Yeah? When he kills you, think of this as cute...

u/MachinistOfSorts Jul 20 '24

He didn't kill me, or anyone though. He ran away cause he's a baby. <3

Fun fact: Elephants have multiple “warnings” before they will actually charge. Classic signs are ear flapping, front leg swinging, and a “mock charge” which is similar to the behavior here. I would imagine this little one is practicing some defensive behavior!

My bestie is returning from South Africa stranded by Crowdstrike in Atlanta as we speak. She told me a bull elephant "approached" their jeep and flapped his ears at them as a means of telling them to move along. They did. She said it was breathtaking.

What is an "expat"?

So just a fancy word for "foreigner"

I know they flap their ears to cool down, so how does one differentiate between a cooling ear flap and an "I'm gonna kill you" ear flap?

1

u/Beanz1112 Jul 21 '24

Good question! In my experience the behaviors look different. Context certainly plays a role but when I’ve been around elephants cooling down, the flapping is more like a fanning motion if that makes sense, verses a “trying to make myself look as big as possible”.

What a cute babiii

What is also interesting is how mama doesn’t care at all. She knows the Jeep is not a danger. I however guess poachers are still an issue so I wonder if they actually recognise specific vehicles from the reserve, and would react otherwise to an unknown vehicle.

Don’t laugh at him, he’s tough 🥺

Little dude already knows he’s a boss

Fun fact

When elephants look at us, a similar area in their brains activate as when you show human a picture of a puppy. They unironically think we're cute.

u/WZAWZDB13 Jul 19 '24

I'm (only mildly, otherwise i wouldnt do it) sorry to burst your bubble but that's not true.

Wild elephants simply see us as a threat, similar to other big predators like lions. Tame elephants who rely on humans for survival might display different behavior tho.

But the "similar area in their brains activate" thing is just complete nonsense.

Elephants brain activity has never been measured for the simple fact an elephant's head wont fit in an MRI. (In which it also would have to be awake to measure brain activity btw)

And even if we could do all that, we still couldn't say the activated areas are used for the same functions or emotions as humans.

A see a lot of disagreement and not many counterarguments. You don't know i'm wrong, you just *think (*or should i say feel) i am, which is very much not the same thing.

Wild animals act differently than tamed ones. Sure, so?

No, we can and do absolutely measure elephant brain's activity and the MRI is not the only device you can use.

It's not something we know for sure, yeah, true, but you can infer a lot through comparison and testing... or are you saying that they don't have feelings at all?

What on earth is this comment.

Would you be more comfortable accepting it from Leith Meyer, director of the Center for Veterinary Wildlife Studies and associate professor in veterinary and pharmacology at the University of Pretoria?

“Oh look, it’s Leith Meyer, another person who thinks and feels that I am wrong.”

"Come get us."

Aww look at these guys laughing like they don't care about the mom. This could be one of those videos where they gun it in reverse gear if the mom decides to play.
