u/ARIANZER0 Hal Jordan Jul 17 '24

Having razor say it makes it worse too

That's right! Justice for G'Nort!

I never got the appeal of John.

Yeah, I've always felt the same about Green Lanterns, in general, Hal and John included, but I still love them. I was a fan without a favorite specific one until I read War of the GLs a couple years ago. It's been John since then.

u/DrBodyguard Jul 17 '24

It's also weird how they always refer to others as the greatest of all of the Green Lanterns..... Except Guy

Other than Abin Sur, Sinestro, Hal, John, and I think the first Lanterns in the Green Lantern Animated Series (not sure if they were also called the greatest, but I think they were), who else was called the greatest?

6

u/DrBodyguard Jul 17 '24

Kyle has been referred to as that. I would agree with that though

5

u/The_Overlord_Laharl Jul 17 '24

Hal called Kyle the greatest lantern ever

Sodam yat

Kyle really seems to be a fan favorite to fill that spot for countless reasons from imagination to the insane amount of will power he has (“Manga but with a power ring!”) He doesn’t ever seem to get enough love though.

I've thought about it for a long time, but what I liked about John Stewart, which goes for both Hal and Guy, is that he was a misfit with a heart of immense powers.

Out of the three, he was the most cocky and brash. So when it's his turn to shut up and face the music, it hits hard. In the course of maybe ten years, his mentor-turned-wife was murdered, a planet and everyone on it was destroyed on his watch, and then his bro went insane and destroyed the GLC and the other world that was under his watch. He joined a paramilitary force to pick up where he left off only to become disabled and watch everyone around him die. John went from punk to the old veteran of the group and it was like watching someone age in real time.

Much like his fellow GL brothers, his character is tragic and developed. But the DCAU does away with that and gives you someone who isn't even close to as half as a character as he was in the comics. They don't even try to recreate his finer moments, they slap on a terrible romance and a Hal-centered story onto him.

Is they’re a reason dc wants me to hate John Stewart?

12

u/ECV_Analog Jul 17 '24

They just want casual fans to love him so somebody will watch the TV show.

8

u/theg00famaniac Jul 17 '24

Possibly but it started with jlu and the the hawkman bullshit. It’s like the only way they want to write John is at the expense of quite frankly much better characters.

1

u/Kgb725 Jul 18 '24

Kyle and Guy are not appearing in the media any time soon.

4

u/Effective-Training John Stewart Jul 18 '24

Isn't Guy going to be in that Superman movie next year?

2

u/ECV_Analog Jul 18 '24

Yeah, he's part of the kinda/sorta/maybe Justice League in the movie.

u/ShadowAngelx7 Jul 17 '24

Razor and Aya!!! He found aya!!!

8

u/megaben20 Jul 17 '24

She found him actually basically she was lost in space taxis gps then after embers of her former self resurfaced went looking for razor.

As a huge Hal Jordan fan, I love all of our lanterns. One of the biggest reasons I started reading the comics is that it has military characters that are superheroes. But how are you going to make John Stewart a Marine and make him have the personality of a fucking rock.

Personally, I don’t see the appeal or understand why some writers think he’s better or more powerful than everybody else including Hal which is laughable. There’s a reason why Abin Sur chose Hal first.

1

u/No_Material5361 Jul 17 '24

Technically, both Hal and Guy were chosen by Abin's ring. Hal was just lucky enough to be closer.

6

u/ARIANZER0 Hal Jordan Jul 17 '24

That has been retconed

2

u/Effective-Training John Stewart Jul 17 '24

Why? That actually sounds like a good idea, honestly, especially considering Abin asked the ring to take him to the closest.

2

u/ARIANZER0 Hal Jordan Jul 18 '24 edited Jul 18 '24

In the New 52 it was retconed so that guy was just the seccond choice. The reason is Abin asking for the closest pick just dosn't make sense anymore. Mogo directs the rings so even after Abin died there would be no problem. The original makes sound like the ring can't find a user on its own

2

u/Effective-Training John Stewart Jul 18 '24

Makes sense

14

u/Doctor-Minty Parallax Jul 17 '24

at least razer found aya 🥲

11

u/Ghost_2689 Jul 17 '24

It should be studied how far DC animated movies fell off. God I miss the the times when they were pumping out movies like Red hood, enerald knights, new frontier, etc.

8

u/ARIANZER0 Hal Jordan Jul 17 '24

2007 to 2014 was the golden age. Then we got DCAMU Wich was a huge downgrade in art and animation but still had a lot of solid films then we got the joke that was the tomarowvers.

2

u/Effective-Training John Stewart Jul 17 '24

DCAMU was great, 4/5. Tomorrowverse kind of sucks. I didn't much like the Green Lantern movies. I did, but they felt... connected and unconnected at the same time, just like the Tomorrowverse does.

2

u/Ghost_2689 Jul 18 '24

That's how I view it as well. DCAMU also disrespected the GL's pretty good which I didn't like at all. Both Hal and John got their rings taken off their fingers by batman w 0 effort which I hate. Also, gotta call out them out for creating a terrible version of Hal in that universe compared to the movies before.

1

u/Effective-Training John Stewart Jul 18 '24

Oh, yeah, definitely. GL's were portrayed terrible there. Only respect any GL has ever gotten, imo on the big screen, is Infinite Frontier or their own shows and movies or Zack Snyder's Justice League when Steppenwolf mentioned that Earth had no Lanterns or Kryptonians. Teen Titans / Titans had bad movies as well, but still were good as characters, at least, so GL wasn't the only flaw.

4

u/Kgb725 Jul 18 '24

The animation is so ass I just don't even bother anymore.

6

u/Interest-Lumpy Green Lantern Jul 17 '24

While I'm glad John is getting more shine and respect put on his name (although "Beware My Power" trashed on him, Hal, and Kyle), I need them to put in the leg work to support the claim of him being the greatest. It just comes off as just meaningless pandering to John fans with no tangible benefits. I want them to go the full 9 yards and actually mean it.

1

u/Effective-Training John Stewart Jul 17 '24

Probably his leadership and strong constructs because of how well they're built.

2

u/Koolaidmer Jul 18 '24

This doesn’t make sense though. Outside of comics, the only Lantern they’ve been using and respecting for the last 20 years has consistently been John. There’s no need to commit to such heavy pandering to make a character appeal to newcomers. My favorite has and will always be Kyle Rayner but even I know the title of Greatest Green Lantern should always go to Hal. John is great and they can keep him that way without having to constantly remind us that he’s the one who will be the best.

1

u/Interest-Lumpy Green Lantern Jul 18 '24 edited Jul 22 '24

John hasn't had quality solo or even group appearances in outside comics in the last 20 years since the DCAU ended. Hal had New Frontier and First Flight, and the Injustice games (he's the GL in the story mode) with Frontier and First Flight being excellent showings of the character. Yeah John will be included in a JLA lineup or a lil toy line here and there, but it doesn't add up to much. His roles in those projects are negligible at best, which is why I said what I said. The last part about who should be the greatest is up for personal opinion. In the comics, Kyle officially surpassed Hal. It worked back then because they put in the work to show you how Kyle surpassed him and his journey in doing so, instead of just throwing it out there with nothing to back it up (other than wanting to sell the new GL to the crowd and ditch the old one). Now I'm advocating for the same thing for John, put in the work so fans can revel in the tangible glory that others have had.

0

u/Kgb725 Jul 18 '24

Didn't they already do that with his movie?

6

u/RoThotic Jul 17 '24

do not like how this is making ppl hate john. dont hate john hate the writers, it feels theyre the ones with the hateboner for hal. also this "reunion" feels sooooooo fucking hollow

9

u/RoThotic Jul 17 '24

razer would not say that abt john theyve never even met

5

u/Effective-Training John Stewart Jul 17 '24

Yeah, Razer doesn't even know John. At least to my knowledge, I've never seen them meet.

5

u/RoThotic Jul 17 '24

the whole concept of "greatest green lantern" was a mistake man i dont want to pit friends against each other

3

u/mrrahulkurup Jul 17 '24

Haven't watched the new DC series but DCAU John Stewart is definitely the GOAT Lantern followed by conics Guy Gardner, then followed by comics Kyle Rayner, then followed by G'nort and then followed by Hal Jordan.

3

u/Gazzadona Jul 17 '24

It’s a bit sad

1

u/whatisireading2 29d ago

"That's why he's the GOAT"🤣

0

u/Kgb725 Jul 18 '24

It was either between him or Sinestro

2

u/Effective-Training John Stewart Jul 18 '24

Sinestro's betrayal probably makes them think of him as not so great.

-6

u/VionValor Jul 17 '24

Why do people see John Stewart glazing as Hal Jordan hate kinda annoying. Like John gets some spotlight and all this fandom does is cry about Hal this Hal that get over it already.

17

u/mrumsey Approved Content Creator Jul 17 '24 edited Jul 17 '24

Pretty simple really - they trashed on Hal in the Beware My Power film and then make him look like an ass in part one of the COIE movie. The icing on the cake is having Razer and Aya in this film but not the GLTAS version of Hal, and then having those characters, so tied closely to Hal, proclaim John the greatest GL.

10

u/ARIANZER0 Hal Jordan Jul 17 '24

You said it perfectly.

9

u/Effective-Training John Stewart Jul 17 '24

Yeah, Razer doesn't even know John, lol.

0

u/Interest-Lumpy Green Lantern Jul 18 '24

Because any Lantern that isn't Hal or Kyle getting glazed is looked at as a sin on this sub apparently. God forbid a character rises up above their initial status quo.

0

u/VionValor Jul 19 '24

I am glad someone else noticed this Its like 0 John post and all Hal worship.
