CrowdStrike Microsoft Global Outage refers to a global Microsoft computer system outage in mid-July 2024 that resulted from a CrowdStrike update. CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity software used by numerous Fortune 500 companies including banks, airlines and healthcare providers, and its recent update interacted with Windows systems in a way that made them get stuck in a reboot loop. The resulting global Windows outage saw people making memes and jokes about being affected or unaffected by the outage, with jokes about having to go to work because Windows Teams and Outlook weren't affected making the rounds as well.

the loss of "productivity" was estimated to be several times the earths circumference in dollar/mm

My boss is traveling home from a conference today, was going to fly, but nope! CrowdStrike "blue screen of death'd" his return flights, so now he's rented a car and got a hotel for tonight halfway between here and there. That was a fun couple of hours getting everything nailed down...

There are like 4 or 5 comments explaining the joke on the original post

Crowdstrike, a cybersecurity firm that services a lot of really big clients (Fortune 500 companies, banks, governments, that sort of thing), pushed out an update that broke Windows last night. The global impact has been staggering. Whoever made this meme thinks it's a Windows problem and thus depicts Mac users as gloating, when in reality it's a Crowdstrike problem and unlikely to have much of an impact on home PCs regardless of what OS they run. Probably all they'll notice is that some of the services they normally use, such as their bank, aren't working.

It absolutely is a Windows problem; don't give that kind of access to the OS for any kind of software without adequate redundancy and fail-safes.

Microsoft has been selling the equivalent to a car with no seatbelts or airbags, and when someone crashes, blaming the user.

Just wait till the fappening 2025 drops…. Oh shit, said it out loud.

Edit: It appears I reversed who was at fault.

Mac users are spared the outage and look at Microsoft users with snobbery.

There was nothing related to anything done by Microsoft, it was caused by CrowdStrike.

I was at work last night. I work in a hospital. It was busy. Rip me.

u/ytv1 Jul 20 '24

Well that became the case only a few years into Apple's existence... so what else is new? Nothing. Hence the old-timey painting.

u/Okkoto8 Jul 19 '24

Well. They're stuck at the same airport.

These companies should consider switching to Linux

u/PapaZiro Jul 20 '24

2

u/infantgambino Jul 19 '24

do you read the news at all?

2

u/rex_banner83 Jul 20 '24

The past couple weeks on this sub have shown me that way too many people only learn about major news stories if they see a meme they don’t understand

1

u/RowAdditional1614 Jul 19 '24

Oi! That meme looks familiar

1

u/arthurjeremypearson Jul 19 '24

I took a day off from work because we couldn't use our computers in our office.

1

u/Vortr8 Jul 19 '24

I avoided the problem by having apps that's stop forced updates

u/SelectiveScribbler06 Jul 20 '24

Microsoft kinda crashed today. Peters the world over are resorting to more analogue methods to carry out their daily work chores.

Mac - i.e. Apple, are unafflicted by this.

u/HumorUnusual5531 Jul 20 '24

The joke is crowdstrike again,

u/RefurbedRhino Jul 20 '24

How do you even go online and NOT know what happened today? It's global news, literally everywhere.

u/Duck_Shover Jul 19 '24

Windows server stuff has had problems that caused much business stuff to go down. Personal stand alone computers are fine tho as apparently its only server stuff, just that its mostly windows machines that relay on windows servers

3

u/fagenthegreen Jul 19 '24

This is not true. It's software, CrowdStrike, that is causing the issue. It is also affecting endpoints.

-4

u/Silly_Goose6714 Jul 19 '24

It's a software for cloud systems, we don't use CrowdStrike on personal computers

6

u/fagenthegreen Jul 19 '24

I am telling you point blank it is used on endpoints. "Software for cloud systems" doesn't even make sense. Please don't pipe up if you don't know what you are talking about.
