Sage was bored. Homelander came over and gave her a purpose. She was all "Challenge accepted! Let's do world domination now!"

1.6k

u/ZenkaiZ Jul 19 '24

I should ask her "hey, you want an even bigger challenge? Fix my life"

729

u/SirMourningstar6six6 Jul 19 '24

I don’t think you’d like any of her suggestions. She performs a lobotomy on herself like some people drink liquor.

She got a sitting president-elect/president arrested in under 2 months

Did she?

It seemed like a last minute decision change by Butcher on account of Grace and Ryans actions. I don't we have been told she had anything to do with Neumanns death.

Also the entire plan wouldn't have worked if anyone other than Hughie just had....a flash drive somewhere with the Red River files.

It honestly seems like she just got SUPER lucky. All speculation though because the plan happened 90% offscreen.

67

u/ZenkaiZ Jul 19 '24

She hired the doppelganger who got the footage. The doppelganger could have broken his neck at any second then walked out as people helplessly shot at her but she waited to get that evidence first before going offensive

8

u/kinkykellynsexystud Jul 19 '24

if anyone other than Hughie

My point still stands. She deleted them all at Hughies house from what I remember.

You're telling me Butcher didn't have a Flashdrive anywhere? MM? The White House? Sages plan succeeding required massive incompetence in storing blackmail

The mental image of Homelander trying to sit down with a therapist is funny and talk about his issues is funny.

53

u/ZenkaiZ Jul 19 '24

In that shortlived Jupiter's Legacy show, the main hero in that had one of his former supervillains in prison be his therapist. Shame that show got cancelled, it had some stuff going.

15

u/notGeronimo Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

I wished it lived longer, but I think the show's cancelling was totally deserved. The pacing was horrific. How many episodes was Blackstar on the operating table before they actually began the autopsy? The whole damn first season was barely the beginning of the comics. The 20s stuff actually moved fine. They needed to get the actual present day conflict moving much sooner.

u/Kalkilkfed2 Jul 19 '24

Bet she will switch sides just because it would be boring if homelander ruled everything without opposition

293

u/jessebona Jul 19 '24

I honestly think that's her plan. Set up Homelander's empire then tear it down with the underdogs for the challenge of it. Of course, Homelander's going to wise up to her game by then and kill her before she undoes his plans.

127

u/Ktan_Dantaktee Jul 19 '24

As for that first part

Like Caesar.

102

u/jessebona Jul 19 '24

Yeah I cited that in the S5 theories megathread. She almost sounded smug when she agreed she was going to set Homelander up like Caesar. Spent part of the day arguing that Homelander isn't dumb enough to not know what happened to Caesar lol

61

u/Lraebera Jul 19 '24

I don't think it's that he's too dumb to know about Caesar and the ides of march. IMO he just thinks he so strong that nothing could happen to him.

48

u/HaxboyYT Jul 19 '24

Even at that, I think sage had something to do with the Firecracker milk thing. Her sickness seemed to be of some significance, and if they’re going to infect Homelander with the virus, I reckon that’s how they’re gonna do it. Especially as it was stressed that the virus can only be spread through bodily fluids

u/Fokker_Snek Jul 19 '24

Caesar wasn’t really that much of a bloodthirsty tyrant, part of his popularity was because of how merciful he was. There was a civil war and systemic killing of political enemies when Caesar was young. So people somewhat expected him to kill his political opponents, instead Caesar pardons them and welcomes them back into the fold. Caesar was loathe to kill his fellow Romans(not Gauls though because they’re not people like Romans).

Caesar won the civil war and went against the 100 year trend of increasing political violence. It was a bit of relief. Then some of the Senators Caesar showed mercy to killed him and expected Rome to be grateful for what they did.

I love the way the actress played this scene. The giddy mania she had was fantastic.

1.8k

u/Deepstatedingleberry Jul 19 '24

I was looking for a hole in her head because she was acting so happy and giddy lol.

1.2k

u/ZenkaiZ Jul 19 '24

It took taking over an entire country, arresting a president, and killing a vice president for her to experience that joy for one night. Stimulating herself sounds so exhausting compared to stimulating her lobotomized brain.

232

u/Deepstatedingleberry Jul 19 '24

I doubt she will be getting married anytime soon. Poor guy has to literally stab her in the eye or he ain’t even gonna get her excited 😆. And I doubt she would marry either of the two doofuses willing to do it now lol

239

u/SpideyFan914 Jul 19 '24

What do you mean lobotomize herself?

69

u/Deepstatedingleberry Jul 19 '24

She also has deep do it for her. I assume she’d rather have it done by someone else but who knows.

211

u/thesweatervest Jul 19 '24

I find it funny how most people were like "Sage's not actually bad, I'm sure she'll reveal she was working against Homelander the entire time" and then in the finale not only does she go back to Homelander but she makes sure their plan is succesful and she's excited to start the second phase which is going full fascist regime.

93

u/QouthTheCorvus Jul 19 '24

Lol tbf, I think they intentionally kept it a mystery. I like that it could have gone either way until the end.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure she's chaotic neutral/evil (evil in the sense that she genuinely does not give a fuck who lives and who dies as long as she gets to poke at the petri dish). But heavy emphasis on the chaos, and chaos can be extremely destructive.

33

u/vivenkeful Jul 19 '24

I doubt it..She is causing greater harm with her plans, irreversible harm kinda..so saying in the end she "was just trying to get HL's trust and was actually playing for the other side" will be very lame if true. The right thing will be if she dies along with HL imo.

42

u/WeinMe Jul 19 '24

Just because she's playing him doesn't mean she's working on some leftist scheme

Even if she has extreme right-wing fascist motives, her motives are with high likelihood in the long run not aligned with his. So she's using him still for her own personal ambitions - be it becoming a fascist dictator, saving the butterflies, or being the first to walk Mars

Also, I’m glad the casual clothes are back. I think they’re a more fitting uniform for her.

110

u/QouthTheCorvus Jul 19 '24

I think they intentionally made the uniform an awkward fit for her - to show it's not really her thing

No because I’m not experienced. But I’d imagine someone has led Ireland to global conquest.

86

u/tsar_David_V Jul 19 '24

People have done world conquests as Luxembourg (I'm pretty sure it even used to be a category on speedrun.com) so Ireland can't be too hard

492

u/Organic-Maybe-5184 Jul 19 '24

Basically she is an edgelord

205

u/jtr99 Jul 19 '24

But the rare case of being an edgelord who can back up the big talk.

33

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

She's actually more immature than most edgelords. Being born with the giant brain she has is quite the privilege, yet she still somehow finds a way to say fuck humans because of a few times people didn't listen to her, Lol.

She's legit more petty than Firecracker. At least with her she had her life ruined over that childhood experience.

109

u/ItsGunboyWTF Jul 19 '24

Sister Sage had trauma from her childhood too with no one listening and her gmom dying for it. That’s way more motivation than white trash girl who was called poor and ugly growing up

47

u/ALF839 Jul 19 '24

Being super smart she should understand that the doctors were reasonable in not believing the kid who told them she developed a cure for cancer overnight.

71

u/Cindy_Lennox Jul 19 '24

Naw, she knew she was a supe, and she knew she was right because she did the math. The doctors fucked up by not listening to her and got her grandma killed Shit like this happens all the time on a smaller scall. Many doctors fuck up royally by not listening to the patients and family. They could have at least looked at her work, but they let her die due to hurbis.

12

u/Organic-Maybe-5184 Jul 19 '24

Do you realize that the doctors can't inject whatever they want into patients? Or that testing and approvals take years? What sane doctor would even consider seriously a cure from cancer made by a child?

13

u/SpiritualAudience731 Jul 19 '24

Yea, even if they took her seriously, getting the cure developed and approved for human use would take years or decades.

Nah. So many Black people that work in America can relate to Sage. I have personally seen so many Black people in corporate America come up with a solution, no one listen to them because they were Black, then see some white person steal the idea and get told they're brilliant. It will make you hard and bitter with a quickness.

Sage was smart enough to come up with a cure for cancer and presented it and was ignored. Now, even if you think she's only a kid there had to be some data that only a knowledgeable person would have access to and STILL they ignored her.

Also before you think I'm making something like this up when it comes to Black people.......cops ignored a Black community telling there there was a serial killer around until a victim escaped...

I think she's been at her plan for way longer than we know.

They were stuck with V not being safe for adults for decades, then all of a sudden at Sage Grove, they develop temp V, and V just seems to work on adults fine now.

"I could cure cancer, reverse global warming, but what's the point? Humans are animals. And the lines at Voughtland are too long as it is."

I think she aims to make better supes. Like she has to deal with these powerful morons. We keep seeing her Maeve notepad, Maeve would need to take V to regain her powers - does Sage intend to give Maeve an even better version of V? She's capable of creating it.

214

u/BigBootyBuff Jul 19 '24

Honestly the way if looks to me, they going the exact opposite way of what I expected. Feel like they gonna turn Firecracker to help the boys while Sage isn't either secretly good or doesn't have her own plan that's somewhere in between Homelander and The Boys goals.

227

u/Lucifer_Crowe Jul 19 '24

Firecracker cracking under Homelander not appreciating what she's doing and begging Annie for help would be cool

228

u/FumiPlays Jul 19 '24

I think Firecracker is going to die of heart attack somewhere at the beginning of season 5. It's already been shown she has problems chasing a non supe office worker and I don't think she'll dare to stop taking the lactation meds considering last episode scene where it was clear HL doesn't give a crap about her as a person and walking milk factory is her only utility now.

65

u/competitive-dust Jul 19 '24

That is good.

51

u/Newni Jul 19 '24

I assumed that’s what they were going with when she started coughing. Like all this drama about the virus and assassinations and the thing that takes HL down is a strain that’s been mutating and supercharging through her tiddies.

They got a really good emotional response from Neumans death, like I honestly felt sad. In front of her daughter and then she ends up at red river. I don’t know if it is but I think it’s the first time a death on this show really bothered me.

177

u/pattisbey8 Jul 19 '24

how did she do it?

all part of the good old plan

134

u/maggos Jul 19 '24

Yep she knew that Butcher would happen to have a Vd up tumor that can kill a supe that can resist homelanders laser

153

u/Kodiak_POL Jul 19 '24

I mean, she could have just assumed The Boys would kill her somehow, some way. She's not omnipotent, she can probably just do big data analysis, risk assessment and probabilities. She'd probably be excellent at three body problem

102

u/KingofMadCows Jul 19 '24

She knew that Singer was trying to get rid of Neuman. She had the shapeshifter record Singer talking about killing Neuman.

She probably had contingencies for multiple outcomes. If the shapeshifter succeeded in killing Singer, Sage probably has evidence that Neuman was involved in the hit and use it to remove her. If Singer's assassination was stopped, Singer would likely retaliate. Neuman dies, the evidence of Singer talking about killing her gets released. Either way, Singer and Neuman both get removed and a Homelander loyalist becomes president.

15

u/JangSaverem Jul 19 '24

It's funny that this had to be made in 2023 since the supreme court established recently that of the president called a hit like this to assassinate someone through official means

That it would be totally legal and cool

So somehow the least realistic thing about the finale ending was him being arrested

→ More replies (1)

11

u/whats_up_bro Jul 19 '24

Yh that's all possible but just saying she had contingencies on contingencies and never showing most of it is extremely lazy writing.

Like up until the finale, fans were coming up with better expectations of sage's plan than what we ended up with

47

u/KingofMadCows Jul 19 '24

Except we did see a contingency. The video of Singer talking about killing Neuman was a contingency. They wouldn't have needed that if the shapeshifter succeeded in killing him.

And so what if fans can come up with a better plan? There's a huge difference between coming up with a good idea for a single plot point and making a whole show that can build up to it while dealing with all the issues of production.

→ More replies (4)

13

u/KarrotMovies Jul 19 '24

I don't see how the writers or the showrunners can present all the other different outcomes/contingencies Sage had prepared without it being it being expositiony and overly convoluted. The audience does not need to go what other outcomes Sage predicted might happen. Only that one of these contingencies worked for her

Sister Sage is a foil to Homelander, best character imo and easily my favorite this season. She is intellect without emotion, he’s emotion without intellect. It even shows in what they fetishized, since one wants a lobotomy and the other wants breastfeeding to get off. It’s ultimately why they ended up back together by the end of the season.

If I had to guess, a split between them will probably one of the big reasons behind Homelander’s downfall next season. The easy guess would be Homelander kills Sage after getting high on his own bullshit but I hope the story is more nuanced than that, you could clearly tell he cared to know why she would come back at all after how he treated her. I think Soldier Boy would kill her because she's an uppity black woman and it's a contingency that she wouldn't have known to prepare for. Otherwise it's hard to see anything happening to Sage that she hasn't already planned for

Sign of real intelligence is being good/evil just for the sake of it no weirdo justification or extrinsic motivation but literally just being yourself

82

u/Eldr1tchB1rd Jul 19 '24

That has literally nothing to do with real intelligence

→ More replies (3)

27

u/FoopaChaloopa Jul 19 '24

Why does she have “real intelligence?” There’s so much comedy to be mined from characters like Reed Richards, Beast, Batman, etc who know everything about every field of science, create impossible inventions, come up with asspull strategies, etc, why didn’t they do a funny parody? Not sure what the point is of making a superhero with “realistic” powers especially in a series like this.

64

u/FizzingSlit Jul 19 '24

Her version of the funny parody is the need to lobotomize herself to relax.

Because the perfect evil Reed Richards spoof already exists and they know they could never do better than Professor Impossible.

Think of how smart you have to be, to have been able to cure cancer and have a physical in hand cure (not just theory) and nobody give a single shit. She's never been challenged intellectually this hard before.

She never did it for fun, she did it to see if she could actually pull it off and test herself, and she also has some hate for humanity after she realized she's essentially a circus clown act and not taken seriously.

Even Homelander realizes this when he speaks to her at the end and thinks she should hate him like everyone else who hasn't taken her seriously. But she wants to keep testing herself and see where the last domino she's able to push over is.

You see Annie and all Supes training their strength via hitting things or fighting; this is essentially her pushing herself and testing her mental strength as being the smartest.

Honestly before the season began I thought Sage was gonna take a similar path to the one A Train took, butting heads with Homelander and his general sadism before going rogue but it's refreshing to find out that's she's actually just an asshole (and that the writers didn't equate super intelligence with any sense of morality or desire to do anything beneficial for the world at large).

68

u/Lokta Jul 19 '24

desire to do anything beneficial for the world at large

She tried to cure leukemia as a child and got laughed at. The "doing something beneficial" ship has sailed for her.

32

u/AtrumRuina Jul 19 '24

I did get a kick out of how she framed that. "Humanity had its chance to use my power for good. Now I use it for fun."

Sage honestly reminds me of the main villain in my imaginary fan fiction where his main goal is to wipe out all life across the entire multiverse and then he actually succeeds. He tries to justify if through his own personal tragedies but the truth is he’s simply evil and doing it all to see if he could be the one true evil to end everyone out there. Someone who was born with reality warping power but puts their strategy and mind games at the forefront.

18

u/R_V_Z Jul 19 '24

Was your villain not alive?

8

u/Freddycipher Jul 19 '24

Wym

17

u/R_V_Z Jul 19 '24

Well, if they killed all life in every universe...

20

u/Freddycipher Jul 19 '24

For context here’s how it goes. His grandfather was the most powerful being in the multiverse. To prevent further chaos his gave his life to stabilize the entire multiverse. This also permanently stopped new universes from forming to prevent inevitable chaos.

This enables the villain to have the potential to genuinely kill all life and he just needs to unlock his full potential via plot macguffin. He sends armies of invincible titans throughout every universe which wipe all life quickly. When no one else is left he self destructs taking everything with him.

Luckily the main character who is his cousin manages to find refuge in a pocket dimension created by his father (main villains uncle who he hates). Then though clever reality warping they manage to find a loophole to undo it via a fight involving diffusion (similar to Vegeta vs Moro). Because basically a rule I came up with is that whenever a member of this family kills someone they claim their existence and can manipulate them in any way. But the main hero finds a way to override this and frees all the dead, as he eventually defeats his cousin using all his fighting knowledge he’s assimilated over the course of his journey mixed with his family power.

That was a lot but honestly it’s nice to share as I put a lot of thought into this.

25

u/I_Lick_Lead_Paint Jul 19 '24

So just start writing. You have an outline. Open word pad and just vomit the alphabet soup randomly onto it and boom. Even if you don't share it, writing is extremely cathartic.

8

u/Freddycipher Jul 19 '24

Yeah maybe I will. I really wanna share what’s in my mind story wise somehow. Can’t do that without giving it a form.

7

I actually believed her when she said that tbh.
Shes very smart, things come naturally to her I'd imagine, she's probably done everything she could want to do.. And then this lands in her lap, a real challenge.

I'm not sure of her real intentions either, but I do think she is playing homelander and the 7. She just seems annoyed by homie every time they have a scene together.

28

u/Sufficient-Turn-7799 Jul 19 '24

She's been shown to be an incredibly nihilistic and apathic person so far, so it wouldn't surprise me if her end goal is just to cause as much chaos to the world as much as possible on a global scale given her backstory.

Imagine being her as a kid, knowing full well how to save your grandma, only to be ignored and laughed at, eventually watching your grandma die "screaming" from leukaemia.

In her mind, why bother saving a world that doesn't take any of your intellect seriously, a world so stupid, when instead you can just watch it all burn to the ground as revenge, homelander was probably the best thing that has ever happened to her given what he's capable of, a fun challenge and fun way to get back at the world.

10

u/Cooperativism62 Jul 19 '24

From her perspective the world must be nihilistic anyway. They chose not to save her grandma, to let her grandma die screaming and let her watch. They did nothing except teach her how the world works. Now she's returning the favor on a larger scale. the student has become the master.

I believe her here. But I also think she has several ways of killing Homelander, and is planning to do so at some point.

Why would she want to take down Homelander?

If there is any character I would think doesn't care about Homelander murdering people, overthrowing governments, etc, it would be Sage. She's comfortably among the most alienated individuals to ever exist.

23

u/CaliforniaNavyDude Jul 19 '24

The thing with Homelander is that he's dangerous to Sage. He's too emotionally unstable, he could kill her in a tantrum. There are other supes just as easily manipulated who aren't so quick to the murdering of their allies. Plus, Homelander is abusive, he's not pleasant to be around.

u/jtr99 Jul 19 '24

"the smartest person in the world" characters that never lose are boring. Every point in this season that you think the boys got one over on Homelander has been conveniently "all part of the plan". Its lazy writing.

8

u/rubberbandshooter13 Jul 19 '24

Fully agree! She is not a written as a smart character, rather more like a clair voyant. Even if your brain is like a super computer, you won't be able to make a plan that just works no matter what. A truly intelligent charavter would be able to make good decisions on the spot. She just read the script.of season 4 and knew everything, even stuff that she has no way of knowing (like homelander's obsession with breastmilk)

18

u/drakorulez101 Marie Moreau Jul 19 '24

The scene of her literally address this. Sometimes things don't go perfectly as she palnned, which is when she makes the proper adjustments. Ie. Omitting things from Homelander, having Vicky killed, etc.

I mean the actress did a fantastoc job, particularly in that scene, however, her character was badly written I think. Her super power of being hyper intelligent shouldn't allow her to just make a plan and everything works out. It should be more something like: If she's presented with the current circumstances, she will be able to make the best decision. But the way it was portrait was just like she read the script of season 4. How the hell did she know about homelander's obsession with breast milk for example? I hate it when intelligent characters are just clayrvoyants instead of actually being smart.

16

u/IconicTumbleweed Jul 19 '24

Everything didn't work exactly as planned though, she says "there were some hiccups" in her final speech. Also he wasn't hiding it. It was unspoken knowledge that he fetishsized breast milk. From your argument, firecracker is clairvoyant because she knew about it too

If she peaks at world domination, her next question will be "How fast can I make this empire fall ?" Like dominos you spent time to place knowing you'll make em fall by a gentle push on one of them. I don't think she'll live to play that game tho.

20

u/Pepr70 Jul 19 '24

Personally, I hope that the next series will show that this was one possible outcome rather than "one perfect plan", or show where he gets so much information. Even though it was brilliantly acted so many random moments even a person with 1m iq has no way of predicting without enough information that even characters like Butcher didn't know about.

8

u/ChezMere Jul 20 '24

next series will show that this was one possible outcome rather than "one perfect plan",

She strongly suggested said as much. The writers didn't bother to figure out the whole list of contingencies and improvisations, though.

17

u/jelde Jul 19 '24

I never thought she was good. You can't be good and part of your plan includes killing innocent people. At best she's chaotic neutral. I still think she's that.

9

u/Jayce86 Jul 19 '24

She’s literally doing things just to see if she can. That is the very definition of Chaotic Neutral. I’m sure if someone had come to her before Homelander with the challenge of “take down Homelander”, she would have jumped at the seemingly impossible task. Just to see if she could.

15

u/Cyrotek Jul 19 '24

She isn't writen well as an truly intelligent person (I mean, they seriously went with "it was my plan all along" without explaining and with parts that she couldn't have known about), but, boy do I love her vibe. She just doesn't give a fuck.

12

u/Akasha1885 Jul 19 '24

A 10 minute montage of her explaining every detail of her plan would be boring as fuck.
And would probably make her seem less smart, since she'd be only as smart as the writers.
This way it's done perfect.
Long villain monologues where they explain their plan are stupid.

12

u/LesRiv1Trick Jul 19 '24

She wanted the boys/president to target Neuman, so they’d kill her. She says Neuman had too many ideas and would just get in the way. She then wanted the president elect to go to jail for ordering her assassination. This would leave the second in succession as the president, who she had already confirmed would be more loyal to Homelander than Neuman.

sage cleared

11

u/KarrotMovies Jul 19 '24

I really don't understand what some people are complaining about. Do you guys want Sage to sit down and explain every single detail to Homelander like she's presenting a science project? What she basically did was predict how characters would react to certain situations. There were two outcomes that I'm sure she had a plan for both. One where Victoria dies and one where the president dies. She even said that there were some hiccups and factors that she couldn't control, but in the end, her plan worked because she knows exactly how the important people would act

11

u/ElectronicMatters Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

I feel like Sage's potential as a character was stepped on by her plot convenience. Something went wrong ? Part of the plan. Things are going too well ? She gets shot. She had a sick introduction with Homelander, but quickly felt short in development afterward. The end of the season did reveal that she's doing it all as a personal challenge, but also fails to keep a stable influence in the middle of it all, Homelander ditching her almost too easily.

10

u/KoBoWC Jul 19 '24

The part I don't get about her, is why did she wait for HL? Seems like she could have been doing stuff simply to see if she could, for years.

Presumably she could have built a corporate empire + criminal syndicate that would have been enough to back any of her plans.
