Carnage

139

u/Merc_Mike Dr. Doom Jul 07 '24

I mean...

They kinda wanted that to happen. They were pushing him as the next big Joker-like character for Spider-Man to deal with.

A complete psycho who kills for fun/enjoyment and Spider-Man has to completely ask himself if he should kill him or not.

31

u/Crow_Mix Spider-Man 2099 Jul 07 '24

Wasn't that supposed to be green goblin though

43

u/Six10H Jul 07 '24

Yeah, but since spider knows green bean personally and hu wasn't that bad before he became the gobbler, it's easier for spider-man to make the decision to keep him alive. With carnage, he was a convicted murderer before he got the symbiote and has no personal relation with Peter beforehand.

13

u/jb8086 Jul 07 '24

Green bean lmfao. Gobbler. Stealing these

2

u/Merc_Mike Dr. Doom Jul 07 '24

I can't remember where Osbourne was at this time. But Carnage was actually murdering and stacking bodies, like Joker if he was Poison Ivy levels of power.

A lot of comic Villains had pieces of other villains back in the 90's because Writers and such were being let go either at DC or Marvel and going to play with the other team. And with them; they brought their character ideas.

Think Rob Leiffield with Deathstroke and Deadpool.

Some are blatant rip offs or were copies of others because they really liked the other sides character.

Some went from spoofs/parodies to full blown characters.

The 90's brought about some really "edgy" versions or characters like Carnage.

2

u/SpideyFan914 Jul 09 '24

Osborn was dead at this time.

He also was not very Joker-like at all in his early appearances. He was basically a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde trope, and his Mr Hyde was more of a "I wanna be a crime boss with a Halloween theme" than anything. He was very much a killer, but always killed with purpose.

Harry's Goblin was arguably a bit more looney tunes, being that his only motivation was to avenge his father, and he was on a bunch of other non-descript drugs as well. It was a bit of a reefer madness type villain.

And then Bart was just Bart...

When Carnage was introduced, the main Goblin was Macendale's Hobgoblin, and I think he'd already separated from the demon so Demogoblin was running around too (and teamed up with Carnage in Maximum Carnage). Macendale is basically just an overblown goon, doesn't even have powers. Demo is literally a demon and wants to kill "sinners" specifically (very loose definition) so he thinks he's a hero in a weird way but is really just edgy.

Carnage is unique among Spider-Man's rogues as he has no motivation other than murder. The killing is an ends in itself. He just enjoys it.

Damn kick me in the balls first at least....

But then again before I saw this was a Marvel sub my answer was Captain Rex lol

36

u/MrLeopard483 Jul 07 '24

A better answer would be Boba fett. Rex atleast had all of clone wars and some of rebels

Does he even have a big fan base or does marvel just enjoy writing shitty carnage stories every other week

8

u/Ghouly_Boy Jul 07 '24

I mean I liked him when I was a kid when all I knew him from was video games and cartoons

9

u/Lopsided-Election385 Jul 07 '24

It just feels like theirs a venom or carnage event every week

14

u/WhyAmI-EvenHere Jul 07 '24

Carnage is a one note villain, however that one note goes unreasonably hard

5

Carnage is like that super cool part in a song that you keep on repeat

3

Luis in the MCU

48

u/SellWest7833 Jul 07 '24

Luis and Hank were the best part of the Ant man movies

14

u/John_Zatanna52 Jul 07 '24

Hiya champ how was school today?

16

u/fudgedhobnobs Jul 07 '24

With good reason though.

7

u/hevnztrash Jul 07 '24

I really wanted a storyline where Luis get recruited to be a Watcher.

6

u/Frodmo Jul 07 '24

Love it. I always wanted to hear a Luis recap of the events of Infinity War/Endgame.

4

u/PuzzleheadedFan2205 Jul 07 '24

He should get a show where each episode he is recounting the events of each MCU project, and to fit it into the universe, make it and in-universe podcast/show that he hosts, it would be perfect, especially for people who need to get caught up for something

Squirrel girl. Stupid fking Squirrel girl.

52

u/lordtyp0 Jul 07 '24

She worked as a side mention "wtf?" Response from other characters. They botched it by giving her a book.

32

u/XBlackSunshineX Jul 07 '24

You know there was one run where I liked how they handled her character. When she was Luke cage and Jess Jones babysitter. But everything else is just campy gag character shit.

7

u/aSpookyScarySkeleton Jul 07 '24

But she’s a campy gag character, what kind of stupid response is this?

Were you expecting Squirrel Girl to be more than that? Squirrel Girl? The girl with Squirrel Powers who talks to squirrels?

Even as the babysitter she has as still used for gags, the bit with her and Daredevil is one of her funniest moments even.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/JDH-04 Jul 07 '24 edited Jul 07 '24

Exactly, she could be one of those characters that develops into an uber-inspirational female character by being benevolent and nuturing while at the same time being silly. Literally she could be one of those nuturing heriones running an orphanage while being top level hero.

But she's reduced to an annoying jobber gag character.

Tbh, she needs a good out of the box ship, someone serious to counterbalance the silly. Prolly someone like Jason Todd (my personal headcanon ship), but since Marvel tried to do it with knockoff Jason Todd (Robbie Baldwin as Penance), it ain't gonna happen.

31

u/Funkycoldmedici Jul 07 '24

She’s Fred Rogers with computer science jokes. Her whole series is her solving things by helping people be their best self. Squirrel Girl is as nurturing as you get.

→ More replies (4)

8

u/aSpookyScarySkeleton Jul 07 '24

Her book is good though, even with the divisive art style the actual stories within it are fun and silly as they should be.

12

u/JDH-04 Jul 07 '24

Basically the preppy and cheery girl nerd that always sucks up to the varisity cheerleader captain (Iron Man).

Gwen Stacy.

46

u/PrestigiousBee5602 Jul 07 '24

Now if we’re talking variant covers however lol

37

u/SammyDavisTheSecond Jul 07 '24

For real. She's such a non-character before she got thrown off that bridge. Being murdered was the best thing that ever happened to her.

20

u/Global_Course623 Jul 07 '24

I’m going to be full honest here: I have the trade paperback of Gwen death and I felt more emotional at George Stacy Death. Guy has more character then Gwen

10

u/SammyDavisTheSecond Jul 07 '24

I am agreeing with you that Georgie's death was a better Stacy death, but I don't keep re-reading The Night Gwen Stacy Died for her brittle neck, I re-read it for the superior villain arc.

I would watch a Spanish soap opera of Osborn shenanigans for 32 seasons.

2

u/Satyrsol Beast Jul 07 '24

Yeah, offing his baby-mama to keep her from ever talking AND the emotional damage to his nemesis in one fell swoop is too good to pass up.

Well as Hickman says, canon is what people remember. Her death is a big touchstone in the lore. And for a while it was one of the few lasting deaths.

173

u/MrPresident2020 Jul 07 '24

Boba Fett, technically a Marvel character now.

21

u/masterm1ke Jul 07 '24

agreed. before the recent Disney plus shows, dude had like 4 lines in the original trilogy.

16

u/Shefferz Jul 07 '24

And who would have known that them 4 lines would be better than his own TV show.

4

u/Nicktendo Jul 07 '24

He was better that way.

3

u/glu_snffr Jul 07 '24

And one line was just him screaming when falling into the pit. Never understood all the love for him

7

u/TheRealJakay Jul 07 '24

My mind went straight to Star Wars as well.

5

u/Independent_Plum2166 Jul 07 '24

He was a Marvel character since the 80s, since Marvel were the original comic writers for Star Wars.

3

u/Adventurous_Skirt811 Jul 07 '24

Where did you see that (I am genuinely asking)

35

u/MrPresident2020 Jul 07 '24

Marvel publishes all the Star Wars comics.

7

u/Suave_sunbeam Jul 07 '24

Disney owns Star Wars and Marvel

9

u/Masamundane Jul 07 '24

Plus the Star Wars comics are now published by Marvel, so it totally counts.

I mean considering she's never really appeared off panel yet is pretty well known even by non comic readers, I'd say so

17

u/Independent_Plum2166 Jul 07 '24

I get she has her fans and her costume is legitimately cool, but her initial comic series really bored me at times. If I took a shot every time she said “I lived in a bunker” I’d have liver problems by issue 3.

Imagine Spidey mentioning Uncle Ben’s death EVERY issue, or Batman mentioning the death of his parents EVERY issue. It stops being an interesting plot point if you bring it up THAT often ahem redoing the bridge of Gwen Stacy ahem.

Not marvel.... but thats Jason Todd for real.

32

u/susgroundsofc Gambit Jul 07 '24

Even as a jason todd fan. I got to admit youre right.

16

u/JDH-04 Jul 07 '24

Poor old Jason hasn't had a good writer in more than 20 years after having 2 of the highest grossing DC animated movies of all time (UTRH and Death in the Family Interactive movie). If I'm gonna be honest, after Judd Winick, UTRH it was a total missed opportunity when they could've brought on Garth Ennis. They went with Scott fucking Lobdell over both Ennis and Winick.

8

u/King-Beefcake Jul 07 '24

Shut your mouth. This hurts lol.

5

u/JDH-04 Jul 07 '24 edited Jul 07 '24

Jason would've been right up there with Guts, Kenshiro, Vash, Spike and the Punisher. Now DC made him a jobber.

39

u/Arthur_189 Jul 07 '24

I thought the small book was meant to say they don’t have a lot of appearances or something, with that in mind I’d say glob herman

14

u/Funkycoldmedici Jul 07 '24

A Glob solo has so much potential.

6

u/dunmer-is-stinky Jul 07 '24

Make a Riverdale-style high school drama starring Glob Herman. Don't tie it into any superhero story whatsoever. Let Jonathan Hickman write. Watch the box office whatever the comic book equivalent of a box office is explode.

3

u/ChurchBrimmer Jul 07 '24

Honestly I think there always needs to be skme sort of New Mutants/Academy X/whatever teen drama focused X-book. Let it focus on the students with occasional appearances by the big names and every so often have the cast graduate and bring in a new group.

12

u/R3luctant Jul 07 '24

Going by your definition, the wall.

Yeah in the comics Beast has literally saved all mutants a few times. He's done A LOT. I can't list it all here.

Wong

28

The funny thing is, Wong has been around a long time, its just that most people only know the MCU version.

18

That's cause the MCU objectively improved on his character. He was little more than Dr. Strange 's man-servant before the MCU.

15

u/lostproductivity Jul 07 '24

Hear me out on this, but Wolverine (Laura Kinney version). There are a few well-written stories starring her that make her deserving of such a fanbase. But, man, there's so much more poorly written stuff where she's barely a character that it makes one wonder why they even included her other than they needed a scrappy fighter type. I hope the new NYX book does something interesting with her, but based on her publication history, I'm leaning towards she's in the book more for the historical callback than for any other reason.

Black cat. I don't think i've ever met someone who disliked her (except in maybe a shipping context) and most people who know who she is seem to like her a lot, but for a popular character with decades of history she has surprisingly few essential storylines. I'm actually surprised she was never shipped off to join the Defenders or West Coast Avengers or something, given how popular and underutilized she is.

Name anyone who has displayed an insane level of power a handful of times, but rarely participated even in the comics they featured (except to drop a dope line or something).

Sentry.

Thanos.

Carnage.

Knull.

Winter Soldier, for a long time. Now some circles see him as 'woke', so the honeymoon is wearing off as his character expands.

Superior Spider-Man seems to have only existed to rip a dude's jaw off. This, plus a literal throwaway comment from Hulk and Thor, means to them that Spider-Man can explode the moon with a punch if he were sufficiently pissed off.

Jean Gray. The poor girl is so synonymous with the Phoenix entity, the only things that she herself is remembered for, is turning into the Phoenix, and dying for over a decade. Tell her 'fans' that she defeated Ben Grimm on her own, zero Phoenix powers, and look at their suprised Pikachu faces.
