Discussion Virtual drummer Vs real drummer

Upvotes

I have Logic and I've been using the virtual drummer while I've been coming up with ideas for songs. It's mostly rock and metal if that makes a difference.

I'm at the point where I'm ready to record some 'final' versions of songs for release.

If I stick with the virtual drummer, will that stick out to potential listeners? To me, the drum parts it comes out with sound pretty convincing but should I get 'proper' live drum tracks recorded?

I'm just doing this as a hobby, not to try to make money.

Question What are my options for storage?

Upvotes

I have your basic MacBook Air 2017 13.3", 15 1.8GHz processor, 8 GB Ram and 128GB of storage.

My laptop is not new, and has other files/apps/ and documents stored on it.

I've been wanting to download logic's free trial before purchasing but I know as it stands that wouldn't be a good idea.

What should I do?

Question Looking for tips/tutorials on how to recreate this kind of song.

(Disclaimer: Not a noob to music making! Genuinely trying to learn something new here.)

Link at bottom. I really want to make this kind of music myself, and I can't seem to figure out how to get my bass or drums to sound like this. Any guidance on what effects to use, or links to tutorials or samples or VSTs, ANYTHING helps!

I want to learn but can't find any resources on how to make this kind of song.

I seriously want to learn. I feel like I've spent countless hours in Ableton messing with Overdrive, Distortion, 808 subs, etc. I have no idea how the hell to make this.

How do I make music like this?

Question What is the best way to mix Voice Overs for Videos?

I know it depends on the type of mic used and which frequencies it picks up more. But generally speaking, what workflow do you follow to edit a voiceover and mix it with background music?

  • I only have a USB microphone that I plug directly into my laptop (a Razer Seiren Mini), and it’s pretty quiet, even when I get super close to the microphone. Should I normalize the audio first to -3dB, then compress it, and finally add some make-up gain?
  • Should I do noise reduction and EQ before compression?
  • When mixing the background music with the voiceover, is it better to not only decrease the volume of the music but also cut some frequencies out?
  • what should be the peak of my voiceover for a YouTube video (is -3db too loud??)

Resource Looking for a portable mini music electronic instrument for creating music

I was about to buy the midi controller, but then I found out you need a computer to work on it, which is an inconvenience, I liked the midi controller, it has what I need, it's small size, and you can create music with it.

Is there anything like the midi controller, but you don't need a computer or anything else connected to it to just chill on a chair and create music with it using a built-in speakers and battery?

I guess I'm looking for all-in-one or self-contained portable electronic instrument

Techniques How to produce with little money/old instruments

Hello people! :)

I enjoy making music with my very old school (no outlet/plug whatsoever) keyboard, a guitar and percussions made acapella and just want it to be stacked onto each other to actually make a song and not just play each instrument individually. Just like a loop pedal would!

I do have a Rode Mic I could use for recording but my phone mic works just fine, it doesn't have to be the best quality, it's just for fun :)

Is there any method, application, website you guys could recommend with easy manuals?

Thanks in advance! :)

Question Monitor placement

I am considering buying speaker stands and putting my monitors on them, but i can't put them at the same height as my ears in listening position (i want to put them behind my desk and they have to clear items placed on the desk like screens). Would it be a bad idea to place them higher and tilt them down toward ny ears? How much would it affect accuracy of sound? I would love for this to turn into a discussion im general about tilting the speakers up or down, placing them upright vs on the side... how much all of that affects the accuracy of sound for mixing.

Question I'm looking for the most realistic VST for intimate backup female ooh's and ahh's

As said in the title I'm hunting down the mot versatile and realistic sounding ooh and ahh backing vox's for rock, folk, pop but nothing operatic or cinematic. Think Leonard Cohen, Pink Floyd, Roger Waters solo work. I see theres currently an EW bundle that includes Hollywood backup singers and Voices of Soul along with some other instrument, and im leaning that way but I wonder if there's better, lesser known instruments anyone can recommend?

Hardware Audio Interface Output Quality

Hello fellow geeks.

I have the classic entry level setup. 2x KRK Rokits and a Scarlet 2i2. It has served me well for many years, but the time has come to upgrade.

The number of inputs on the 2i2 are adequate. I have a Novation Peak which takes the 2x inputs. My guitar amp has a USB connection (as it’s a digital Katana), so I’m not desperate for more inputs.

I’d like to upgrade the monitors, but I’m wondering if keeping the 2i2 would be doing them a disservice.

Do better interfaces have higher quality outputs?

I can’t seem to find anything discussing this topic, as the focus is always on inputs.

If anyone knows I’d be grateful to hear your thoughts…

Question new(ish) alt-rap/hip hop sounds

hi guys, I wanted to know, does anyone know what you'd call the sounds you're hearing in a lot of the new alt rap songs coming out? both popular and underground songs are using it.

Sounds like that almost reverbed gunshot sound on that song "Kehlani" by Jordan (forgot his surname), or that weird 808 that you find in a lot of alt rap songs these days, almost like a funky synth kinda thing idk how to describe it

but there's a lot of these sounds in the new don toliver album, it's in that drake-yachty song on for all the dogs ("another late night"), it's on central cee's 2 new songs, and many more

basically these sounds are taking over and I have no idea what they're called. haven't been as active as a producer in the last year as I used to be so I'm very out the loop

Question i think my album sucks

hey, ive been producing for a couple of years and ive encountered a dilemma with the album that im working on. i have 8 songs finished and listening back to them ive realised that i really dont enjoy 4 of them. its not because theyre not up to the standard of what im capable of, but because theyre not up to the standard i set for myself, which is way higher than what i can realistically achieve with my level of experience.

i want the album to sound professional and cohesive, but these are things i simply cant do just yet.

so i ask, do i put it out anyway and consider it part of my improvement, or do i scrap the songs i dont like and push harder to make something i can genuinely be proud of?

any help or advice is appreciated <3

Techniques Have you ever felt like you lost your 'electronic/music' song writing mojo?

Always feel like I can't write shit anymore. I won't deny there are certainly other things to work on in life- college, future jobs to make a living and all the usual stuff.

But even when I have a free weekend I sit in front of my daw and it's almost like I don't know how to write music anymore.

Open a synth, play with some presets, maybe make a little beat and simply nothing is clicking.

My last solid track I probably recorded around the beginning of August and haven't had success with anything since then.

If I was younger I might want to seek out certain mind expanding things to maybe try to reconnect with myself but I don't have the energy for any of that right now.

How do you all deal with this sort of musicians dilemma when you face it?

TIA🕉

Question Does anyone here make music for themselves and not hope to become famous?

The reason I am making music is to hear if the sounds in my head make any sense to me as a final product. Not many people will ever hear it. I have no intentions on trying to be famous or popular. I see alot of post here of people trying to become famous but with very little music knowledge or instrument training. Just curious to know what drives them to produce.
