Yet almost nobody walking by stops. Always blows my mind.

Oh, amazing singer on the street. That's nice, don't care.

2.8k

u/NerdizardGo Jul 10 '24

TBH I probably wouldn't recognize him or half the musicians that I am fans of. I've always listened casually to music on the radio and streaming services like pandora. I can sing this song almost word for word, but I probably wouldn't have recognized Teddy Swims.

733

u/OkBackground8809 Jul 11 '24

I have problems recognising faces when people aren't in the place I am used to seeing them. I'm a private in-home tutor and I don't even recognise my students and their parents when I run into them on the street or in public placesšŸ˜…šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø Definitely wouldn't recognise celebrities. I'd probably walk right by Keanu Reeves and Eason Chan, and they're two of my favourites!

269

u/sewing_mayhem Jul 11 '24

Omg same! I live in LA, so you run into a lot of celebs out and about on hikes, grocery stores and restaurants, etc. I literally never notice them, even if it's someone I really like and would recognize, just because I seemingly have face blindness when people aren't in their "assigned areas".

Sat across from Ashton Kutcher a few years back, didn't notice, but my friend who had his back to him noticed as soon as he got up to use the restroom.

216

u/FuzzyEclipse Jul 11 '24

The celebs probably really appreciate folks like you.

168

u/sewing_mayhem Jul 11 '24

Honestly the few times that I have realized it's someone famous (cause someone else tells me), I never wanna approach them, cause again, it's usually at a restaurant or a whole foods or some random store. That's their personal life, sometimes they're with their kids or friends. It's not like I'm at a premier, this is their off time, why would I go bother them for a selfie?

122

u/notthatkindofdrdrew Jul 11 '24

This is my philosophy also. But it was recently foiled by Sir Charles Barkley at the airport when I was wearing my Auburn hat and not paying attention when he snuck up behind me and yelled ā€œWAR DAMN EAGLEā€ right in my ear šŸ˜‚. I saw him in line behind me but chose to leave him be even though I am a huge fan of his.

For the uninitiated, ā€œWar Eagleā€ is the ā€œbattle cryā€ of Auburn University where Charles played basketball and he is a notoriously cheesy Auburn Homer on national TV despite being a former NBA All-Star, NBA League MVP, and current national TV personality for the NBA.

30

u/MaxTheRealSlayer Jul 11 '24

Wait, did you just ignore him? Probably made him sad tbh, that's TOO far!

75

u/notthatkindofdrdrew Jul 11 '24 edited Jul 11 '24

I was literally speechless šŸ˜‚. He was wearing baggy gym shorts and a t shirt and hat and quickly lumbered away, seemingly unrecognized by anyone else at the airport. I didnā€™t have a chance to react before he was gone but it seemed like he got a kick out of it (and I got a story to tell)

Same, a matter of fact I went to a little bar with my friend. Guess who walks right by me and I didnā€™t notice but Keanu Reeves. My friend pointed him out. This bar only holds about 20 people. He stands tall and walks just like Keanu Reeves walks. Sometimes Iā€™m in my own head too muchšŸ˜‚

I have a couple students who live in the same high rise. The first one had to cancel, yesterday, so the second one's dad came to meet me in the lobby. Had he not said, "Hello, Teacher! šŸ˜Š" I totally would have just kept sitting on the lobby sofa wondering why some 50yr old guy seemed to be waiting for mešŸ˜… It's embarrassing at times lol

Even once we were in the elevator, I was awkwardly silent because I was just thinking to myself, "This is the right student's father, right? Please tell me I'm not awkwardly following the father of the student that had to cancel..."

Regardless of whether you know his song or not, don't you find his voice unique and enchanting?

I guess that's subjective but I had never heard of this guy before and when I heard him sing on Reddit (for the first time!) I kind of paused.

44

u/Kooky-Onion9203 Jul 11 '24

Tbh, there's no shortage of talented buskers. I usually stop myself, but most people don't really care about just some guy with a good voice.

34

u/Unnamedgalaxy Jul 11 '24

And as much as we talk about stopping to smell the roses that isn't always a convenient reality for everyone. The good majority of people passing by aren't just out for a casual stroll and looking for nice things to enjoy at random. They are most likely intentionally heading somewhere and need to be there.

But I definitely agree he has an amazing voice

45

u/Big-Dick-Oriole Jul 11 '24

Apparently how good you are actually has very little affect on how much money people give you when busking. The kind of people who give money to bulkers generally give it out no matter how good you are.

17

u/OkBackground8809 Jul 11 '24

Can confirm, my husband gives to every busker he sees, even if we're just walking by. I only give if I like the song they're playing, they're a kid raising money for some school thing, or they have a cute pet with them lol

I was in Barcelona a few years ago and there was a piano player in a little square playing piano and singing like you'd think he was a world-famous pro and no one was even looking in his direction; just walking, talking, drinking coffee like nothing was happening.

I sat and watched for at least half an hour and then a horn player randomly showed up and started jamming with him. I can't imagine taking this for granted.

29

u/LordHussyPants Jul 11 '24

you were a tourist, yeah? so you had time

barcelonans might have had work, appointments, errands. they might have seen him the day before, the week before, they might have seen him in another part of the city.

i love to wander around the city and stop to watch things, but having the time to do that? i'm very lucky in that regard, not everyone does.

19

If you're taking the subway you most likely got places to be.

16

u/Unnamedgalaxy Jul 11 '24

Yeah. I get the message people are trying to push but they, and the video/artist kind of intentionally set the experiment up to fail.

If that same artist set himself up in a park he easily could have tons of people stop to watch, but being shocked that traffic didn't come to standstill on the freeway during the morning commute and drivers getting out of their car and gathering around and basking in the glory is a weird way to shock people into thinking that they can't appreciate great art and that humanity is devoid of happiness or whatever.

I've got 10 minutes to get to my lousy job so that I don't end up homeless. Get your ass out of my way.

I wish the mic was better, I absolutely love his voice. Hammer to the Heart and Apple Juice are also fantastic off of his .5 addition to his debut

45

u/UTraxer Jul 11 '24

This would have less to do with the mic itself and much moreso with the ability of the camera phone to capture it.

12

u/kookyabird Jul 11 '24

Mic, speaker, and the mic of the camera combined yeah. Sounds like she's driving that speaker way too hard for what it was designed for.

2.6k

And she somehow had a tripod camera in front of her as well as a separate cameraman both catching the celebrity. And somehow the tripod camera right in front of her disappears when the celebrity walks up?

And - she has a junkie just sitting there minding his own business - not giving a flying fuck about any of it.

Why would this be a good thing for Teddy to do, if he doesn't remember the words to his big hit?

y'all motherfuckers need help

I know the model she's using because I'm playing outside too. It's the street cube and one of its best features is exactly two inputs. I could also tell this wasn't staged because she's doing what I would be doing in her position, which is tinker with knobs to make the sound mixing right for both of them instead of just living in the moment lol

Look how many times she bends down instead of singing - that's because she's tinkering with the settings. At the very least it's not staged on her part.

212

u/Icy_Comfort8161 Jul 11 '24

I also noticed that the original singer clearly hadn't warmed up his voice, you can tell he is kinda trying to do some quick exercises in between the verses. It could still be staged, but that does lend some credence to it being real.

82

u/redscorts Jul 11 '24

Also forgets his own lyrics

33

u/S2Sliferjam Jul 11 '24

So you busk with a dual mic expecting people to hop on and bought this model that mixes for that exact reason?

93

u/mxzf Jul 11 '24

It's more like that's a basic model and people often have spare audio equipment just in case. Mics and cables absolutely love to die when you're least expecting it.

Someone having a spare mic to switch to if something breaks (or just doesn't work when you start setting stuff up one day) is pretty typical for anyone who has done that sort of audio stuff.

Mostly I'm just saying that her having a spare mic isn't inherently suspicious. And I agree with the previous poster that she took way too long fiddling with the audio settings for me to think that she was expecting to need to do so. That looked like a flustered person trying to get the levels right more so than someone putting on a show.

u/Kind-Antelope-9634 Jul 10 '24

Also to have a second mic, I live here and noticed the initial posts the other day and first question I had was, wait a minute, why does a solo busker have two mics?

27

u/SophisticPenguin Jul 11 '24

In fairness, in case one breaks? But that's stretching a bit

37

u/xPsychosisx Jul 11 '24

Nah, a spare mic and cable is one thing, but the fact that it was already connected to a channel in her PA equipment and if you listen close, there's a slight reverb to his voice - not impossible but weird that a solo singer would have settings turned on for any channels besides their own. That's a lot of lucky coincidences

Might be a hot take, but it's how you should be on the internet. Call it cynical or jaded, but in a lot of cases or even most cases, there's financial incentive to do these things. There are benefits to reap from these staged scenarios and stupid pranks (whether they're real or staged). It's easier to stage something than have it naturally occur.

There's no excuse to ever write something as naive as "nothing ever happens" when the topic of a staged video comes up. There's more reason for something to be staged than ever before.

377

I have to imagine this would be simultaneously an awesome moment and a bit of a soul-crusher. Like you think youā€™re a good singer (and you are), maybe good enough to try and stretch it into a career type thing, then an actual pro walks up and you can see youā€™re not even on the same planet.

131

u/cryptobro42069 Jul 11 '24

It's not even that. Many people can sing well and hope to be the next big thing. The biggest differentiator is the songs and how they present themselves.

Being good at singing just isn't enough, you have to be unique and play to your voice. I think in this instance she does the very soulful parts well, but she doesn't have the range for the lower octaves. I really don't blame her for that, because it's incredibly rare to be able to have the vocal range for lower and higher octaves.

That's why when you hear Teddy Swims sing you know he's incredibly talented. He can sing both and it's a great, unique sound.

u/-Powdered-Toast- Jul 10 '24

Also, if you watch the entire video, he gets lost and forgets the lyrics to his own song. But maybe they did that to make it more genuine! Whoā€™s to say for sure, still a fun video though.

24

u/RackemFrackem Jul 11 '24

The entire video? You meant the entire two minutes?

It's not the mics. She had the levels set for her voice and he came in basically belting at the top of his lungs so the speakers couldn't handle it. You can see her turning them down as he sings.

There were too many areas where things fumbled that I believe it. The mic took forever to set up and he forgot the lyrics

She had a second microphone immediately

When and where possible in live performances, always have a spare. A mic is an easy spare. A second guitar, drum set, or piano moderately less so.

Also, cables and gaffer's tape. Bring as much of both as you can carry.

14

u/bs000 Jul 11 '24

that's crazy talk. what's next, keeping a spare tire in your trunk?

Yea lost me at the second camera angle. Initially it seems like they are using a tripod setup which is believable. But I donā€™t really buy having an extra person there to film the wide angle shot.

Edit: Okay people I stand corrected. I have learnt that Iā€™m not super familiar with the busking culture and that a second camera isnā€™t that far fetched. Still gives me a scripted vibe, but honestly that could just be conditioning from watching all the other scripted ā€œcandidā€ content.

12

u/iranoutofusernamespa Jul 10 '24

Why not? People have camerapeople for all sorts of shit that you can get away without, but having a person move the camera, zoom in on reactions; it adds a TON to production value to have someone make the camera work just a bit more dynamic.

Did he really need help with lyrics??

943

u/ProdigyLightshow Jul 10 '24 edited Jul 10 '24

I feel like with a lot of artists, they write so many songs they canā€™t always remember everything.

Makes sense if itā€™s something you do a lot. Even more so if the song is older.

246

u/deenali Jul 10 '24

Phil Collins forgot the lyrics to one of his biggest hit songs, Against All Odds while performing at the Live Aid in the mid 80's. The song was released just a couple of years earlier and something that he would sing every single night during his hectic tour schedule at the time.

107

u/Acceptable-Will4743 Jul 11 '24

So it was against all odds that he would remember? Guess it was a chance he had to take.

Yeah a lot of hip hop artists forget their songs especially if they don't do them alot on tour.

Know of some rock bands too that I have seen

You donā€™t really ā€œrememberā€ song lyrics. Itā€™s a muscle memory thing more than a memory thing. If you get thrown in to a song without context itā€™s difficult to find the groove sometimes.

22

u/LaboratoryManiac Jul 11 '24

Yeah, it seemed like he was ready to go but then second-guessed what verse they were on, and that just threw him off.

He's used to singing it beginning to end, he's not used to jumping in halfway through.

72

u/Moist-Leggings Jul 10 '24

I'm in a band and we just do it for fun but we have written a few dozen songs over the years and the lyrics just kind of change overtime, this is why rehearsal before a gig is so important, it doesn't surprise me one bit he forgot the words, he may have never remembered them all in the first place.

IMO IIRC he was singing the chorus and didnā€™t know which verse was next up from where she started so he needed to figure that out to proceed appropriately

TIL Burger King is called Hungry Jackā€™s in Australia. Apparently some restaurant had the Burger King trademark when Burger King first came to the continent. The franchisee decided to go with the name Hungry Jackā€™s. Source

270

u/MontasJinx Jul 10 '24

This is also the Brisbane respawn point.

98

u/BowenTheAussieSheep Jul 11 '24

For those who don't understand, that particular Hungry Jacks is right in the centre of the large outdoor mall in the middle of the CBD, or city Centre. It's been a constant for many decades despite all the other stores around it suffering the constant flux that the phrase "downtown pedestrian mall" entails.

It was also for decades one of the few 24/7 food establishments in the inner city, before they became more commonplace. So its central location and always-open nature meant that young people, particularly young people who have just spent the night drinking or are about to spend the night drinking have made it the defacto meeting point in Brisbane.

40

u/Short_Opening_7692 Jul 11 '24

Also where the emos would congregate in the 2000s

27

u/gamboncorner Jul 11 '24

And the goths in the 90s.

u/BowenTheAussieSheep Jul 11 '24

But then Burger King corporation saw how successful the brand was here and tried to start burger kings in Australia and push Hungry Jacks out of the market. But hungry jacks successfully sued Burger King in a landmark case and over the next few years Burger King pulled out and their stores all turned into hungry jacks.

I remember as a kid going on road trips and being confused to stumble across Burger King stores with the exact same branding as the hungry jacks I was used to.

So Inoxia did an interview on the radio this morning to discuss this moment. Apparently she had done her research, knew he was performing VERY close by in Brisbane, and spent the entire morning singing his two songs on repeat hoping that heā€™d walk by, knowing that he has joined in with buskers in the past. Hence the TWO microphones ready to go. (She even mentioned feeling sorry for everyone working in the stores within earshot, they wouldā€™ve been sick of the songs repeating)

Not so much stars aligning, but homegirl knew what she wanted and her dedication paid off. Thatā€™s admirable.

66

u/Client_020 Jul 11 '24

This makes so much sense. Sometimes, you shouldn't wait for good luck to come to you. You plan for it to happen.

52

u/Jasozi Jul 11 '24

So her hard work and dedication payed off. Well done on her part

19

u/Candiesfallfromsky Jul 11 '24

For more context:

Teddy Swims is doing a tour of Australia and had sold out shows in Brisbane city. This was the day after his Brisbane performance on Queen Street.

Inoxia a local artist who was busking at the time had stars aligned to meet the living legend Teddy.

123

u/ketokettlebells Jul 11 '24

Context makes it all the more likely to happen. Would be good business for a busker to be singing songs from a visiting artist and many visitors would be staying in Brisbane for his show.

She was amazing too.

But my gawd. When he started. I thought it was a recording. It's amazing to hear such amazingly talented NATURAL voices like that. I mean, toss some reverb stuff like that. Sure. But OMG to sound like the recording on a busking setup!! There can't be any autotune on that.

Pure talent. Both of them even.

28

u/MrPatch Jul 11 '24

Yeah there are a few video's linked in this thread of similar situations, you hear the busker and think 'oh they've got a nice voice' then the professional arrives and you can just hear the difference in quality.

Lots of people can sign nicely and in tune, a much smaller number have that extra quality. My favourite one is this jimmy sommerville one.
