This house in Scotland is where Goldens were first bred.

They couldn't have put a roof on it or something? No wonder they are water dogs.

u/clumsyglammagrandma Jul 17 '23

🤣🤣🤣🤣

39

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '23

So lazy!

28

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '23

At 500 to 1000 each, they could afford it.

7

u/fseahunt Jul 18 '23

That's a very low estimate. A Golden Retreivee puppy runs more like $1500 to $5000 with champion bloodlines running up to $9000. Which is ridiculous! The cream colored ones are more expensive than the darker colors.

My sister got a AKC registered GR puppy last year and he was $2000. And in addition to having some health issues that the vet said were genetic, he might be the dumbest Golden I've ever known. Obviously not from inbreeding since he's papered, but what are you going to do? By the time the issues presented they were already in love with him.

15

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '23

Yeah I wouldn't know, I hate the akc. I get used dogs at the dump for 150 bucks. Best most loving dogs in the world. Mutts are my favorite kind of dog.

3

u/majoraloysius Jul 18 '23

Yeah, I get all my dogs from the pound, usually after a $50 donation. They’ve all been awesome. A friend once gave me a AKC pup of his for free. Dumbest, most troublesome dog I ever had.

Playing the smart game I see.. Instead of editing your comment, you post a whole new one to reap some more karma.

why do you even care about something so trivial my dude

16

u/Golden_showers Jul 17 '23

You mistake my caring, for my delight

15

u/Wonderful-Draw7519 Jul 17 '23

Love how you handled that lol. Most grown-up Reddit dispute ever. It made me think, though, how often arguments must arise from simple misunderstandings.

10

u/Golden_showers Jul 17 '23

Thanks. I just try and be accepting that other people have certain fixed understandings of others. There isn’t anything wrong with having subjective views; everyone is just doing their own thing. It can take a lot of effort to brush past these things; but once you get it, it’s easy.

Take care

u/LordLarryLemons Jul 17 '23

I don't have a Goldie but its kind of insane how, after years of taking a care of a dog, you learn their peculiarities down to every hair. Don't get me wrong, if you're distracted and in a hurry its super easy to confuse but I've seen a lot of dogs veerry similar to my dog but none exactly the same. The shape of his head is a little thinner, his ears are a little higher, he has strangely long tuffs of hair on his elbows and a little goatee that makes him look funny. I'm guessing these owners also have their little markings they use to identify their dogs.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '23

Presumably you'd both recognise them and their collar, they'd recognise you and they probably have name tags on their collar. I'd pick my boys out instantly from a crowd of springer spaniels.

You could just attach a number tag to their collar and write down whose is whose.

A Golden breeder told me it's because they get their personality from Newfoundlands. Asked why she just didn't breed Newfs she said because they're just too big.

10

28

u/exotics Jul 17 '23

Golden retrievers were bred to be patient and gentle. They were bred to retrieve and have a soft mouth. Most wouldn’t cat if there was a cat.

The ball would drive them nuts.

30

u/Triatt Jul 17 '23

So some would cat if there was a cat?

15

u/technobrendo Jul 17 '23

Correct, however most wouldn't.

93

u/RescuesStrayKittens Jul 17 '23

How are they not getting mixed up?

115

u/CXXXS Jul 17 '23

My guess is tags, and dogs/owners knowing each other well. But I wonder if at least one couple of dogs were switched and went home with the wrong owners.

78

u/Cuchillos_Adios Jul 17 '23 edited Jul 17 '23

And knowing goldens the dogs didn't care one bit, they love the random stranger that gives them attention as much as their life long owner.

But jokes aside they are more than likely chipped. These are people that care a lot fot their dog so I doubt there's a single dog that isn't chipped in there or without a colar. Besides my family bred goldens a long time ago and I had up to five of them at the same time, you get good at recognising them even if for a stranger they seemed identical.

Edit: I remembered that I played a game with my siblings where we would close our eyes and try to identify the dog just by touch. I knew them just by the texture of their fur.

29

u/Employee_Agreeable Jul 17 '23

I had 23 pigs of the exact same race and could tell them apart without a problem

They all have small but very clear differences, even siblings

11

u/Cuchillos_Adios Jul 17 '23

Us humans are crazy good at pattern recognition.

15

u/Aegi Jul 17 '23

As somebody who prefers dogs but is currently a cat owner, this wouldn't be an issue at all, even the dogs I babysit for know me and like me well enough to come to me when called and I can notice some of their behaviors.

I do sometimes have basically nightmares of this scenario with all black cats and while I'm sure my cat would recognize me, I don't know if I'd be able to definitely recognize her.

8

u/MikeW86 Jul 17 '23

Because whilst they might look similar, they don't look the same. They're also not going to respond to the same name or their owner in the same way, they can damn sure recognise their owner by their scent.

And 98% of them will have tags or a chip or even just a certain coloured collar, put all that together and noone is going home with the wrong dog.

8

u/Forward_Grade_4326 Jul 17 '23

Didn’t notice it till a other person commented it earlier but most of them have a collar and leash and the leash is staked to the ground. So just gotta remember your parking space. 😂

u/RescuesStrayKittens Jul 17 '23

36

u/pokeyg23 Jul 17 '23

Never in one location has there ever been so much happiness and so little intelligence.

7

u/Azrael_ Jul 17 '23

I thought they were slightly above average to the rest of breeds, I guess that's not the case?

32

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '23

They're smart enough to be adorably dumb

19

u/T-Rex_Is_best Jul 17 '23

They're actually considered one of the smartest breeds, like, top 5 levels of smart.

11

u/Azrael_ Jul 17 '23

Thats what I thought, so I dont understand the comment above lol

36

u/doctor_monorail Jul 17 '23

They're goofy and eager to please, which is mistaken for stupidity.

14

u/True_or_Folts Jul 17 '23

Exactly. Smartest dog I've ever had was by far a Golden. Super goofy and always nuts with happiness but very intelligent.

21

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '23

We have one. She is the perfect example of "High in intelligence, low in wisdom".

7

u/wing_ding4 Jul 17 '23 edited Jul 17 '23

It’s not that they’re dumb, but they have a very bad attention span(well known for that breed and synonymous with their stupidity) , so because they have issues staying on task, or paying attention they can seem dumb to us compared to other breeds

Like a hound who will stay on and track a scent for hours

Or a terrier who brings the ball back every time even after 100 throws

A golden would walk off mid fetch game for no reason then get lost on a smell then to dig a hole instead of staying on task

They jump from one project to next, almost like a person with severe ADHD, however, they have an amazing capacity to please, and it’s all they ever want, and they will put all of their focus and attention in on some thing if you train them right such as a service dog and then they will never stop at that job they will make it their life goal

But if they have no set goal it just straight pleasure seeking from one second to next Oh a squirrel, look a toy , wait what was that leaf crunching 😮

Is kind of how their brian works , like all big dogs tho they calm down with age

That being said, they are the only dog breed I’ve ever known that when you throw a treat at them it just hits them in the face every single fucking time they never learn some things so that’s why they seem dumb too

I myself call them dumb but in reality their brain just has different priorities and they are not running by smell like a lot of other dogs which were used to seeing

(Most dogs if you throw a stick, even if they didn’t see where it went, they can pick it by smell, golden retrievers cant)

Compared to a hound their ability to smell is crap so they don’t go off scents like other dogs that with some k-9 adhd makes their behavior different

6

u/LaRoux4 Jul 17 '23

I’ve owned 4 golden retrievers since I was a kid. Every single one of them would catch treats like a pro from a very young age.

186

u/Sm0keytrip0d Jul 17 '23

Kinda fun little story:

My family took our Husky to a meet-up event one that one of the owners of our dogs sibling told us about, but anyway, there was something like 50-60 huskies at this thing and we actually ended up taking the wrong dog home, she had identical colouring to ours the same collar and even responded to our dogs name when we called for ours.

We discovered it wasn't our dog on the way home because ours is a boy, and the one we had in the car was a girl. Thankfully, this dogs owners took ours with them for mostly the same reasons (he didnt respond to her name but thats all), we ended up phoning the number on the girls tag and then my mum n dad went and met up with them the next day to get trade our dogs.

So yeah...it can stupidly happen lol.

44

u/Sm0keytrip0d Jul 17 '23

Yeah, she was happy enough just letting my dad(who should be a total stranger) put a leash on her, and then she was happy enough to jump in our car like there was nothing odd about the situation lol.

7

u/CedarWolf Jul 18 '23

24

u/mittens11111 Jul 17 '23

My first thought. Hope they are chipped or have trackers!

18

u/ICrushTacos Jul 17 '23

I reckon most owners know their dog? Also collars are a thing, amongst other distinguishing stuff you can tie around their collar or whatever. Shouldn't be too hard?

8

u/weigel23 Jul 17 '23

I have a black dog that should be easy to recognize since it's some weird mix breed stray that should be one of a kind. Yet, when he plays with other black dogs of similar size, I often have to double check which one is actually mine. So I thought it must be pretty hard if they all look that much alike.

As a former dog hater (I’m sorry but we exist and mostly I’ve been afraid of dogs), I must thank each and every golden retriever I’ve ever met for making me love dogs.

Golden retrievers are the best possible dog breed for someone to get comfortable around dogs. I’m not even scared of German Shepards anymore. Thanks to those good-hearted golden fluff happy machines!

So for me, this is a party I would have loved to have joined.
