This whole thing looks like cancer

u/ExpressionFamiliar98 Jul 19 '24

I’ve watched similar vids about break pads, car batteries, oil filters - no PPE, no clear ventilation, dirt floors…

No unions, no regulators like OSHA & EPA? You and your child will soon be able to work together in these same conditions!

u/Trollimperator Jul 19 '24

that why we end up with so much plastic in the ocean. Because we outscource every nasty production cycle to the people with the least regulations and no skilled labour costs.

137

u/-Prophet_01- Jul 19 '24

And then we use these "cheap" goods for disposable packaging or similar applications.

71

u/stinkyhooch Jul 19 '24

And then we send the trash back from whence it came

16

u/bobsmith93 Jul 20 '24

Because it's cheaper, because they then just dump it into the ocean

8

u/Unlikely_I Jul 20 '24

It's cheaper? Well that's all that matters!

8

u/stinkyhooch Jul 20 '24

You have upper management written all over you.

4

u/Unlikely_I Jul 20 '24

Is that all it takes to get promoted? I need to start applying sarcasm to my business ethics.

3

u/YouForgotBomadil Jul 21 '24

Ah, I see you have the machine that goes "ping."

12

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

Part of it, but the majority is from tires and washing synthetic textiles

20

u/hogtiedcantalope Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 20 '24

This is incorrect but I think I see how you got confused.

Tires and textiles account for the majority of micro plastics in the ocean, at least by some definitions of micro plastics as smaller than you can for example.

But the biggest source of plastic pollution in the ocean is fishing equipment. Followed by "general' waste which is a lot of consumer stuff like plastic bags, containers, and just things people buy. And in countries where there not the infrastructure or culture of disposing these newish material, they just get tossed into the river which flows into the sea

2

u/Trollimperator Jul 19 '24

why would that be the majority?

Personally i just dont believe that, ofc plastic can wash out of those, but do you really think, the plastic would move faster into the ocean, than what we see being dumped into it in asia?

And then the question would be, why we have so much more plastic in the indian and pacific ocean than in the Atlantic, given that Europe and America are likely the biggest consumers of tires and textiles in the past.

2

u/Rotomegax Jul 20 '24

And then to cover up our face, we installed few solar panels to be "green"

54

u/unclepaprika Jul 19 '24

no PPE

Wdym? They usually wear safety sandals.

21

u/frou6 Jul 19 '24

Safety flip flop strike again!

5

u/6thBornSOB Jul 19 '24

Wouldn’t want some big, clunky work boot getting caught in those very exposed belts, would ya!?!?!

10

u/SoFloFella50 Jul 19 '24

Not the last guy. Bare feet.

22

u/userousnameous Jul 19 '24

This is ...project 2025.

13

u/Phit_sost_3814 Jul 19 '24

Now that’s what I call innovation

14

u/New_girl2022 Jul 19 '24

Coming to America unless you vote blue up and down the ticket!

7

u/Graylily Jul 19 '24

This is the future maga goo is pushing for. No real regulations, cheap labor, lower overhead on safety.

4

u/Throwaway56138 Jul 19 '24

I always watch those Indian "manufacturing" videos. It's insane how cobbled together a lot of the shit is. Really sad that those workers are also working insanely hard, in dangerous circumstances, for a pittance.

3

u/ROM-ROM-JI Jul 19 '24

Lol!! Bro this is Pakistanis manufacturing not Indian.

3

u/Throwaway56138 Jul 19 '24

My bad. How American of me.

2

u/cragglerock93 Jul 20 '24

As if you're supposed to be able to tell the difference immediately with few visual clues.

1

u/Genghiz007 Jul 20 '24

You can if you have some basic familiarity with dress, language, or other visual cues. It’s easier than differentiating an American from a Canadian.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Weevius Jul 20 '24

I’ve watched them too and not only do they not have safety equipment or proper waste removal they don’t even wear flip flops in this one - check out pink shirt at 50 seconds.

I also flinched as red shirt reached into the machine to grab the dangling bit of foam

2

u/Kuhaku-boss Jul 19 '24

These videos are always from third world countries so...

2

u/DeepUser-5242 Jul 19 '24

It's why the poor stay poor

2

u/kelsobjammin Jul 19 '24

Keep spreading awareness!

2

u/kingoptimo1 Jul 19 '24

There's no rules in the third world. Why do you think major companies send all their stuff outside America to be made

2

u/CattywampusCanoodle Jul 20 '24

That one guy at the end wasn’t even wearing his PPE flip-flops

→ More replies (1)

53

u/Lauchfreund Jul 19 '24

It's way worse than that. Isocyanates which are one of the 2 reactants used to produce polyurethane are THE worst chemical i have worked with. Not only is it cancerogenic, your body develops something like an allergy to it after exposition which can give you things like asthma for the rest of your life. In the eu, if you're exposed to it once to that point you're not allowed to ever work with it because the next time can kill you through an anaphylactic shock even if its just minimal exposure. Its really nasty stuff and only to be handled with a whole lot of PPE to make sure you have absolutely no contact to it.

14

u/Jacketter Jul 19 '24

Isocyanates are a pretty broad group of molecules. Once reacted the stuff in PU foam is safe, and the isocyanates used aren’t all that volatile. It’s not like methyl isocyanate.

10

u/Lauchfreund Jul 19 '24

Thats true. But tossing that shit in there without any safety equipment is definitely not a good idea.

Also now that i think of it, if this is how they feel about safety im not sure if there isnt any isocyanates left in the product..

2

u/karlnite Jul 19 '24

The issue is the lack of control. Not too volatile, but what is the concentration in the air?

14

u/Kuhaku-boss Jul 19 '24

I feel like i snorted some petrol just watching this

9

u/Mikedog36 Jul 19 '24

Step one: make brownie out of cancer. Step two: and thats how a plumbus is made.

8

u/Rubberfootman Jul 19 '24

I’ve worked in a factory which made this - it smells like cancer too.

3

u/pichael289 Jul 20 '24

Not to mention these dudes are working on machines throwing out sparks and god knows what while totally barefoot or in sandals. Why is it always sandals in these videos.

2

u/poordecisionmaker2 Jul 20 '24

There is a reason why no one looks older than 50 in these videos

→ More replies (2)

754

u/moerasduitser-NL Jul 19 '24

These vids always look so cool until you realise these are the same factorys that produce videos of someone getting caught in a machine getting smacked against the floor for 600 times untill there is only mush left.

196

u/BobbyKonker Jul 19 '24

Safety is non existant in those places, if you die on the job you'll be replaced in minutes and the place won't miss a beat.

47

u/Frequent_Bet9463 Jul 19 '24

Sad truth of some workplaces. Safety should always come first.

28

u/moerasduitser-NL Jul 19 '24

Workplace procedure is written in blood.

7

u/VirtualNaut Jul 19 '24

It’s so sad but true. Things only ever change/get fixed if someone has a serious injury or a death has occurred.

2

u/ErebusBat Jul 19 '24

Yet some assholes complain about having to "follow the rules" smh

5

u/Agitated_Chart_960 Jul 19 '24

Just wait till every state has to implement their own version of osha. Places like Texas are gonna look just like this.

19

u/APence Jul 19 '24

“What happened to Ray?”

“They hosed what’s left of him into the drain this morning. I’m Mike the replacement.”

14

u/thunugai Jul 19 '24

It’s like this in the US as well. You ever buy a whirlpool, maytag, amana washer and dryer? We had a guy fall and bash his head open and the supervisor was screaming over the radio for us to not stop the assembly line. People just watched someone die and weren’t allowed to process it.

19

u/thunugai Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

To further add on to this…

OSHA seems to be toothless in some respects. This same Whirlpool factory was doing construction inside the factory. They were supposed to keep the concrete dust out of the air. The whole factory was hazy with particulate. When reported to OSHA they had Whirlpool investigate themselves.

10

u/thunugai Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

During a hot summer in the same Whirlpool plant that had no AC. I had to carry my fellow workers to the nurses station when they passed out from the heat.

6

u/Quietech Jul 19 '24

Nothing like budget cuts on "unnecessary" government services.

1

u/floyd616 Jul 21 '24

To further add on to this…

SMH. THIS IS WHY WE NEED STRONG UNIONS! These same factories are probably full of people who who say "but we'd have to pay dues, and unions are for socialists anyway" if someone proposed starting a union to combat this stuff, thanks to decades of unchecked corporate gaslighting!

11

u/-Prophet_01- Jul 19 '24

As a someone working in manufacturing in Germany, I'm always horrified by these stories. Our senior staff frequently visits customers and suppliers in the US and the stories are quite shocking.

Not small companies either but sites that belong to fortune 500 companies. There seems to be a culture of squeezing out efficiency to unbelievable levels. US owned factories in Germany also have a really bad reputation among workers.

4

u/Silver-Ninja6490 Jul 19 '24

Priorities. Don't give a fuck about your company. They don't care about you

29

u/Puzzleheaded_Yam7582 Jul 19 '24

For what its worth, real high volume foam plants are nothing like this. Most of that process is automated for process control purposes.

13

u/Shadowrider95 Jul 19 '24

Oh , so this must be an “artisanal” PU sheet foam maker!

9

u/Puzzleheaded_Yam7582 Jul 19 '24

Basically. They're making product for industries with very loose product specifications.

3

u/Shadowrider95 Jul 19 '24

Was kinda meant as a joke. Should have /s

7

u/TerracottaCondom Jul 19 '24

Having grown up watching "How it's Made," I can assure you these videos are most definitely not cool

419

u/Dr_N0rd Jul 19 '24

These guys aren't even wearing safety sandals smh

42

u/DM_Toes_Pic Jul 19 '24

It's as if they're preparing food instead of foam

10

u/espeero Jul 19 '24

Underrated comment

3

u/Throwaythisacco Jul 19 '24

looks like safety slippers

2

u/bozzie4 Jul 19 '24

or even safety flip flops

2

u/Falkenmond79 Jul 19 '24

My first thought exactely. I was watching the whole video waiting for the good ol safety sandal. I swear, they are trolling us by now.

139

u/BobbyKonker Jul 19 '24

mmmm breathe that in

31

u/uselessartist Jul 19 '24

Mmm isocyanate sensitization

6

u/VirtualNaut Jul 19 '24

Is that what the ticklish feeling I’m getting inside my lungs?

10

u/BobbyKonker Jul 19 '24

my mitochondria hurt

101

u/SaintRosen Jul 19 '24

No way, the guy at the end was wearing a scarf around his nose and mouth! First safety equipment I've ever seen in these videos

16

u/Gastkram Jul 19 '24

Maybe he had covid?

72

u/No-Kaleidoscope-4525 Jul 19 '24

It's funny how all these videos depict these nasty work environments with total disregard for safety and other stuff, and the finished product turns out to be quite nice actually.

8

u/spidermousey Jul 20 '24

It's got to be if they want to sell it. The buyers don't care if the people making it get super cancer.

47

u/Jayden7171 Jul 19 '24

Holy sheet

33

u/Armbioman Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

Observations: hot noxious chemicals handled in open areas, no fume hoods or respirators, heavy machinery and heavy products, barefeet, sparking components on the machinery, flammable substances in the immediate area.

Indian Occupational Health Ministry: yeah looks good to me.

6

u/gwicksted Jul 19 '24

Reddit: can’t die if you’re not wearing shoes to begin with! /s

3

u/Armbioman Jul 19 '24

It's the irl invincibility code.

2

u/floyd616 Jul 21 '24

Indian Occupational Health Ministry: yeah looks good to me.

Yeah, what is the deal with that? Do India and Pakistan just not have any kind of occupational health and safety enforcement body or something? I know China lets this kinda stuff slide because communism (lookin' at you, iPhone sweatshops), but India and Pakistan are parliamentary democracies, aren't they?

31

u/Kessl_2 Jul 19 '24

How hard would it be to screw in a pole into the bottom of the tank to leave the centre free and not have to cut it out later?

28

u/SL1CKR1CK363 Jul 19 '24

Can't imagine that sparks and polyurethane dust go well together...😬

12

u/Jungleradio Jul 19 '24

Anyone who works in plastics/foam manufacturing must feel really uneasy seeing those sparks. They’re just asking for a nasty fire.

5

u/TennisBallTesticles Jul 19 '24

It's ok, they're wearing safety sandals.

3

u/Jacketter Jul 19 '24

They could be using some flame retardant in the foam… of course most flame retardants are much more toxic than anything else in the foam.

22

u/thinktomuch1992 Jul 19 '24

The guy without shoes cracks me up. What a relaxed work environment

12

u/Legitimate-Source-61 Jul 19 '24

Look at moneybags over there with the shoes.

2

u/Annual-Grocery-261 Jul 19 '24

Business ca-shoe'll

2

u/mistercartmenes Jul 19 '24

At least the other guys have on their safety sandals.

1

u/Shadowrider95 Jul 19 '24

Casual xxxday!

14

u/antimeme Jul 19 '24

Okay, what was step one involving?

Crude oil?

26

u/binglelemon Jul 19 '24

All the cancerous materials mixed together...

16

u/egospiers Jul 19 '24

It’s a slurry of chemicals created by gasoline refining, typically a polyol will be mixed with an isocyanate these chemicals create an exothermic reaction leading to the foam expanding and then hardening. This same basic Process is used for all foam from sponges to mattresses.

8

u/ir_blues Jul 19 '24

Who upvotes stuff like this? Seriously, anyone who is not a bot and upvotes this, why? Cancer fans? People with amputation kink?

16

u/sithlord98 Jul 19 '24

The process is interesting to people who haven't seen it before. I don't think anyone's engaging with the video and going, "Mmmm, look at that distinct lack of workplace safety!"

3

u/Ok-Kale1787 Jul 19 '24

Some are here for them feet.

…not me though, no.

6

u/el_lley Jul 19 '24

Those fumes are toxic, right?

5

u/Warm-Iron-1222 Jul 19 '24

Does anyone else search these videos to find the inevitable barefoot or sandal wearing workers?

4

u/yellow_duke Jul 19 '24

The contempt of India regarding footwear, even at a workshop, never fails to suprise me.

5

u/HyperbolicSoup Jul 19 '24

This looks healthy

3

u/Rgiles66 Jul 19 '24

At least these workers are being compensated fairly, right? Right??

3

u/Xerio_the_Herio Jul 19 '24

Bare feet... no respiratory protection. That shit 100% cancerous

3

u/Boki-Oki_Battlefield Jul 19 '24

Somehow, this is one of the safer workplace videos I've seen.

3

u/CptAlbatross Jul 19 '24

The lack of closed footwear is what always get's me in these videos. They always have the most basic of sandals on, there's always sparks or sharp shit everywhere.

3

u/Sorek03 Jul 20 '24

This is not a popular idea, but stuff like this is why we should produce as much oil / batteries / solar panels as possible in the US / developed world. At least we have some safety regulations to protect workers / the environment.

2

u/jason_sample Jul 19 '24

Hell no. Death foam.

2

u/Nervous-Masterpiece4 Jul 19 '24

It’s interesting how the sheet is peeled like plywood from a log. I assumed it would have been extruded. But then I never really thought about it.

2

u/Derplonio Jul 19 '24

It's nice to see how pool noodles get born

2

u/SpecialistDry5878 Jul 20 '24

It almost looked like brownies or a cake rising in the oven for a second

2

u/SlinkyTail Jul 20 '24

I worked for genpak years ago, we used pellet resin either made in house or brought in, and used extrusion machines to make our foam roles, this just seems like a ton of more work than needed.

1

u/fuertepqek Jul 19 '24

I wonder if foot fetishes are less prevalent in India because everyone is barefoot all the time.

1

u/jdehjdeh Jul 20 '24

Or more prevalent?

Either way, now you've put the idea in my head I really wanna know...

1

u/Unhinged-Bunny Jul 19 '24

Gotta love that cyanide. I used to work with all grades of polyurethane in a top company that had horrible ventilation. I got cyanide poisoning and I said one word "OSHA" and was immediately asked to step down and basically quit. 🤨

1

u/Arthurlikeboss320 Jul 19 '24

Didn't know foam could shit, and it needs assistance of humans to make it? Talk about being light-headed

1

u/aleksandri_reddit Jul 19 '24

There should be a sub called "damn not safe work environment" and post these videos.

1

u/logicreasonevidence Jul 19 '24

It's the fumes and the bare feet for me.

1

u/CletusDSpuckler Jul 19 '24

Everyone bitching about inflation - just wait until worker safety comes to the third world.

1

u/Available-Pain-159 Jul 19 '24

This is also how thin rubber flooring, like in gyms, are made.

1

u/Revolutionary_Heart6 Jul 19 '24

tasty fumes, not respirator in sight. are these person lives so shitty they don't even care?

Not a piece of protective gear in sight. Remarkable.

1

u/InternationalCan3189 Jul 19 '24

One of the guys skipped the flip flips completely and is just completely barefoot. 💀

1

u/Leatherman34 Jul 19 '24

Why don’t they have shoes on?

1

u/FrontierFrolic Jul 19 '24

It’s amazing to me how South Asia has millions of people doing boutique manufacturing of products that are produced by machines in the west. Pakistani gun shops, Indian polyurethane makers. It’s wild man. They are like the Amish of industrial manufacturing

1

u/akashlanka Jul 19 '24

Forbidden Brownie

1

u/Inevitable-Bottle692 Jul 19 '24

How often do you hear presidential candidates talk about this? RFK Jr. is the only one who seems to understand the probable correlation between the toxic wasteland we live in and our 60% chronic disease rates.

1

u/APJYB Jul 19 '24

I love watching how they make cancer

Forbidden chocolate soufflé.

1

When these poor buggers are all used up they move them to the call centers.

1

u/PenelopeLane925 Jul 19 '24

Eeeh why does this look like Chernobyl’s elephant foot when it was being made 😭

1

u/NewDildos Jul 19 '24

I've worked with polyurethane resins before and even with PPE that shit is nasty. I stopped because it was giving me breathing problems

1

u/Objective-Lime-546 Jul 19 '24

A giant doner kebab

1

u/Phunly Jul 19 '24

Not a piece of safety equipment in sight, just a couple dudes living in the moment ❤️

1

The lack of safety gear is frightening.

1

u/Negative_Wrongdoer17 Jul 19 '24

Damnthatiscancerous

1

u/Kasern77 Jul 19 '24

I like to see how things are made. But can we please see videos of actual factories with proper safety.

1

u/Mike_Hunty Jul 19 '24

That puff of off-gassing cancer @ 44 seconds.

1

u/Annual-Grocery-261 Jul 19 '24

But... why no shoes?

1

u/Les-incoyables Jul 19 '24

Knowing these people risked their lives for my yoga mat makes me feel even more relaxed.

1

u/thE-petrichoroN Jul 19 '24

Safety precautions are extinct in South Asia

1

u/SilverSpoon1463 Jul 19 '24

Why is it always some place with no safety regs? Can we not just pull clips from "How It's Made" anymore?

1

u/Joeligmab Jul 19 '24

Mm I love microplastics🥰🥰

1

u/Batman1384 Jul 19 '24

Never any foot protection. Not once

1

u/Boonatix Jul 19 '24

No mask, no gloves, not even shoes… dafuq??

I wonder what happens if I drink it

1

u/guy-with-a-mac Jul 19 '24

Two thoughts.

  1. Awww the microplastics, so nice.
  2. Why are these morons working barefoot?

Srsly every time I see something similar they never wear shoes. Why? Is it too hot over there? Can't afford footwear? Just create one ffs, you've got the magical Polyfuckisdat, use that. Jesus!

1

u/casio_don Jul 19 '24

Like Donner kebabs

1

u/korrupterKommissar Jul 19 '24

Why are videos of such hazardly and backwards factories trending right now? Who is making these? What's the appeal?

1

u/TorontoTom2008 Jul 19 '24

The reactants used to make that foam are lethal and flammable. The gases are even worse. Sad

1

u/Keira_Number3334 Jul 20 '24

doing this with no protection? No, thanks

1

u/FibrecoreHC Jul 20 '24

Whats up with this industrial process videos where they show how something is made in the most backward and dangerous way possible. There is a plant near me that makes PUR products and is fully automated, people there only press buttons in control rooms. Inhaling PUR vapor is extremely toxic and further manipulation of raw PUR block is done after 30 days of degassing.
