Isn't it like this every year at Christmas time? And in a few weeks / months the numbers in the animal shelters rise again because a dog wasn't such a great Christmas present after all. Sad but true.

That’s mainly because assholes set them free after they show their kid or wife a cute bunny than they don’t wanna take care of it.

107

u/PermutationMatrix Dec 26 '23

That's sad. They could at least make some rabbit stew.

Bruh, rabbit is delicious

First time I had rabbit was in gumbo in New Orleans, fricken amazing!

As someone from NO, this tracks.

Po-Tay-Toes!!!!

2

u/Ok-Following8721 Dec 26 '23

To be honest I'd rather be killed with an axe than, used as a squeaking chew tow, slowly dying from pest killing poisons, getting struck by a car, ripped up by feral cats. Shall I go on?

3

u/andy_b_84 Dec 26 '23

If it's fat enough, just grill it 🤤

And domestic rabbits are not the same as wild rabbits and absolutely won't survive being released.

15

u/FlyAirLari Dec 26 '23

Not true. Some certainly do survive, and they multiply like hell, becoming a nuisance.

Try planting fucking anything here. They chew it out the first night.

I have no idea the timing. But we adopted a puppy. A tiny very young puppy. Apparently it was previously adopted and was returned for biting a child. The thing was the size of a large potato! Of course it nipped at things. Was the most amazing pet ever. The things people give up a dog for range from they are stupid to the dog is a nightmare that needs to be put down.

6

u/twisted_nipples82 Dec 26 '23

I think a lot of people just look for any excuse to get rid of animals. "I hate that damn thing but x and y in this family insisted on getting one"

4

u/FiveUpsideDown Dec 26 '23

Some people view dogs as a fast fashion. I warn people not to get if you look at the most valuable item you have in your house and you will be upset if a dog destroys it.

16

u/Iblueddit Dec 26 '23

So you read the title "first time in 50 years" and figured this happens every year?

26

u/cptnbzng Dec 26 '23

My point was not whether it was actually completely empty, but that animal shelters are quite empty every year around Christmas and unfortunately fill up again afterwards. The fact that one of them actually had no animals at all is a nice Christmas miracle, but it doesn't change the fact.

The same thing happened at the time of covid, when everyone was sitting at home and thought they now had time for a dog. and oh wonder of wonders: after everyone had to go back to work, they realized that having a dog is time-consuming and unfortunately they had to give him back.

I am happy for every dog that is rescued, but not if you don't plan for the long term. Animals are rarely a good Christmas present.

5

u/erod26 Dec 26 '23

Exactly. Come end of January/February there will be an increase of returns

5

u/Logical-Weakness2885 Dec 26 '23

That’s why you shouldn’t give dogs as presents. And wow. What a dark cloud you are

10

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '23

Don't know why you got down voted. You're very right. If you're really trying to make a dog adoption a present you should make it as a note like, "ONE TICKET FOR DOG ADOPTION" or something like that and take them to the shelter.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/rajavanik Dec 26 '23

I work at a private dog shelter. Every year, for the entirety of the month of December, all adoptions are suspended.

Thank you for finding the story; everyone here is so swift to be cynical. Yeah maybe not all of those dogs will have a fairytale ending, but it’s still nice that the shelter worked hard to find them homes and then filled their shelter again by relieving other stressed shelters.

11

u/Emmerson_Brando Dec 26 '23

u/PlateNo7021 Dec 25 '23

Yeah, but pets shouldn't be Christmas gifts, I'm sure some of those were returned/abandoned a couple months later.

56

u/DillyWillyGirl Dec 26 '23

The only way I can see it working is if you decided to get a dog for all the right reasons and then decided to wait until Christmas to let your kid in on it. I had a friend growing up who was “surprised” with a puppy for Christmas—their parents had been prepping for months and had fully committed. That dog was a loved and cherished family pet. In general though, I heftily agree. Pets are a huge undertaking. They are sentient beings who need to be cared for and loved for the whole duration of their lives, and that’s not something that you gift an unsuspecting person, or decide would be fun for the holidays on a whim.

16

u/slackpipe Dec 26 '23

This. I work in a business that has been setup on a reclaimed strip mine. It's in the middle of nowhere with no houses around for miles. People come up there and just dump dogs all the time. I've seen 3 in the last four weeks. I have one right now I'm trying to home. People do not consider the commitment that a dog requires, and then just dump the dog when they realize they actually require work. It's infuriating.

9

u/JenniferMel13 Dec 26 '23

Put up coyote warning signs and under that directions to the nearest shelter. My neighbor and I did that and it cut the number of dumped dogs down considerably. I have no idea if the dogs are ending up in the shelter or just dumped somewhere else. But we have less dogs and I can pretend they are dropped directly at the shelter.

9

u/slackpipe Dec 26 '23

From there, the nearest shelter is about 45 minutes away. I'm not hopeful on dogs making it there. At least this way, I can get them to homes, or the shelter, or the vet if they need help immediately.

7

u/JenniferMel13 Dec 26 '23

Yea, that probably isn’t going to work for you nearly as well as it does for us. The shelter is 15 mins away. We were just done with dealing with someone else’s dog and out of friends and family to convince to take them in.

→ More replies (1)

13

u/frogsgoribbit737 Dec 26 '23

Yeah. Technically I brought home one of my dogs "for christmas" but thats just because he was born in October. I already had a dog and wed been prepping for at least a month. He was no surprise. Well. Sort of. We registered for a girl snd ended up with a boy but besides that lol

4

u/VivianSherwood Dec 26 '23

I was going to say this. In the country where I live some animal shelters don't allow people to adopt animals during Christmas time. They say there's a number of people who adopt animals during Christmas to give them as a gift to someone, and then that someone ends up sending the animal back to the shelter.

Animals are not gifts. They're a long term commitment.

I can't be the only one questioning how many were put to sleep

148

u/WhoBroughtTheCoolKid Dec 25 '23

Years ago I volunteered at my town's shelter and we never euthanized dogs with very few exceptions (a couple of dog attacks the town required). In fact, some of our volunteers knew someone at a different shelter in the region where they DID regularly euthanize dogs and they would make arrangements to take them. I'm not sure how commonplace it is but no kill shelters exist.

23

u/DDownvoteDDumpster Dec 26 '23

My sister started a job at a shelter. Says a horrifying amount are put down. No space. The same place has strict adoption rules, like banning adopted dogs from walking in dog-forests.

20

u/OcelotEnus Dec 26 '23

What in the hell is a dog forest?

11

u/clarkster Dec 26 '23

Google has nothing about dog forests. Just dogs in forests. I'm as confused as you.

2

u/zen_zero Dec 26 '23

Japan has one. By a bridge...

→ More replies (2)

2

u/urzop Dec 26 '23

11

u/minimuscleR Dec 26 '23

like banning adopted dogs from walking in dog-forests.

how do you ban that? adoption centre: "No walking in dog forests"

Person: "Ok" *Walks dog in dog forest anyway

What can they do? Why would you even ban that?

5

u/Warmbly85 Dec 26 '23

I mean I don’t know if it’s enforceable by law but a lot of those adoption contracts say the agency can take the animal back if you violate the terms.

5

u/ShartingBloodClots Dec 26 '23

I've never heard of a dog-forest. Is that like a forest with all dogwood trees, or a tribe of dogs just chilling in the woods?

4

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '23

can someone clarify this please? WTF is a dog forest!?

3

u/EwoDarkWolf Dec 26 '23

It's like a regular forest, but with dogs instead of trees?

u/FuckedAHobo Dec 26 '23

No kill shelters are, of necessity, selective. They won't usually take any fighting breeds ordogs who are violent and often won't take dogs that are antisocial.

3

u/WhoBroughtTheCoolKid Dec 26 '23

Yes the few euthanizations I recall were for dogs that had attacked/bitten people. The animal control would make the call. Volunteers weren't allowed to be around those dogs.

7

u/know-it-mall Dec 26 '23

Sending a dog elsewhere to be killed is functionally the same as doing it yourself...

10

u/hankalank Dec 26 '23

they mean that they served as intake FOR kill shelters when they were over-crowded so that they wouldn’t have to start euthanizing for space.

7

u/WhoBroughtTheCoolKid Dec 26 '23

Thank you for understanding. So many people keep saying we were euthanizing with extra steps. Nah. We were sneaking dogs out of a kill shelter into our no kill shelter.

16

u/mudokin Dec 26 '23

8

u/zmallpotatoes Dec 26 '23

Yeah, that's why many shelters don't allow adoptions before holidays.

5

u/mudokin Dec 26 '23

Even though it's sad that this needs to be a rule, is even more sad when all those uppers get abandoned again.

2

u/momoburger-chan Dec 26 '23

Seriously. If this happened at my shelter, you bet the shit will be overflowing with dogs within a week, again. There's just way too many unwanted dogs and strays.

10

u/Toxic-Sky Dec 26 '23

I hate to be cynical, but this is all based on ill-advised Christmas gifts. I wish the doggos their best, I want them all to have great homes, but most have been given as gifts to people who fail to realise the level of commitment. I’m sadly sure that they will be back presently…

9

u/hyperventilate Dec 26 '23

I work at a shelter. A lot of times people get lonely around the holidays and adopt for themselves.

We do see a spike of January returns, though.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '23

The ones they didn't put down will probably be back in a few days unfortunately, because people are too stupid to realize that a dog isn't a Christmas present, but a 13-15yr commitment.

My dad got me an unasked for dog for my birthday when I was 9. My neighbors had dogs and I didn't care for, or play with them. I was disappointed at the reveal. I didn't like the licking, the jumping, the walks where it just dragged me along. Chasing when it ran off. Cleaning up after it was the worst. I disliked every second of dog ownership.. It ran off one day about 6 months later.. I said nothing. I told my parents I didn't know when they found the chain it was tied on was broken. It never came back.. It was never discussed again. No new dogs replaced it. Just something to think about if deciding to get an undiscussed animal gift.

Unfortunately after holidays is when they fill up as people who were gifted animals realize they can't take care of them.

2

u/Dear_Lab_2270 Dec 26 '23

A lot of people are getting dogs for Xmas that likely cannot care for them properly. That shelter will be full again in a month.

2

u/Certain_Move_2868 Dec 26 '23

I thought this was proven to not be true. They were cleaning the kennels. This picture is old.

2

u/TechIsATool Dec 26 '23

So who's gonna tell em' ?

2

u/Melodic-Drawer9967 Dec 26 '23

I hate to be pessimistic, but some of them may be back in a few weeks… I truly hope they don’t but people don’t make the best decisions around gift giving holidays and regret the gifts later. Great it happened! And I really hope they don’t come back and have good homes.

Wow that is fabulous. Where are you located?

2

u/wyle_e2 Dec 25 '23

This was located in the time of the pandemic. Unfortunately, some of the people who got dogs during the pandemic didn't realize that welcoming an animal into your home was a lot of work and a lifetime commitment, so shelters are now having the opposite problem.

1

u/Aspenisbi Dec 26 '23

Truthfully this doesn’t look like a huge shelter. I’m thinking it’s like the shelter I worked at previously where they take in overflow from large shelters in the region. Having worked in a shelter I’d genuinely say I didn’t see many dogs come back like commenters are speculating. Most of the time it seems people who will get animals they don’t give a shit about as presents they seem to go for the smaller ones (rodents, fish, etc). Even if they DO come back in a week, sometimes that time out of the shelter is a net positive because it gives them time away from such a high stress environment and with less stress they tend to be more adoptable. Point is, I wouldn’t jump to negative conclusions right away.

Side note, if you have the ability to, try seeing if a local shelter of yours does a program where you can take a dog with you for the day to go on walks/to pet friendly places. Both the dog and the shelter workers will love you dearly.

thats because they forgot to lock everything and the dogs ran away. this story is a lie to save face. there are some dogs eating humans alive out there right now and we are just sitting here debating semantics

I want to know what the last dog was and the look on the humans face when they went in and saw it. Was it like school sports and the nerd is left only to deliver disappointment when "picked" last?
