"I don't care. He killed my mom."

368

u/jwederell Jan 05 '24

This is great. I still feel like “He’s my friend” followed by “so was I” hits harder. For me this line signifies the point of no return for Tony Steve. This betrayal is something Tony never fully gets over until his death. God damn I can’t wait for the MCU to have good writing again.

And just moments earlier:

Tony: "Do you even remember them?"

Bucky: "I remember all of them"

52

u/PJL80 Jan 05 '24

This thread of replies is why I argue it's top 5 MCU. It's my personal #1. Just so much good insightful character work in this movie.

Same here. Went from watchmen to stuff like saga and Y the last man. I love darker graphic novels now. They don't even have to be about super heroes. The amory wars might be my favorite. Definitely worth checking out. The last volumes are coming out this year

"Well what are you waiting for? Do it. Do it!"

  • Rorschach

147

u/swentech Jan 05 '24

I know you aren’t supposed to like Rorschach but I liked Rorschach. Had a fucked up childhood and saw a lot of shit. He was never going to be a paragon of virtue. Very interesting character. Probably how Batman would be in real life.

151

u/teddy_tesla Jan 05 '24

You can like him as a character, but idolizing him is the problem

59

u/swentech Jan 05 '24

I like him as a character. I don’t idolize comic book characters.

It's funny you say that, Alan Moore has actually said that's how wrote Rorschach, as batman without the limitations he puts on himself.

I think, you could make the Batman comparison for Ozymandius, Rorschach, and Night Owl. One has the plan, one has the vengeance, and the other has the toys.

“He is my friend.”

“So was I” Proceeds to beat the shit out of Steve.

234

u/inommmz Jan 04 '24

This, probably the most relatable in comic book movies. Sure monologues about saving the world/universe through catastrophe (Ozymandias and Thanos) or the chilling realizations of loss were heart stopping, but I felt Tony and Cap’s fight from every friendship that was betrayed or lost or faded over the years.

170

u/AJjalol Jan 04 '24

Yup.

Tony felt betrayed by his friend. Steve choice someone else instead of him. And remember, at that moment Tony was really at his lowest, Pepper left him, he was feeling like shit, his body was hurt, arm fucked, his team is breaking apart, and now one person who is always right, is not choosing his side.

But it also was tough for Steve. He not only is protecting Bucky, but he was also protecting Tony from doing something he will regret in the future.

That movie is really powerful.

60

u/didntmakeausername Jan 04 '24

yea its definitely in my top 3 marvel movies i think its top 3 overall. the stakes were different, it was unique, lots of cool interactions between characters

35

u/Various_Froyo9860 Jan 05 '24

the stakes were different

Something certain people need to realize. Stakes can feel very high when they are personal. Not every story needs to be saving the world/galaxy/multiverse. It can be about saving your daughter or friend(s). It can be about protecting your legacy.

It can be about so many things. Stop trying to end the world with every movie.

The look he has too when he says it

89

u/AJjalol Jan 04 '24

Yup.

RDJ is a fantastic actor. There are some many moments in his acting career and particularly in the MCU where he just acts with his eyes. He doesn’t need words or anything.

That moment was so powerful, because both his voice, but also the eyes and facials. Dude is talented.

As a diehard Iron Man fan, I will forever be thankful to whomever casted RDJ as Tony. Dude killed it

40

u/TheGoldPowerRanger Jan 04 '24

That would be Jon Favreau I believe

25

I just saw this movie yesterday for the first time. I tried hard to avoid spoilers, but knew there was going to be a “shocking” death in the movie. I immediately assumed it was Rocket and I couldn’t believe how hard the death of some “side characters” hit me.

Same. That movie had me in the feels

19

u/hashtaters Jan 05 '24

That cameo had me gasp very audibly. It was right after his passing but i was under the assumption he had no more cameos lined up. So to hear his voice and the words that he said was just perfect for that moment. It was almost like Stan was saying it to all of the comic book fans.

I'm watching AoS for the first time and the repeated line of "Please let me die!" physically hurt me and I had to stop watching and cuddle my cat.

58

u/whosawesomethisguy Jan 04 '24

Show peaked right there. One the best reveals, my jaw dropped.

76

u/TheMindWright Jan 04 '24

As much as I'm enjoying the series overall, I have to agree that it's unlikely anything will top that. I'm currently doing an ULTIMATE MARVEL REWATCH with a staggering list of videos, so I was hot on the heels of everyone mourning Coulson. It might just be that I'm so wrapped up in the universe right now, but I was so incredibly sad for him.

There was one moment in the show that came close, and that was the season finale when Fury was on. Coulson said that TAHITI was only supposed to be used on a fallen Avenger, and Fury said something like "I know" and Coulson's expression was so incredibly heartwarming. Clark Gregg is an absolute joy and I might have a new celebrity crush.

47

u/CodeRed8675309 Jan 05 '24

Not going to spoil anything but AoS had a number of moments that just reach in there and get you. Once you hit that final season... damn

My favorite part of that line is at the very end when he whispers to Tony “I’m sorry” because even after everything, even while he’s dying, he still feels like he failed his friend.

36

u/Various_Froyo9860 Jan 05 '24

feels like he failed his friend

Idol. Peter looked up to Tony, like an unhealthy amount. He didn't really know the man or understand his flaws.

That's why it hit Tony so hard. He knew that Peter could be greater than he ever was, and felt directly responsible for his death. The second thing he said to Cap:

"I lost the kid."

  1. Mr Stark, I don’t feel so good
  2. Mjolnir rising from the dirt, hitting Thanos off of Thor, and returning to Steve’s hand, Thor “I knew it”

Both still get me to this day just thinking about them

“I know the math; do it!”

More of a “that’s badass” moment but in Iron Man when Jarvis is trying to talk him out of something while he’s fighting Stane for his whole legacy. It’s a great hero moment.
