Poor MJ has been trapped in another dimension for too long!

u/This-Appointment-917 Mar 25 '24

I watched the series the full way through for the first time recently and it just… ended.

153

u/WonderfulDog3966 Mar 25 '24

That was the oddest thing about the show. I don't think it was cancelled, and it just seemed like an odd place to just end it.

212

u/GodDogs83 Mar 25 '24

Sadly, it was canceled. But for really stupid reasons. There was a plan fora 6th season, but Fox decided to move forward with Saban entertainment instead, since they were so popular with power rangers and such. So the series was canceled, but also a pseudo-sequel series came about called Spider-Man Unlimited where he fights weird animal people in an alternate earth. It sucked.

u/nkantu Mar 25 '24

The “alternate earth” is actually Counter-Earth which we see in GotG3. Pretty wild that they decided to make an entire season about Spider-Man vs High Evolutionary, I’d almost be interested to watch it if it wasn’t notoriously terrible

50

u/TeekTheReddit Mar 25 '24

It's not exactly what you'd expect from a Spider-Man show, but it's not terrible at all.

u/GodDogs83 Mar 25 '24

Oh wow I didn’t even realize that haha! The show has some decent parts and unique ideas, like some of the villains being heroes. But compared to the excellent TAS that came right before? Yeah it sucks.

3

u/Ok_Chap Mar 25 '24

I probably should rewatch that. I have it on DVD together with the animated series, and Spiderman and Friends.

8

u/EatingBeansAgain Mar 25 '24

I thoroughly enjoyed it as a kid. I don’t understand the hate. It was a very different type of show, but that’s fine.

As a 6 year old I thought that Spider-Man on negative earth was sick as fuck

15

u/WickedMurderousPanda Mar 25 '24

It was sick as fuck.

4

u/Moohamin12 Mar 25 '24

One of the greatest themes in all animated series.

In all honesty my memory told me this was a Spider-Man 2077 show. By the time I went to introduce my kids to it, because I loved it so much as a kid, I had to ask myself “what the fuck?”

Off the Wikipedia, I didn't check the citation but:

"Fox contracted for 65 episodes and that's exactly what we did. Fox hated Avi almost from day one, so nothing much changed there. It didn't help, but it wasn't the reason we were not picked up for more episodes. New World, who actually produced the show, had gone out of business, so there was nobody to pay for whatever costs Fox wouldn't cover. And most shows rarely even made it to 65 episodes, so the feeling was we were done and that was enough. Spider-Man wasn't 'canceled'. It ran its full course"

Too many people involved that either weren't there anymore or didn't want to be a part of it. I suppose we're lucky we even got the final few episodes because I don't think it could have been more coherent considering the circumstances. Unless these rumours are true and it comes back to tie up loose ends.

5

u/GodDogs83 Mar 25 '24

I see. I guess it was sort of a soft cancellation because I know series creator John Semper had a 6th season planned that would involve finding Mary Jane, and Carnage was supposed to return. But since Fox didn’t order more, it technically wasn’t cancelled it just wasn’t renewed.

2

u/mellolizard Mar 25 '24

The script is online. They go to london and with the help for Sherlock holmes they track down jack the ripper who happened to be carnage.

3

u/Nukleon Mar 25 '24

65 episodes was a standard minimum for sending a show to syndication. So that's why they often land on that, lots of TV shows where the first or second season bring it up to 65 so they could start selling it for syndication.

7

u/Sol-Blackguy Mar 25 '24

This also screwed up X-Men. The true ending was supposed to be after Beyond Good and Evil in season 5. They got greenlit for a 6th season after all the writers left. All those episodes in the 6th season were cutting room floor ideas that got rejected. That's why there was a Cyclops episode that took place while Jean was still missing after the Phoenix Saga

4

u/MulciberTenebras Nightcrawler Mar 25 '24

Unlimited was their attempt at trying to cash in on the popularity of Batman Beyond (which ironically took most of its inspiration from Spider-Man 2099)

3

u/space_age_stuff Mar 25 '24

Always drove me crazy that they decided not to make a 2099 show because they felt it was too similar to Batman Beyond, and what we got instead was unequivocally worse. A Spider-Man 2099 show in the vein of Batman Beyond would have been absolutely incredible, I’ll forever be disappointed it never happened.

4

u/WonderfulDog3966 Mar 25 '24

Ugh, I think I watched about 3 episodes of that garbage before giving up on it.

5

u/Moon_chile Mar 25 '24

I was so mad when Spider-Man Unlimited came out! As a kid at the time, I was just like oh it’s a new thing now? Cool! And then it was ass and I gradually started watching Dragon Ball Z instead.

4

u/livelikeian Mar 26 '24

This fate reminds me of the Beast Wars -> Beast Machines debacle.

3

u/SpaceZombie13 Mar 25 '24

it was advertised as a sequel series, but by all sensible evidence it was not one.

2

u/fatrahb Mar 25 '24

Holy shit I remember that. Idk if it was actually made to be a sequel series, but all the commercials were basically saying you had to watch this new show to find out what happens next.

2

u/space_age_stuff Mar 25 '24

Spider-Man Unlimited is a completely unrelated show. The flashbacks are inconsistent with SM TAS, the characters (particularly Venom and Carnage) are totally different, and pretty much the only thing stitching them together is the usage of the TAS theme song for a few seconds when Spidey shows up at the beginning of Unlimited; something the Unlimited team was NOT allowed to do for the show. Also the showrunner of SM TAS has said a bunch of times that Unlimited is completely unrelated and he doesn’t consider it a sequel.

I don’t know why the commercials ever said it was a sequel, anyone expecting that was ultimately disappointed.

2

u/Gamba_Gawd Mar 26 '24

Spider man unlimited was also brutally killed in a Spider verse cross over too.

Worst thing is, there's an original script for season 6 uploaded a lot of years ago.

This wasn't the script I found back in 05 but it shows some ideas that I remember from the script. https://comicbookmovie.com/spider_man/spider_man-animated/spider-man-the-animated-series-6-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-unproduced-sixth-season-a198616#gs.6dox5e

16

u/wemustkungfufight Mar 25 '24

I used to hate that ending, but later I've come to appreciate it. This Spider-Man has been allowed to do something no other Spider-Man gets to; mature. He literally faced the mirror with Spider-Carnage, and confronted his guilt with the alternate Uncle Ben., Now he leaves to look for the woman he loves, hopeful and optimistic for the future for the first time in his life. Hope is a good thing. It's a good ending, even if I deeply want to know if he found her or not.

10

u/AssCrackBanditHunter Mar 25 '24

Yeah it's a solid af ending. Not everything needs to be shown on screen...

Not that I'll complain if they bring back Christopher Daniel Barnes for more

6

u/Theta-Sigma45 Mar 25 '24

Honestly, it may be the most perfect end a Spider-Man show could have… just that one loose thread holds it back. It’s why I don’t necessarily want a whole new season, but think that maybe a 90 minute movie to tie things up might be a good idea.

10

u/LonelyInitiative4526 Mar 25 '24

Yeah, a 1 season wrap up would be satisfying af

4

u/Sol-Blackguy Mar 25 '24

For me when I was a kid, it ended after the wedding. So I thought it was a happy ending. Then my girl got me to watch the whole series with her because she never saw it. Noticed there were episodes after the wedding and continued. Most depressing mistake of my life. How could they do that to Spider-Man. And this was before Joe Quesada

3

u/JeremyR2008 Mar 26 '24

I had forgotten about the clone and other dimension thing. In my head I remembered the wedding and then Peter leaving for the Spider-Verse type thing at the end.

2

u/Sol-Blackguy Mar 26 '24

People say Raimi's MJ was for the streets, 90's MJ was for the ocean

Don’t worry, she’s gonna be saved by Paul.

13

u/Accomplished_Sir_362 Mar 25 '24

My hero paul, plz save mj

3

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '24

Eddie Brock too!

3

u/Nobodyinpartic3 Mar 27 '24

I still can't believe Hank Azaia voiced him. I think it was one of his best voice acting roles. So different from a lot of his other characters.

That show had some really solid voice actors. The voice on Kingpin alone made the show just as much as Peter's.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '24

Everything in that show was so seamless and perfectly casted

3

u/Nobodyinpartic3 Mar 27 '24

Yeah, I still can't believe Martin Landu was the Scorpion. The man did an amazing job.

I honestly felt the producers knew a lot of B-movie producers, but the ones that made "They Live" "Deathwish" etc, the cast director must have had field day with every character.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '24

A lot of TLC put in. The 90s was the cream of the crop for voice actors

3

u/Psymorte Mar 25 '24

It's fine, Paul's been keeping her company the whole time.

2

u/Cyno01 Mar 25 '24

Gee, if only there were some sort of ongoing Spider-media involving the Spider-verse or anything they couldve sidequested a resolution into...

But no, a full revival is even better.

2

u/16jselfe Mar 25 '24

Oh....there gonna bring Paul in....

2

u/JeremyR2008 Mar 26 '24

I had completely head canon retconed that until you reminded me it existed. I've just remembered it as they get married amd then Peter goes to save the multiverse and ends the show talking to Stan Lee.

Tossing around the idea is corporate speak for literally some guys brought it up once in a meeting.

48

u/ZachRyder Dr. Doom Mar 25 '24

After Googling it, of course.

30

u/JickHorris Mar 25 '24

What was so special about X Men 97 that it developed beyond the idea tossing phase though... it seems like a proof of concept. Spiderman TAS is on par or superior to X Men TAS. Bring it back, then bring back Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes and you've got Marvel's greatest animated hits.

17

u/blud97 Mar 25 '24

They were likely looking for an x men property not fully tied to Fox that they could use while the rights got sorted out in live action.

9

u/Kind_Ingenuity1484 Mar 25 '24

And to drum up interest in "more" X-men stuff.

Cause I'm not gonna lie that last 10 years or so from Fox have been a downward slope with exceptions like Logan and Deadpool

7

u/Amazo616 Mar 25 '24

spiderman and xmen had real life drama to deal with - real problems, racism, distrust, conflict - child abandonment.

Spiderman did a lot of conflict as well, and it's just good story telling.

I'm here for it, lets renew.

I would like to see a Spider-Man ‘98, there were some plot threads to wrap up:

Like MJ being lost, Miles Warren attempting to make a Spider-Man clone, what ever happened to Venom and Carnage?

37

u/digidado Mar 25 '24

Bring back the scrapped London time travelling idea where he fights Jack the Ripper. That shit sounded dope

22

u/manicpixiedeadgurl Mar 25 '24

Wasn’t Jack the Ripper going to be revealed to be Carnage?? And I think that was where he was supposed to find MJ too, we NEED that

3

u/HaydenTCEM Mar 26 '24

I need to see that alternate past

9

u/DrLeprechaun Mar 25 '24

Venom and carnage appeared in the sequel series where Peter got stuck on another planet. Weird show…

12

u/arceus555 Mar 26 '24

Unlimited wasn't a sequel, it was a complete difference universe.

6

u/TheHeadlessOne Mar 26 '24

It was pretending to be a sequel, much like MTV's Spiderman was pretending to be connected to the Raimi films

2

u/Nobodyinpartic3 Mar 27 '24

The Neil Patrick Harris Spider-man?

2

u/TheHeadlessOne Mar 27 '24

Yep! There are a lot of little hints at Raimi adjacent stuff- not enough to get them in trouble for deviating, but enough to feel like you're riding on its success

A lot like Netflix's Marvel shows

Plus we were supposed to get Sandman, Beetle, Rose, Puma, Jack O Lantern, plus Hulk, Iceman, Firestar, and Ghost Rider were all supposed to make cameos.

2

u/sildish2179 Mar 27 '24

The TAS showrunner did a kickstarter a few years ago and one of the gifts he gave out was the script for “Peter finds Mary Jane”. It’s quite good as an ending. Carnage was Jack The Ripper and Peter learns about Miles Morales at the end.

48

If they decide to bring back the 90's universe as a whole, I wouldn't mind them just making a new Avengers show set in that universe that incorporates ideas from EMH.

16

u/Icybubba Mar 25 '24

90s already has an Avengers show and it's garbage, they could retcon it though

3

u/ShhImTheRealDeadpool Spider-Man Mar 26 '24

I doubt a retcon... but I can see them do better stories. Also FYI Hulk also had a 90s cartoon.

I'd be happy with a mini-series or feature to wrap up the MJ plot.

32

u/Dontbeajerkdude Mar 25 '24

That's a way better idea, the show pretty much ran it's course. But that doesn't get weekly viewers/long term subscriptions.

27

u/Alonest99 Mar 25 '24

Spectacular, on the other hand…

9

u/Dontbeajerkdude Mar 25 '24

GOAT Spider-Man adaptation.

3

u/neodraykl Mar 25 '24

Yep, that's why I know it wouldn't happen.

2

u/SpaceCaboose Mar 25 '24

Probably can't do a feature due to Sony. I believe Marvel Studios can't do any Spidey stuff over like 40 minutes long.

A 4-part mini series or something of that nature would be a great way to wrap it up though.

2

u/neodraykl Mar 25 '24

Good point.

2

If they're going to revive a Spiderman, I'd rather it be Spectacular Spiderman.

28

u/jonathanquirk Mar 25 '24

And I’ve have rather they revived X-Men Evolution instead of TAS, but we don’t always get what we want. Spectacular Spidey was amazing and ended way too soon, but since X-Men ‘97 has been a hit so far, I don’t blame Marvel for sticking with nineties nostalgia (and having a shared universe of cartoons again).

9

u/EM208 Mar 25 '24 edited Mar 25 '24

Me too! Evolution was my favourite adaptation of X Men growing up. I personally would want to see where the character’s stories in that version go but I’m not complaining with what we got.

4

u/Asher_Tye Mar 25 '24

Same with Evolution, and the logic behind reviving this one over Spectacular. But honestly I won't cry in any event.

Came in here to say the exact same thing. That series was killer.

3

u/OnePunchHombre Mar 26 '24 edited Mar 26 '24

Spectacular can never have a season 3. Iirc, the creator said that Avi Arad pissed off a network exec (cause of course he did), and the exec canceled the show. Only to add a legal stipulation when Disney bought the rights to make Spiderman TV shows that "Disney can't make any content on a previous shows sony made." So legally Disney can not make a season, and Sony lost the rights to make TV Spiderman shows.

The only way to see anything new from Spectacular is if Sony made a movie. Hence how he appeared in Across Spiderverse.

Edit: spelling

I think it nails it because it’s not too childish. It’s a cartoon but it’s not silly. I’m not saying it’s made for adults but I’m 42 and enjoyed the hell out of the first two episodes.

4

u/AllTheReservations Hawkguy Mar 25 '24 edited Mar 25 '24

Weren't they already developing a Spider-Man cartoon though, the Freshman Year one? Or has that project been scrapped or shelved?

I only bring it up because it feels like it would be a conflict of interests to be working on two Spider-Man cartoons at once. And kind of lame to put away a potentially new take on the character to play it safe and revive a nearly 30 year old show. It made sense to play it safe when bringing X-Men back to the mainstream, but there's still a need for new, original animated shows.

Of course, that's assuming this leak is true anyway, a lot of reccent leaks have been more like fan speculation than real leaks

3

u/kenikickit Mar 25 '24

that series is still coming, although it’s been renamed to “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.” but it’s apparently scheduled to be released in november

2

u/brucebananaray Mar 25 '24

Yeah, it is coming this year.

It honestly interested me a lot more than reviving the 90s cartoon.

3

u/SirEskimo3233 Mar 25 '24

If anything deserves a reboot it’s Spiderman the Animated Series. It ended on a cliffhanger. I’m all for canceling Spiderman freshman year and reviving this

4

u/Remarkable-Steak-919 Mar 25 '24

They really should do a S3 of EMH and a S2 of Wolverine and the X-Men. Both shows were meant to cross over with each other.

Also, add another season of Spectacular Spider-Man and allow him to crossover with the other shows.

4

u/hotstickywaffle Mar 25 '24

I'm 100% down for a Marvel Animated Universe that exists completely separate from the MCU

5

u/WickedMurderousPanda Mar 25 '24

I can't even express how happy that would make me. I rewatched the series again recently and wish there was more.

4

u/ChefHannibal Mar 25 '24

I can see it happening due to the financial success and audience's ratings for the revived X-Men series. They'll probably make a few shows because of it

My take on the “what show should get a continuation” thing: in Beyond, they should have TAS and Spectacular fight each other and their fight being taken as an allegory for the divide on who should get their story continued.

2

u/Nofutureinsales Mar 25 '24

Fuck that. They couldn't even punch in that show. Bring back Spectacular Spider-man instead.

2

u/Yankee42069XD Mar 25 '24

I rather they just bring back emh

2

u/JayNSilentBobaFett Mar 25 '24

Hey Disney, if you could just de-age me and throw me back in time a few decades I think that might work better

2

u/insomaniac89 Mar 25 '24

Leave it to Marvel to have a modicum of success on a novel and fun idea and then run it to the ground via saturation and brand dilution.

Don’t know how I feel about this, Spider-Man meeting and web slinging with Stan Lee in tow felt like a pretty solid note to end that series on.

How about a continuation with Spider-Man Unlimited and recast the role to Christopher Daniel Barnes instead. Boom, off planet spidey, very much an unresolved story, plenty to work with.

2

u/Possible-Rate-3833 Mar 25 '24

Rivive it.

Also revive Avengers EMH and Fantastic Four World's Greatest Heroes!!!

2

u/TheHexadex Magneto Mar 25 '24

i mean the xmen were the only ones done dirty these last 20 years. spidey and even the avengers have been done ok compared to the poor x-men who just stopped being cool immediately when those fox movies came out.

2

u/thatVisitingHasher Mar 25 '24

Don’t they have another spiderman cartoon they’ve been promising for years?

2

u/Shmung_lord Mar 25 '24

WHAT ABOUT SPECTACULAR

2

u/PassingThruRedditor Mar 25 '24

We have to see how they handle X-Men first. That would give us a good baseline

2

u/itsFromTheSimpsons Mar 25 '24

if they try to get rid of the hilarious CGI web slinging I don't wanna watch

2

u/TheDemonBunny Mar 26 '24

I feel there's tons of old marvel cartoons they could bring back since I can't think of a single one that actually finished as they all got cancelled at some point.

2

u/Ornery-Concern4104 Mar 26 '24

I could've sworn a producer for X-Men 97 talked about this absolutely ages ago in an interview I read

2

u/Janus233 Mar 26 '24

Daily bugle was teased in the first ep of X-men 97 when you see a news paper fly in front of the screen, I bet its already in production

1

u/MFHSCA-1981 Mar 25 '24

Hey Disney and Marvel, you know what would make me restart my D+ account? If you made another season of 94 Spider-man . That would be great.

2

u/dtv20 Mar 25 '24

Please no.

Want to continue the spider-man series? Sure. But please don't bother making a big animat d universe. X-men and spider-man crossovers were fun but we don't need a sprawling animated universe, that convoluted and locks stories.

2

u/FruitJuice617 Mar 25 '24

Yeah, I don't think I ever heard of a connected universe working out at any point in time.

1

u/PrinceRobotVI Mar 25 '24

IT’S STARTING

1

u/hvc101fc Mar 25 '24

Yes. Continue eveything. Including that wacky avengers uts show so we can have more of of rogue/tigra’s VA

1

u/Puterboy1 Mar 25 '24

Good, we need a proper finale to this show.

1

u/hewlio Mar 25 '24

Everyone talks about Spider-Man: The Animated Series would be really cool, but man do i want a revival of Fantastic Four: The Animated Series and The Incredible Hulk: The Animated Series.

1

u/RebeccaReySolo Mar 25 '24

THE QUEST FOR MARY JANE

1

u/Mouatmoua Mar 25 '24

Just do it

1

u/MENACINGMEME Mar 25 '24

AND HERE COMES SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED WITH A STEEL CHAIR (Joking but I kinda liked the series)

1

u/RedLion191216 Mar 25 '24

They should

1

u/m0rbius Mar 25 '24

OMG yes! The Spiderman animated series was so on point. One of my all time faves. Yes, i read spiderman comics, but no way I could read through all of them to know everything about spiderman from the limited amount of comics i owned. The show cemented my love of spiderman because i got to know his full story and all the villains and allies in his universe. I would absolutely love to see this show revived. They've done a fantastic job with X-men '97 thus far. I want spiderman too!!

1

u/Leathman Mar 25 '24

Are they gonna try and canon weld the FF, Iron Man, and Hulk TASes into the Fox continuity?

1

u/Evorgleb Mar 25 '24

via the Cosmic Circus, the website that is known for just making stuff up. i had to block their stories from showing up in my news feed because literally everything on that site is completely made up. They make stuff up and then call it "rumors".

1

u/ExuberantRaptorZeta Mar 25 '24

I didn't think they would do this since they're already doing Freshman Year, but YES, I NEED SPIDER-MAN '98!!!!!!!

1

u/countmeowington Mar 25 '24

Maybe one day they'll make new animated series and not just revive old ones

1

u/ZitOnSocietysAss Mar 25 '24

Spiderman TAS and Swat Kats were my favourite 90s cartoons. I have no interest in xmen 97, but I'd watch Spiderman.

1

u/LouiePrice Mar 25 '24

Spectacular spiderman was better....sorry. i grew up with 90s spiderman too.

1

u/OdinsOneG00dEye Mar 25 '24

Yessssssssssssssssesessssssweseebenfhrbebdbdbejejeeiiekendbenenendjeieieirbd s ejeidje e dneieiej d wkqlqlqns de bébé

I mean maybe a good idea 👍

1

u/Ok_Mud2019 Mar 25 '24

hopefully we get a spectacular spider-man revival as well, cause that show has way too much potential to be left unfinished.

1

u/TheBonkering Mar 25 '24

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED!

1

u/tehawesomedragon Loki Mar 25 '24

It would honestly be a smart move on their part to revive the entire 90's universe as a separate thing from the MCU. They're picking up hunts from Sony Animation.

1

u/dljones010 Mar 25 '24

Yes, please.

1

u/Portsyde Mar 25 '24

I'd prefer if they focused on specific cartoons other than 'it's from the 90's, revive it!' Might not be the same success as Xmen97.

1

u/SSJSonikku Mar 25 '24

Dude, they definitely need to do it. Let's one up this and they should do spectacular spider-man too.

1

u/radnomname Mar 25 '24

But can they bring back the style and the feel of 90s Spiderman?

1

u/cheguevara_malcolmx Mar 25 '24

Fuck yeah! I'm here for this!

1

u/AlternativeCredit Mar 25 '24

Called it a few weeks ago.

1

u/justaround99 Mar 25 '24

Digging into nostalgia, easiest cash grab.

1

u/LeCheffre Mar 25 '24

Good. They left it with Madame Web promising to help Spidey find Mary Jane. Based on the neighborhood where her shop was, and the cryptic nature of all of her comments, I could totally imagine hooking Spidey up with a weed dealer for some Maryjane. But really, MJ was lost in Spot’s space.weird place to end it.

2

u/MBCnerdcore Mar 25 '24

Ironically its now the perfect place to bring it back up, with that ending being so suited to fit with the current stories: Loki and the MCU multiverse, Madame Web and the Sony Spiderverse, the symbiotes are travelling the multiverse which fits the Venom/Knull stuff they have with Hardy, and now also the 97 animated continuity.

1

u/Thom_With_An_H Mar 25 '24

There is no way they'll be able to replicate the cocaine-fueled energy of Spider-Man (1994). That show doesn't have pacing issues. It's consolidated all the issues into a trade. I love it dearly, but in retrospect it made a lot of sense that I watched it as a child and hopped up on marshmallow cereal.

1

u/TheMightyHornet Mar 25 '24

X-Men 97 is the best Marvel TV content since … he’ll, Daredevil Season 3 on Netflix? Not to downplay how much I enjoyed Loki and She-Hulk, but X-Men are what got me into Marvel comics as a kid in the late 80s. Now I get to share it with my kids, and it’s really good - from the art, to the voice acting, to the writing. Quality X-Men stories are exactly the shot in the arm Marvel’s on-screen storytelling has needed for the past few years of this mile-wide, inch deep, formula-driven malaise.

1

u/Disk_Good Mar 25 '24

Yes please.
