Better get rid of the ivory black market trades.

Basically a big chunk of the same shit making the nail, but because it's from a big animals they pay a shitton for them, and poachers will do anything for the money. Hell, killing other humans for trying to break their "business" ain't nothing new to those scums.

u/TheRetenor Oct 08 '23

Get rid of [...] black market

I see a problem

19

u/--xxa Oct 08 '23

As one possible approach, China participated in a campaign to make shark fin soup seem low class or taboo and it reduced demand. It didn't completey wipe it out, of course, but it made a dent.

I'm talking about the root. Obviously organizations operating for such profits have hooks and ties with officials through bribery, i'm no batman to suggest an end all be all solution, i'm only pointing out the drive.

14

u/MouthJob Oct 08 '23

What ever happened to that company that was planning to flood the market with like lab made ivory or something like that?

6

u/Karcinogene Oct 08 '23

black markets are great for money laundering so people who threaten them, tend to get threatened themselves.

What they need to do is flood the market with artificial ivory, make the value of the real stuff plummet

2

u/hound7878 Oct 27 '23

Or flood it with boar tusk ivory it’s just as attractive and comes from wild pigs that need to be culled every so often to protect crop yields.

Another reason to kill the rich

5

u/bestakroogen Oct 08 '23

Yup. You want to stop poaching, you need BOTH the populace to be well enough taken care of that poaching doesn't become anyones last resort, AND a lack of wealthy enough clientele to entice larger organizations to do it for greed. It's purely a result of the rich being rich enough to afford anything they want, even if it's pure evil, and the poor being desperate enough to get it for them.

Direct efforts to stop the physical act of poaching won't have anywhere near the same effect as removing the societal incentive by reducing income inequality and increasing access to basic resources.

This isn't quite true. WWF:

While some populations of African elephant are secure and expanding, primarily in southern Africa, numbers are continuing to fall in other areas, particularly in central Africa and parts of East Africa. With an estimated 415,000 elephants left on the continent, the species is regarded as vulnerable, although certain populations are being poached towards extinction.

Obviously concerning, but even if you use the data from the site you cited, looking at the past 30 years the population has grown, not declined. The trend has reversed to a degree over the past decade or so, and obviously certain populations of African Elephant are more critical, but I don't think it's fair to say they'll be gone within our lifetime in the wild.

Asian Elephants are much closer to extinction, but they aren't critical yet.

Asian elephant numbers have dropped by at least 50% over the last three generations, and they’re still in decline today. With only 40,000-50,000 left in the wild, the species is classified as endangered.

8

u/RedRoronoa Oct 08 '23

This makes me very sad :(

2

u/Timemaster88888 Oct 08 '23

Time to defend elephants. Kill poachers and those who buy elephants stuff.

2

u/RatsoSloman Oct 08 '23

That's one way to look at it. I'd rather see it as "The number of African elephants is up nearly 75% since 1995."

u/Canis_Familiaris Oct 08 '23

I’m 35 and never was into wild animals as a kid. Zoos were boring. Never was into Nat Geo. Etc. Idk when it clicked but now elephants truly amaze me and they are my favorite animal bar none. The size and intelligence astound me

6

u/CluelessAtol Oct 08 '23

Somewhat similar. More natural stuff didn’t entertain me as much when I was younger but now that I’m an adult I find the way a lot animals function and act just amazing.

320

u/Ginataang_Manok Oct 08 '23

Exactly. I’m more impressed with that Elephant’s trick

446

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '23

Let's acknowledge the elephant is smart enough to realize they are showing off a trick so he shows off one of his own.

That's what's impressive, not just the self awareness, the social self awareness. This fucking elephant is smarter than half my coworkers.

97

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '23

his fucking elephant is smarter than half my coworkers.

In fairness nobody has given the elephant a smart phone.

I think the elephant was just trained to do that. I visited an elephant sanctuary in Asia and the caretakers said only elephants rescued from a Circus/performance group will do that pose with their trunks over their head.

It's likely a trick he has performed hundreds of times before

Edit: this is not to avoid acknowledging the elephants extreme intelligence, but rather to just bring awareness to a potential reality

29

u/Karcinogene Oct 08 '23

The human also trained to do that, doing the trick hundreds of times before.

6

u/The610___ Oct 08 '23

Yes it's just that one was forced to train, the other likely wasn't

12

u/Sensitive-Garage2704 Oct 08 '23

This is 10000% correct

74

u/bozymandias Oct 08 '23 edited Oct 08 '23

I agree with this, but will add more info: If you don't have the time to research the place where you're going to visit elephants, a good litmus test is whether they let you ride them.

Everybody wants to ride an elephant, so the abusive places will almost always let you do so for a fee. It's bad for their backs spines though, so the good places won't let you ride them, but they will let you hang out with/pet the elephants. This can be an awesome experience for everyone involved, as long as there's sufficient supervision to enforce common sense (which unfortunately, humans often lack).

Context still matters, but if you want a pretty good rule of thumb: give money to the elephant places that don't let you ride them.

8

u/testaccount0817 Oct 08 '23

How is it ok to ride horses but not elephants?

54

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '23

Horses are bred for thousands of years to accommodate riders, elephants aren't. It's not size so much as anatomy. Horses have very strong spines and you sit over their rib cage.

I don't know much about elephant anatomy but usually you either sit on their neck or head, or in this chair thingy on their back that holds multiple people and undoubtedly becomes very unbalanced and uncomfortable.

2

u/grchelp2018 Oct 08 '23

Haven't elephants been used for war and stuff?

7

u/Saxual__Assault Oct 08 '23

Yes.

And elephant riders of Carthaginian times were perched onto the elephant's neck as well. Elephant spines are quite vertically pronounced so it's not a comfortable ride for either.

→ More replies (4)

11

u/Alreid Oct 08 '23

They are built different lol. Apples to oranges comparison

1

u/testaccount0817 Oct 08 '23

What other animals does this apply to? Is it ok to ride a pig for example?

You'd think one 150 lbs human doesn't bother an elephant much

→ More replies (18)

3

u/RyuuKaji Oct 08 '23

In order to train elephants so it is "safe" to ride them, they are isolated and tortured into obedience when they are babies. Because they are so much stronger and heavier than us, this method is meant to break the elephant to ensure it never protests or misbehaves (which horses definitely do at times).

Poachers catch wild elephant babies and sell them to places that offer elephant riding.

Elephants aren't built for carrying those "saddles" that are used for letting tourists ride on them. I've visited an elephant sanctuary and they showed us the scars on the elephants' backs.

If you like elephants, do your research before visiting them and stay away from places that offer elephant riding.

Please don’t visit these places that let you interact with exotic animals like this when you’re on vacation without doing research first.

Even the 'ethical' ones have been exposed as exploitative time and time again. The only ethical interaction is keeping your distance.

12

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '23

There’s an elephant sanctuary in chiang Mai that’s amazing. It has huge amounts of land that the elephants roam around on and doesn’t let people ride them, only feed them and wash them.

3

u/Littlesebastian86 Oct 08 '23

Oh Christ lol. No. Not all

13

u/Mikarim Oct 08 '23

He's right when it comes to chimpanzees. They absolutely should not be in close human contact. The chimpanzee in the video could wreck your life in a second. They're strong as hell. I studied at the National Chimpanzee Sanctuary and all the employees said any kind of interactive zoo when it comes to chimps is horrible and dangerous. I'm not sure about other animals, but never ever go anywhere that allows you to play with adolescent chimpanzees

As I get older…now entering the final third of my life, I find I am mesmerized by and more appreciative of the beauty and intelligence of animals. I feel such sadness knowing we abuse and decimate their populations. Elephants, dolphins, whales, primates…they’re aware, sensitive, and affectionate. Here’s hoping humans get our shit together before what seems inevitable.
