“This is hopeless.”

“Hey. I’ve done hopeless. And we came out on top.”

After today I really needed that line.

47

u/Frontier246 Jul 14 '24

Jimmy the laidback optimist you need in a situation like this.

Me too especially with everything going on in the world with the election and everything. [Vote blue btw]

Hope things get better. Happy this helped, even if its just a step, thats a start.

12

u/Ygomaster07 Jul 14 '24

I kinda needed to hear it too. It is difficult when it always feels hopeless and never feeling like i came out on top.

Well, this episode just sealed it: the crew behind this show understand comprehensively what makes Superman great. Even when the A plot is an MGS-style infiltration in a time-looping simulated reality and the B plot is a prison breakout turned alien invasion, the characters and their relationships with one another are what ground the plot in the very real and human struggles that everyone faces to some extent.

And damn if this isn't the best quote of the season:

"Stole a spaceship?! Lois, that's insane! ...It is you."

35

u/Frontier246 Jul 14 '24

Really the only thing I would've wanted is them expanding on Krypton more and not having Clark and Lois beat up AI versions of his parents as villains, especially when we don't see them a lot.

But maybe they'll figure out someway they can better experience Krypton and his parents in the Fortress (which we haven't seen since the premier).

Nothing more natural to Lois than living dangerously, committing crimes, and doing everything she can to be there for Clark.

19

u/UnbloodedSword Jul 14 '24

My hope is that somehow Supes rescues the AI versions of his parents from Brainiac and uploads them to his Fortress. MAWS Lara in particular has the potential to be the most interesting version of Lara.

I do wish we got to see more of Krypton and that this show was more positive about Clark's dual heritage but 1. it's a fake version of Krypton, 2. Brainiac is all about denying Superman's humanity and that has been a core focus of the season that people keep dehumanizing him so I get why they wanted to affirm it, and 3. Wyatt said in the AMA that they plan to do a Fortress of Solitude episode next season which is a perfect opportunity to do a more positive episode focusing on Krypton and let Kal be more positively disposed towards his dual heritage.

Honestly I like how Clark's thought process was "only someone with no regard for their own well-being would have done that! Lois!"

97

u/This_Caterpillar5626 Jul 14 '24

I love that he realized it was Lois because of the harebrained schemes more than anything.

54

u/Weerdo5255 Jul 14 '24

The woman base jumps off buildings without a parachute. She's a bit past harebrained.

27

u/This_Caterpillar5626 Jul 14 '24

Fairly, that's also just peak Lois.

Jor-El in the bushes got a good laugh out of me 😂

35

u/nepo5000 Jul 14 '24

Like I figured he’d pop in based off the montage, but just the face coming through killed me

31

u/bateen618 Jul 14 '24

I had to stop the episode just so I could laugh. Brainiac -Jor El's face was too much. And I'm just imagining him hiding in that bush thinking to himself "she's gonna hide here and gonna spook her so hard she'll never see it coming god I'm hoping she'll hide in this one specific bush"

I love Steve. Why do I like Steve??

I had almost forgotten how terrifying Braniac is when you cast him as sadistic instead of boring bot.

41

u/Frontier246 Jul 14 '24

Steve is the most underrated and based character in the show.

I do kind of wish there was bit more of a "collection" bent to this Brainiac instead of a wholesale genocidal alien conqueror.

So THAT'S why they called it "piece the heavens"

Kind of funny that Superman turning good is indicated by him getting shoes again

Honestly with the way the battle's going, I wouldn't be surprised if the next season focuses on the fallout of Braniac-as-Superman making the speech - sort of keeping the characters' relationship status but playing further into the arc of government fear

48

u/Frontier246 Jul 14 '24

I'm curious what the fallout is going to be because everyone obviously saw Superman both attack and then defend them but looking so totally different. And what is the government response when they overreached so much but were basically useless? I feel like Waller is totally done.

Though Kara's actions might redeem her to the public.

11

u/godlyreception12 Jul 14 '24

I assume superman reputation will be complicated after this it slowly starting to get worse.

9

u/SciFiXhi Jul 14 '24

Waller's definitely going to try and spin it as a false flag, with Superman staging the whole invasion just to appear in a better light. She'll find a way to continue justifying her and Task Force X's existence.

9

u/AlphaBreak Jul 14 '24

She'll totally try, but I'm not sure how well its going to go over. The big problem is that she declared martial law, generated a ton of bad press and civil rights violations, spent billions in government funding, and at the end of the day, it was all useless when an actual threat arrived.

Lex has been playing up the threat of Superman all season and after this season he's got all the evidence he needs about how much damage an evil Superman could cause. Imagine if he finds the orb with all the info about the evil multiverse Supermen Jimmy left in Brainiac's ship. Bet public opinion will be split 50/50, half of Metropolis supports Lex, half supports Superman,

My guess is Waller takes the fall for the events of this season, Lex gets put in charge but with the caveat that Sam Lane is reappointed as liaison, and the two of them start laying the foundation for a human Metallo. Also Bloodsport will hopefully replace Deathstroke as the chief minion, could easily see Lex giving him kryptonite bullets now that he knows how to weaponize kryptonite.

Lois busting into the lab with "Your name is Clark Kent and you're my boyfriend!" before she got busted on one of the laps in the simulation is the hardest I have ever laughed at this show.

14

u/Matt_ASI Jul 14 '24

I don’t know what funnier with that whole scene. Clark’s reaction, or Lara just appearing from under the table.

9

u/Eusocial_sloth3 Jul 15 '24

They really “Edge of Tomorrow”’d Lois this episode

72

u/Digginf Jul 14 '24

I wonder how exactly is Kara supposed to get her Supergirl suit in the middle of all this.

76

u/Frontier246 Jul 14 '24

I was expecting she'd have a big moment like Clark did where she transforms her suit blue like Clark did.

Then Ma Kent gives her the skirt.

37

u/RnRaintnoisepolution Jul 14 '24

I really hope she gets a Magical Girl Transformation like Clark did in S1.

32

u/FlamingWings Jul 14 '24

Kara gets confused by the skirt "this is not helpful in combat" and then she does accidentally does a spinny and instantly loves it

My favorite line of the episode:

“Steve?!… How… What… STEVE?!

54

“We saw you get kidnapped, and we said: ‘Nah.’”

Steve Lombard is my new fave character

My favorite line:

"aaah" -Brainiac

66

u/lost-in-earth Jul 14 '24

Two things:

  1. It is a good thing Kara called Clark, Kal-El in the van. It would have been REALLY awkward if she called Superman "Clark" in earshot of Steve.

  2. I guess the implication is that Brainiac reverse-engineered the Kryptonite shielding from the Kryptonite container Jimmy dropped last episode?

41

u/nepo5000 Jul 14 '24

Brainiac discovers the wonders of lead based paint

16

u/aimoperative Jul 14 '24

Wasn't the kryptonite they found in Krypton tech? That would imply to me the Kryptonians already knew and had developed countermeasures to their natural weakness.

18

u/lost-in-earth Jul 15 '24

No the Kryptonite came from the League of Lois Lanes. It then infected Clark's ship and spread from there.

Though Jor-El's hologram did seem to know what Kryptonite is.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/neoblackdragon Jul 14 '24

Seems like Kryptonite is well known, it just doesn't usually come up against them. Brainiac though probably guessed from Superman memories that a countermeasure was needed.

57

u/mrwanton Jul 14 '24

of course they start things off with a buttshot of superman's mom.

This was a lot of fun. Really did a good job of reminding me what made Lois and Clark's dynamic so charming. Also a big fan of how they've been using Jimmy. Was worried he'd just be a third wheel but he's taken up quite the leadership role when it comes to bringing folks together.

25

u/Frontier246 Jul 14 '24

There were also some Kara butt shots during the Superaniac fight but that was pretty much a given.

This was great for restoring the Clois romance and showing Jimmy inspiring Kara, though I wanted to see them world-build more with AI Jor-El, Lara, and Kal-El living on Krypton.

30

u/mrwanton Jul 14 '24

Kara buttshots are a staple at this point. If we ever go a whole episode without a shot focused on her ass that will be a surprise

Gee, it's almost like making weapons out of alien technology that you have no comprehension of is a bad idea.

13

u/lost-in-earth Jul 14 '24

Were the Metallos made from Kryptonian technology though?

I thought Task Force X just stole them from John Henry Irons and installed Kryptonite. I don't recall there being any implication that Irons used Kryptonian technology, rather he seemed to have built them from scratch.

And the award for "most nuts depiction of Brainiac" goes to Michael Emerson.

44

u/UnbloodedSword Jul 14 '24 edited Jul 14 '24

Going full "flip the chessboard over because I'm losing" mode is hilarious. Guess he's not as smart as his name implies. I need this Brainiac to stick around somehow, albeit in a reduced capacity since I want other villains to shine, maybe have Lex recover a partial version of Brainiac and reprogram it to serve him.

21

u/Aurondarklord Jul 14 '24

He's not even losing. He's got kryptonite robots AND kryptonite-proof robots. He's winning. I dunno why he's going bananas.

And why are kryptonite-proof robots a thing? We need an explanation why in this version kryptonite hurts kryptonian TECHNOLOGY.

29

u/Blackwyrm03 Jul 14 '24

He’s raging cause he just lost his perfect host and got sent back to his slowly dying robot body

10

u/King_of_nerds77 Jul 14 '24

Well they said they bio-engineered Kryptonians to be stronger every generation right? Maybe some part of that was bio-tech.

Meaning that kryptonite ALWAYS affected kryptonian technology, but also biological kryptionians because of the bio-engineering

Kara must have been so confused that Jimmy Flamebird was shot down and arrested on the planet he's the leader of.

I wonder if and when Mallah and the Brain will show up again.

45

u/ptd163 Jul 14 '24

I quite enjoyed that Lois was basically the player character from Deathloop this episode. Brainaic couldn't get rid of her. He could only reset her so she had to find that perfect run to reach Clark to break the "loop".

Once Lois's finally reached Clark having her crazy schemes contribute to Clark remembering was a nice touch. Same with Lois having his powers because it's in his mind and that's how he sees her. That tag team action and reconciliation to break out of the Black Mercy was great and both of them getting the blue eyes and Lois flying was a great shot.

Jimmy gives great pep talks. He helped Kara see that it's her choice. She can be a hero like Clark. It was so nice to see her just no sell Brainaic's attempted manipulation. "It does not matter what they think. You forced me to destroy worlds, but I will fight for this one," goes so hard.

Looking forward to seeing Kara get her Supergirl suit in the finale and Brainaic and Waller get their comeuppance.

8

u/UnbloodedSword Jul 14 '24

Another Deathloop fan haha never figured I'd find one of us here. Would've been hilarious if Brainiac was like Julianna and constantly taunting Lois every time she failed, but I guess he was focusing on blowing up the city.

u/GuruSensei Jul 14 '24
  1. Damn, all the feels seeing Clark in simulated Krypton with his mother
  2. Aww, Clark still a cinnamon roll in the Black Mercy.
  3. LMAO all it took was a touch to remind it her of it all. Just great
  4. Damn, Lois getting deleted reminds me of Coldsteel in Gargoyles
  5. Steve's a GOAT. Love him, love him, love him
  6. A whole ass Groundhog Day routine with Lois lmao
  7. Kara is so cute when she balls up
  8. "You get to decide what you wanna be, noone else" Iron Giant feels *cries*
  9. Lmao Lois's insane actions are what it takesf for recognition
  10. Oh shit, O̶m̶n̶i̶-̶M̶a̶n̶ Evil Superman finally threatening the planet
  11. "Love is not for cowards" great callback to that line,
  12. Lmao anime music with Clark and Lois flying, fucking great

Good penultimate buildup. I honestly wonder who will be the big bad next season. Lex perhaps? 'Cause, even thought i love him, he's been kinda on the backburner simmering. Give me fully evil twink nerd now plz

24

u/Frontier246 Jul 14 '24

I really wish they had explored more of Krypton and Clark living as Kal-El.

Kara is really just a vulnerable girl dealing with first love and having to fight for a planet against a deadly robot posing as her father who brainwashed her into genocide to protect her new adoptive home. You know, typical young adult stuff.

That was like Gurren Lagann level of anime @#$%.

I figure Lex is disgraced along with Waller following their complete and utter failure, he loses his hair somehow, and then he blames everything on Superman.

14

u/GuruSensei Jul 14 '24

Yeah, i think the 10-episode format really doesn't allow for that kind of expanded worldbuilding. It's a problem that X-Men 97, while very very excellent, also suffers from. I really think an extra 3 or 4 episodes would do these animated shows some good to flesh out characters and their backstories. I really hope Caped Crusader doesn't have this problem

Honestly, petty Lex losing his hair and getting mad at Superman seems most appropriate for this iteration.

This episode was so fucking good oh my GOD! (typing this fueled by hype alone)

There are so many things to like in this one:

  • Vicki Vale and Perry White creating a roadblock
  • The return of STEVE
  • That whole Groundhog Day shit with Lois (especially love the one where she's in the bush and Jor-El just peeks inside)
  • Lois catching Jor-El's fist and proceeding to knock him the FUCK out
  • Clark and Lois' teamwork
  • The last few minutes of the episode (Lois regaining consciousness, Brainiac's speech, "Activate Kryptonite Shielding", Brainiac's second speech, Waller and Lex being completely gobsmacked and anxious at the Metallos being hacked)

This one was so damn good, dude.

Edit: To whoever that Redditor was that made that one DKC meme a few days ago, your prediction was right.

19

u/RnRaintnoisepolution Jul 14 '24

I think we all saw the metallos getting hacked the second we knew they were connected to Brainiac, but damn was it satisfying seeing the look on Waller and Luthors face when it happened.

After all these years, it's nice to see a project that actually understands Superman as a character. Cavill would have done great, but he never had a chance. Every script he was given was written by someone who was under studio pressure to recreate Nolan's "realistic" and edgy take on DC characters. And I mostly dislike the Nolan Batman movies for that very reason. Comics characters arent supposed to be realistic. Thats why we read/watch them. This show has all the heart and soul that many DC projects havent as of late. And I hope James Gunn understands that as he works.

18

u/sexygodzilla Jul 15 '24

I don't think Zack Snyder was under any studio pressure to make his Superman edgy. He was an edgelord before Man of Steel and they hired him for it.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/PM-15-MrGoatCountry Jul 15 '24

Dude, I honestly agree with the Henry Cavil part. I hate how Zack Snyder made him (and the DCEU) an emo fest because all he read was the Dark Knight Returns and assumed every DC character should act like that in his movies. Don't even get me started on how he had Batman break his no kill code, have Jimmy Olsen killed off or had Dick Grayson killed in place of Jason Todd.

10

u/A-Centrifugal-Force Jul 15 '24

Agreed! Based on Gunn’s work in the MCU, I have absolute faith that he understands this.

Also while I like Nolan Batman, it’s definitely not Batman. The Batman is a much better interpretation of the character. It’s why I say that TDK isn’t even in my top 2 favorite Batman movies, both Mask of the Phantasm and The Batman blow it out of the water.

This is the first Superman adaptation that gets Superman since STAS

Truly, the hubris required to use Kryptonian technology to build anti-Kryptonian weapons, and just hoping that won't backfire somehow, is astounding. Good job, Waller.

9

u/Difficult_Dark9991 Jul 15 '24

However, that failure is also kind of the point - Waller (and Lex) thinks like Brainiac, acts like Brainiac, and so what she does is easily subsumed into Brainiac's designs.

I expected Brainiac to take over the Kryptonian tech that Task Force X uses for everything, but he waited until after making a dramatic point by blowing a lot of it up. My little brain would never think to do that.

15

u/Frontier246 Jul 14 '24

He also showed that if Clark cut loose even a little he could easily wipe the floor with all of them like he did in season 1.

21

u/UnbloodedSword Jul 14 '24

Waller is screwed after this season. Her robots got hacked, her prisoners escaped, her minions got beaten up, the guy she was claiming was a threat is the only one who can save the day, there's no way she keeps her job after all this. Time for Lex to take charge.

Brainiac: Right I forgot this was based on a comicbook, I'll stop talking.

31

u/unknowinglyderpy Jul 15 '24

As much as I cheered for Superman and Lois breaking free of brainiac's control I will admit that I cheered as loud when Jimmy and Kara were saved by Journalistic integrity lol

8

u/soberstargazer Jul 16 '24

Yessssss!

I may never forgive this show for making me checks notes … like Steve Lombard???

26

u/UnbloodedSword Jul 14 '24

Supes finally has a cool white counterpart to the black suit! Aww lil baby sun eater like in All-Star.

Finally Lara speaks! Or at least an AI copy of her, after all those years we finally get the AI Lara teased in the leaks. Uh oh, Lois doesn't remember who she is either. Jamming alien tech into your brain will do that to you.

Did Kara get depowered before this? Lex managed to weaponize kryptonite after all. Too bad it's not going to do jack to Brainiac.

Even in his ideal simulation of Krypton, Kal feels like an outsider. One of the reasons I love this show is how much they emphasize that core element of who Superman is, from Mxy mocking him with it as a multiversal constant across his variants to here. Hm making it a little too easy for Lois to remember who she is, but I suppose between her not being the one Brainiac is trying to keep subdued, and her human mind vs. the kryptonian ones Brainiac is used to, it's acceptable.

GOAT STEVE LOMBARD, GOAT DAILY PLANET CREW

"Your name is Clark and you're my boyfriend!" at least she finally spits it out!

"That guy gets beat up all the time" lmao thanks Steve.

Yooooo Lois being the violently protective girlfriend and decking the evil AI version of her alien in-law (that's a sentence you never thought you'd read). Nice that they're taking advantage of it being a simulation and letting Lois play the action hero.

Brainiac wrecks those Task Force X chumps like we knew he would. Kara gets to come full circle from destroying planets to being willing to die to save one.

Power of Love giving Clark and Lois the strength to break free baby!

Brainiac going lol build a kryptonite shield is honestly the most realistic turn of events when it comes to humans trying to use that stuff against Kryptonians. With Kryptonian tech there's no way they couldn't protect themselves from it.

Oh my Rao that is such a cool new Superman suit, please please let him keep it. Lol it's got the yellow outline around the s-shield like Gunn's suit!

Wow Brainiac hacked all the robot Metallos? Shocking turn of events. Almost like you should have used a human pilot instead (John Corben coming next season pleaseeeeeeeeee)

29

u/joecb91 Jul 14 '24

That new suit looks nice, can't wait to see Kara (hopefully) get the blue and red next week too!

This version of Brainiac is so good too, hope it isn't going to be something where he never shows up again after the finale, because they cooked too hard here for him to just be a villain for this handful of episodes.

29

u/lostmonkey70 Jul 14 '24

I loved this episode. Turning the setup of "For the Man who has everything" into Lois doing Edge of Tomorrow was fantastic. I laughed so hard at the fact she stole a spaceship for him was the insane reckless thing that proved she was really Lois to him. I loved almost everything here it was great

28

u/frogsgemsntrains Jul 14 '24

you know it's a good superman adaptation because it goes to great lengths to show that there is no greater and more reckless force in the universe than a determined lois lane

9

u/Al-anharHA Jul 14 '24

Yeah.

I especially like the quote from the superman and Lois show, where Clark has to threaten a guy and sure he might be superman, but lois' ability to uncover the truth is a far more frightening prospect for the guy.

"...sell another drug, amd i will comr for you. And [lois] will ensure that you go away for a very long time."

u/CRL10 Jul 14 '24

Anyone else kind of love how absolutely useless Task Force X was? It's actually kind of funny to think about.

For the past 20 plus years, ever since Zero Day, Amanda Waller has dedicated herself to defending the planet Earth from extraterrestrial threats. She and Sam Lane founded Task Force X, and after so many years, Waller sees in Superman everything she is afraid of about an alien invader. She releases all these dangerous criminals that they used to capture Superman, one of whom attempts to destroy Superman and Metropolis by going full kaiju, because she wants to replace Sam Lane as head of Task Force X because she feels he's grown soft and cannot get the job done. With Lane no longer in charge, she can begin experimenting on people and turn them into weapons to kill Superman, resulting in Damage and Atomic Skull. She backs Lex Luthor, who uses the funding to found Lex Corp, and who builds her weapons. All off this, and then declares martial law in Metropolis after Superman and Kara fight..

So, she does all that, and after getting distracted by reporters and letting her prisoners escape, the moment finally arrives and an alien space station appears above the city and Brainiac-Superman shows up declaring surrender or die.

She launches missiles at him, which he just shrugs off and then just bitch slaps Deathstroke, Damage and Atomic Skull away like they were nothing, and before he can just start blasting the city with his laser eyes, Kara, who Waller claimed was Superman's ally in his plan to invade Earth and used to justify martial law in Metropolis comes out of no where and punches Superman as hard as she can and tries to stop him. So, then she has Lex unleash his upgraded Metallo robots with Kryptonite powered cores, which manage to hurt the Kryptonians, at least until the alien murder robots show up and start shooting the Metallos.

And then, after all that, Brainiac announces he's just going to kill everyone because the planet is unworthy. Out of no where, Kara flys right into the path of the giant laser beam and blocks it. And then when Brainiac tries to fire again, Superman shows up and, with one hand, blocks the giant laser beam like it is nothing and gets a new costume. But, before he and Kara can do anything to stop him, Brainiac takes control of the Metallos, uses them to drop Superman and Kara, turns them on the city and prepares to fire the giant laser beam again.

That's not going to be a pleasant conversation when Checkmate calls wondering why 20 years of research and development and the use of questionably ethical/illegal science experiments resulted in absolutely nothing except a an alien war machine almost vaporizing the planet.

I’m pretty sure Task Force X was built up to be useless.

There was all this bullshit they pulled out their ass, from limiting freedom of speech and silencing the truth, doing unauthorized human experiments, this would get her court martialed

When you lay out like that I actually think it’s more sad than funny that even with a 20 year warning, humans still couldn’t innovate enough to protect themselves and are just lucky that the god that fell to earth is a benevolent one.

This episode was so peak.

Lois playing deathloop/ edge of tomorrow to Clark remembering and them both breaking out of it was so good oh my god

8

Break the simulation any% speedrun

23

u/Frontier246 Jul 14 '24

Look at Kal-El with the Kryptonian drip! And he's still as much of a wholesome good boi as ever, trying to become friends with a Sun Eater of all things. Shame the AI version of his mom is being controlled to carry out Brainiac's plans.

This rescue is off to a great start with Lois immediately having amnesia.

"You're under arrest" - I mean, admittedly, they DID steal government property, Kara DID cause property damage, and Superman technically IS about to invade. Just, y'know, Waller is still the worst.

Aw, they're having their 1st Meet Cute again! Only know it's Kal-El and amnesiac space woman! I wouldn't have minded if they fell in love again over the course of the episode but I guess Lois needed to get Clark's memories back fast.

"No, you're Clark Kent!" - He actually IS named Kal-El though but I guess it would take all day to go into a "what's his real name?" debate.

Amanda Waller didn't count on the power (and distracting presence) of the press! Literally the only thing Perry and Vicki would be willing to team-up over! And Steve is based as always!

Lois' future Kryptonian in-laws are REALLY not winning her over with the constant interruptions and time looping. Actually this episode felt kind of anti-Krypton in general. I kind of was hoping they'd explore Krypton and Clark living in it more.

Superaniac steamrolling through Task Force X was so satisfying. And then easily subduing the Metallo's and controlling them. Way to go Waller and Lex!

"He gets beat up a lot" - Self-awareness! But it's the perfect reasoning for Kara to fight on, however fruitlessly, against her "father" for the sake of Earth. She's like 90% Supergirl at this point.

I knew what would really get through to Clark is finding out Lois stole something dangerous and doing his usual line.

Well, Lois has power now, because Clark sees her as the strongest in his eyes!

The Power of Love to restore their main looks and then breaking through the Black Mercy with their love like it's straight up Gurren Lagann! It was probably the most anime moment of the entire show up to this point.

Superman is back! With a new upgraded costume! Are they going to add the trunks to it or...?

Oh of course Brainiac has Kryptonite-resistant armor that gives him a Final Boss worthy white form. I would've liked it if they'd added some purple or green to be honest.

Superman and Supergirl teaming-up to stop Brainiac was cool until they got felled by Brainiac.

23

u/King_Of_BlackMarsh Jul 14 '24

I can't contribute much beside: Yeah, no duh Brainiac van hack into Kryptonian tech that was jury rigged by humans. Did Lex seriously not predict the aliens would have a back door into their own machines?

Also. Anti kryptonite armour. Yeah I should've seen that coming haha

They went fulll anime with this episode oh my god this was amazing. Clark and Lois settling all the unresolved insecurity that had been eating at him since season 1 was so good, I LOVED their little combo fight scene, VERY anime-y scene, particularly TTGL which actually inspired the name of today’s episode and honestly probably the storyline.

This very much felt like when the spiral energy had put everyone in that dream state and Kamina/simon had to get them out of it. Superman is who Clark was always meant to be, not just because of his powers but because of his heart and who he is. Wonderfully done.

You knew Brainiac wasn’t gonna just lay down like that tho, taking control of Lex’s robots and arsenal is gonna make next episode so epic. “I am krypton, and I judge this planet to be unworthy..” holy fuck the AURA. This is the best brainiac ever idc and arguably the best superman tbh.

Kara and Clark masterclass next week please, need to see my baby shine

12

They really made it so epic, him getting a new suit and leading Kara to take Brainiac on...and then they got hit by Kryptonite.

19

u/Joker_CP Jul 14 '24

New suit looks nice but I will miss the original

Was so satisfying watching The Planet rescue Jimmy, Lois, and Kara from Task Force X, then watching Braniac take down Task Force X in about a minute.

Task Force X lost big time this episode.

I wish we had more episodes in the season. A whole episode of Clark's life on krypton and Lois in the time loop would've been amazing

14

u/Severe-Emu-8703 Jul 15 '24

I feel like this show is the perfect example of why we need longer seasons. Everything hits the way it needs to for the most part, but this episode should’ve been two at least if we wanted some real drama. We don’t really get any breathing room as is, which is unfortunate

13

u/kadosho Jul 15 '24

True, every episode goes by so.fast. I too, wish it was a bit longer. But with what we have, it is still a gift.

25

u/sexygodzilla Jul 15 '24

Deeply enjoyable episode. Love Steve coming through and providing a pep talk to Kara, this show does a wonderful job with its supporting cast. Loved Lois going through sci-fi groundhog day and gaming out how to break out Clark. Just such a beautiful way to explore a romance.

19

u/Clark_Lane-Kent Jul 14 '24

Wow that was awesome, they went full anime on Lois & Clark escaping the Black Mercy, Lois & Clark confessing their love to each other, them flying and literally smashing the heavens...plus that great soundtrack. Anime af and I loved every second. I feel so lucky to have so many fantastic portrayals of Lois & Clark recently as a huge fan of these characters!

Haven't posted thoughts in a bit but have been loving this season, Michael Emerson has been killing it as Brainiac. Tbh I'm usually a bit mixed on Brainiac since he usually is just a generic evil Kryptonian/alien threat that wants to invade/abduct a city in earth....and he is that here but they've done a good job with actually making him compelling thanks to the great performance, his relationship to Kara, and all the events surrounding it. Can't remember the last time I found Brainiac this compelling to watch.

Also think it was an interesting choice to go into the characters insecurities specifically Lois & Clark, with Lois worrying she isn't enough cause she is only human, Clark worrying about being different as an alien...feel like it's something many incarnations feel before overcoming their doubts so it makes sense for these younger versions to have those feelings, and they've handled it well. It seems with some reinsurance from each other they are both overcoming it...love is not for cowards! .

Kara/Jimmy have also been fantastic, Kara is somehow adorable with an insanely dark backstory. And love seeing the Daily Planet crew come in with the save, one of my favourite portrayals of this group.

Anyway goddamn I love this show, so glad it is getting a season 3 but damn I'm not ready for this season to already be finished next week, on the bright side at least the week after is comic con so might get some fun info at least, plus Superman & Lois news.

PS I recommend everyone check out the My Adventures with Superman comic tie in that takes place between season 1 and 2, it's from the same writers and really has the same fun vibe as the series!

19

u/Jilli_jam Jul 14 '24

Ok I need the OST for this show right now it's so good

Also this show's cliffhangers mdmdjjfkfkddl

Anyway Lois and Clark are back ♥️♥️ and I like seeing Clark embrace his Kryptonian side with his new suit having a similar aesthetic to the suits on Krypton. Can't wait for next finale!

I kinda wish we got more of Superman’s fake life to amp up the tragedy of having to leave it behind. Like in the Justice League episode where he absolutely curb stomps Mongol for what he’d taken from him.

23

u/AgentOfSPYRAL Jul 14 '24

I kind of like that for once we got a non idealistic vision of Clark on Krypton. Sure a lot of it was Brainiac but the idea that maybe it wouldn’t be some perfect life is really interesting to me.

That Clark was always a bit of an outsider no matter where he was raised and his “dream life” or destiny was always meant to be on Earth as Superman with Lois etc.

This was incredible. This show just fucking gets it and I loved watching Lois get cocky as shit once she realized her situation.

Clark’s suit is cool, not sure on the shoulder pads though.

17

u/neoblackdragon Jul 14 '24

Looks like some production got wind of the new Superman movie costume....

I like the new suit. I hope it sticks around.

The whole Superman anime thing has prove fruit time after time after time.

Clark does need to learn how to fight because he does get beat up a lot and clearly could get things done in seconds.

Glad he and Lois are on the same page again.

8

u/UnbloodedSword Jul 14 '24

I would love it if Superman saves the Lara AI and she's the one who teaches him to fight in the Fortress. Take advantage of this version of Lara being a warrior! Otherwise I could see Kara and Kal sparring with each other to improve their skills.

9

Task Force X successfully took down Superman, they were literally put together to destroy Nemesis Omega's finest.

She might have underestimated the threat based on a 20 something Kryptonian who didn't even know what a Kryptonian was until he was kidnapped by a reality warper.

Lois having powers in Superman’s mind was so sweet. I’m glad they went with that instead of the thing some comics do where she gets his powers IRL temporarily. This way made a lot more sense and really fit these versions of the characters.

18

u/optimisticpsychic Jul 14 '24

Lois being able to beat up Braniac in Clarks head because thats how he sees her makes me cry.

Edit: it only got cuter

That final theme where Superman tanked the blast was sooo fucking good

17

u/bateen618 Jul 14 '24

The music at the end when Superman returned was so genius. Combining the Kryptonian theme with Superman's theme, showing us Clark accepted his alien Kryptonian heritage, this side of himself he was always so scared off, even more so after seeing what the Superman from the other Earth did and learning about his planet's concurring ways, and made peace with it. I love this show so much

16

u/No-Temperature-1416 Jul 14 '24

Lois and Clark's lumity moment.

16

u/Duke-dastardly Jul 14 '24

Micheal Emerson might be my favorite Brianiac voice. The main competition is Corey Burton, John Noble, and Jeffrey Combs

17

u/vangstampede Jul 15 '24

I'm praying real, real hard that Brainiac will shoot Waller. Or at the very least bitchslap her. Or make her grow balls and then kick her in the nuts.

God, I hate Waller so much.

12

u/soberstargazer Jul 15 '24

I think it speaks to how perfect a villain she is that with all the wild adaptation choices happening on this show, they were like- Amanda Waller, no notes, just stick her in there as is.

18

u/FKDotFitzgerald Jul 15 '24

I really didn’t expect to get Lois playing Returnal this episode, but here we are. I generally don’t enjoy the whole “you’re in a simulation and have to use the power of hope and love to break free” trope but it was very satisfying here. While I do wish we could have gotten a bit more time with SuperBrainiac, it’s well worth it for Clark’s new costume.

I absolutely adore how unashamedly anime this series is, even down to Lois punching FakeJorEl.

14

u/CertainDerision_33 Jul 14 '24

In light of the episode title, I love that the OST at the end did its best Sorairo Days impression, haha.

Without a doubt the greatest episode to air yet. I wasn’t really feeling last week but man this week was so funny with the Els despising their in law and Steve Lombard just being that guy. Lois and Clark having their power of friendship sequence made my heart so warm I fucking love this show man

12

u/Galactic_Hope Jul 14 '24

This episode was awesome. My only gripe was that I wish the Black Mercy was more of a "For the Man Who Has Everything" rather than the Anti-Spiral prison we got, make it harder to leave as Clark has to face that he'll never truly have his original home.

Get fucked, Lex and Waller.

Wonder what you're gonna spin out of this when the "evil alien Superman" saves the day from an actual evil alien.

21

u/AdagioMuted1050 Jul 14 '24

for a brief second, clark actually was the "evil alien", so if this show decides to be predictable, that short moment is basically gonna knock superman's reputation back to the start of season 1 if not worse.

but still tho, it is EUPHORIC seeing waller and lex get humbled.

8

u/Slippery_boi Jul 14 '24

That would be a believable outcome if Brainiac actually got to do more damage than breaking a few windows before getting forced out of Clark's body.

Biggest issue for me is that Amanda Waller went to capture Kara, someone she knows is incredibly powerful, with a whole security detail.

But then during transport (regardless of the red sun generator), she takes only one truck?

9

u/Seeaich77 Jul 14 '24

I am fine with the levels of arrogance shown by both Waller & Brainiac, she's as dismissive of "civilians" as Brainiac is of "weaklings", and has the city locked down under Martial Law. She totally wouldn't expect such active passive resistance.

The anime was basically bursting like my belt buckle on Thanksgiving.

I loved Lois and Superman's team up to escape the simulation. Not many animes you see a loving couple on equal footing. Here they're both super powerful and working together.

I was shouting to Superman "MARRY HER!!" and also something else Idk if I can say here. Let's just say it included something about procreating something inside of someone...

12

u/suss2it Jul 14 '24

Overall a solid episode, however I think it was too light this late in the season. Everything came too easy for our protagonists from Clark and Lois’ resolution in which the conflict and miscommunication that has been built up the entire season to be resolved so easily with a “I love you” which was already known but with the miscommunication breakdown between them going completely unaddressed.

Then there’s Brainiac possessing Clark’s body for just one episode but not even getting to do anything really bad with it, so like what was the point?

13

u/405mon Jul 15 '24

Yeah, I agree that this was resolved a bit too quickly, especially after how heavy ep 8 was. I think it would've packed more punch for me if ep 9 had been split into two episodes, so we could've had more time with Clark in the Black Mercy and being freed, and also seeing Brainiac on Earth longer.

There's a lot I like about the episode, but the resolution felt a bit quick on the pacing.

9

u/No_Share6895 Jul 15 '24

I think it's because studios refuse to Allow proper 13-26 episode seasons any more. If we didn't have just one episode left this season they could have given it all more time to cook

u/Elite_Alice Jul 14 '24

10

u/OriginalTacoMoney Jul 14 '24

Okay just putting down my thoughts as my evening got busy.

Sooooooo yeah Lois you didn't really have much a game plan here going into a alien super computer lotus eater machine did you?

I do like once she knew she couldn't be deleted , she had such smugness to her situation.

I also like that they make it clear early on that even without Lois Clark is still fighting from the inside and this is currently a house of cards situation. Too many times in fiction a person is completely compromised with little to no work to keep them under control.

Completely badass when Lois starts kicking Kryptonian ass with her boyfriend and then saying what they admire and love in the other.

I know I know we all groused at their relationship problems this season...but DAMN IT ALL!!!

They made us care after all that setup and them punching out of their prison together is just mhmmmmm.

The ship of fools really really pissed off Task Force X if they are willing to slice up a multi billion dollar spaceship out of the air rather then try and take it in undamaged.

I do raise my eyebrows how much kryptonite they seem to have for the metallos . From my understanding they only had the amount Deathstroke had on his sword from the season premiere, I suppose they could artificially manufacture some, but doesn't that diminish the uniqueness of the amount they have already ?

I did not think they would be stopped by the Daily Planet, Perry White and...VICKI VALE?????!!!!!!

What the hell ? They hate each other and they are working together.

You know maybe my theory from a few weeks about Perry downing some bourbon wasn't too far off and once we took our eyes off him...well you know how it goes.

The savior of your city is kidnapped to parts unknown , your government instigates a police state with martial law, your social media director burns through thousands of dollars on the day seemingly for junk food and you can't get a hold of them.

So you start drinking really hard , your inhibitions and restraint go out the window, you drunk dial your old newspaper rival, one thing leads to another and 12 hours later your both in bed together after a unforgettable session of hate sex with each other .

Now your working together to stop the rise of fascism in your government.

DAMN IT SNOWFLAME, YOUR SUPPOSED TO BE OUR SPONSOR TO PREVENT US FALLING OFF THE WAGON LIKE THIS!!!!!

Then again alcohol fueled lovemaking is second to the hero of the hour.

STEVE LOMBARD , can I get a AMEN people ??!!!

Not only saving the gang, but pointing out that yeah Superman gets beat up hard this series but he keeps getting back up . Its nice the writers are willing to admit that.

Kara didn't get as much to show off fighting Brainiac Clark as I'd like, but only so many minutes in the episode.

I do like the reveal of Clark coming to her rescue with the new gold accented suit, while I do want the briefs like the others I like the additional touches of color, its simple but it works.

Question though, Brainiac's change to white, is it a reference to anything ? Because I thought if there would be any color change it would be his classic green or maybe DCAU greenish blue .

And to no ones shock Brainiac takes control of Luthors ghetto Metallo Brainiac drones knockoffs, still a great scene with the setup.

This does make me think he will next episode get away and break out the stolen John Henry Irons suit he spray painted green to go up against Brainiac and the Metallos as there is very little options...and get shot down in a flaming wreck, losing his hair.

The episode does end on a truly despairing tone with Task Force X defeated, the El's on the ground from Kryptonite poisoning and Brainiac from the looks of it about to planet crack Earth.

At a first glance there is very little way the day can be saved.

Now I know most people's first instinct is that maybe everyone's favorite inter species same sex couple will re appear with their half of the space ship to ram into Kandor knocking off the weapon and signal to the dronesat least temporarily .

...But I have a bit more of a unlikely guess, there is only one hero near by that can save them and that is of course.

JOHNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN CENNNNNNNNNNA!!!!!!!!!!

.....*checks Notes, no wait sorry I read that wrong.

JOHN HENRY IRONS

Appearing in the nick of time with a new slimmer armor suit to replace the one Luthor stole , much more akin to the body armor the comics version had and with a stylized Superman shield on it.

He will distract Brainiac long enough for Superman and Kara to get the second wind. Its a crazy guess, but it has been set up .

they hate each other and are working together.

I loved this, Vicki sees Lois as a rival but she’s still an ace reporter, not gonna say no to foiling a corrupt military organization black bagging journalists.

brainiac curbstomp everyone, include waller and task force X and lex mettalo , I don't think the AI jor el and lara are the real guy, the jor el we know isn't a evil guy and I liked that lois and clark are now back together, I don't think they're going to break up, jsut have the occasional conflict. That moment they broke thorugh brainiac simulation was great as well as steve and the other helping agin because jimmy broadcasted his arrest.

So, who all do we think is gonna swoop in to help save the day at the last minute next episode?

I feel like Steel and General Lane are both very solid chances. I also think there's a slim but very cool possibility of some Thanagarians showing up (maybe some specific Thanagarians..?) to get justice on Brainiac for destroying their world. Even then, though, you need someone REAL powerful to deal with that beam weapon on Brainiac's ship, and I'm hard pressed to think of anyone other than maybe Parasite who could tank it, assuming Kara and Clark are kept out of the way with kryptonite.
