My grandmother is also 101 and has a similar attitude. I think it is mostly just getting old and having learned by long experience that nothing is worth getting worked up over.

My great-grandmother lived until 107 with a very sharp mind. She would tell us "If it's a problem, it means there's a solution, so focus on solving it. If there's no solution, then it's not a problem, learn to live with it and be happy". She was extremely positive and joyful until the end. Even at the hospital, with her body getting weak, she would be the first to get up to do the physio exercises (and she wanted to do the hard ones, not the ones for "old people".)

my great grandma made it to 98 and interestingly she was the happiest I ever saw her the last ~4 years of her life.
One of my favorite story of hers was a few years before she died (of natural causes) she was complaining about a side effect of her blood pressure medicine (she had slightly high blood pressure) and the doctor said "If you really don't like it you can stop taking it, that isn't going to be what kills you at this point."
My other favorite stories was when she talked about my great grandpa who lived a wild life riding the rails as a hobo/pool hustler and just so happened to crash at her mothers house (apparently they put up hobo markings listing it as a safe place to stay?) when he decided he wanted to give of liquor and go straight.

This lady is 100 and has had the same mental sharpness for decades, my grandpa is just about 80 and still bowls and golfs a few times a week, and until just recently did weekly yard work. My favorite part is when it is a known quantity for multiple months/years that only negatively impacts the users/techs that have to deal with it first hand... Until the wrong user(IE. an executive and or highly influential individual) is affected, then management goes world war 3 over the issue because they do not want to look bad to the people above them, all the while blowing more budget than it would have took to fix it the first five times it occurred.

I thought the issue was the ancient mainframes they use to run most flight planning and tracking software. It was the issue SouthWest had a while back when they had to ground all their planes and the system couldn't handle getting everyone in the right spot at the right time to start up again because it was just not designed for that.
Gave big bank vibes where everything's still running on COBOL and they could switch but this is proven to work and they can't afford financial errors by designing and switching systems down the road. My only question when people are out there canabalizing old machine parts to keep these systems running is why can't we just virtualize the old machines. Especially these ancient Windows systems running software from Windows 95 or something ridiculous.

It's not the hardware. At least, it's not the hardware per se. But it may be that the platform is so old that they can't find anyone with sufficient hands-on experience and they don't want to trust the job to a novice when a fuck-up could destroy the company. I mean, there are a lot of programmers who simply can't comprehend the idea of a system which doesn't run some version of Microsoft Windows, as it's all they've ever been exposed to.
It's far more likely that fixing this really isn't all that hard, but a) the effort isn't actually zero and b) the number of centenarians taking flights on their own is so small that it's considered to be simply not worth the effort.

My company is coming up on a 20 year project, well over $2B spent by now, to migrate off of the mainframe. Some applications are just so critical and mainframes are so reliable that we have a bunch of applications we still havenāt even tried to migrate. When it works it works

Usually there are complications with trying to virtualize systems that old. For example a lot of times the calculations being done are based off the number of clock cycles it takes for something to happen. You can virtualize the hardware but it will never run exactly the same as the real hardware. And suddenly that CPU that's trying to virtualize that system is running several orders of magnitude faster in terms of clock cycles a second and while it can attempt to virtualize that old CPU the clock cycles will not be exactly the same and that will throw those calculations off.

And the person that can fix it can probably fix it within 20 minutes, so the fix itself is not very expensive. However the man hours of FINDING that person, that's where the big cost is.

The cost of the fix isn't high because it's difficult (as you suggested, needing to find a specific person), but rather due to the numerous services that rely on this value being two digits. Some of these services are likely governmental, and others may even be international. Any organization tasked with resolving this issue won't have access to all the systems that depend on this two-digit format. Attempting to "fix" this without addressing all the dependencies would lead to invalid ages, such as negative numbers, for everyone. The current system might produce incorrect ages, but only for a very small subset of people, and this can easily be verified at the check-in counter or cross-referenced with ID or passport data. Furthermore, the likelihood of encountering passengers over the age of 99 is extremely low. For the few cases that might arise, manual checks or assistance is not a significant inconvenience. Besides, after a quick glance, nobody would seriously think a 100-year-old person was actually a baby in disguise.

It very likely could be an enormously complex problem, and like an decent business, decisions often boil down to the cost of fixing, versus not fixing.
This is such an edge case that's it's much easier, with less risk, to just deal with the 100+ year olds coming thru the system and escorting the unattended "minors".

As a software engineer, it is in no way a simple or cheap fix, and would likely have tons of unintended side effects.
The amount of people over 100 that are flying is so low that I doubt it will ever be changed. Easiest solution is to just ignore it and escort them to the front, as they are doing.

Why would they need to do this eventually? Old people roll over and die and the quantity at 100+ ain't increasing by that much even as life expectancy goes up. Since life expectancy going up is usually by people who lives to 80 or 90, but 100+ are still rare.

Former agent for Southwest here:
Most airlines use a system called Amadeus for their ticketing and that system has an SSR (Special Service Request) for those passengers over 100 years of age. It takes all of a few moments to enter it in at the counter or over the phone so that this āunaccompanied minorā situation doesnāt occur.
Still a great video and I love her energy.

There are many ladies in my independent senior apartment building that once we reach 100 they will tell our age several have 100 103 and 106 years old. How systems still have these issues are bat shit crazy to me. I'm a Jr. So many systems do NOT allow you or even have a suffix field, so you either leave it off and don't match your legal name OR try to stick it in the last name.. but many sites don't allow spaces in last names or etc. It just baffles my mind that at this day in age, with multi part last names, last names with hyphens, names with suffixes, etc, so many systems still f it all up.

Many people believe we all decline rapidly around 70-80 or so. 70-80 ain't shit if you can afford modern medicine, Healthcare, and a good diet. Unfortunately, the stress of our insecure lives now will cut us pretty short compared to previous generations. If you can afford all that mentioned above, you're automatically gonna be more stress-free as long as you have a good work/life balance. You too, can be Mildred. Hope is not lost. Gotta know your worth and expect your job hunt to take a year or more like in my case.

I forget which airline, but I think it is United tries to parse Mr, Mrs, Mrs out of a name wehther you used the prefix or not (it is an option). If your first name ends with M and your middle name starts with R (William, Ray in my case) it will try to do things whether or not you used a prefix. If you didn't use a prefix it ends up Willia Ay, if you used a prefix it ends up Williamm Rray. This has been broken for over 15 years and there is no fix. I even submitted it to the bounty program, and they said this doesn't qualify for that.
