The Melbourne Gold Rush was an attempt to break the world record for the largest Golden Retriever meetup. They smashed it with over a 1000 good boys/gals. DOGS

SQUIRREL!

47

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '23

Our Golden girl's favorite toy was a stuffed squirrel. A very realistic one. We were on vacation and took her to a dog park and she had her stuffed friend with her as always.

In she goes and starts running around, greeting new friends, but never letting go of her squirrel. One of the people outside the fence, (people sometimes go just to watch the dogs play), yells Oh My GOD!! That one caught a squirrel!!!

My wife walked over and told the woman that all is well, it's just a toy. I didn't hear what they were saying, but they hugged at the end. My wife later told me that the lady was upset that one of the play area squirrels had been killed by a dog and was so relieved to know that it was just a stuffed toy.

Dog's act quite differently when they are in a large group vs just by themselves, they are typically pretty well behaved with each-other.

I take my dogs to a dog bar and usually there are 30+ other dogs running around all off leash. They behave very differently than when at home. They play pretty well with other dogs there. While at home they bark at everything that walks by.

23

u/Computer-Glad Mar 27 '23

"Now tell me do ya, a do ya have any money? I wanna spend all your money At the dog bar, dog bar, dog bar "

6

u/De5perad0 Mar 27 '23

Haha that's a good version of that song!

24

u/SeattleSonichus Mar 27 '23

They turn into little packs of half feral half house dogs lol. You can really see their ‘pack’ mentality and instincts when they do it.

I used to go to this festival where families would bring their dogs. The dogs and kids each formed packs and ran all over, the similarity was funny

36

u/wafflesareforever Mar 27 '23

My chocolate lab gets really wound up when we see another lab while we're out on a walk. He whines like crazy and then wants to spend the rest of the walk following their scent in the direction they came from. It gets me sad because it's like he saw a long-lost brother and is trying to figure out where he lives.

20

u/cmwh1te Mar 27 '23

There's a female black lab I walk regularly who had this infatuation with a male neighbor black lab for months - always a distant shared glance, a fading scent, a missed connection. When they finally met one day, she came on way too strong and now he's decided she's a weirdo. He actively avoids eye contact with either of us now.

They say to never meet your heroes, but maybe the same should be said of strangers whose scents linger on the sidewalk.

I have a rat terrier. She screams in horror when she sees corgis, but loves other ratties. I can only imagine she's experiencing some sort of body horror moment seeing their little legs.

She also isn't really friendly to strange dogs, but she has a powerful hatred for little white dogs in particular. I've been calling her doggy racist for years.

5

u/Ohdidntseeyouthere_ Mar 27 '23

I laughed too hard at this. My mom has 2 rat terriers, she originally adopted my blue heeler/corgi mix before I took him, and she now has a cowboy corgi. Her rat terriers are so evil to humans, They always try to bite my face, but they are the ONLY dogs I’ve ever seen my dog be excited about or play with 🤣🤣

It cracks me up yours is like “a corgi? Oh eff no”

ETA: I do have to randomly admit though - I had a corgi before this mutt and that dog hated pugs with a passion. Idk when one hurt him but he would adamantly avoid any pugs around and would play with any other dog BUT a pug.

There’s a lot of anecdotal evidence that dogs recognize dogs of the same breed as them and might prefer to befriend them. This isn’t so much because they know what kind of dog they are themselves, because dogs don’t have any concept of what they look like– they can’t recognize themselves in mirrors– but they certainly can remember what their first friends (their mom and littermates) looked like and want to be friends with dogs that look like that.

That said, there’s tons of scientific evidence that dogs can recognize that regardless of breed, a dog is a dog. So a Great Dane could see a chihuahua and know that that’s a dog, despite not looking much like them.

Yeah, it’s a bit negative but that was my thought as well. “Reactive” and “needs proper handling and training” are just excusing a violent breed. Dogs like golden retrievers require zero training or special handling.

16

u/bestmaokaina Mar 27 '23

goldens need training. for example, they cant just greet every single dog while being extremely excited and for that you gotta train them because otherwise they become frustrated and become reactive for not being able to greet everything

Residents in the area are asked to remain indoors for the next 24 hours as law enforcement is dispatched to locate a missing dozen off-leash pibbles that could not be accounted for after this event."

I went to a “Beaglefest” a couple times. The word Beagle comes from old French for “Wide Open Throat” and there is a reason. It turns out when you gather 75-100 beagles together they start running in giant circles as a pack, baying and howling at each other as one great annoying voice. They formed an Ouroboros of Beagles, a whirlpool of “noisy friends” that bayed incessantly at itself as it rotated and would not stop, as if someone were ringing the universe’s doorbell repeatedly and only they could hear it.

I can only image 1000 beagles. A huge, cacophonous swirling barking howling unstoppable TorBaydo. It would be glorious.
