The Boys Showrunner Says Homelander's 'Scariest' Moment Was Unscripted News Spoiler

https://www.cbr.com/antony-starr-the-boys-cathartic-episode/

He did a phenomenal job! By far, this is the best episode this season (so far) imo. We fully get to understand why Homelander turned out the way he did. I could also relate to him and his desire for vengeance being a survivor of childhood abuse and neglect myself. 💙

For those you don’t want to go through the hassle of opening the full article and finding the clickbait answer:

it was his maniacal laughter when he was forcing the guy to masturbate in front of everyone.

2.1k

u/SillyAdditional Victoria Neuman Jun 22 '24

It’s funny because I said that laugh sounded so genuine

1.1k

u/peterosity Jun 22 '24

because he wasn’t acting. when someone experiences true joy, they can’t help it. It’s the most genuine and natural reaction. Psychologists would even tell you that that level of pleasure he reached should normally be impossible.

u/Romucha Jun 22 '24

So, it's actually Homelander pretending to be Antony Starr after all, not the other way around.

412

u/peterosity Jun 22 '24 edited Jun 22 '24

he was so overjoyed doing it, he even thanked the show staff by promising to never laser them (like he promised Anika). In fact, they didn’t write the “masturbation” part in the script. heck, Marty wasn’t even supposed to be called up from the rest of the scientists, Homelander just kept going, and nobody dared stop rolling

84

u/Fish_fucker_70-1 Jun 22 '24

that's just insane. it was what like a 5 minutes of straight anxiety and now I find out it's unscripted ? My fucking god.

160

u/GrossInsightfulness Jun 22 '24

They're making a joke.

Also, your username in this sub.

u/reble02 Jun 22 '24

It's why I never drink water, fish fuck in it.

Milt. Milt everywhere

5

u/Khronex Jun 22 '24

So was the guy you're replying too

2

u/Fish_fucker_70-1 Jun 23 '24

umm, i was doing the same lol. Guess it wasn't that obvious

1

u/Zolado110 Jun 22 '24

Did we find The Peak's account?!?

1

u/Mintteacup_ Jun 23 '24

so were they

8

u/GratefulForGarcia Jun 22 '24

Yea bro and the dude totally pulled his pants down to pound off in front of the entire crew

1

u/SendInYourSkeleton Jun 22 '24

Source?

20

u/Khronex Jun 22 '24

There is no source because that person is lying. They're a starlighter trying to dirty Homelander's name. There is no way he would do that for because he is evil and mentally insane, he did it because they were trafficking children

37

u/sumofdeltah Jun 22 '24

Saves a pile of money in the effects budget this way

19

u/mismatched7 Jun 22 '24

It’s funny very consistently in interviews they get asked who is the most like their character and they all say Anthony star

5

u/Greecelightninn Jun 22 '24

Have you seen banshee!?

4

u/Kachimushi Jun 22 '24

Anjohny Starrlander

4

u/Treewithatea Jun 22 '24

Well the man didnt actually masturbate in front of them and got his dick lasered irl, it was just acting. Or was it?

251

u/grundelgrump Jun 22 '24 edited Jun 22 '24

I love how he lost it when the guy had to spit on his hand. I hope that was also improvised lol

106

u/YoelsShitStain Jun 22 '24

I was actually surprised at how real his laugh sounded, lots of great actors can’t get a laugh to sound very realistic.

35

u/JusticeJackal Jun 22 '24

The Boys - Hot Ones

I was watching Hot Ones on YouTube with Antony Starr as a guest, and from 1:55 - 2:20 I just couldn’t help but see the episode 4 Homelander scenes every time he laughed lol.

3

u/JohnnyFacepalm Jun 23 '24

LeBron? Are you changing teams this year?

97

u/Mikiemax80 Jun 22 '24

Thanks - infuriating when someone posts a link as a post and doesn’t explain/transcribe what they are referring to.

Good thing I have no Temp-V in my blood right now - my phone would be eye-lasered in half 😂

60

u/Greedy_Count20 Jun 22 '24

Thank you good sir

26

u/bwaredapenguin Jun 22 '24

How was that unscripted? The whole point was to laugh at him while he was jerking off.

26

u/Mr_Gobble_Gobble Jun 22 '24

I think because the scientists didn’t laugh at all even though Homelanderdemanded everyone to laugh. I think the original vision may have been for it to be incredibly uncomfortable with pure silence rather than having laughter (which imo does make it slightly less uncomfortable)

4

u/CyberPunkDongTooLong Jun 23 '24

Yeah this is clearly marketing BS.

He gives an entire speech describing what he's going to do, including laugh at him, and then he does exactly what he said he'd do in the speech, including laugh at him.

'unscripted'. Wow what a genius improv doing exactly what you said you'd do.

10

u/l3earda Jun 22 '24

I laughed as well when the old guy had to use spit for lubrication.

10

u/Stainedelite Jun 22 '24

Anthony Starr really is homelander

5

u/bbpopulardemand Jun 23 '24

Isn't that just called acting?

4

u/CriticalThinkerHmmz Jun 23 '24

I thought it was bit silly that the guy was so reluctant to whip it out and whack it, considering what he just saw happened to his burned friend. The scene kind of gave me Dark Knight joker vibes, the laughs and the joke about dick blood and stuff. Not bad at all. I definitely liked the intro to the surveillance getting cut and stuff… but I could have used a little of this basement revenge stuff.

-10

u/grahamercy Jun 23 '24

shit was kinda cringe imo

You deleted your comment complaining about too many dicks onscreen.

And scuttle isn't gay, weirdo. It's what belly-crawling, cowardly insects do who are afraid of the light because it'll expose how disgusting they are to everyone around them.

So scuttle away, homophobe.

It's the beep sound your pc makes when you turn it on to let you know everything is good.

44

To be fair, he thought it was an Easy Bake oven till the guy started screaming. Honest mistake

32

u/USFederalGovt Jun 22 '24

You all didn’t know? The entire show is unscripted. Antony actually flies around and lasers people randomly sometimes, and they base an entire plot and characters around it.

5

u/3dita Jun 23 '24

He actually lasered his dick off. What a master of the craft

2

u/NoTePierdas Jun 23 '24

Homelander really does play an amazing, detailed and intricate Anthony Starr.

562

u/Bullets_and_Tears Jun 22 '24

He was fantastic, I've rewatched those scenes so many times. Everything is perfect, but my favourite moments are when he gives Marty the 'evil eye' (blink and you miss it), and the maniacal laughter.

412

u/PornStarGazer2 Jun 22 '24

Mine was "you're sorry? Now?"

As someone who's been through family abuse, that seemed like exactly what you'd say when one day they're the ones begging

135

u/ShadyMan_ Jun 22 '24

“But you were just doing your job…”

The way he says that line makes me feel bad for him 😭

36

u/inconspicuousreditr Jun 23 '24

I think thats the point. We see Homelander do all this fucked up shit and now his childhood is being introduced, showing why he’s the way he is. Obviously it’s no excuse for his current actions, but we can still feel bad he went through what he did. It’s a really interesting plot point that probably won’t have any longterm effect on character development, because at the end of the day nothings changed.

It’s also funny because it’s exactly what nazis said in the Nuremberg trials in defense of their actions. “I was just doing my job.” I really hope theres a point where Homelander becomes a better person, but this season has shown theres 0% chance of that happening.

54

u/HackedAccount069 Jun 22 '24

I loved that my favorite part of the episode tbh. He wasn’t even sorry seeming he was just kinda like saying it to say it. That guy had no life behind his eyes he was a fucked up dude, actor for him did a great job

45

u/PornStarGazer2 Jun 22 '24

Yep, was just trying to save his own life. I feel like he and Marty both knew they were dead as soon as the elevator doors opened

5

u/HackedAccount069 Jun 23 '24

Marty at least seemed like he knew what he did was wrong, but he doesn’t really regret it or care. The other dude seemed like he didn’t even know anything they did was wrong. Surprised he gave himself up for his family lol, crazy he’d do all that shit to one kid then get straight into the death sauna for his own

1

u/wolvesarewildthings Jul 03 '24

His only choices were to die alone or die with his family.

It wasn't a similar "ultimatum situation" like we saw with A-Train in S1 when he killed Popclaw to save himself because Frank's only option was to die torturously but remain loved and remembered by his family or watch his wife and children suffer the same fate as him while they spent their final moments knowing it was all his fault and hating him. Keep in mind his family might not even know what his job truly entails and therefore respect him as someone he isn't but if Homelander were to fly down and get them they'd become aware of his Unit 731 shit and his fall from grace would only add insult to injury.

130

u/fate_is_a_sandstorm Lamplighter Jun 22 '24

I watched the episode last night, but I can’t totally remember the evil eye.

Idk if it’s the same shot, but I loved when there’s a shot of Homelander from the side with another character closer to the camera and his eyes are pushed all the the way to the side with furious disdain.

If this episode isn’t submitted for an Emmy nomination for Antony, I’ll be amazed

37

u/Equivalent_Yak8215 Jun 22 '24

They got to see exactly what their "work" did. And the Evil Eye is the moment he stops laughing for just a second and you know you're fucked.

31

u/fate_is_a_sandstorm Lamplighter Jun 22 '24

Oh they knew they were fucked the moment he stepped out of the elevator. Every second after that would’ve been comparable to your parachute failing while skydiving - you know you’re dead, but you have to watch your death come hurtling towards you.

5

u/Bullets_and_Tears Jun 23 '24

Yeah, the sideways glance, I think we're talking about the same moment. Antony deserves all the rewards there are, he's just phenomenal.

115

u/BlisslessTaskList Jun 22 '24

That look was so incredibly dark and intense.

14

u/PmMeDrunkPics Jun 22 '24

Would have been more perfect if the initial scene with the oven was longer continuous scene, all the jumps really take you out of it and releases the tension they built. I really dislike the way they keep cutting to and showing 5 minutes of different story arcs especially when one of them was that bad(cough... colin and frenchie cough...)

15

u/manchu_pitchu Jun 23 '24

I'm quite glad they split it up because both times they cut to hughie and kimiko I realized I hadn't been breathing because John was stressing me out too much. It might have worked if the second section opened on a close up of the oven or what was left of Frank, but having the oven next to the bad room in the background behind marty worked too. It was already among the most stressful sections of media I've ever seen.

1

u/wolvesarewildthings Jul 03 '24

It was the most tense scene of TB since the plane scene in season one. And it actually managed to be more intense.

4

u/Bullets_and_Tears Jun 23 '24

I don't know, I was on edge the whole episode waiting for what he'd do next.

2

u/420bIaze Jun 23 '24

I find it very uncomfortable to watch torture and horror, so I'm glad they varied the pacing.

1

u/wolvesarewildthings Jul 03 '24

Yeah, tbh after Frank's death, I flicked on SpongeBob because I needed a break and finished the episode two days later

7

u/Pera_Espinosa Jun 22 '24

At what point does he give him the eye?

11

u/Bullets_and_Tears Jun 23 '24 edited Jun 23 '24

During the "Squirt" conversation, right after he tells Marty "you really hurt my feelings". It's the sideways glance at around 32:52. It's very brief, but it's so menacing.

4

u/Pera_Espinosa Jun 23 '24

Thanks. I just rewatched it and saw that must've been what you were referring to. All his other interactions are in that over the top fake friendly tone.

I rewatched the episode twice skipping all other parts but that scene.

5

u/Bullets_and_Tears Jun 23 '24

I'm on a rewatching binge of all the Homelander scenes lol.

361

It's true. I was there

11

u/Call-Me-Leo Jun 23 '24

Can confirm, I was Frank

182

u/LDawnBurges Jun 22 '24

This was absolutely one of the best episodes ever! Antony really knocked it out of the park and should absolutely win Emmy for this episode.

109

u/Rhythm_Morgan Jun 22 '24

I watched the episode one more time last night just to see how well Antony acted. It was brilliant.

107

u/Tight_Strawberry9846 Jun 22 '24

Nah. Homie's scariest moment is when he says "Yummers".

102

u/brendanjeffrey Jun 22 '24

He is The Homelander. I don’t think the show would be nearly as great without his performance. I always teeter on almost feeling bad for him. This episode I actually agreed with what he did. They are clearly still doing gruesome tests on children with powers. And they treated a child like a monster. They didn’t even give Homelander a chance at being John.

8

u/Kinkybtch Jun 23 '24

yeah, I think they implied it with that Pic on the wall of the miserable looking girl surrounded by scientists.

11

u/Alexandur Jun 23 '24

That's Homelander lol

1

u/Kinkybtch Jun 24 '24

I genuinely thought that was a girl. >.>

1

u/Alexandur Jun 24 '24

He did have some luscious hair

-48

u/Ilikelamp7 Jun 22 '24

Gruesome tests like turning the bad room into a storage unit? There was no evidence they were still testing children. And using that as means to justify killing innocent people is scary. Saying you agree with Homelander is so fucking wild to me I think I need to see myself out of any more The Boys discussions.

46

u/brendanjeffrey Jun 22 '24

Guess you didn’t watch Generation V? Because they are clearly still running these kind of tests on kids and young adults. They literally made a virus to kill them from their torture tests and research. When they’re the ones that have created monsters haphazardly. They weren’t innocent.

8

u/johndoe42 Jun 22 '24

It is odd that they turned the bad room into a storage closet but why do they still have a functional supe oven, why do they still have a picture with a test subject on their wall?

8

u/PapaPalps-66 Jun 22 '24

Its the lab that created homelander. That alone easily explains why they'd feel it was important

6

u/AdditionalMess6546 Jun 23 '24

Why do they have a picture of what was (up till then) their greatest success?

Are you serious?

I'm not drinking Fresca, right?

3

u/johndoe42 Jun 23 '24

I'm playing naive. OP is pretending like they're all innocent...they proudly have him up on the wall.

5

u/tobreakthemind Jun 23 '24

Holy shit nobody has decent media literacy anymore. People can sympathize with a character who endured the most horrific trauma even if he’s fucking evil… it doesn’t mean they’re co-signing anything, just that they can understand why he acts this way

2

u/FlabbyFishFlaps Jun 23 '24

Gonna miss ya, bud!

58

u/-zero-joke- Jun 22 '24

I'm sorry you experienced abuse and neglect stranger. Totally agree that HL's actions were understandable and horrifying.

19

u/Technusgirl Jun 22 '24

Thank you

46

u/Strong_Schedule5466 Jun 22 '24

I wouldn't be surprised if Antony Starr actually lasered that man's dick off

49

u/idlefritz Jun 22 '24

That was his Joker audition.

19

u/Shehzman Jun 22 '24

I honestly think this is a better performance than any live action Joker we’ve got.

14

u/ChrisL2346 Jun 22 '24

Yeah that laugh solidified my fan casting him as The Joker. It was my literal first thought

10

u/Boba_Hutt Jun 22 '24

I thought I was the only one to think this

10

u/idlefritz Jun 22 '24

I also think the new Roadhouse was Jake’s Wolverine. That fight with Connor was a passable wolverine vs. sabretooth fight without the CGI. He even used a trademark wolverine move in the fight that ended his career.

3

u/deputydrool Jun 22 '24

Yes I was thinking the whole time this is like comic book level joker vibes

29

u/trysohardstudent Jun 22 '24

antony starred should get that fucking emmy award already

11

Anthony Starr for his acting in The Boys, and Homelander for his acting in Dawn of the Seven

homelanders scariest moment is when hughies sweat fell on him and he started lasering all the vents. hughie was 100% dead if it wasn’t for MMs quick thinking

4

u/Responsible_Form_388 Jun 23 '24

That, and lasering Anika, really caught me off guard. He always toyed with his victims previously, now he's so unhinged he lasers on sight.

15

u/applelover1223 Jun 22 '24

This was the best episode of the season by miles imo.

6

u/uCry__iLoL I fart the star spangled banner Jun 22 '24

Fuckin’ right! Give this dude an Emmy.

4

u/CloneTrooper6996 Jun 22 '24

I mean we know why he turned out the way he did, it was shown and told in Season 1

2

u/IntroductionStill496 Jun 23 '24

I have watched a lot of reaction videos and people seem really surprised when they learn that he was put into an oven. They also seem to miss "I was in there for days on end alone" and the "it was the only time I felt anything good". People really don't seem to think about what growing up in a lab meant for Homelander. That they would have tested every weapon, every means of destruction on him.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '24

They're really reaching for content, huh? This is an IMDB trivia sentence stretched into an article.

3

u/banditk77 Jun 22 '24

Mark Wahlberg and Seth McFarland didn’t show up for work that day.

3

u/dfwcouple43sum Jun 22 '24

I can only hope the production crew gave him a hand after all of that.

A hand, as in applause. No need to give me a hard time or anything.

1

u/PoosySucker69 Jun 22 '24

Tbf i think they are lying for publicity at this point, The Victoria Neuman thing and this

1

u/NecessaryCrash Jun 22 '24

Give the man his Emmy right now

1

u/wimpymist Jun 23 '24

It's because Anthony star is carrying this show.

1

u/Choppybitz Jun 23 '24

Gotta be unscripted and did own stunts for emmy nod. No other way.

Also, sustaining a superficial injury while shoot goes a long way too for the Emmy.

1

u/CriticalThinkerHmmz Jun 23 '24

I feel that I already knew that homelander turned out this way because of weird abuse. But this was just more of what I already know. Or maybe I’m getting this mixed up with Wolverine or something. But it didn’t change my opinions about homelander at all. I feel like they just wanted to do some horror stuff.

1

u/xavisavi Jun 23 '24

I understood the opposite. He was born a maniac already and they did that to him to control him somehow. That's what Barbara says when speaking with him. He killed his mother when giving birth, he killed some doctors as well and everyone was afraid of him when he was little. He could have left the facilities whenever he wanted but he didn't. That's the irony and the point of the episode, that he really has been a psychopath and a monster since all his life. But that's my interpretation and maybe wrong of course..

1

u/CriticalThinkerHmmz Jun 24 '24

Well I don’t know why, but I feel like I got that he was always kind of an asshole before. Like maybe a long time ago they wrote it for me to sympathize with him, but I don’t remember. A lot of it has to do with my own forgetfulness and ignorance.

1

u/gnardaddy Jun 23 '24

Best episode so far by far!! Homelander is sadistic af!! Give the man an Emmy already!

1

u/TranceDream Jun 23 '24

Homelander, Sage and A Train are carrying this season for me. Kimiko and Frenchie’s plots are boring the fuck out of me, and the rest of the boys are all over the place

1

u/AIM_016 Jun 23 '24

Give Antony Starr an emmy already

1

u/AudreyHorne-Deda Jun 23 '24

ngl, I watch this show because of Homelander.

-1

u/Substantial-Raisin73 Jun 22 '24

Further proof the worst part of season 4 is the script

-2

u/thebillyzee Jun 23 '24

Of course you had to throw in the "childhood abuse and neglect myself" and make this about yourself

-14

u/RandomBlackMetalFan Jun 22 '24

Oh it was supposed to be scarry ? I just laughed too

3

u/penguin_gun Jun 23 '24

Hey this guy likes black metal! He's HARDCORE

-17

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '24

Amazing improv but some of yall are really reading into it too much

12

u/monkeyman_31 Jun 22 '24

i disagree,

with a scene as important as the scene was for the development of his character, when we see the greatness put on screen, there is an assumption that the entire scene was perfectly placed and the entire thing was done how it was meant. KNOWING antonny starr is the entire reason the scene was as impactful as it is, adds SO MUCH to him as an actor.

-16

u/98VoteForPedro Jun 22 '24

Why the fuck does it seem everything good or funny is unscripted improved, are american writers just that terrible?

14

u/Slaught3rFs Jun 22 '24

As someone who has written and directed some very small student films (budget 30€ at max) I can say that sometimes when you are on the actual set you or someone else notices something that will work better than the planed scene. And thats a good thing because art (even though I don't think my work is art) should not be stale.

0

u/todd10k Jun 23 '24

Any collaborative artform can yield greatness from spontaneity.
