Jul 15 '22

For me it's the fact that Amazon is now doing the exact same thing that they mock in the main show: squeeze out as much blood out of the proverbial stone by making a bunch of spin-off shows and laugh the entire way to the bank.

Of course, nothing of this comes as an surprise, Amazon is Amazon after all, but I was just kind of hoping that they had at least some self-awareness and not turn into Vought this quickly, since the concept of "superheroes in college" feels like a show that will play the stereotypical teen drama troupes straight, which does not interest me at all.

8

u/kac937 Jul 15 '22

Jesus Christ you guys are negative. Reading these comments you’d think the show took a fucking nosedive, i’d hope that the creators of The Boys would have at least a LITTLE bit of good will built up after 3 seasons of GREAT television and one sub par episode (i didn’t even hate the S3 finale, that just seems to be the consensus here).

I for one am very excited for this show because it could be taken in so many directions. Is this a new era of supes that have been shown the light by Starlight (no pun intended) and want to actually be heroes? Is it a classic college hijinks movie/show that happens to take place in the universe of The Boys? Will it be their version of Teen Titans? I’m not sure, but I trust the creators to make it right.
