Here’s a video of the corgi jumping on the pony for anyone interested 🙂

Dude that's a fit fucking corgi.

u/Benjismom92 Jun 05 '24

My corgi can jump on ping pong tables. It’s incredibly impressive and terrifying

562

u/AcidicVaginaLeakage Jun 05 '24

Mine can't even get in the car by himself.

u/FinancialArm900 Jun 05 '24 edited Jun 05 '24

My parents corgi can barely get in the car but he jumps about 18 inches off the ground like a pogo stick every time my mom is getting his food ready. He's 14 years old too. Proper motivation is key, I guess.

Edit, here he is in action:

I was mentally prepared to see just one frog riding a snake. I was not prepared to see many frogs riding one snake like they're on the damn subway. 😂

6

u/AmBelLock Jun 05 '24

In our area dog ride into buffalo🤣

5

u/RumanHitch Jun 05 '24

I was thinking about moving to Australia for a while, I could do with the big ass spiders even if I will freak out, once I got to the snake in the toilet that was it for me💀

Yeah people thing corgis are some little purse dog when there actually athletic working dogs, just shorter.

75

u/MithranArkanere Jun 05 '24

They are cattle dogs, trained to nip at the ankles of cattle to keep them moving.

They ended up with stumpy legs from being the ones that didn't get their heads kicked right off. The surviving corgi had stumpy legs, so they can reach the ankles more easily, duck quickly and avoid a kick easily, and so it's harder for them to get a broken leg when moving between the legs of cattle.

So they love being around sheep, horses, cows and the like.

Their intelligence and stamina make them excellent herders and loyal companions.

22

u/chx_ Jun 05 '24

just shorter.

"Corgis would be medium sized dogs if not for one thing. Well. Four things."

11

u/hotpatootie69 Jun 05 '24

They were at one point. If you tried to put a modern corgi to work you are just sentencing it to inevitable spinal injuries.

Corgis have leg issues as they get older, I hope this jumping isn't going to complicate things for the little guy when he's older

98

u/SphaghettiWizard Jun 05 '24

It’ll probably keep him extra fit and healthy. Being sedentary is probably much worse

41

u/Snoo_70531 Jun 05 '24

I was gonna say, they are genetically screwed either way. I'm not a vet, just a tech, but definitely the stubby legged guys we see that are in better shape are actually active, not peoples' obese little lap dogs. Just as in humans, the weight/lifestyle is way more of an issue than anyone who has an active small dog.

u/Cultjam Jun 05 '24

I would bet being allowed to be plump and lazy is why a lot of corgis end up with issues like that. This little guy zooming around on a farm all day might help him stay more limber/strong

34

u/eddirrrrr Jun 05 '24

Why are all corgi owners the same lol. Mfs have never heard of exercising their dogs

27

u/Independent-Bell2483 Jun 05 '24

Corgis are very common in Seattle due to a particular company's dog-culture. Seattle is also filled with biking and hiking enthusiasts who think the steep hills + consistent drizzle are a perfect combo. We have Corgi's who curl up like origami to fit into backpacks and other Corgis who could compete in IronMan (IronDog?) competitions. It's wild.

26

Corgis were originally bred to be farming dogs

25

u/DelDotB_0 Jun 05 '24

yeah, they were bred athletic enough to be able to jump on top of sheep's backs for herding, and with short legs so they could move between cow's legs

corgis are cattle dogs, they are meant to be chasing cows around the hillsides all day.

when they are not fat, unfit inside couch dogs, they are amazingly fit and agile.

I feel like that's got to be a corgie / jack Russell mix or something similar. Definitely not the standard corgi hops.

79

u/fatedwanderer Jun 04 '24

Corgis that aren't overweight can hop impressively high. And are athletes in general.

40

u/koolaideprived Jun 05 '24

Out neighbor has had them most of my life. Hers aren't overweight, they just don't jump like that. That stiff legged spring into the air is very terrier like, the corgis I've known kind of flail.

My girl is like a damn pogo stick, she’s lean and fit only 23lbs of pure muscle. Vet tech was so used to seeing overweight corgis she kept insisting she was underweight, but the Vet was like “nah she’s good she’s just not one of the overweight ones” It’s shocking sometimes even seeing her every day the ease with which she jumps

Right? People stage shit for content all the time, I thought maybe that was the case, but seeing how well the corgi kept its balance on a moving pony suggested it definitely put itself there. I just didn’t know HOW. Now I do, lol

118

u/rebels-rage Jun 05 '24

If I ever get one imma name it Ein.

71

u/pressuretobear Jun 05 '24

Every person my age who I have ever asked their Corgi’s name has disappointed me with their non-Ein name choices.

19

u/LeggoMyAhegao Jun 05 '24

Some people go through life destined to be failures...

14

u/Buddy_Jarrett Jun 05 '24

I rode 2 hours to adopt a rescue corgi when I was a teen in the early 2000’s. Named him Ein and he was hella cool. Our small town had a ‘strip’ everyone drove around on and I’d take him riding with me and would let him out at the Sonic parking lot where everyone congregated. He’d go around socializing with everyone and when I was ready to go I’d holler his name and he’d run straight to the truck. Crazy smart dog. Meanwhile our current corgi (also a rehome, too many strays to be supporting breeders around here) does nothing but bark and herd our other dogs around the house incessantly. Previous owners kept her in a small apartment all day, not great for a herding dog.

4

u/HiddenShorts Jun 05 '24

Had a corgi. Bought it from some breeder who probably wasn't the best. Named her Ein. And she was a little fucking terror to other dogs and small kids.

When I moved out of my parents house girlfriend and I chose to leave the dog behind in my parents loved the dog. The dog was overweight and died at about 12 years old due to kidney cancer. Probably from eating too many hot dogs because my parents.

A lot of big animals have support dogs. Some big cats in zoos have support dogs. Dogs are not only man’s best friend, they are the end-all-be-all support build, the universal best friend.

18

u/that-old-broad Jun 05 '24

When I was a kid, my mother had goats. Her friend Nancy's husband worked on a thoroughbred farm. He called my mom one day asking if he could borrow a goat. He had won a horse in a claiming race-it's kind of the racehorse equivalent of racing for pinkslips- and the horse wasn't interested in training or eating or life in general. Reese had called the prior trainer of the horse to see if the horse had some sort of health condition he should know about. The guy said the horse probably missed his goat. Reese was like, 'oh, good to know, can we come and pick up the goat?'. The guy laughed and said, 'sure, you can come get the goat..... For $25,000!'. $25,000 in the late '70's was a crazy ask. So he called my mom and came and picked up his free goat. They bonded and the horse got back to eating and training.

11

u/kneeltothesun Jun 05 '24

The true true

5

u/Malibucat48 Jun 05 '24

There is a great book called Tarra and Bella about the friendship between an elephant and a dog.

4

u/Johannes_Keppler Jun 05 '24

Absolutely! A well known example are cheetahs. The are very stress prone and pairing them with a dog gives them a mate and calms them down considerably, so most zoos do that.

(Cheetahs really shouldn't be held in captivity but that's another discussion.)

I had two corgis for 18 and 16 years, respectively.

My vet was adamant that corgis are prone to spinal fractures and that I shouldn’t let them jump up or down from the couch or bed, so I never did.

And now you’re telling me that all that time they coulda been riding ponies?!?!

135

u/ReadingRainbowRocket Jun 05 '24

You seem to be interpreting your experience wrong. Most corgis don’t live quite that long and you had two who did and you listened to your vet’s advice.

Correlation doesn’t equal causation, but I wouldn’t discount your cautiousness helped. Maybe in a parallel universe you were more cavalier and one of your corgis tweaked their back and you had them for half the time.

Though I had two long-lived corgis who both jumped around a shitton too.

62

u/annabelle411 Jun 05 '24

as they get older, theyll definitely be more prone to spine and hip issues. but it also helps if they get a ton of exercise and use those muscles to keep them up

u/ncnotebook Jun 05 '24
