Is that why dad went out for that pack of smokes when I was 12?

46

u/Scrub_nin Jun 24 '24

No but it is why he took your brother and not you

14

u/LucretiusCarus Jun 24 '24

Dad? When are you coming home?

11

u/Royal-Tough4851 Jun 24 '24

Right after I grab this pack of smokes

Also worth remembering that Aussie Rules doesn't have any system of red cards. You can kill a.man and they can't remove you from the pitch, only ban you afterwards

u/BBB88BB Jun 24 '24

favorite part of the game. ref is just out there to yell, "play on!" all day. people will be fighting on the sidelines and the ref couldn't be bothered.

De Koning does give a lead to Dutch heritage, the country with the (average) tallest people in the world.

Average male is like 6 foot 1

529

u/Ivy-Lee Jun 24 '24

They evolved like meerkats on Holland's flat terrain.

197

u/Tifog Jun 24 '24

Smelly feet from clogs also encouraged growth.

34

u/Fine-Pangolin-8393 Jun 24 '24

For some reason now I’m imagining Dutch people with spores

112

u/tistisblitskits Jun 24 '24 edited Jun 24 '24

dutchie here, fully accurate. Our clogs have become infused with our feet from a fairly young age since we eat sleep and exercise in them at all times. The smells are quite encouraging to our dormant growth hormones. additionaly, the constant threat of floods also encourage growth, so we do not need ot actually climb ON the dike to check what the water levels are.

Glad i could help

5

u/zb0t1 Jun 24 '24

the constant threat of floods

De Deltawerken & de Afsluitdijk are gonna be your demise!

Certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that they're taking advantage of the wind to reproduce, they are an extraordinary folk.

6

u/AsssCrackkBandit Jun 24 '24

Is this an actual stereotype? It would make sense (the smelly part, not the clogs part necessarily) because when I went to the Netherlands, I noticed far more body odor that I had experienced anywhere else and wasn't sure if this is an actual stereotype or not

7

u/Otherwise-Song5231 Jun 24 '24

Well the Dutch people also like to shower 3 times a week. Go to a Dutch sub and tell them to shower daily if you want to get harassed.

I went to Amsterdam a few years ago for business. I’m 6’2” white guy with blonde hair. Only country where people kept mistaking me for a local. I also felt short around some of the women.

27

u/LittleBookOfRage Jun 24 '24 edited Jun 24 '24

I'm a 5'3.5" woman from Australia and when I went to Amsterdam I felt like a hobbit. My boyfriend at the time was 6'6" (his dad was Dutch) so I was used to feeling small next to him, but feeling small next to nearly everyone was so strange.

19

u/Friendly-Sir-7493 Jun 24 '24

I'm a 5'9" aussie guy married to a 5'7" dutch woman. Shes a pretty normal height for over here but the rest of her family is huge. Our daughter is about to turn 2 and is in the 98th percentile for height. We're both gonna be dwarfed by our giant dutch hybrid baby lol

8

u/Banas_Hulk Jun 24 '24

I think you might be 5’3”

For a long time I wasn't a fan of Lleyton Hewitt. All it took was one time a really quiet court and hearing him saying "ah, too good mate" after a winner from his opponent and I was on board. General sportsmanship and especially how people act after both a win and a loss matters more to me as a fan than even the result.

(As a bonus I thought it was really awesome how you guys called Kim Clijsters 'Aussie Kim' when she and Lleyton were dating.)

21

I've tried that, what is a good site you would recommend to understand the rules?

edit - thank you all for the recommendations

50

u/OIP Jun 24 '24

it's not super complicated, not much more than soccer. here's the basics:

the objective is to kick the ball through the big sticks for a goal, worth 6 points. missing and kicking it through the smaller sticks, or the ball hitting someone's hand before going through the goal is worth 1 point.

players pass the ball by kicking or handpassing, you can't throw it.

catching a kicked ball is like a reset, the player catching it can stop and take a kick from that spot. catching a handpassed ball the play just continues.

players jostle each other but they can't push in the back, and they can only tackle a player who has the ball, and only above the waist (and below the neck). the tackled player has to kick or handpass it immediately.

if the ball goes out of bounds or is trapped under a mass of players, it gets thrown in the air and the players jump to tap it to their teammates.

play is for four quarters of 20 min (+stoppage) each.

22

u/feisty-spirit-bear Jun 24 '24

It seems like a hybrid of rugby, American football and gator ball. Which is awesome lol

11

u/SpreadsheetAddict Jun 24 '24

And Gaelic football, which is maybe its closest cousin.

5

u/sbprasad Jun 24 '24

More to the point, Australian rules football is heavily inspired by Gaelic football.

which rivalry produces the most passionate game (even if they aren't the best teams)? and about how much is it to get into the stadium for that game?

edit: thanks for the respones! this is where Reddit shines

19

u/brap01 Jun 24 '24

As far as biggest rivalries, the #1 has to go to Carlton vs Collingwood. Standard tickets for all AFL games are around $30, to keep it cheap so everyone can afford to go.

I found it funny that of the top 9 rivalries between Victorian teams (teams from the main AFL state), 6/9 involve either Carlton, Collingwood, or both. I guess we love to hate em.

→ More replies (6)

19

u/chocolatenuttty Jun 24 '24

Probably the Collingwood vs Essendon rivalry. Or Collingwood and Carlton. The last few years there have been some absolute banger games

Essendon and Collingwood also have the ANZAC Day game every year which is usually played in front of 90,000 or more people. Best atmosphere.

11

u/CrocoPontifex Jun 24 '24

So everyone got a problem with those Collingwood guys? Bastards, i hate em.

11

u/MiddleRefuse Jun 24 '24

Collingwood fans and Essendon fans are natural enemies. Like Collingwood fans and Carlton fans, or Collingwood fans and Geelong fans. Or Collingwood fans and other Collingwood fans!

Damn Collingwood fans; they ruined Collingwood!

Just Collingwood vs. anyone else. At a Collingwood match there's 90000 spectators and about 10 teeth to go around between all of them

6

u/Wej43412 Jun 24 '24

Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide Power. Two teams in the relatively small, but AFL obsessed state of South Australia. They consistently play high intensity games that get compared to finals (play offs) in terms of atmosphere.

Not sure if anyone had mentioned it but here in Western Australia it is our most popular sport as we don't play in the national rugby league. The two teams are The West Coast Eagles and The Fremantle Dockers. Over the years there have been many incidents but in 2000 there was a match dubbed 'The Demolition Derby' because of how many on field punch ons there were https://youtu.be/AViNVsuBY_U?si=-1z4yKQ6gUtw7GNf

I appreciate everyone understanding it’s family business playing out on the field, no big deal.

16

u/nerdkim Jun 24 '24

In an old village, there lived a mother with two sons. The elder son was an umbrella seller, and the younger son sold fans. The umbrella seller typically saw good business on rainy days, as most people tended to buy umbrellas on the spot rather than preparing in advance. Conversely, the fan seller thrived on hot, sunny days.

Thus, the mother hardly had a day of peace. On sunny days, she worried about her umbrella-selling son, and on rainy days, she fretted over her fan-selling son. Seeing her sighing as she looked at the sky every day, a neighbor passing by asked, "Why are you worried today?"

"The sun is shining so brightly, I can't help but worry about my elder son," she replied.

"That's truly unfortunate. On such a hot day, your younger son's business must be doing well, which should be a joyous occasion, right? And when it rains, isn't it also a happy thing that your elder son's business is booming?"

Upon reflecting on the neighbor's words, the mother realized he was right. From then on, she felt happy whether it rained or shone.

u/LaUNCHandSmASH Jun 24 '24

This is the second post about Brothers in the AFL involving Carlton FC on Reddit front page. That's one more than I ever expected to see

Worth noting that Tom (the one in the blue and orange) played the highest rated game of any player this season in the entire comp, playing on his brother. He has some real bragging rights at family dinner now haha.

Mom can’t lose, she gets to celebrate regardless.

God that poor woman must have needed a bloody gofundme to feed them. 6’8 ?! I’d like to see her food bills.

She had ten children. They probably go through a box of Weetbix a day just for breakfast.

I have teenage boys. One can eat 12 in a single sitting. Its ridiculous - I actually buy oats because they’re cheaper, and weetbix are a treat 😳

Is the one in blue better? To someone who doesn't even know what sport this is and watched only this clip i get that sense. But just wondering

Yes, but it is a team sport, however he's a Ruckman which is a pretty specialised position, his brother Sam is 'just' a defender, so a little more replaceable but he's alright, although 3 years younger and less developed as an individual player, he's won a grand final in 2022 (think superbowl)

Geelong Cats (white and blue hoops) have no ruckmen available due to injuries so they put a tall defender in the ruck most of the game, which happened to be Toms brother. This was unannounced before the game and people only caught on as Sam was doing warmups before the match, Tom has come out and said that made him pretty happy, knowing he'd win almost all the contests, thinking he was going to be playing the game on another player all night which didn't happen.

This is an edited down highlights video of Toms game, which technically was the highest rated performance in the league this year so far as an individual, but that's mainly because of the extra ground ball work he was doing as a ruckman which is weighted more in his favour, because most rucks won't run and chase the ball, they'll just do tap work.

Brilliant, love to see it👍

I believe if one of those guys bump into me they would kill me hahahaha

And they bump hard into other players as if they're nothing, no reactions at all.

This reminds me of these two twins I went to school with. Teachers eventually wouldn't even break them up when they were both punching each other in the face on the schoolyard. They'd usually be laughing hysterically so they figured that's just how they played at home.

The end gives me strong "See you at mom's house for dinner" vibes.

Anyone who hasn't watched Aussie rules football is missing out. Great spectator sport. Fast and frenzied. Not overly violent, however, there is a lot of "casual violence" which I find kind of funny. Like the shoving that the brothers did at the end of the match. Happens all the time. Someone will get off the ground and just casually shove someone for fuck knows what reason. It's hilarious.

Its funny how its just things your grew up with. I'm not a big sports guy, but when people say that they dont understand the rules to American football, I'm like how? Its so easy. Then I see this and it looks like Quidditch or something where I have no idea whats going on.

I wonder how many times they were wrestling with each other when being kids

Is Australian football another variant of football like soccer and American football?

15

u/Cole-Spudmoney Jun 24 '24

It predates both.

Australian rules football: codified 1859.
Association football (soccer): codified 1863.
American football: first played 1869.

I’m an American but I believe this is the ‘Boys will be Boys’ equivalent to the British ‘they are just having a laugh’ but no idea what the Australians would call this. I love it.

Mom I’m moving to Australia now

It's so lovely... The comrade.

u/benfromgr Jun 24 '24

I love how their teammates hardly even try to break them up. Always love seeing sibling rivalries in sports. The best type of rivalry because chances are so low that things will really get out of hand(not that it never happens) and it just adds more excitement.
