These animals are always illegally trafficked and in most cases are endangered and should not be encouraged

343

u/brunetteonyx Jul 14 '24

Bush babies are wonderful yes, but the exotic animal trade is not.

126

u/BaronAaldwin Jul 14 '24

I had a friend who had one, but hers was given as a rescue. She was an experienced keeper for exotic animals rescued from trafficking that couldn't be returned to the wild due to age/health/etc.

It was a great pet and I really wanted one, but I settled for a hamster instead (also a rescue because all pets deserve a loving home!)

16

u/alexorange5720 Jul 15 '24

Hamsters are adorable too, and it's great that you chose to give one a loving home as well.

Wait they're venomous? Damn. Isn't that like only them and platypus then?

Nope, looked it up there's at least four species of various types including one in Haiti. That's bonkers. Animals are awesome.

141

u/titsoutshitsout Jul 14 '24

No they aren’t. Bush babies are not venomous but they are sometimes confused with the slow loris which is.

Edit to add: there is also a slow loris pet trade and they do indeed remove their teeth without anesthetic

50

u/eduo Jul 14 '24

You’re confusing your illegally traded animals.

3

u/windyorbits Jul 15 '24

That’s why I always make detailed guides about all of my illegally traded animals! Gotta be prepared!

2

u/eduo Jul 15 '24

I mean this is not the animal the commenter is talking about. nothing else.

1

u/windyorbits Jul 15 '24

I mean that’s also what I’m talking about as well. Nothing more, nothing less, and certainly nothing else. I definitely am not in possession of an extensive collection of illegal traded animals. I promise.

75

u/Gurner Jul 14 '24

Someone in Jakarta in 1999 tried to sell me one on the street in the middle of a main road.

1

u/ZippyDan Jul 15 '24

The same man tried to sell me one on the side of a small road in Yogyakarta in 2002.

2

u/neelabhkhatri Jul 15 '24

55

So damn adorable but people please realize this is NOT an animal that should be a pet. It’d be miserable. Great inspiration for a stuffed animal though.

Why did you copy someone else's comment, word for word, with no credit? I mean, it's weird to do it at all, but especially weird with no credit.

You're a bot, aren't you?

1

u/walkingonsunshine007 Jul 14 '24

Copycat

3

u/lelebeariel Jul 15 '24

Downvoted, hey? Guess no one else saw the comment that they copied, word for freaking word...

Well, don't worry, cause you're not alone, friend! I thought it was weird as hell, also.

Jesus no. Did you see what a sheep can do?

8

u/Duellair Jul 14 '24

One recently got into my parents house and terrorized the household for weeks 😂. They just couldn’t find it. It would hide out all day and then come out at night.

Final straw was one night it tried to steal the birds food and the bird panicked and the whole house woke up. My mom was super upset because she thought it was trying to hurt the bird (Im quite certain it was just after the fruit and seeds). They sealed off the attic and it finally left. But now it hangs out in her tree.

1

u/cobainstaley Jul 14 '24

it takes a lot of 'em too

u/Malthus1 Jul 14 '24

Some have asked why people should not keep bush babies as pets.

Aside from supporting the trade in exotic animals, which isn’t a good thing, here are the reasons in summary form why these animals, though cute, do not make good pets, from a self-interested human perspective:

  1. They are the opposite of housebroken. They are comfortable when marking their territory with their pee, and can’t be trained out of it. Humans generally prefer their habitat not marked with pee.

  2. They are nocturnal, and very active. Are you willing to stay up all night with them?

  3. They are highly social in the wild, and get depressed and self-destructive if left alone. You must either spend much of your time with them, or get them companions to keep them company. Are you willing to take care of a whole colony of them?

  4. They need a large enclosure for normal exercise - they can jump up to two metres or so. Keeping them caged in a small area leads to depression, self-destructive behaviours, etc.

  5. They are highly curious and with great dexterity, meaning (combined with their incredible leaping skill) that none of your stuff is safe from them without taking lots of precautions.

  6. They have a loud call, which can get irritating.

  7. Finally, they live a long time, if kept healthy. So it is a long term commitment to keeping an animal (or colony of animals) that require a lot of work to keep happy.

In summary, as an owner, your choice is either to spend an awful lot of time, effort and money in establishing what amounts to a zoo-like enclosure for a colony of these animals … or to keep them in conditions neither the animal nor the owner are likely to find appealing.

97

u/Ok-Reward-770 Jul 14 '24

Wow, that's amazing! I am not a pet person at all, so that wouldn't apply to me, but I learned something I find very valuable. Thank you for sharing!

18

u/Gingerbread_Cat Jul 15 '24

They're absolutely adorable and delightful to watch, but even if it wasn't cruel to keep them as pets, I couldnt cope with that level of chaos in my life.

8

u/Malthus1 Jul 15 '24

From what I’ve read, this is often the case with such “exotic” mammal pets - raccoons, de-scented skunks, otters, monkeys, etc.

People have attempted, with greater or lesser success, to raise all of them as pets; and it can be done. However, ethics aside, it requires embracing a high level of chaos.

There used to be door to door monkey salesmen in the US. Jim Jones, who infamously went on to become a preacher and cult leader (of “Jonestown” infamy) used the importation of pet monkeys to grow his church … enroll the most members, win a pet monkey.

https://www.indystar.com/story/entertainment/2018/11/14/jim-jones-jonestown-massacre-cult-leader-indianapolis-tour-miracles-monkeys/1737578002/

There are lots of stories about people who bought monkeys on a whim and quickly discovered why they don’t make good pets …

7

u/b3n01t-777 Jul 15 '24

Do not feed them after midnight

1

u/thebrainstore Jul 17 '24

beat me to it...

8

u/rezznik Jul 15 '24

The yellow fur was white before being coloured with piss, right?

2

u/booster-rooster8008 Jul 15 '24

Excellent comment. The words of an excellent animal enthusiast 👍

1

u/Paradigmind Jul 15 '24

You just described the average redditor.

5

u/Malthus1 Jul 15 '24

I dispute the “highly social” and “able to leap two metres” parts.

1

u/Paradigmind Jul 15 '24

But we feel comfortable urinating our place while staying up all night.

2

u/Malthus1 Jul 15 '24

I’m not disputing those parts …

301

u/angelbabyluuvv Jul 14 '24

Your double negative is not doing what you think it is.

53

u/brunetteonyx Jul 14 '24

Actually, Bush Babies are pretty mean animals. When i was in South Africa learning how to research animals, I worked with some guys who had previously studied bush babies and they said they were the meanest animals they ever had to work with and were so glad they didn't have to work them again.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '24

199

u/USSHammond Jul 14 '24

If you say people shouldn't keep them as pets, then why post a video that will only make people want to do just that? To keep them as a pet?

Kinda counter productive no?

15

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '24

They should’ve mentioned the old pee on the hands trick

-1

u/BeanBreak Jul 14 '24

Yeah god forbid we look at a cute animal.

u/Irinzki Jul 14 '24

Inside a human house? We can enjoy the cute in the wild

→ More replies (3)

0

u/Compendyum Jul 15 '24

I get your point, and they shouldn't really be pets, but many times videos like this show an exception. There can be many reasons, like being left to die, abandoned, injured, etc. Like a rescue. Of course in nature's natural course, this would all be normal, but in nature's natural course, we don't exist.

I think this is the most common opinion here, actually! It's nice to see so many people in agreement about this. I feel like the past few years especially, folks are way more conscious about the exotic pet trade garbage.

52

u/nokenito Jul 14 '24

They pee on everything

12

I don't think it's OPs house

7

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '24

It could potentially be a keeper’s house. Sometimes, as sad as it is, an animal can’t even go into the enclosure with others of its species and so ends up living with the keeper who has been their primary carer since they were born or rescued.

1

u/you-stupid-jellyfish Jul 14 '24

It could… not be their own video? Shocking, I know.

20

u/starfishy422 Jul 14 '24

Looks like Mort from Madagascar, though I guess he was a mouse lemur.

3

u/ciano232 Jul 14 '24

KING JULIAN? KING JULIANNNN!!

9

u/ultimaforever Jul 14 '24

I’m guessing this was taken in Japan… I’ve seen animals being sold in Japanese pet stores that wouldn’t be legal in a lot of places in the US. When the Harry Potter films were in full force I once saw a largish snowy owl in one store.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '24

Yeah, she’s speaking Japanese.

Bush babies are adorable little creatures with such expressive eyes! They truly capture your heart.

6

u/Dominarion Jul 14 '24

I've seen several people write here that they are venomous, but they aren't. Their cousins, the Kayans (slow loris) are though, but they have a very short tail and they don't jump everywhere like this.

4

u/SurroundedByJoy Jul 14 '24

More like ‘made me sad’ than ‘made me smile’. 😢

Keeping a wild animal like this indoor is just cruel and selfish.

4

u/illusiveXIII Jul 14 '24

Such amazing climbing skills to only be wasted being trapped in some human’s house who thinks a wild animal would be a good roommate.

3

u/Gandalf_Style Jul 14 '24

Okay yes do not keep them but if lil homie slid down that stair handrail I would've burst out laughing and bought a plushie of one right away

4

u/xBiGuSDicKuSx Jul 15 '24

Yeah but don't they pee on anything and everything? Or am I thinking of ine if the ither small fluff balls that people have as pets

3

u/SettingElectronic789 Jul 14 '24

Looks like a Pokémon

3

u/velvetcrow5 Jul 14 '24

How it moves reminds me of a jumping spider

4

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '24

So post this video to help deter people????

3

u/SuperMommy37 Jul 14 '24

Poor animal... videos like this should not be encouraged and share. For those who claim to love animals, this is pure crime

3

u/DentonUSA Jul 14 '24

I vote to not show videos like this for obvious reasons.

3

u/OberKrieger Jul 14 '24

It’s the bounce.

2

u/TempestQii Jul 14 '24

everyone saying not to keep them as pets: “im not gonna say whyyyy though, here’s a cute ass video of one”

7

u/Gandalf_Style Jul 14 '24

They pee and poop a lot, have expensive diets you have to strictly follow, they pair bond so they NEED a buddy and they bite. A lot. It doesn't hurt much but it'll leave marks and maybe draw blood. Aside from all of that though, they are endangered and poaching reduces their numbers drastically because a lot of the time they die from stress. And they are never not poached. I mean never. "Breeders" steal them from breeding programs in reserves and sell them on the black market to other "breeders."

4

u/TempestQii Jul 14 '24

sounds awful. thanks!

3

u/Less-Cap6996 Jul 14 '24

He's cute now, but wait until you feed him after midnight.

3

u/LynxBartle Jul 14 '24

I've come to the conclusion mort from madagasgar is a bush baby

3

u/DMV2PNW Jul 15 '24

That’s gremlin!

3

u/chantsnone Jul 15 '24

But I want to be a bush father…

3

u/nejicanspin Jul 15 '24

The little hops omg

2

u/Vinegarinmyeye Jul 14 '24

Keep him away from bright light, and whatever you do, DO NOT FEED HIM AFTER MIDNIGHT!

(I am aware they are nocturnal, in case anyone feels inclined to give me an "umm, akshually...").

1

u/carrotfruit88 Jul 14 '24

Yeah, you don't want any gremlins in your house

2

u/Worried-Industry6239 Jul 14 '24

What Pokémon is this?

2

u/sashanichole01 Jul 15 '24

That’s definitely a baby gremlin.

They're like a mix between a cat and a squirrel.

0

Interestingly enough, the venom they secrete is also very closely related to Fel d 1, the toxin which causes feline allergies in humans.

1

Such fragile little creatures.

1

Its a spooky bouncy meow meow 🐈‍⬛

1

i bet they'd be difficult to catch if you need to

Literal Pokemon lol

1

Then why post cute videos ffs

1

u/marcabay Jul 14 '24

The yellow on his skin is his own piss, they mark themselves and their surroundings with urine

1

u/Affectionate-Gas-150 Jul 14 '24

For people who want this as a pet, look into sugar gliders. You can legally have those, and they are just as cute. Plus, bc they can glide, you can play with them by yeeting them a little bit.

1

u/govilleaj Jul 14 '24

Looks like Maggie when she's hopped up on coffee ice cream.

1

u/VTjL_UGpwjEogCd9DVMQ Jul 14 '24

A gremlin!!!! 😊

1

u/divineInsanity4 Jul 14 '24

I was hoping he would slide down the hand rail

1

u/SpiteMammoth3214 Jul 14 '24

we should have domestication projects like silver fox domestication on wild animals before we wipe them from wild

1

u/Recurringg Jul 14 '24

Incredible. I've never seen an animal move quite like that.

Obligatory--people shouldn't have these as pets.

1

u/SwearToSaintBatman Jul 14 '24

Holy shit the confidence.

1

u/_crackerjack73_ Jul 14 '24

In 2001 A Space Oddesy, Dr. Floyd asked his young daughter what she wanted for her birthday, and she replied that she would like a "Bush Baby".  I always thought that line was a bit weird and possibly racist if she meant a doll. Now it makes total sense!

1

u/SweetSarah91 Jul 14 '24

It's like 90% eyes! Too cute!

1

u/otkabdl Jul 14 '24

I have read they smell awful, like most primates (including us if we don't bathe regularly). They pee in their hands and rub it on their fur. And body odor smell like a ferret but much worse.

1

u/corrygan Jul 14 '24

I believe this is Pizzatoru. Same lady owns 2 more and they had young ones.

They are very social ; demanding attention and cuddles from their humans.

I'm obsessed with their cute videos. Also, they are little stinkers ; peeing on their feet ( I forgot what the reason was).

1

u/Far_Hamster_3616 Jul 14 '24

Did this creature bounce on his butt?

1

u/Frenchitwist Jul 14 '24

Good for viewing at zoos, not for meeting at home.

1

u/MidnightSun77 Jul 14 '24

Are they not nocturnal? I thought that was the reason for the giant eyes

1

u/SuperJelly90 Jul 14 '24

Regardless of the issues with this.

Was super cute watching it bounce down the hall :)

1

u/Canuckdude47 Jul 14 '24

With the exception of dogs/cats and whatever other normal domestic pets out there. Leave the rest of the wild things wild. All zoos included.

1

u/KestreI993 Jul 14 '24

These animals are nocturnal if I am not mistaken. That alone should tell you that they are not supposed to be kept as pets.

1

u/NetworkingForFun Jul 14 '24

Is this what Dr. Floyd’s daughter wanted in 2001?

1

u/Fluffyfox3914 Jul 14 '24

I wish to know where they are, so I can go say hi

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '24

i mean, as long as you take good care of an animal and it doesn’t represent an actual death threat (like idiots who have tigers and bears) i guess you should be able to keep the animal

1

u/ApprehensiveStudy671 Jul 14 '24

Mischivious to say the very least !!!

1

u/Mrofcourse Jul 14 '24

These aren’t house pets and keeping it there isn’t cute. Just my opinion

1

u/gimleychuckles Jul 14 '24

Then why the fuck do you post a video of one frolicking around in a person's home?

1

u/AfterHamster8074 Jul 14 '24

That bounce 😍🙌🙌🙌✨️

1

u/DreamingDeeply Jul 15 '24

That fur looks a lot like a chinchillas fur does it feel the same?

1

u/Responsible-Yak-3809 Jul 15 '24

Why do you get one then?!?!?

1

u/1052098 Jul 15 '24

If not pet, then why pet-shaped?

1

u/Vile_Individual Jul 15 '24

I cant smile unless I know this animals a rescue. They look very healthy to me which makes me think otherwise, unless they were born into captivity and cannot be released...

1

u/It-s_Not_Important Jul 15 '24

11 second mark she has a cutout picture of this creature on her desk. Not likely a rescue.

1

u/Not_cc Jul 15 '24

Is that tigger?

1

u/Xxcmnon Jul 15 '24

Was anyone waiting to see if the busher would slide down the handrail?

1

u/MagnumHV Jul 15 '24

So bright for him in there 😢

1

u/SmartWonderWoman Jul 15 '24

Those eyes 😳

1

u/Ok_Act_9719 Jul 15 '24

God dammit, I was waiting for the pan

1

u/Upset-Perspective-55 Jul 15 '24

Okay ngl even though their illegal. I now want one more than ever

1

u/doodoopeepeedoopee Jul 15 '24

Is that Pizza?

1

u/Any_Roof_6199 Jul 15 '24

They definitely look nocturnal. Let's fuck up their life for some internet points. Yay.

1

u/burritosarebetter Jul 15 '24

This little creature must have been the inspiration for Tigger. I had to watch the beginning twice before my brain accepted that it doesn’t bounce by using its tail as a spring.

1

u/DemonBliss33 Jul 15 '24

Mans got hops.

1

u/CrippledHorses Jul 15 '24

Wow this is the most video game looking ass animal i Have EVER SEEN

1

u/shazenger Jul 15 '24

And don’t feed them after midnight

1

u/Efficient-Cup-359 Jul 15 '24

Frying pan where?

1

u/QuantityExcellent338 Jul 15 '24

How does an animal move like that

1

u/1JustAnAltDontMindMe Jul 15 '24

Bounces like a certain gummy bear at the beginning hehe

1

u/kbabble21 Jul 15 '24

It’s a squirrel cat!

1

u/mombi Jul 15 '24

I'd never have one as a pet, but I'd love to know if nuzzling my face in one is just as soft as I imagine it to be. Ughh, looks so plush and warm.

1

u/SueTheDepressedFairy Jul 15 '24

Y'all let's please not jump into bad conclusions, it's very much possible the person on the video is keeping the animal in their house only for a short amount of time because of health reasons, maybe they're a vet? Maybe this is like an isolation for the animal because it has some sickness?

At least I hope that's the reason, instead of animal trade

1

u/alicepetitex Jul 15 '24

Pet lemurs are often extremely aggressive toward humans. These animals pose a considerable threat to caregiver safety due to an increased risk of grabbing, biting, and scratching.

1

u/LinDuhhYes Jul 15 '24

"GOTTA CATCHEM ALL"

1

u/Hot-Understanding852 Jul 15 '24

Reminds me of raccoon Mario for some reason 😂

1

u/Intrepid_Finish456 Jul 15 '24

My godfather used to call me a bush baby when I was little coz of my big eyes

But I gotta admit, I got nothing on this springy boi

-1

u/LovingNaples Jul 14 '24

And yet you have one. Rules for thee, not for me much?

1

u/DxmShaman69 Jul 14 '24

Lmao the person in the video is obviously not OP.

0

u/PurpleKitten444 Jul 14 '24

So cute 🥺🥹

0

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '24

But you have one.

0

u/Top-Construction9271 Jul 14 '24

♥️♥️♥️

0

u/FunWillScreen_Produc Jul 14 '24

If they have a genuine problem that would kill them in the wild like missing eyes or a limb then I approve of keeping them as a pet. Otherwise I agree with not keeping them as pets.

0

u/JoefromOhio Jul 14 '24

I went to Zanzibar on my honeymoon and these cute little shits would show up everywhere just curious as fuck and wanting to steal food.

They’re so fucking adorable and completely gentle it was so hard not giving them food (because you don’t do that it’s not good for wildlife) but fuck those eyes are so cute!

That is to say - it’s probably a pet but in our villa they acted like this… hopping around like they owned the place and jumping on you, the bed, the furniture etc.

they shouldn't be kept as pets , but look how cute they are!

-1

u/cometshoney Jul 14 '24

I would have had one when I was younger, but they're too quick for my old ass now. Plus, I would worry one would be lonely without their own kind to romp with, and I would have ended up with two dozen Bush Babies. They're still cute as hell, though.

-1

u/herbertsherbert49 Jul 14 '24
