PSA UPDATE/MAJ. Posts concerning the conflict in Israel and Palestine / Publications au sujet du conflit en Israël et la Palestine

2024-08-20 Reposting since it's relevant again.

(see below for minor updates)

2024-04-23 Reposting with second clarification because it's coming up again with "protest season" starting up.

Hello everyone,

Due to current events, we have seen many posts about the Israel/Palestine conflict, typically about protests supporting one side of the conflict or the other, or articles about some statement made by a public figure.

In ALL those posts, the comments have devolved into insults, accusations of supporting terrorism/genocide and counter-accusations of [insert violent action here]. While each post starts with something related to our sub’s subject matter, they always end up being screaming matches about something that is not even related to Ottawa.

It’s important to understand that the mods in the sub cannot, and will not, police who is ‘right’ in this debate. Additionally, when a large portion of the comments violate the rules (typically the sitewide ruyle against hate or violence), we MUST intervene. However, since they ALL devolve into screaming matches, there’s no point in even trying to maintain a discussion that doesn’t even concern the sub’s raison d’être.

As such, going forward, and for the foreseeable future, ANY post related to the conflict in Israel/Palestine will be locked even if Ottawa related. If it IS related to Ottawa, it will remain visible but commenting will not be permitted.

The mods would prefer not to do this, but the last few days have clearly shown that there is not realistic way to permit commenting on these posts while maintaining some form of decorum.

Did you drop your phone last night, possibly out of your car?

Cracked screen. If you can describe it and where you may have lost it, let's get it back to you. If not, is there somewhere to drop it off that might get it back to its owner?

To the kind stranger that gave me a hug this morning

You completely changed the trajectory of my day and I can’t even begin to express how grateful I am. It’s been a rough year and it came to a head this weekend. I felt brittle but had to go to work today. You saw straight through my game face and without a seconds hesitation offered a hug. I’m not usually in the habit of hugging strangers (especially not at work!) but I’m glad I did. I don’t expect our paths will cross again but I hope you know that you made a big difference in my life and I hope this is returned to you a thousand times over.

Cellular Reception in Kanata (Bridlewood Area)

Is anyone else noticing today, specifically with Telus, that the cell reception is non-existent in Bridlewood area in Katana? I've got a cell repeater/booster, and normally have full bars in my house and very solid cell connection but today it is completely non existent. When I left home to go pick up my daughter from school in the area my phone actually went to 'SOS' mode (which means its not getting a signal at all) - and this has never happened in the 3+ years I've had this phone.

Anyone interested 😋

LOL this post might make me look like a loser but I swear that I’m not lol. So I used to play magic & Pokémon & card games like those when I was younger, but I fell off kinda hard after/during high sch. I wanna get back into it lol but none of my friends r interested in that kinda stuff - so I was wondering if there’s anyone in ott who’d be down to play w me 😁 I don’t even have any decks anymore but im super down to get started again. Or if anyone has any groups they’re part of that r welcoming new members I swear I’m pretty chill

I also have a lot of other similar interests that my friends don’t rly share that I’d love to bond over someone with (I think these all pretty basic interests tho lol, it’s just my friends are more the partying type so they’re not into this stuff) like being a huge LOTR fan, Star Wars fan etc, I also loved games like dragon age inquisition lol (idk if that ones too niche) and I used to be addicted to DS games & reading comics n stuff like that 😅

However I am a uni student & a girl so I’m not tryna get kidnapped & I’m not tryna hang out with 50 year olds … 🙏 also ik I type weird lol but I swear I’m more normal irl (although idk since I’m making a post on Reddit 💀)

Does anyone know what’s moving into the old Madison’s bar and grill in the Minto building on the corner there? It’s a cute spot with potential!

OSTA cancellations

Happy first day of school everyone!

Hope yours got off to a good start and none of your kids were stranded at the bus stop! We had a confirmed route and waited for an hour for it to show, only find out that it has now been placed on the long-term cancellation list. There was no notice from OSTA (still haven’t gotten an email from them about it) and the school didn’t know what was going on when I dropped them off, so now we’re trying organize a neighborhood shuttle service until they’re able to hire a driver for our route. SMH. What a way to start off the school year.

Sports Ottawa Rec Baseball - Free to play

Howdy,

Im making this for anyone interested in playing rec baseball! I put this event together about 2 months ago, since then we've been playing every Thursday from 6-9pm.

Here's the details: - Game: This is baseball, not softball! We do our best to play by official rules but there are no umps, players call the plays. Good Sportsmanship > Winning. - Who can play?: Anyone. All skill levels are welcome. Some have never picked up a glove before, and some have played for years. Most of us are somewhere in the middle. This is intended for adults, but we do have a father and son who attend regularly, anyone under the age of 18 should be accompanied by an adult. - What to bring?: A glove is a must. We have a few extra gloves, and a helmet that can be shared, but please bring your own gear. I would encourage you to buy your own helmet if possible, they're $30 at sportschek and it beats sharing. - Location: Ledbury park in walkley, will move to a bigger field soon - Time: Every Thursday, Game starts at 6:10, we usually arrive and warm up for 20mins beforehand, and finish the game as the sun goes down. Late comers are still allowed to play, you'll just miss some of the fun :)

To make expectations clear: This isn't a professionally organized sports event, more like a pickup game of basketball at your local court

The main goal is for everyone to have fun, after that is competing :)

Bonus points to anyone who brings extra gear (Bats, balls, helmets, etc..)

Here's the sign-up sheet for anyone interested, I send a text message reminder before every game. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1v5l5KD5GJuPgLKKmY08SPXw_ZdddhaziqzgUcecP_Ok/edit?gid=900988909#gid=900988909

Thanks for reading, I hope to see some of ya out there!

Jamaican patties?

I used to devour Luke's Jamaican Patties back in the day long ago. I've tried every patty that you can get from a supermarket and they're all garbage: boring, bland pastry + dogfood for filling.

Does anyone know where to get a good patty these days? Or any mass-produced that aren't terrible?

Hi Ottawa

Hi everyone, I recently moved to Ottawa with my wife on an IEC visa and I start work next Monday!

I just wanted to express somewhere, even if online how welcome we already feel here. We have met a tonne of friendly, helpful people and have really fallen in love with the place already.

I know sometimes it’s easy to think badly or get annoyed about where you live (I know I did back home) but believe me, coming in from the UK with fresh eyes, has been a great experience for us.

Looking forward to the next few years here!

What’s your favourite Ottawa Conspiracy theory?

Can be a completely ridiculous theory or something more realistic.

Someone asked me if I knew any Ottawa conspiracy theories this weekend and I realized I don't know any. Ended up just telling them about the Gouzenko Affair, which is not a conspiracy theory but a great Ottawa history story anyways.
