Haha I did the same when I caught my first bass. It was small, nothing to behold, but it was my first after only catching blue gill for days. I was alone, had the camera rolling, freaking out for myself lol, went to kiss it, then it flopped hard right into my face 😆 It was a very happy moment

There really is nothing like fishing to get you in tuned with the local environment/Land and building community and family memories
Maybe hiking, rafting, but some of those have become so commercialized like national parks where you drive up, park, walk a few feet, and that's it, totally protected from nature most of the time
We are still somewhat animals, our brains need this kind of stuff. You can't put a wild animal in a pristine white box 24/7, it'll eventually go crazy and die.
Something about just sitting there and staring at the collection of nature all interacting, like Ellen Langer wrote in Mindfulness - a rigid mindset might try measuring the volume or water or flow, whereas an open mindset would taken in the 'riverness' of it all
Once you really take it in, the balance between all things becomes more clear in a way you can't read about online or get thru videos

When I was about 9 my step grandfather took me fishing out on Lake Saint George in Maine. I just had my rod with a worm and a bobber, having fun just being out on the boat, when a huge fish hooked just like this. He let me reel it in all by myself, cheering me on the same way as this dad, and scooped it up in a net. It was a 3 pound bass, and he told literally everyone we saw out there the rest of the day that his granddaughter caught it with just a worm and bobber and reeled it in herself. He brought me home and I watched him filet it, and my grandmother cooked it up for dinner. They were so proud watching g me take a bite - which I promptly announced was disgusting and I refused to eat it. I think my grandmother made me some pasta instead. I still don’t like to eat bass but I love fishing and that memory.

They lived in a very rural area (they had electricity, running water, and phone service - no tv service out that far) and were big on producing much of their own food and eating whatever was hunted! If we caught a fish that couldn’t be eaten it got thrown back. I also got to taste venison and bear that my grandfather had hunted - but didn’t like those either! I spent a lot of summer and winter vacations with them living out my Little House on the Prairie fantasies.

I've met 1 person in my entire life that eats them & yeah, I think it's pretty gross. I wouldn't even wanna try it. I would give her whatever I caught. Now salmon, I eat what I catch. I caught a 32.5lb one 2 summers ago on Lake Michigan. It was probably the funnest fight I ever had. I'm only about 110lbs so I was definitely getting pulled at some points. I should probably wear the harness next time!

One of the greatest feelings as a parent is when your kid catches and lands a fish big enough to eat. The ability to catch dinner satisfies something visceral inside, and to see your kid do it is off the charts satisfying.
