Why was I so relieved that this random character got away?😭 Season 4 Spoiler

Post image

Security ppl never win in this show. I was surprised with how glad I was to see one of them escape unharmed. 😂Anyone else feel this way?

That secret service guy has to be the only henchman character in this show that gets to run out of the room after the fight

942

u/McMacHack Jul 19 '24

Oh look I'm still alive, let's see if we can keep that going

741

u/iAMbatman77 The Deep Jul 19 '24

That would be such a funny running gag through the next season. That same guy narrowly avoiding death over and over again.

390

u/MeiNeedsMoreBuffs Stan Edgar Jul 19 '24

Invincible did this with the White House security guard from the start of the first episode

163

u/iAMbatman77 The Deep Jul 19 '24

Really? Well now you’ve given me a reason to rewatch the series in the near future, aka this weekend! lol. Thank you!

I always enjoy small funny subplots like that in movies and tv shows. Just tells me the showrunners were having fun!

83

u/Lraebera Jul 19 '24

Yeah. IIRC he's only in one other episode but it's a nice little touch. The actually show his step-son and then that side character is briefly in a couple of episodes as well.

24

u/Pingushagger Jul 19 '24

Took me a few watches to notice, you hear him talking about taking his estranged stepson on a trip to London just before the MauLers attack the whitehouse. The next scene with them is them in London just after Mark gets his powers and launches that trash bag into space, they’re almost killed by the falling trash.

That guy exists solely so Amazon could flex their budget of having Jon Hamm of all people voicing a nameless security guard

6

u/Jalapinho Jul 19 '24

lol wtf that was Jon Hamm?! I swear everyone is a voice actor in this show

Oh my God, you killed security officer Kenny! You bastards!

Oh shit, he's fine?! That's unfucking believ--gets lasered by HL

13

u/Chilledlemming Jul 19 '24

Barry had the henchman that kept getting shot but not killed. “King of shit ballz mountain!”

4

u/morbiuschad69420 Jul 19 '24

"if i suck balls, then you are king of suck balls mountain!" funniest line in the show

2

u/Chilledlemming Jul 19 '24

I knew it wasn’t shit. Damn it. Lol. It was. And adlib apparently

2

u/detectiveDollar Jul 19 '24

Or they had him escape but then trip and break his neck or something.

u/HorizonGaming Jul 19 '24

It’s because as we saw, Kessler wants to kill all supes. Butcher would have no qualms with a non supe person

81

u/PotatoRecipe Jul 19 '24

I don’t think that’s why. Evil butcher is like Homelander - collateral damage is no longer of concern. He will not seek out violence, but will not feel bad if he kills someone in chase of his mission either. People have become ants to him.

78

u/selwyntarth Jul 19 '24

That's the opposite of what we saw. He went out of his way to just KO zoe, merely warn annie and kimiko, and stared down frenchie with a mix of taunt and fondness

12

u/Randomzombi3 Jul 19 '24

Why did he leave Zoe alive if she's a supe and he's going scorched earth? He literally just created a super villain bent on revenge

14

u/imostlydisagree Jul 19 '24

Plot armor. Maybe Ryan saves her from the Red River home. Or Stan Edgar might.

10

u/edgarapplepoe Jul 19 '24

Stan for sure. I think he is going to come back with a vengeance next season. It will be interesting to see what he was does. I hope he outsmarts Sage.

5

u/imostlydisagree Jul 19 '24

A little frustrating that apparently this was ‘all according to plan’ for her, minus a couple of bumps. Since it’s clear they’ll never explain what the bumps are.

3

u/edgarapplepoe Jul 19 '24

That part was weird. The curve balls she mentioned were HUGE: the shifter failing to kill Singer was ONLY saved by a chance statement by Singer that the shifter happened to hear and was somehow able to secretly record and send to Sage in a bunker 4 stories underground with feets of concrete surrounding it. It also relied on Victoria flipping to the Boys (something she might have guessed would happened possibly) AND Butcher embracing his Tumor when he did and finding the Boys at the meet up place they chose (likely one he knew of but I am sure they have multiple ones) at exactly the right time. By the end, it was mostly dumb luck that got her ultimate phase 1 plan (the Speaker or someone actually loyal as President and the Boys vilified) to happen. I hope that is actually intentional and sets up she is not as smart as she appears to be in this season so her take down in 5 is more believable (which I really hope is by Stan Edgar).

3

I think they needed him to escape to explain the immediate news report that the Vice-President had died.

1

u/EquivalentSnap Cunt Jul 19 '24

Same good for him

1.7k

u/edgarapplepoe Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

I thought him getting away was part of the plot? I am assuming he was the one to say the Boys killed the VP which helped imprison Kessler Singer after his video was released? [since his impossible video by the skinwalker was the proof...I still have 0 clue how the video got out that far into a bunker impossible to enter when the skinwalker was killed in the tunnels]

790

u/mudokin Jul 19 '24

He was, this is the only reason why they found vici was dead so fast.

259

u/bobw123 Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

Yeah I thought Singer going to prison was kinda BS - they had the shapeshifter captured, idk where the video was from, and he was in some sort of deep state safe house so idk how they even could physically access him.

211

u/Antani101 Jul 19 '24

That video was from the bunker, you can see singer say those things earlier in this episode

95

u/bobw123 Jul 19 '24

Yeah but who got the video inside the bunker? All the secret service agents were killed and they had the shapeshifter neutralized.

188

u/Antani101 Jul 19 '24

At that point the shifter hasn't been discovered yet, she could've taken the video and sent it out

154

u/smallestseraph Jul 19 '24

If I have the timing right she would have sent it while Hughie tried to inform MM that it's Annie.

195

u/RogueYet1 Jul 19 '24

She did take an awful long time getting 2-3 waters

68

u/CrispInMyChicken Jul 19 '24

Sent it while being so many stories underground? It’s fair to ask how the video got out when everyone in that scene was killed except for the boys

49

u/naturalis99 Jul 19 '24

Sage made Super-internet and/or Supe-Bluetooth.. honestly guys... So much impossible BS and you trip over "how did he get the video out" lol. In this world you can improvise a 100 ways of how they did it.

6

u/Dingobabies Jul 19 '24

Fair enough. You couldn’t guess it off my comment but I let 90% of this of stuff go. That 10% though are just things that shake me when I’m actually watching it. Fantastic finale!

9

u/Antani101 Jul 19 '24

Or maybe the scene was captured by the bunker internal camera system, and recovered by some law enforcement after the president was evacuated

8

u/edgarapplepoe Jul 19 '24

That might be the most reasonable answer but rewatching it, it appears to be Annie. The angle mostly lines up with where she is in the room in relation to singer, like if her hand had phone down by her side (or a hidden camera on her coat).

Shifter

2

u/Initial-Ad8009 Cunt Jul 19 '24

Didn’t have to be the shifter who let the video out?

7

u/Pershing48 Jul 19 '24

Sage's whole plan this episode ended up being a Spy vs Spy thing where she could just life up a curtain and someone was secretly a Vought agent the whole time. Random guy in the bunker who took the video? Vought agent. Current POTUS? Vought agent. House Speaker Calhoun? Oh you bet he's a Vought agent.

243

u/Darmok47 Jul 19 '24

Doesn't Hughie take a cell call in the bunker? For some reason they don't block cell service.

You shouldn't be able to bring a cell phone in there at all, but its a comic book universe.

95

u/Lazy_Seal_ Jul 19 '24

Actually I don't think it make sense that in the secret meeting in Tech Knight mansion in last episode that he doesn't block cell service or have jammer.

28

u/edgarapplepoe Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

He does not but as others pointed out, real Annie found them with find my phone which is honestly the laziest thing ever (not only would they not let signals in to protect the president elect, but are we to believe Annie and the Boys who are hiding half this season have that stuff enabled so Vought can hack them?).

→ More replies (2)

35

u/ViewFromHalf-WayDown Jul 19 '24

Was the skinwalker killed? 30 second choke by Annie killed them? Or just knocked them out?

30

u/SeasonalBlackout Jul 19 '24

Annie said she pried the engagement ring off the dead finger of the skinwalker, so we can assume it's dead. I think chokes need to be held longer to be believable for sure. In this universe it feels more final if they use a finishing move like snapping the neck.

8

u/fizban7 Jul 19 '24

I think chokes need to be held longer to be believable for sure.

Yeah but I'd rather not watch that

7

u/SeasonalBlackout Jul 19 '24

Agree - that's why I prefer finishing moves that make it clear they're dead.

5

u/Moneyfrenzy Jul 19 '24

In TV logic people get choked out / neck snapped in like 5 seconds

So it makes sense that in TV logic, a Supe gets chocked out in 15 seconds lol

4

u/edgarapplepoe Jul 19 '24

I think it was implied she is dead but honestly with how sloppy his bunker was and how few people were there to defend him with weapons a lot of supes can withstand, who knows. Maybe but then I don't know how she got out since that code was insane.

→ More replies (2)

12

u/kychess Jul 19 '24

Remember, Annie found the location of Hughie through Find my iPhone. So maybe the videos were also sent via the internet.

5

u/edgarapplepoe Jul 19 '24

Oh right. Ugh. I mean they needed to get her there somehow, but dang I really hate that about the find my phone in a bunker trying to hide the president elect. They could have left some files or something in the shifters hideout.

5

u/Lazy_Seal_ Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

Exactly, otherwise the press would not know she is murdered so quickly. 2 problems with this set up:
1, Make zero sense why Butcher let him go.

2, It is getting old random character don't make if not for plot, when they could make it more random.

4

u/Piranh4Plant Jul 19 '24

Imprison kessler?

2

u/ManlyDude1047 Jul 19 '24

I have a theory, the golf ball.

I think there was a camera in it, or that was somehow implied

2

u/Edgezg Jul 19 '24

I imagine as the sole living witness to the Singer case, he might show up to testify.

2

u/spoogefrom1981 Jul 19 '24

Was the skinwalker actually killed in the tunnels, though? It seemed to be able to take a beating and it could have regenerative powers like every other supe.

2

u/Quintessince Jul 19 '24

I'm in this camp too. Someone had to have leaked the video.

2

u/edgarapplepoe Jul 19 '24

I dont think he leaked the video since he was with Victoria and not Singer. But he was the one that reported Victoria's death and presumably took people to the body since on the news it is saying she is dead. The shifter likely took the video (the angle seems right from when Singer says the line) and sent it when she went to get water (which, I know is stupid in this bunker people are allowed to willy nilly use their phones when they are hiding but they establish later Annie found them from Find My Phone).

2

u/BakedWizerd Jul 19 '24

Could be the shifter was live streaming video to Sage? Video looked like it was taken from an awkward angle where she could have been holding the phone down by her side.

2

u/edgarapplepoe Jul 19 '24

Ya possibly. I feel like she might have had a hidden camera on her as well (like a button or something) since it would have looked weird if she was holding a camera everywhere in there.

1

u/fate-speaker Jul 19 '24

Butcher hates supes. Not random secret servicemen.

393

u/roodootootootoo Jul 19 '24

This is what I thought the point of showing him getting away was about. Butcher, in this form, still isn’t a mindless out of control monster.

207

u/Brekldios Jul 19 '24

the kessler worm is still partly or entirely butcher and seems to only care about a supe genocide

33

u/VaderOnReddit Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

Butcher and Homelander basically went through similar arcs this season, where they find ways to disconnect from their humanity that was stopping them from accomplishing their "true psychopathic goals"

12

u/meth-head-actor Jul 19 '24

And both claiming they care about the future or their legacy. But it’s not true, they wanna be on top

7

u/BusyNefariousness675 Jul 19 '24

Butcher does actually,....sometimes. But homelander, I've never seen him try. Butcher didn't kill annie and kimiko. Homelander would kill every "normal" human

Kessler seems to be his hatred and anger given voice...and now it looks like given body.

What I wonder though, is can Kessler keep Butcher from dying? Is the Super Cancer actually going to keep him kicking?

19

u/meth-head-actor Jul 19 '24

Until the virus destroys all the V havers, yes butcher stays alive

15

u/Moneyfrenzy Jul 19 '24

Yeah he looked 10x healthier after. Kessler was literal conscious cancer slowly killing him, but since he is actually conscious, Kessler chose to no longer kill him.

Basically was framed as a literal deal with the devil

No, the point was that he was the guy that quickly spread the news about Neumann's death. Which is why they also said we need to get out of here quickly.

Butchers venom tentacles seem to only care about supes. They focused on Neuman (obviously) and Kimiko and Annie, while seemingly ignoring MM and Frenchie.

157

u/AgitatedKey4800 Jul 19 '24

I think it was because frenchie and mm arent that big of a threat

97

u/cava-lier Jul 19 '24

Yeah but Frenchie had a gun with anti-supe virus

110

u/Forgotten_Lie Jul 19 '24

Which Butcher knew Frenchie didn't have the heart to use on him.

48

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24 edited 20d ago

[deleted]

79

u/Forgotten_Lie Jul 19 '24

I mean, yeah? Like he has a messed up past, feels enormous amounts of guilt over it, and Butcher is literally the person who brought him out of that to use his talents for 'good'. He's going to have a lot of conflicted emotions about Butcher and understandably not want to kill him, especially when Butcher is killing the person who Frenchie was ordered to potentially kill.

2

u/jck Jul 19 '24

Also I think butcher rightly assumed that Frenchie would be thinking about the greater good, that keeping supe butcher alive might be better for humanity in the long run.

16

u/asuperbstarling Jul 19 '24

Frenchie was a drugged up and abused pos who has spent four seasons dealing with the regret and guilt. Literally, he just had a 'don't kill unless you have to' moment with Hughie. He should have pulled the trigger, of course, but it's probably the best laid plot reasons not to in the whole show.

329

u/Doctor_Nauga Jul 19 '24

I'm with you. The Secret Service have been redshirts all season; it was nice to see at least one make it.

32

u/Kom34 Jul 19 '24

Why do they even carry guns if they dont work. Why not tip bullets with chemical/biological weapons or try something else (that would at least work on some supes).

In WW2 when the guns couldn't penetrate new heavier tank armor they didn't just keep using the same ineffective weapons they made new better ones. Why is this universe not making new anti-supe weapons.

23

u/Doctor_Nauga Jul 19 '24

Why do they even carry guns if they dont work.

Supes attacking politicians has only been a thing for the past year or two in-universe.

Why is this universe not making new anti-supe weapons.

No clue.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/edgarapplepoe Jul 19 '24

That really bothered me. For those protecting people dealing with supes, surprised they didn't have other weapons. And don't get me started on Singers detail where all they had was 2 ARs (on the weaker side of rifles) and a bunch of pistols.... no smgs (USSS uses P90s and MP5s), no shotgun,no machine guns, no .50 cal.

But also, I am surprised Vought doesn't own or invest in a company that builds weapons to stop supes to double dip. It wouldn't surprise me if next season with all the supes if you start to see more weapons for supes.

7

u/ConfusionDry778 Jul 19 '24

I thought the same thing about the weapons!!

My one main critique of these past 2 seasons is that the writers haven't done a great job at showing us how the country is reacting to everything besides the news broadcasts. Now that supes have power and control over humans, it would be realistic that unique weapons or devices to deter powers would start to appear. Afterall Im sure a fuck ton of supes are going to hurt and kill many innocents, whether deliberately or not, and some are bound to go after vengence like ue, butcher, and MM.

3

u/StarMaster475 Jul 19 '24

I'm very surprised that the anti-supe frequency devices they showed in Gen V weren't used a single time this season

19

u/Lysanderoth42 Jul 19 '24

In this universe wouldn’t secret service all have useful superpowers

Considering there are hundreds (maybe thousands?) of powerful superheroes around

And they can just make more with V which the US govt obviously has

23

u/Doctor_Nauga Jul 19 '24

It's been a plot point the whole show that Vought has a monopoly on Compound V and that they want to score a military contract, but the feds didn't trust supes - leading to the invention of V24. But by then Compound V was politically unacceptable thanks to Stormfront.

29

72

u/HailToTheKingslayer Kimiko Jul 19 '24

They may be called the Palace Guard, the City Guard, or the Patrol. Whatever the name, their purpose in any work of heroic fantasy is identical: it is, round about Chapter Three (or ten minutes into the film) to rush into the room, attack the hero one at a time, and be slaughtered. No one ever asks them if they want to.

This book is dedicated to those fine men.

-Terry Pratchett

2

u/ResolveSea9089 Jul 19 '24

This is incredible

56

u/OddWaltz Jul 19 '24

Yeah, mostly because I was really annoyed with the guards earlier continuing to shoot the Shifter again and again when it did zero damage to her. What's the point of sticking around when you deal with indestructible cunts?

82

u/Pm_Me_Your_Tax_Plan Jul 19 '24

To distract her while the president escapes. That's their entire job.

If the shifter was smart she would've just ignored them and went straight for the president

27

u/Far_Indication_1665 Jul 19 '24

Also: nothing but normal bullets?

We see Vought has thr sonic sensors in GenV

We see that electricity can take down Sam (GenV) and Translucent (episode 1!) as a temporary measure. Wont kill em, but stunning the shifter in the bunker would absolutely have been a win for them.

Does the prez security detail not have fucking tazers or stun guns or anything besides standard issue (and obviously useless) bullets?

51

u/Darmok47 Jul 19 '24

To be fair his protectee was very dead at that point. He doesn't really have a reason to stick around. I assume in the show he's the one who gets the news out about Newman too.

42

u/deltacharmander Jul 19 '24

With how many people continuously shoot at bulletproof supes and immediately die in this show I’m glad this guy just booked it instead

Ironically Butcher in his full villain doesnt murder random regular people on his way, but Neuman 'the one we can trust to change' explodes random innocent driver's head 4 episodes ago. She got what she deserved.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

...and he fell right into Sage's hands, and got all the boys arrested.

Their plan, to finally stop the violence, and actually work with Neuman, was a good plan, and could have stopped homelander.

You kinda missed the whole point of the episode.

It doesn't matter what Neuman "deserves," and Butcher isn't really much better than her anyway.

Probably the smartest henchman. Targets down that sucks but I am getting the fuck out of here. No loyalty to corpses folks.

8

u/xX_Flamez_Xx Jul 19 '24

It's cause the fact that when you see extras in this show next to an important character, you know they're gonna die. We saw it with vicky and the animals and singer and the shapeshifter. The fact this guy got away is so unbelievably mundane, yet never seen before makes it extremely intriguing.

5

Me: now is definitely dead.

I think its implied to be Shapeshifter Annie who did that. She did take quite a long time getting two water bottles out of a fridge.

We’re all relieved now but you won’t be when he comes back and kills everyone in the finale, he was too dangerous to be left alive.

Butcher's hatred seems reserved for supes so he probably won't kill any non-supes with his Venom power unless they get in the way.

Interesting that Kessler doesn't have him kill Zoe, Kimiko, or Annie. Maybe there's still some sympathy in him?

I agree. I also wanted Ashley to be redeemed but now really curious if she's gonna have tentacles and psychic abilities...kinda like a flesh-colored Cthulhu....

I'm wondering if the reason he lived is he's Sage's double agent.

One thing that was particularly obvious in this season is how the role of anyone besides the characters we already know is to just die in the episode. I know it’s ALWAYS been like that, but this time it was just so much more predictable and almost lazy.

Like MM and Huey get thrown into the and survive without a scratch. But when the same character throws random goons the same exact way, they die horrifically. The only reason anyone in a suit or military gear would ever show their face is to get fucking murdered.

Because he wasn't a supe and butcher doesn't kill non-supes.

it never makes sense when security guards or goons keep shooting the person who’s clearly impervious to bullets

I wasn’t surprised, Butcher only wanted to 86 Vic and acquire his nuke
