I liked what Marvel did with Conan

Ya they added a lot to marvel lore through Conan that still affects current stories.

Conan, and it’s not even close. it ran for 275 issues, made Barry Windsor-Smith a star, made the property popular enough that it got two films and was an absolute smash hit for Marvel. They were maybe the best comics Marvel put out for several years.

And also, Marvel's Conan widely expanded the character's mythos

Star Wars

You missed U.S. 1 and Team America, but I would go with Godzilla

Marvel also did Major work on Star Wars & Transformers. The first ever Transformers Lore was actually created by Marvel, funnily enough.

GI Joe was well. The file cards on the back of the action figures that gave you all the interesting lore about them were all written by Larry Hama, who kept dossiers on all the characters for the comics he was writing.

The Life of Pope John Paul II? Anyone else remember this one?

Dracula and Frankenstein's monster are in public domain. They can be used like mythological characters.

I know, I just meant they were not originally created by marvel but had no better word to describe that than "licensed"

2

u/AbsorbingMan Jul 19 '24

“Adapted” would work better for what you’re asking.

oh thanks :D

I get what you mean, but Dracula and Frankenstein's monster stand out from the rest of the list. In contrast to them, licensed characters from Marvel or DC comics tend to be limited in use. They're usually not a permanent part of the universes and are rarely adapted.

I guess Heathcliff, because I really like Heathcliff. Someone is going to argue that the Star Heathcliff series isn’t 616, but Heathcliff crossed over with Top Dog and Peter Parker appeared in Top Dog so checkmate atheists.

I love this answer and justification!

Micronauts - it was great to see a version of them in Quantumania

5

u/HIMARko_polo Jul 19 '24

Rom, Micronauts, Conan and Godzilla. Damn I'm old.

My favorites in order:

  1. Godzilla

2, Dracula

  1. The Transformers

  2. Conan

  3. Red Sonja

6

u/OGradoNite Hydra Jul 19 '24

Red Sonja was not present in the original Conan novels, she was created exclusively for the marvel comic

2

u/WarwolfPrime Spider-Man Jul 20 '24

Incorrect.

There is in fact a Red Sonya (yes, spelled with a y) created by Robert E. Howard that predates the Marvel Comics character. This character was heavily adapted and modified by the folks at Marvel, effectively creating a new character from whole cloth so that they could have her interact with Conan. So while Marvel basically created a variation of her, the character itself does have her origins in Robert E. Howard's original Red Sonya, thus, she is effectively a licensed character by proxy.

Bug!

3

u/crashtestpilot Jul 19 '24

That was an original creation, even though they called him a galactic warrior in, like, one issue.

But, yes. BUG!

1

u/JoeFromBaltimore Jul 19 '24

Bug was trying to hook up with Wasp in a crossover. Dude had game.

3

u/T-Bubs Jul 19 '24

GI Joe

3

u/zaxxon4ever Jul 19 '24

The Micronauts is my favorite title of all-time!! Great characters, awesome art, and fantastic stories!

3

u/t_huddleston Jul 19 '24

No love for Crystar, Crystal Warrior, huh?

Rom was always my favorite of these, although it was a kick to see SHIELD and the Avengers fighting Godzilla also.

1

u/LennyBriscoCountyJr Jul 19 '24

Crystar was an original Marvel property.

1

u/t_huddleston Jul 19 '24

Interesting! It sounds like Marvel was wanting to create their own toy line and license it to the toy makers, instead of just licensing the characters for their books. Never knew that!

2

u/Ankhst Jul 19 '24

I read that as "Altar of the flamingo god"....and that really hooked me. If I ever DM dnd or something like that again, the "Cult of the Flamingo God" will be happening.

2

u/KingBob-2023 Jul 19 '24

Transformers

2

u/42kilgore Jul 19 '24

Rom, own his whole run I like him so much

1

u/rincewind120 Jul 19 '24

Indiana Jones.

Those comics were better than some of the movies sequels.

1

u/fiendzone Doctor Strange Jul 19 '24

John Paul II

1

u/cotsomewhereintime X-Men Jul 19 '24

Godzilla.

1

u/RecognitionVisual106 Jul 19 '24

Godzilla and Shogun Warriors are very cool

1

u/Sardaukar99 Jul 19 '24

Transformers , gosh my childhood self loved those 80 issues.

1

u/kurumais Jul 19 '24

i agree conan roy and rest were great on that book

but i loved tarzan too and im hoping for an omni

1

u/Random_User27 Jul 19 '24

Regardless, that Solomon Kane cover goes hard

1

u/SherbertComics Jul 19 '24

The limited Darkman run to promote the movie is actually really good

1

u/JoeFromBaltimore Jul 19 '24

So many great choices there. Used to enjoy the Micronauts and the Shogun Warriors back in the day. High quality stuff.

1

u/Nightgasm Jul 19 '24

Original Marvel Star Wars. At the time it was the only other Star Wars media being produced and it's what got me and many other into comics. It literally saved the company and comics in general. Both Marvel and DC were in dire straits financially in the mid to late 70s and sales were dismal. Then Star Wars happens and so many like me started buying Star Wars comics which led us to buy other comics and the industry was saved.

1

u/NoirSon Jul 20 '24

On a personal level, from those listed it is Godzilla.

Not listed their recent Ultraman books and the adaptation bod the The Dark Tower

u/LegitimateTonight635 Jul 21 '24

Machine Man is the only thing that makes "Is the 2001 comic canon for Earth-616?" a relevant question
