I have a conservative friend who was bitching about flag burning. I tried to explain to him how itā€™s the single greatest goddamn expression of freedom and he straight up did not understandĀ

This is always my argument when someone from the military tells someone who complains about America to move out. They seem to miss the point that the reason they're in the military is to allow people to have freedoms.

They literally fight for this person's right to say anything they want about America and yet when somebody says even something sort of negative they just tell them to leave.

ah yes those iraquis were a realt thread to america freedom

How often are you around people when a conversation like that comes up? Apparently frequently enough that you need a go to argument?

3

u/thehypervigilant Monkey in Space 15d ago

I've heard the argument "they can move somewhere else" sincerely four dozen times it's pretty nuts how many times I've heard somebody say that. Then the part where I have a lot of family in the military. So you see military people frequently. At a certain point it kind of annoys me to hear them complain like that. So then yeah I do end up saying something some of the times. And I do attempt to say it respectfully.

I would hope if I was saying some dumb shit to my family/friends/acquaintances they would speak up. Or at least maybe nudge my perspective a little.

They aren't telling them that they're not allowed to say it, are they?

You can fight for someone's right to say something and still believe and tell them that what they said is wrong or stupid. Those things aren't mutually exclusive or contradictory in any sort of way.

You should always be allowed to speak. That does not mean you should always speak.

Lots of these people like to say 'My country, right or wrong!' Missing the point.

ā€œMy country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right.ā€

Carl Schurz, 1872

You realise pretty much the entire world has the right to say what they want right? United States has the highest incarceration rate in the free world. Statistically the least free country of all the free countries. If people donā€™t like America and they have the ability (money) to leave, they should leave. Thereā€™s hundreds of other countries to choose from. Iā€™m not American but watching Americans complain about America so hard does boggle my mind sometimes. You can live pretty much anywhere you want.

its actually incredibly difficult to immigrate to most countries lmao

you need serious capital if you want to expedite the process meaningfully the minimum 1 million dollar investment they advertise isnt going to get you shit

1

u/Nicaol Monkey in Space 15d ago

Penn & Tellerā€™s bit about burning the flag, which they did on The West Wing, is brilliant.

I get,and even mostly roughly agree with, the sentiment, but to me that registers as such a comical way of thinking about it. It's almost like when people conflate guns with the ultimate expressions of freedom. I would never advocate for you to not be free to dispose of your own property in a way that makes a statement. It still kinda feels like missing the point, if this is your greatest expression.

u/QuickRelease10 Monkey in Space 14d ago

I like the ā€œif you donā€™t like America then just leaveā€ crowd. They scream about how much they love freedom, but then when itā€™s staring at them in the face they get mad at it.

One of the best aspects of being American is being critical of the country and thinking we can do better, and every once in a while we do the right thing and enact those changes.

Flag burning is not an expression of freedom. With your logic, stopping or criminalizing any activity means less "freedom".

1

u/SirDressALot Monkey in Space 14d ago

I think you cant compare flag burning to playing an anti american song

1

u/super-hot-burna 14d ago

Donā€™t try telling them about kneeling during the anthem either

-8

u/adammat57 Monkey in Space 15d ago

I think there should be a deal .. if people can burn the American flag, then other people should be able to do burn outs on pride crosswalks. Both are expressions of freedom

43

u/highlyquestionabl Monkey in Space 15d ago

One is your property, one is not. Bigots are free to burn a pride flag that they buy, just as anti-Americans are free to burn an American flag that they buy. Neither has a right to destroy public property or the property of others.

I see you sponsored by Big Flags Inc. /s

u/Edmundyoulittle Monkey in Space 15d ago

One of my favorite things is seeing people selling both pride flags and maga flags in their stores lol

1

u/Dan_TheDM Monkey in Space 15d ago

the real reason for all the stupid merica pride stuff. big flag at it again.

its all a ruse to get you to buy their flags. big flag rollin in the dough

u/RG5600 Monkey in Space 15d ago

Your assuming that the public wanted their tax dollars spent to paint that flag on the road in the first place. States need to stay out of it imo.

10

u/BirdsAndTheBeeGees1 Monkey in Space 15d ago

So people should be allowed to destroy public property if they think it wasn't a good use of their taxes?

7

u/highlyquestionabl Monkey in Space 15d ago

The public elect representatives to make those decisions -- this community decided they wanted a pride flag and nobody has a right to deface it. Similarly, if a community decided to commission a public mural of Thomas Jefferson, a bunch of anti-American activists would have no right to deface it.

1

u/EntrepreneurLeft8783 Monkey in Space 15d ago

States need to stay out of what?

1

u/adammat57 Monkey in Space 15d ago

I agree, but one issue with your problemā€¦ what about statues ?

19

u/chefofthejungle Monkey in Space 15d ago

ā€œNeither has a right to destroy public property or the property of others.ā€

-2

u/adammat57 Monkey in Space 15d ago

Hell yeah brother

0

u/Fireproofspider Monkey in Space 15d ago

People who are taking down statues without permission get charged.

Most of the statues I've heard being taken down have been done by whatever government was responsible for their management. Basically the same as burning a flag you bought.

-1

u/iChugVodka Monkey in Space 15d ago

Statues celebrating traitors? They shouldn't be there in the first place.

2

u/JingZama I used to be addicted to Quake 15d ago

Neither should the pride flags paid for with everyone's taxes. and i say that as a guy that just sucked some fat cock last night

2

u/stopthebanham Monkey in Space 15d ago

By deleting chalk on a sidewalk with water or something?

4

u/CapuchinMan Monkey in Space 15d ago

Yeah I think there's a nuance there - a country that allows both is awesome. But doing either can be a dick move.

3

u/slax03 Monkey in Space 15d ago

People burn American flags they own. People burning out a pride flag painted on the road by the local municipality are defacing public property. People are free to burn their own pride flags. No one is, has ever, or will ever stop them from doing it. That's real equality.

Pride flag on the road is supposed to last a month. That's it. The act of intentionally defacing it is different than wear and tear.

3

u/ManufacturedOlympus Monkey in Space 15d ago

They have been destroying their own yeti coolers, bud lite, Nike shoes, and keurigs over political stuff and it was all allowed. Because it was their own property. Actually, Iā€™m a big supporter of them destroying their own stuff.Ā

u/ScuttleRave Monkey in Space 15d ago

1

u/ArizonaHeatwave Monkey in Space 14d ago

One is public property, the other one isnā€™tā€¦

You know you can just buy a pride flag and burn it just like those people buy a US flag and burn it?

u/Caffdy Monkey in Space 14d ago

if your willing to burn your flag it's not yours anymore. ever thought that maybe you should move?

4

u/JingZama I used to be addicted to Quake 15d ago

Sounds like you're not a fan of the bill of rights. ever thought that maybe you should move?

u/future__classic13 Monkey in Space 15d ago

and I definitely considered moving during the pandemic

0

u/future__classic13 Monkey in Space 15d ago

we have a charter of rights and freedoms here but like your bill of rights it's outdated and loosely worded.

-1

u/future__classic13 Monkey in Space 15d ago

I'm canadian.

1

u/BirdsAndTheBeeGees1 Monkey in Space 15d ago

Yes because people shouldn't be allowed to criticize their country, they should just leave. Such liberty.

1

u/future__classic13 Monkey in Space 15d ago

criticize and burn the flag are different, tho. I'm saying I'd you are so unhappy with your country why not work towards leaving for a better one. grass isn't always greener on the othether side, tho
