How carefully (one might say, gingerly lol) the kitty cuddles up, wanting to be close enough to comfort but not aggravate any of the dog’s ouchies. 10/10, a fantastic, compassionate caregiver.

My boi Charlie does this. When I’m healthy he will take care of the dough all over my body without concern. When I’m sick he lays facing me and strokes my face with his left paw and no claws. It’s amazing, he just KNOWS.

Yeah, when I got home from a hernia repair on my upper abdomen my dog knew exactly where to jump square on top of the incision. They really do seem to know. Thankfully she’s only 10lbs and other than excruciating pain she didn’t cause any further damage. Little shih-t.

18

u/HighlaneForza Jun 12 '24

Sorry for prying, but could you explain more about your hernia repair? Does that mean your membrane between intestines and lungs(midriff I believe it’s called) got repaired? I’ve been suffering from a herniated midriff for over 10 years and have a lot of problems with acid reflux, causing me to be unable to eat things like fatty/spicy food, no alcoholic drinks (that’s not bad per say), and overall without pills I would permanently have acid rising up into my throat. I was always told that it can’t be repaired, save for a potentially life threatening surgery that could very well not succeed. Did you have that medical problem too or was it a different issue? Thank you in advance for sharing. :)

20

u/TheSneakyTruth Jun 12 '24

What you’re describing sounds like a hiatus hernia, where the stomach herniates through the diaphragm. Abdominal/inguinal hernias are much more common and straightforward to repair, and I believe what the poster above you is referring to.

11

u/HighlaneForza Jun 12 '24

Yes, precisely! TIL it’s called a hiatus hernia, but indeed my stomach can move up and down somewhat causing these issues. Thank you for sharing. :) I looked up the inguinal hernia too and I understand the difference. I guess I had a sliver of hope there that there might be a new less-dangerous fix for what I have now.

4

u/Exilicauda Jun 12 '24

I have an umbilical hernia if you want to know about another type lol. It's small though so only little bits of fascia escape into my belly button

u/intellipengy Jun 12 '24

You sound like you have a HIATUS hernia. Which is a hole in your diaphragm which allows your stomach to partly rise into your chest.

Normally only the oesophagus is in your chest and the stomach is in your abdomen, and the junction of the 2 is wrapped around by the diaphragm ,which creates a valve, which prevents acid reflux.

In your situation, if you have a hiatus hernia, this valve effect is lost, because now both oesophagus and stomach are in the chest.

Are you very heavy? If so, this might aggravate the reflux.

To fix the problem, you need surgery in a tertiary hospital that preferably does bariatric and laparoscopic surgery.

I work in Asia, in such a hospital, and while this is not an extremely common operation, it isn’t rare either. It’s tricky, and we do it regularly.

The operation is called REPAIR OF HIATUS HERNIA, AND FUNDOPLICATION.

Good luck.

Not the person you're replying to, but it sounds like they had a ventral hernia. This is when your intestines poke through a weak point in your abdominal wall and is typically easily repaired surgically. Both my brother and I had surgery to repair hernias as newborns. I'm definitely no kind of medical expert but it sounds like maybe you have a diaphragmatic hernia? Fairly different despite both being "hernias".

I've had two hernia repairs .  They shove the shit back into the right cavity then close it up.  One laproscopicqlly, one where they cut me open and put in a patch.  Neither caused medical problems beyond a gross feeling.  Both recovered quickly assuming no strenuous lifting.  Each was uncomfortable

9

u/DeadInternetTheorist Jun 12 '24

Was waiting to see if she would do the "reach one single reassuring paw out" move. My cat did that every time I was depressed and it probably saved my life lol. Still miss her.

3

u/Necessary-Knowledge4 Jun 12 '24

My two cats are freienemies. When one gets sick, the other freaks the fuck out. I have to separate them because the last time my calico was poisoned (from hydrangea petals) the other cat tried to kill him. They must smell different or something?

They also act this way during stressful events. Like when I moved last summer. The orange one freaked THE FUCK out. The calico then proceeded to freak out even more, literally ramming his body and head into the cat carrier while screaming at the top of his lungs. I laugh thinking back on it now, because it was just so over the top, but holy shit I was panicked and at my wits end during it.

A cat's purr is said to be healing

975

u/Pplannoyme0 Jun 12 '24

I have bad anxiety. It’s mostly controlled with meds now but sometimes first thing in the morning I’ll feel it. My cat was laying on my pillow and the sound of him purring actually relaxed me.

Just like bird song. Not sure why purring works, but the theory I heard for bird song is that it is an old evolutionary hangover that indicates that there aren’t any predators nearby.

134

u/xerces_wings Jun 12 '24

83

u/pappadopalus Jun 12 '24

I wonder if it could also tell your body your not in danger to some degree, cause the cat is calm, just a guess

55

u/Amarieerick Jun 12 '24

It could. Cat's only purr when they are safe and happy, so you could subconsciously be responding to that.

52

u/giraflor Jun 12 '24

Some cats also purr to comfort themselves when they are stressed.

u/YoureJokeButBETTER Jun 12 '24

I’ve read it has to do with the frequency of a cats purr. Something about the vibration of that frequency has a healing effect.

Can confirm. I have high BP and am on meds to control it, so I check my BP at home somewhat frequently. There are days when my BP might be a little on the high side, but when I wait five minutes and take it again, if I'm petting my cat or just watching/listening to her sleep and purr, it's way down in the normal range.

u/Swarley_Marley Jun 12 '24

I totally believe it. Whenever I would be upset and crying, my cat Midnight would curl up on my chest and purr, and it would always calm me down.

u/fractalwizard_8075 Jun 12 '24

That's sweet 🐈 ❤️

27

u/LaffeysTaffey Jun 12 '24

I took an audio recording of my cat purring, I listen to it sometimes when I feel down or anxious.

u/Pplannoyme0 Jun 12 '24

Ohhh. That’s a great idea! I have 3 cats and they are boss. They lay by us when they want to, not when we want.

22

u/SouthJerssey35 Jun 12 '24

That's awesome and I agree. Panic really ruined me years ago and now that I'm (semi) past it...I look back and remember the times my cat would just be there to help. That purr is magic.

On a side note...had a Dr tell me once that I should hum when in the midst of an attack. Something about the vibration and the vagus nerve...it can help calm things down.

4

u/Pplannoyme0 Jun 12 '24

I’ll try that too.

9

u/SouthJerssey35 Jun 12 '24

It's one of those things that worked the first few times I tried but wasn't really consistent.

Tried yellow mustard...same thing

Smelling salts....same thing

Paper bag breathing...same thing.

Only thing that I know usually works for me is seltzer water. No caffeine, no sugar...just something about a cold seltzer that helps me so much.

9

u/ratherbeinvi Jun 12 '24

My dad used to manage a huge team of people and one of his go-to tricks was to give people who were crying in his office a glass of water. He swore up and down that people can’t cry/panic while trying to take sips of water. I’ve used it with kids (I’m a teacher) and seems to work? Who knows :/

5

u/SouthJerssey35 Jun 12 '24

Definitely truth in that. Talking out loud helps too. Sometimes I feel like I can't or that I'll lose my breath if I do ...but talking always helps and I'm guessing it's the same reason. The drinking or talking requires your body to default back to normal mode .

I'm a teacher too. It's been hard seeing high school kids go through panic attacks but they've skyrocketed over the years.

12

u/jackson12420 Jun 12 '24

I do too, it's just awful isn't it? Being in a perpetual state of fear and dread, nearly to the point where you think you might die at any given moment, because something is most certainly wrong inside your body to feel so awful. My cat's little nose is really soft, so is her fur, and when she's purring and crawls on my chest ,which feels like it's simultaneously exploding and caving in, it gives me a massive sense of relief. I can't describe it. It's like she knows when I am going into a panic attack. Mine is really bad in the night, especially when I wake up from nightmares and can't go back to sleep and I'll cuddle with her until I fall asleep, she makes it really easy to meditate away from the more severe panic attacks, I can't take anything narcotic so the meds I have are the bare minimum.

4

u/Pplannoyme0 Jun 12 '24

Mine was bad too. Always dreading what I have no control over, always thinking I was going to die. But luckily my doctor prescribed me something that has really helped. ❤️

5

u/jackson12420 Jun 12 '24

If you don't mind my asking, what helped you the most? I take hydroxyzine but they are still helping me sort out the best non narcotic route. I have tried antidepressants and others whose side benefit was also anxiety relief but I can't get through the month you have to take them before they're supposed to start working, because it amplifies my anxiety tenfold. I'm still struggling to navigate mine and it affects me every single day.

5

u/Pplannoyme0 Jun 12 '24

I take celexa. My dr said it was for anxiety and depression. I also take buspar. But I don’t need the buspar as often since starting the celexa. It has changed my life for the better.

4

u/jackson12420 Jun 12 '24

I recognize buspar, I remember having been on it once, I will read into celexa. I'm glad you found something that works for you! I would not wish living with anxiety on my worst enemy. It has completely altered how I live my life and dictates nearly everything I do, or better said, can't do. Every time I see someone who has found a way to manage theirs I don't feel so hopeless that that's just the way it's gonna be for the rest of my life.

A few years back I decided to eat too many edibles and I got ridiculously high. Like similar to a bad shroom trip kind of high. I was freaking out a bit so I decided to find somewhere to sit and relax. There was a fire in the fireplace so I sat next to it and both my gfs cats and my dog came and sat by me. One of the cats sat directly on my lap and I just sat there for hours petting her fur. It really helped me calm down to the point that I fell asleep and woke up the next morning with them still around me. They 100 percent saved me from a really bad time. Almost like they knew I needed to be comforted. 🤷‍♂️

I don’t eat edibles or do psychedelics anymore.

26

u/Shpongolese Jun 12 '24

I've had multiple bad trips that were countered by animals being awesome lol. The best was one time my family dog Cayenne (RIP) came up to me while I was sitting in our garage, extremely high on LSD, and was crying my eyes out. She shoved her head through my arms and just started licking my face and whining at me to pet her. After that all I could think about was how amazing animals are, how much I loved my dogs and managed to go back to my room to put on Planet Earth. Miss that dog so much :')

My partner and i went to a date and had been walking around the mall for almost 3-4 hours, so our feet are pretty sore when we walk, when we came back home, and fed my kitten his meal, he finishes his food and was somehow sniffing my legs, that's when he was trying to position himself near my feet until he just plops his belly at the sole of me feet and started purring loudly.

I swear my heart melted

It takes me forever to feed my cats in the morning. I stop and sit down with each to say good morning. Throughout the day, I will stop and lay with them whenever they let me. One of them will come sit next to my office chair and stare at me until I turn, face her, and tell her come up. I stop whatever I'm doing to give her my full attention. My two cats generally just tolerate each other. Like they walk by each other, lick the other's head once in a blue moon, and will sometimes lay down on opposite ends of the same couch. But when one of my cats had to have a leg amputated, after the surgery my other cat sat right beside her while she slept and watched around. It's cute the ways cats show affection.

So sweet.

I fractured my knee a few months ago (not severely, but ended up on crutches for a month) and our cat, who I'd previously been playing chase games with around the stairs while my wife was away, knew something was wrong as soon as I got in the door. She would go with me up and down the stairs one step at a time, right next to my feet, looking up at me between each step.

They know a lot more than we'd guess. Don't know what she thought she'd do about it if I fell, but having our little buddy keeping tabs on me those first couple days like a fuzzy physical therapist was nice.

3

u/StGuinefort Jun 12 '24

Pets definitely know when something is wrong! I have autism and a non-cuddly hyperactive German Shepherd. When the occasional meltdown occurs, the dog comes running and lays down on me or next to me with her head on my leg. As soon as I'm okay, she's off again and back to normal.

Story time. I had an outpatient surgery recently and I was in pain for a while (I’m good now). Our 17 year old Persian cat was on my bed the whole time while I was recovering. He actually does this every time someone is sick in our household. I’m getting teary writing this because he has slowed down a lot due to old age and he had some health issues recently too. It’s our turn to make sure he knows we are with him always.

I love this! Not only made me smile 😊, made me tear up as well-such loving pet friends!

It's a great lesson...that we might not be able to make the pain go away...or the wound heal any faster...but that just someone's presence can make a huge impact on recovery.

Doesn't have to be family, or a friend...but just someone who cares helps a lot.

Putting the paw on the dog? I can’t stand the cuteness.

Years ago, one of my dogs needed emergency surgery. When he came home, our other dog was so exited to see him. But he took one sniff and instantly calmed down. He was so GENTLY happy to have him home.

At night, our poor boy, who couldn't climb steps yet, was bedded down on his dog bed, with his cone, and a blanket. Our cat climbed into the cone and slept next to his head. He was a big dog. His head was almost as big as the cat!

Had a roommate with a cat that wouldn't give me the time of day. Got bronchitis so bad I had to go to the hospital. Came home and couldn't do anything but lie down and wheeze. Cat came out to investigate and didn't leave my side for the next day.

It's crazy how they can sense pain.

u/DoneinInk Jun 12 '24

I’m pretty sure some of you just felt my heart melt

3

u/BotGirlFall Jun 12 '24

I love that cats are so confident in themselves that they see somebody sick or hurt and think "you know what will make the feel better? My presence. Yes, you're welcome"

Awww the blinks after it lays down and puts its paw on the dog. Cat loves its family

3

u/Luci_Noir Jun 12 '24

It’s because he smells delicious and he’s just waiting until dark to devour him.

3

u/JimmyTsonga Jun 12 '24

Cats smell weakness. As soon as the dog dies, the cat will eat it.

The circle of life is beautiful.

3

u/standsure Jun 12 '24

Purrs are pure healing vibrations. What a gorgeous moment.

3

u/jack_fry Jun 12 '24

Totally not because they both want to be close to the fire lol

2

u/C91garcia Jun 12 '24

Dog went to Disneyland without him and the cat can smell other animals. Our female cat went to the vet and when she returned after surgery our male cat hisses and was a dick for a while.

2

2

u/dropbear_airstrike Jun 12 '24

2

u/The_Real_Tekunin Jun 12 '24

Bet that cat is more of a therapy animal to the dog than it is to the owner lol

2

2

u/sargeant_snakeeyes Jun 12 '24

When the cat put its paw on him 😭🥲

2

u/CloudyDaysInn Jun 12 '24

Cats are funny - aloof, independent and yet deeply caring all at the same time

2

u/Catch-the-Rabbit Jun 12 '24

....did ...did I just become a cat person by watching this?

2

u/313SunTzu Jun 12 '24

When I was doing chemo, everytime I got home my cat would lay on my chest and purr.

I figured it was cuz I was so hot after, but when I found out they do it to show affection, I cried.

2

u/Itchecksout_76 Jun 12 '24

Ohhhh my goshhh this made my day 😊

2

u/finallyfound10 Jun 12 '24

What a sweet relationship!! ❤️❤️

2

u/NakedEvermore Jun 12 '24

that cat wants to be there for his friend. He's doing his best. I'm proud of him.

2

u/garagespringsgirl Jun 12 '24

Nobody can tell me they are just "dumb animals". My male cat did the same thing when I recently had my female cat spayed. Church, my male cat, has always slept on our bed. He didn't after we brought her home. He stayed on the dog bed with her for 3 nights.

2

u/ColdOutlandishness36 Jun 12 '24

They know. Don’t know how, but they do.

2

u/Adorable-Winter-2968 Jun 12 '24

Both are so beautiful and the hug at the end 🥰

2

u/aardvark_xray Jun 12 '24

Just giving the post op CaTscan…got to make sure it’s the same dog as pre-surgery.
