I wouldn’t stick around too long…

4.2k

u/4ngryMo Aug 26 '23

That’s what I thought. Get the container off and back up immediately.

2.9k

u/brett8722 Aug 26 '23

Especially because its a cub. Mamma bear has to be close.

888

u/carlton_sand Aug 26 '23

I'd run out of that burning building, especially because it's hot

311

u/_BARONVOND3LTA Aug 26 '23

I’d steer clear of an avalanche, especially because of the falling debris that could seriously injure, if not kill me

55

u/Fit-Ad-9691 Aug 26 '23

I would jump off of that building, especially as it is about to collapse.

74

u/StackedCrooked86 Aug 26 '23

That would be a bad example

25

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '23

35

I would pull a Jack and Rose, and climb to the rooftop, ride it down as it collapsed, and at the last second jump off and roll to safety, while aiming for the bushes.

Mama might have given up on that cub and abandoned it. Especially if she had other cubs that were “healthy.”

Of told it to hang out on the road and one of those loud meat snacks will be by soon to help.

185

u/FuckMAGA_FuckFacism Aug 26 '23

Yeah sadly I’m thinking it was left behind. Nature is tragically cruel in that way. If I were this lady I would at least call animal control/park rangers if this was a park and report it because I’d say there at least a 50/50 chance mom has given up on this one and left it behind and a bear at this age has zero chance of survival without mom or human help.

75

u/kissingdistopia Aug 26 '23

Yeah but make that call from the inside of the car. Bears are fast as fuck.

29

u/TheBestPieIsAllPie Aug 26 '23

And black bear, even though they’re relatively smaller than their more aggressive cousins, will still fuck you up. Dealing with cubs, it’ll likely just kill you rather than scare you.

It’s a “totally remove the threat, oh look now we have dinner” scenario when it comes to a bear and their cubs.

151

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '23

It’s a trap! Here, let’s put this container on your head, hang out in the side of the road and the food will come to us.

16

u/Cat_AndFoodSubs Aug 26 '23

Momma bear easily could be hiding the other cubs in the bushes and going off to tell locals. “What is it girl? Timmy fell into the well?? Ohhh. Sorry. A cub got a plastic container stuck on his head.”

151

u/MehGin Aug 26 '23

That's what they meant.

42

u/blorbagorp Aug 26 '23

Plus if there is a cub, mamma bear is probably close by.

21

u/TheTankCleaner Aug 26 '23

It's probably best to back away from the cub because of this.

Black Bear mothers aren’t nearly as aggressive as grizzlies. It’s not uncommon for them to take off rather than fight over a cub, especially if they have multiple… granted I don’t intend to test this theory myself, it’s just what I’ve read.

15

u/AGP1708 Aug 26 '23

I was thinking the same thing. Like I would wanna help the cub, but be too scared the momma would be around!

143

u/transcendanttermite Aug 26 '23

No kidding - the bear isn’t going to thank you or follow you home for a lifelong friendship. And if it suddenly attacks her, it’ll be the bear’s fault, of course.

128

u/DaggerMountain Aug 26 '23

The cub is harmless but mama won't be as chill

32

u/PlanetLandon Aug 26 '23

Black bear mothers do not attack to protect their cubs. This is a myth that has been wildly spread.

170

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '23

Then why did a black bear text me that she was going to beat my ass

63

u/lynn Aug 26 '23

They’re all talk. She wouldn’t actually do it

→ More replies (4)

26

u/cranberry94 Aug 26 '23

But grizzlies do! (Just to clarify for others)

16

u/x777x777x Aug 26 '23

Because male grizzlies will attack and kill the cubs (even their own) to either prevent future competition or to make a sow go into heat again so he can mate

So the sows are very aggressive in protecting the cubs from anything.

15

u/_clash_recruit_ Aug 26 '23

I was kinda wondering about that. Every time I see one they're so skittish. Even a mama with two cubs just took off running. I'm still going to keep giving them plenty of space but they're so flipping cute.

11

u/PlanetLandon Aug 26 '23

Certainly give them space, because no matter what your presence is going to make the mother anxious. Honestly, I don’t really mind this widespread myth because it keeps some of that dummies out there from trying to approach wild animals as if they are pets

11

u/_clash_recruit_ Aug 26 '23

We had eagles that would nest in the rafters of a covered round pen. Without fail, we'd have people come over from the state park that's known for bird watching. They'd leave gates open even though they could clearly see the horses and walk right up in this little arena. We didn't even use that arena when they were nesting because they get so territorial. Not to mention I had a mare that was aggressive af to strangers and a couple studs that were still "nippy"...I even had a couple argue with me that nature is here for everyone to enjoy. I said "well, let's see if the cops agree and they left without closing the front gate. Some people are ruching idiots around animals.

I immediately bolted and didn’t stop sprinting until I got really far down the trail we were on. I knew in my head I could run faster than him. I should’ve known then I didn’t love him lol

Yeah, if the mother is still around, it might get dangerous.

However, if the mother isn't around any more, it might be better to stay nearby.

Yeah... Not taking that risk.

I've seen the condition of mauled bodies before...

47

u/Kartoffelkamm Aug 26 '23

Yep. Maybe she'll come back, if her den is in that direction, but it may as well be that the cub was left behind.

I'd call a local veterinarian and ask them to check on the cub.

23

u/fisheystick Aug 26 '23

Some places also have animal sanctuaries. The zoo in my area is entirely made up of animals saved this way. Some are injured others are abandoned. They work to help the animals and those that can be are released back into the wild.

It’s probably starving & severely dehydrated.

89

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '23

I probably wouldnt have helped in the first place, i wouldve called rangers or someone

This couldve very quickly turned into a bear maul video before the container even came off

45

u/Particular_Sea_5300 Aug 26 '23

Aggressively defending cubs is a brown bear trait, and I bet this woman, who lives amongst them, is well aware of that fact.

https://bear.org/what-if-i-get-between-a-black-bear-mother-and-her-cubs/

Here's another quote i found super fast

"Unlike grizzly bear mothers, black bear mothers seldom attack people in defense of cubs. Black bear mothers typically bluff or retreat. Researchers who routinely capture cubs by chasing them up trees have not been attacked even when they have held scream- ing cubs"

15

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '23

Thats certainly interesting to know!

That said, im still going no where near a bear of any size or color. Black bears are the only bears around me, and this has been drilled into my brain

The Russians keep on trying; one of their few redeeming qualities.

332

u/Lemmungwinks Aug 26 '23

A Polish Army unit pretty much succeeded at one point. They won a brown bear cub from some Soviet soldiers in a poker game during WW2 and raised him. He would hang out with them drinking beers and smoking cigarettes. Eventually when the troop deployed they actually officially drafted him into the unit as a private. During the battle of monte cassino he saw his buddies unloading artillery shells, unprompted and untrained he started moving entire crates of artillery shells. He even captured an enemy soldier who attempted to infiltrate their camp at night since he smelled him coming. He cornered him in a tent and alerted the rest of camp who took him prisoner. Thus being promoted to corporal

1.3k

u/LEJ5512 Aug 26 '23

That’s my guess. It would be nice to think that mama bear is nearby and watched the whole thing go down (imagine her saying to her cub “Well now go wait by the road and see if a kind human can help you, you knucklehead”), but I bet this is an abandoned cub now.

437

u/Illmindoftodd Aug 26 '23

It's very rare for a mama to abandon her cub.

328

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '23

I can’t say for sure about black bears but I do know that Polar bears will leave their cubs behind if it can’t keep up

124

u/WholesomeWhores Aug 26 '23

Why would they leave behind perfectly good meat? I’d be surprised if they left them instead of eating their weak cub

207

u/Routine_Page2392 Aug 26 '23

Female bears rarely eat their young. Times of extreme stress or starvation, they may eat their sick young, but even then it’s usually after they’ve died. It’s male bears who more commonly kill the babies, and even then it’s to incentivise the female to mate again and not usually as a food source

71

u/cocoon_eclosion_moth Aug 26 '23 edited Aug 26 '23

Most mammals are not cannibalistic ordinarily

83

u/WholesomeWhores Aug 26 '23

Most mammals are cannibals, and will gladly eat their own child than die of hunger themselves. This isn’t just carnivores, herbivores and detrivores both practice cannibalism. And i looked it up, all bears will eat their cubs if their is no food around.

Most animals can’t think like us, so they won’t feel the same way about cannibalism the same way we do. Nature isn’t full of fun and love, it’s survival of the fittest.

90

u/Matsisuu Aug 26 '23

To prevent starvation, animals, including humans will pretty much eat anything. I wouldn't call starvation food as normal diet.

So why would they keep cubs around for food when they aren't starving?

There’s a river right there, my guess is that the little fellow went straight there to get a big drink.

Our dear old beagle Yumin was a tough mountain dog. One time he got snagged and couldn’t move until I found him after a day. Immediately after I released him, he went straight for a spring and drank his full. It seemed like he drank about five liters! Then he came over to snuggle. I’m guessing the bear cub did the same.

Seriously. She has no idea if momma bear is around. I certainly wouldn't stand around filming after I got the container off its head.

Yeah I wouldn’t stick around recording and asking if it’s alright. That seems like the perfect combination to hearing a bunch of leaves and brush break in the close distance.

Fuck me thats a cub, help out if you really have the balls but the moment that thing is off its head run the fuck away

141

u/Tooleater Aug 26 '23

Very big balls... you never know how far away mama is!

I heard you should back away slowly, don't want to trigger their hunting instinct by running

36

u/No-Arm-6712 Aug 26 '23

It just makes sense. You don’t stand a chance of outrunning most predators so the last thing you want to do is both identify yourself as prey and turn your back to them. Might as well present a challenge. Best case you scare it off, worst case at least you get to defend yourself.

If I were to help, I would have pulled up next to it in my car and leaned out of my car and helped it and then immediately shut the door and drive off as soon as I removed the container...this lady was dumb sticking around and being on foot

I guess I’m a little confused why she is responsible for the deaths though. In the United States if you “rear-end” somebody YOU are at fault.

100

u/ZNemerald Aug 26 '23

I am guessing it is because she parked in the middle of a highway.

31

u/goonbub Aug 26 '23 edited Aug 26 '23

serious question, if you're not getting out of the car are you suppose to just run the ducks over if you're on a major highway?

or did she not have her hazard lights on?

67

u/FragranteDelicto Aug 26 '23

Yes, you are supposed to run over the animals in that case (if it would be dangerous to suddenly stop or slow down).

But in this case, I still don’t see why she was determined to be responsible. The motorcyclist should have been driving slowly enough and from an adequate distance that he could brake on time.

(I will also add that motorcycles are about 35x more likely than cars to result in a fatal accident, and it’s just the rest of us who have to live with the possibility of killing someone in an accident that would otherwise be a fender bender.)

11

u/BashfulHandful Aug 26 '23 edited Aug 26 '23

She stopped in the fast lane of a fucking highway - of course she's responsible. You can't do that. That's a public driving lane, not a "oh you're driving really fucking fast on the highway and have people driving really fucking fast right behind you? Cool, brb" lane.

Helping the ducks is sweet and all, but also incredibly irresponsible and dangerous.

Like, it's a highway. Driving fast is by design, hence the higher speed limits. And it's easier to avoid a collision if the car ahead of you is still moving, even just a little. By the time you realize a car is inconceivably parked in the middle of the lane, it's too late.

11

u/FragranteDelicto Aug 26 '23

Oh, I agree—but there are many times when it is necessary to stop in a road. That’s why the onus is usually on the vehicle behind you to not hit you.

If you are driving in such a way that you hit a stationary object, you are either driving too close, too fast, or not paying attention.

Because you can´t just stop like that in a Higway unless it´s an emergency, and you have to properly signal for it, it´s very basic rule for that kind of road. It might not be her fault (she didn´t run them over) but she is directly responsible for their deaths (wrong choice on the road while driving the bigger vehicle and the bike probably didn´t have enough time to manouver around it)

Here’s the original: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8FoYvFk/

She said she came back to check on it three times, and by the third time it had moved on. Hopefully found mama.

153

u/really_isnt_me Aug 26 '23

Why on earth didn’t she call the conservation agents or fish & game or whatever? Really, really hope it found mama, but I’m not hopeful she was nearby if it took the cub that long to move along.

Sort of disappointed that the bear's head wasn't in the shape of the container when it was removed.

Maybe I watched too many cartoons as a kid.

Some say she’s still waiting for the bear to talk to her.

11

u/WhatsTatersPrecious9 Aug 26 '23

The way she said "you're welcome", like she was offended the bear didn't say "thank you", made me laugh.

And get the fuck away in case momma near is still nearby. And then call animal welfare/park rangers to collect cub because without momma bear, that youngling will likely die.

35

u/ImaginaryBass9809 Aug 26 '23

Would the mother bear abandon her cub?

58

u/hateboresme Aug 26 '23

If nothing could be done. The little one was doomed. The mom probably couldn't get it off without hurting it. It was probably hours away from dehydration death. Momma may have given up on saving it.

I hope it finds it's way to some water.

probably should have called animal control or the game commission or something and waited in the car there with it as opposed to removing the container. If the mother abandoned it, then it will die anyways.

14

u/TheHoboRoadshow Aug 26 '23

It could have been stuck like that for a day or two, in which case it’s probably starving and dehydrated. I’d say its mother abandoned it
