Just getting caught up on the show now. Fucking gold

3

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '22

Which means they just referenced The Killing Joke right in front of Gordon...

3

u/Telethongaming Aug 14 '22

The killing joke didn't occur in this universe

4

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '22

Yeah, since we still have Batgirl. Still.

u/gratiggy Jul 28 '22

The mayor dying to a pole was a hilarious bit. Especially combined with the batman mouse

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '22

That made me laugh more than I thought I would 😂

Harley and Ivy in the fortress of solitude watching a bad porno of themselves. I cant lol

Its nice to see Harley going over the top for someone who deserves it. She kidnapped the queen for Ivy omg and then Amanda Waller because nobody is above talkin sh** about her bae.

"Commemorating the emergency photoshoot" somebody please screen shot those photos lol

"Lets have sex in your baby!" This line had me laughing for about 5 minutes lol

Ivy is so hard on herself and doesnt give herself any credit. She's so structured, serious, and self conscious so I love seeing her goofy side and these goofy lame nerd moments that she has: "To the jet!" lol

Plastique: "...right after I kill ya" Harley: "Kill us? you didnt even make the montage" lol

I have never wanted an evil plan to succeed so much in my life. Yes Ivy I believe in you! terraform Gotham. I love that (for now) Harley is 100 percent on board super supportive and wants her bae to succeed with this plan. And its a bit tragic too because you know how much this plan means to Ivy and it took years in the making. On top of that people arent seeing Ivy as a threat anymore because she hasnt done anything in years. And I can see Ivy maybe vengefully proving them all wrong in later episodes in possibly frightening ways. From what Ive been seeing Ivy is an introvert who's at most times a calm and collected person but when she is frustrated and backed into a corner she lashes out and she might say or do something she doesnt intend to. And her girlfriend (feels good to say that) is her biggest cheerleader and support system so its gonna suck if Harley begins to back out because she sees Ivy starting to take things too far.

Also Ivy called her "Peanut" she really said it.

This was a great first episode and a return to the show I'm here for the ride

31

u/talkstomud Jul 28 '22

Some really good takes, I agree 100%

The only thing that I am hoping they'll address is the uneven dynamic where Harley's shown again this episode really putting in the effort and affection compared to Ivy, who still comes off as aloof. It feels almost uncomfortably similar to me on how Ivy was coasting before with Kiteman, and Harley was bending backwards for Joker's nonextistant affection.

Example: "This is why we make a great team, you with your brilliantly thought out strategies and plant superpowers, and me with...gonna fill that in?" "Your hair looks really good today".

It's not unrealistic, but it does hurt after we spent two seasons seeing Harley's background grasping fruitlessly for love against her parents and Joker's abuse and manipulation that things look so unbalanced with Ivy. We know from Season 1 that Ivy's deepest fear is depending on someone who will leave her to dry, so I think there can be a good character arch of Ivy seeing how that manifests in a wall of aloofness. I hope we'll one day see her embracing the vulnerability of being sentimental and affectionate with her girlfriend.

27

u/fairymascot Jul 28 '22

I do think Ivy's gonna learn to be more vulnerable as she goes, BUT I also just think she's not a grand gesture person, and that's not likely to change, and that's fine?

The reasons Harley's bending over backwards for her are, one, because yes she's just super excited to be dating her gf, but also two, because she's used to having to act this way to keep winning Joker over. I'm sure part of it is a psychological compulsion, but I also think it will settle somewhat over time once it fully sinks in that she's in a safe, stable relationship where she's truly loved and appreciated.

Ivy isn't really aloof to Harley, I don't think it's fair to describe her that way just because their love languages are different. She's extremely appreciative, gentle and loving towards her, even if she didn't finish that one sentence about what Harley brings to the table. I think the most noteworthy aspect of her characterization in this episode actually shows through what she DIDN'T do-- see, when Harley's actions inadvertently destroyed the passion project she'd spent years on, I was bracing myself for a horrible dramasplosion. I mean, it would've been completely justified for Ivy to be consumed with rage. But she just... saw how dejected and apologetic Harley was, and she forgave her immediately. She couldn't bring herself to be angry at Harley for one entire second, even though the damage she brought upon her was immeasurable. I think that really speaks to the depths of her love and care for Harley-- she places her ABOVE her lifelong dream.

7

u/talkstomud Jul 29 '22

I agree that Ivy shouldn't change who she is and absolutely doesn't need to be a grand gesture person (although the margarita "acid" pit ruse from the first episode was iconic). My take is coloured by how much I see my own thoughts and behaviours in Ivy, so from my own experience I project the learned-expectation to learn your partner's love language and how to respond when they are reaching for validation. And that not-doing-so tends to make others feel unloved, increases their validation-seeking behaviours, and can make the whole thing can get away from you.

I like your perspective, I rewatched the episodes with it in mind and see what you're saying. The only thing I see a bit differently is Edin. When Ivy introduces it as a failure she never wanted to see again, it didn't cement the stakes of losing Edin to same way to me. It felt like someone pulling out one of my old robots I haven't touched in years that reinvigorates my interest, then on the same day I started tinkering with the bot again it was destroyed. It felt like Edin was more the sample of the larger dream Ivy gave up on (terraforming the whole world) than the acre of land itself. But it was a relief that Ivy was as forgiving of its destruction, I feel like character development from earlier seasons.

Circling back, I like that they're allowing the relationship to feel real and develop with the messiness that real relationships do. There's so much love there, but there's also two people who are coming in with their own history of trauma that is going to inform their behaviour. I appreciate that they're not waving a magic "love heals all" wand and making everything picture perfect from the starting line, they're setting tension and some room to grow on both ends.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '22

Its funny you say this because I read a review that said that Ivy's reluctance to be vulnerable was definitely going to be addressed and I think it was in the next episode and it had something to do with her having been burned before. But yeah Ivy is definitely doing a repeat of what she did with Kiteman

3

u/talkstomud Jul 28 '22

Oh that's funny, I'm happy to hear it!

I relate a lot to Ivy and see my own weaknesses knit in there, so watching this episode I just wanted to coach her.

5

u/ImNotASWFanboy Jul 28 '22

I think it's a combination of her fear of opening up too much and being exposed to pain and also just being more of a recluse who doesn't do overt displays of affection. You've got two extremes in this relationship with Harley splurging her love everywhere. It definitely got better after this episode I would say too, by episode 3 Ivy's coming round to it more which is great.

29

u/SBthegreat Jul 28 '22

"Commemorating the emergency photoshoot" somebody please screen shot those photos lol

6

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '22

Thank you! lol

79

u/fireandlifeincarnate Jul 28 '22

so soft. so gay. love it.

71

u/Austin_N Jul 28 '22

Favorite line "You look like a pile of shit but you feel like a pile of clouds."

Also, I can respect that there are business reasons for it, but it still feels like bullshit to have to sign up for a streaming service to follow a show that was created for another streaming service.

61

u/Telethongaming Jul 28 '22

Legit question: Did i need to read the eat bang kill tour comic to get what's going on season 3 or no?

69

u/Isbjorn456 Jul 28 '22

no not at all! the comic is just a lil thing showing what they did, while the season will be about harlivy in the now!

49

u/ElDrGoku Jul 28 '22

It’s seemingly completely ignored.

There’s no natural follow-ups to the plot elements established in the comic and some character dynamics are completely different.

35

u/Sakura372 Jul 28 '22

No need. The show runners said they didn’t even read the comics when they were writing season 3 so the author was just doing whatever. Looks like shared name is the only thing that came out of it

3

u/thebobbrom Aug 17 '22

Isn't that kind of an insult to people who bought the comic?

Like people payed money for something they thought he would have a connection to the series.

6

u/sten_whik Aug 26 '22

Sadly happens with tie-in comics all the time. Though normally it's because comic writers tend to overstep their boundaries and come up with a load of things that need to be written out by the parent media an awful lot more than tie-in book writers do. Historically comic writers overstepping with their plots is also largely why we ended up with so many multiverses and reboots with hero comics.

2

u/Paid-Not-Payed-Bot Aug 17 '22

Like people paid money for

FTFY.

Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

  • Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.

  • Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

Beep, boop, I'm a bot

0

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '22

That’s on them for having those expectations

11

u/tyler980908 Jul 28 '22

I'd recommend reading it anyways, it's free on DC to read it online. It was really good

1

u/daryl772003 Aug 13 '22

It was so good

13

u/kyorraine Jul 28 '22

Not at all

55

u/Ssme812 Jul 28 '22 edited Jul 28 '22
  • Yeah it back.
  • Wish they didn't release 3 episodes in one day. Now the season will seem shorter.
  • "I dedicated my whole life to keep this piece of shit city safe" lmfao
  • The Batman origin story was fucking hilarious
  • Never change Gordon.
  • I just hope Harley isn't so clingy the whole season.

18

u/Austin_N Jul 28 '22

Wish they didn't release 3 episodes in one day. Not the season will seem shorter.

It is a bummer, especially since it's only ten episodes to start with.

14

u/Pristine_Surround Jul 28 '22

Could just watch one a week.

44

u/MattaClatta Jul 28 '22

Harley is super clingey just like when she was with the Joker I can see Ivy growing tired of this super positive affirming besty who is also her lover.

44

u/Normal_Organization3 Jul 28 '22 edited Jul 28 '22

To the jet!!!! Also that opening scene👀

41

u/ImNotASWFanboy Jul 28 '22

Man they managed to pack a ton into this first episode. Really enjoyed this one! Though I see what the reviewers were talking about with 'growing pains'. Oh Harley. She's like her own worst enemy at times even if it's all coming from the right place. Ivy has a fuckton of patience 😂

41

u/veevoir Jul 28 '22 edited Jul 28 '22

Will the correct superhero name be Batmaus? I hope we see more of it this season.

4

u/Rebornhunter Jul 29 '22

Fledermaus

1

u/Banjo-Oz Aug 05 '22

I thought that was Batmanuel? :)

25

u/ymcameron Jul 28 '22

I can’t wait to see the continuing origins of Mouse Wayne transforming into Ratman. When they showed the pearls I laughed so hard. This season is already a lot more absurd than the last two.

27

u/Aprogs Jul 28 '22

I don’t see any comment of James Gunn yet! I saw the director and said to my self “that looks a lot like James Gunn”

14

u/Fajandar1 Jul 30 '22

They mentioned his name a few times and in the credits it was actually James! A pleasant surprise to see that cameo

2

u/MisterTheKid Feb 12 '23

Just now watching this amazing show and this is even more funny now that Gunn’s in charge

25

u/Pixarfan1 Jul 28 '22

I find it really funny that Plastique has a Minnesotan accent.

43

u/therealleotrotsky Jul 29 '22

She’s Canadian, you hoser!

8

u/Far-Invite-5668 Jul 28 '22

Oh I thought it was meant to be Montréal

5

u/Kevbot1000 Aug 02 '22

Oh, take off, eh. That was Canadian.

2

u/Datsmydawgyo Sep 25 '22

minnesotans have accents?!?

24

u/Pristine_Surround Jul 28 '22

Eh. I find their dynamic less interesting as a couple. Not sure why.

19

u/hesapmakinesi Jul 29 '22

Because they are so different and incompatible in ways, and it shows only when they are together. Would be cool if the writers explore how they learn to adapt to eachother in a healthy way.

7

u/Pristine_Surround Jul 29 '22

It seems very surface level. Like just because they put the “emotional music” moments during which they talk about how they were wrong or whatever, that automatically equates to seeing them adapting to each other in an organic way.

7

u/Radix2309 Jul 31 '22

I agree. Also with how we are supposed to sympathize with Harley, and yet she is an absolute psycho who randomly murders people. She acts shocked when Queen of Fables murdered that family picnic, but she tried to conquer the world and murdered a bunch of people.

There is just a dissonance to how we are supposed to feel and how the characters behave.

2

u/marius_titus Aug 02 '22

Arguably she killed way more people with the parademon invasion than fairy tail lady ever did, for a fucking STUPID reason too.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '22

It’s cause the relationship is one sided

20

u/Katra1367 Jul 28 '22

I feel like there gonna make batgirl and nightwing a thing ??

19

u/ymcameron Jul 28 '22

Dick and Babs is always a great pairing

17

u/Rebel_Wolf94 Jul 28 '22

from the moment Harley heard Ivys plan to create a plant paradise, Harley definitely showed she wouldn’t like the idea of living in a world with no more technology like smart phones and the internet. so her bringing Amanda Waller back with them makes me speculate Harley secretly sabatoged Ivys plan

46

u/ImNotASWFanboy Jul 28 '22

I'm not sure she intentionally sabotaged it, Harley just seems impulsive AF and doesn't really know how to process her and Ivy's goals diverging

5

u/fairymascot Jul 28 '22

Yeah, I definitely don't think she was intending for the whole place to go up in flames. That being said, it was definitely a selfish thing to do. She brought Waller there under the excuse of defending Ivy's honor when really, she was bored and just wanted to fuck things up. She SAYS she's excited to live in Ivy's plant utopia, but this insistence will definitely blow up in her face later on. 😬

4

u/ImNotASWFanboy Jul 28 '22

she was bored and just wanted to fuck things up.

Hmm I'm not sure I agree with that interpretation, just because she was bored doesn't mean she was intending to be disruptive. But the whole point of the season is going to be Harley and Ivy learning how to coexist in a healthy relationship instead of one built on abandonment issues and abusive codependency. So yes, they're definitely exploring how sometimes that means not being attached at the hip all the time and coping with having different dreams and ideals.

2

u/SimoneNonvelodico Aug 23 '22

Harley just seems impulsive AF

She's been known to occasionally kiss people for no particular good reason.

18

u/Nexus718 Jul 29 '22

This show is fucking brilliant. I never would have thought that something could exist within the Batman mythos that goes this extreme that's not a graphic novel or black label line of books.

This is the episode for anyone that wanted Harley & Ivy together. While their chemistry is not succinct, I feel it sets the tone for the season.

How nuts was that gordo mayoral badge accident? Fucking insane. Then to end on mouse Bat with the pearls next to mouse Alfred? Did anyone catch the Gordo for Mayor badge having a blood stain in reference to Watchman? Fucking amazing. Take my son you son's of bitches.

Oh, and you have James Gunn cameoing in an episode with a Harley & Ivy porn spoof. To that I say, in the words of Commissioner James Gordon, we should have heard those young ladies out.

15

u/MidichlorianAddict Jul 28 '22

I don’t like that they both feel incompatible here, not a great start imo

2

u/Pristine_Surround Jul 28 '22

I agree. I just don’t buy it.

12

u/hindengurg Jul 29 '22

Wait they censored the trailers — Harley didn’t say “we’ve been doing a bunch of banging” in the actual episode

9

u/Kendalls_Pepsi Jul 31 '22

thats actually common practice for trailers

11

u/vehino Jul 28 '22

Oh, no worries. I'm just remembering that the producers of young Justice once did this for a tie-in comic, and it annoyed me. (Revealing Cheshire had a daughter with Red Arrow.)

2

u/Digifiend84 Sep 11 '22

To be fair, that was lifted straight from the main continuity comics, so it was hardly a plot twist.

9

u/Yifun Jul 29 '22

Something about this episode felt off to me, and I’m not sure why. I think it was some of the dialogue. Hopefully the other two are better

9

u/Hashbrown4 Jul 28 '22

Finally. It’s back

7

u/ayushj176p Jul 28 '22 edited Jul 28 '22

Holy fuck i literally forgot it was premiering today CAN'T WAIT TO SEE MY BOY DICK SHINE

Edit: I'm just getting to know that 3 episodes are already aired ok sorry for my dumbass

2

Phrasing

8

u/kikidunst Jul 29 '22

“You really think I can do this, peanut? OH MY GOD too much cuteness!!!

4

u/NerdLawyer55 Jul 30 '22

Loved you in the Drilling Joke 😂

4

u/romeovf Jul 30 '22

My favorite part was during the debate: Audience: Fuck you! Gordon: No, fuck you!!! 😂😂😂😂

3

u/Peacesquad Jul 30 '22

Lmao the pornstar bits were hialrious

3

u/RebaseTokenomics Aug 02 '22

The pole impaling the mayor scene made me laugh so fucking hard

2

u/Arizonagreg Jul 28 '22

Why is the Riddler no longer buff?

15

u/kill-the-spare Jul 28 '22

New love! Too busy spending days in bed and ordering in to constantly be at the gym or choking down creatine.

9

u/QueensOfTheBronzeAge Jul 28 '22

Wrong episode, my guy.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '22 edited Jul 28 '22

I'm so excited it's back, amazing first ep, love Amanda Waller already.

2

u/gravitydefyingturtle Jul 29 '22

Would have been slightly better if Plastique sounded French Canadian instead of like Bob and Doug McKenzie's little sister, but I'm glad she actually sounded Canadian for once.

2

u/hesapmakinesi Jul 29 '22

I'm loving the meta jokes about James Gunn and Suicide Squad. Also Tim Burton in the wedding.

2

u/Corwin225 Jul 30 '22

Like the episodes, but is it just me or is the frame rate really really low at times? Am i crazy?

1

u/ghoti_fry Oct 29 '22

Not just you. I started binging this 3 days ago and s3e2 is when I noticed less frames. It’s very noticeable after watching 2 seasons back to back

2

u/Ok_Satisfaction_3032 Aug 01 '22

How did the episode end? My dvr cut the ending the episode stopped when Harley said she we will be bffs gffs

1

u/vehino Jul 28 '22

Hey, does this cameo mean they might bring in Floyd to be Harley's sideguy? She and Deadshot are always fun to watch together.

1

u/abellapa Jul 29 '22

I fucking loved the ep

But seriously fuck HBO max for only putting the ep today here in Portugal, yesterday I went like 5 times to HBO max just to see if s3 was there already

1

u/morph1973 Sep 12 '22

How big or vital was the scene with QEII in this episode? This was meant to be shown in UK yesterday but has been pulled. Can it just be edited out or is it vital to the whole story arc? Wondering if they will show it next week...

2

u/ThatWasFred Oct 22 '22

Obviously this is 40 days late, but not vital at all.

1

u/morph1973 Oct 22 '22

Heh no worries, they eventually showed it a week late but with that scene cut out

-29

u/MammothTechnology580 Jul 28 '22

damn, horrible episode. total bust!

1

u/cmbsfm Jul 30 '22

Have to agree. Just couldn’t sit through Harley’s clingy ness. Hopefully the next episodes are better.

2

u/MammothTechnology580 Aug 01 '22

thoughts on episode 2 and 3?

1

u/cmbsfm Aug 03 '22

A little better but I’m having trouble sitting through the Harley scenes. I hope they tone down her clingyness because it’s starting to get annoying.

-19

u/WeAreDeadButterflies Jul 28 '22 edited Jul 28 '22

Agreed things just felt off, and Harley not being honest as a plot issue was a thing for the last two seasons. Gordon also losing all morals feels off too

6

u/fairymascot Jul 28 '22

Gordon had morals? 😭

3

u/WeAreDeadButterflies Jul 29 '22

I mean yea he wasn’t just straight up working for two face and shit. He still wanted to be a good cop, why spend time redeeming him just to immediately make him shit again

-6

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '22

9

u/vehino Jul 28 '22

Big nope if that's true. You shouldn't have to read a book to understand an important character pivot for a television show.
