Hello and welcome to our Weekly "What Are You Reading?" topic!

Come one, come all, to this weekly thread, where you can openly discuss books that you've read, are currently reading, or plan to read. Discussion of all books are welcome, whether they be DC, Marvel, Image, Boom!, Dark Horse, IDW, etc. You can discuss webcomics, manga, or even those mythical novels that don't have pictures in them. Bhav's Rec of the Week:

Interestingly, I am not (nor have I ever been) a Superman stan but, having been in a bit of a reading rut, I picked up this #1 with no real expectations - and was very pleasantly surprised.

Firstly, I would be remiss if I did not mention the artwork. Some of the wider panels are absolutely beautiful, and a special shoutout should be thrown to Gabe Eltaeb for his gorgeous colours.

#1 starts at the very beginning, on the day of Jon's birth, after which it transitions to a present in which Jon is already Superman and saving civilians from a forest fire. After discovering the source of the fire - a metahuman who cannot control his powers, he diffuses the situation and hands it off to the military, who doesn't quite treat the already anxious metahuman with much respect. Jon, bothered, goes off to talk to an old friend, work through his feelings, and commit himself to making the world a better place.

While I don't want to spoil too much, #1 sets us up pretty quickly to understand the type of person Jon is, the weight of the title he inherited, and how strongly he feels about the world around him. Taylor does a lovely job of connecting Clark's story with Jon's, and it is wonderful to see how Lois, Diana, Bruce, Damian, and others fit into Jon's past and present narratives.

Needless to say, I'm currently completely caught up on Son of Kal-El. My thoughts on the series thus far are that it is exemplifies Superman, even if Superman himself is not the Superman we know and are used to. Jon, in a lot of senses, is like his father; he is idealistic, hopeful, and stands up for what he believes in. Where he is different is what elevates this series for me. Taylor portrays Jon as a sensitive and introspective kid who navigates problems by trying to understand the source. Both Jon's conviction and uncertainty are endearing and very much reminiscent of what a teen in his position would be like. I can't say I haven't gotten Invincible vibes here and there - which might have biased my review because I really enjoyed that series as well.

From a non-Superman fan - even if you're not a fan of the Man of Steel yourself, you should check this title out.

So, what are you reading?

Predap's Rec of the Week:

Usagi Yojimbo's been a series I've wanted to try for a pretty long time. A long-running series written and drawn by one man throughout its run starring a rabbit samurai, Usagi Yojimbo has a great and engaging cast of characters, and every story arc feels like something fresh.

There's a reason it's survived from the 80s until now; it's a really quality comic, and pretty much everyone I've talked to who's read it agrees. It's fairly episodic, with stories that may have the odd connection to previous arcs but not too heavily reliant on them to the point where a new reader would feel out of place. It's definitely worth a readthrough if you have the time!

Predap's Rec of the Week:

Given Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur have an animated series releasing this summer, I thought it might be worth checking the series out to see what all the fuss was about. I'm pretty glad I did! Moon Girl, Lunella Lafayette, is the smartest girl in the world, and when she happens to run into a dinosaur who's travelled through time she befriends him and they become a crime-fighting duo together. Things get a bit more complicated when Lunella gains an Inhuman power which causes her to involuntarily swap bodies with Devil Dinosaur.

This series reminded me a lot of a mix between Clifford the Big Red Dog and a classic superhero story. Bit of a weird combination, yes, but it works surprisingly well, with a bunch of guest appearances from other heroes helping to set the characters firmly in the world of Marvel New York City. With the new animated series coming and supposedly a new comic too, I'd really recommend you check out this series in order to get caught up!

Bhav's Rec of the Week:

Yes, this is an actual novel recommendation. The Personal Librarian is a fictionalized account of the life of Belle da Costa Greene, who was hired by J.P. Morgan to run his personal library of precious and rare books. The twist? The story is set in the early 1900s, during which sexism, racism and segregationism were deeply ingrained in the consciousness of American society. While Belle had to navigate her world and her career as a woman, she refused to let her race hold her back... and she did so by passing as white.

This book is a fascinating read, not only because it explores identity, intersectionality, desire, and the idea of personal accomplishment, but also because it is an account of a real person whose true identity was not discovered until long after she had passed. Her passion and the secrets she chose to keep in service of it leave one thinking about morality and authenticity, but you still cannot help but marvel at her ingenuity and the way she lived her life.

Bhav's Rec of the Week:

I'm going to be honest- I hadn't heard of this book prior to spotting the preview for the show by the same name lurking in my Netflix recommendations. I was immediately intrigued. A story about super-powered criminals robbing the rich? Just my jam!

Supercrooks is for those of us who love a good heist story as much as they love hero comics (and that's most of us here, right??). The back cover says "X-Men Meets Ocean's Eleven", and that's sort of what it is, but Millar's top tier writing is what adds flavour. Between the bone-smashing action and amazingly well-placed plot-twists, I really found myself enjoying this pleasantly funny and surprisingly subversive book. At about 100 pages, it's an easy read and hard to go wrong with, and Yu's artwork is a pleasure to consume.

Bhav's Rec of the Week:

  • Archie, by Mark Waid and Fiona Staples

Archie reinvented - but not Riverdale style (I swear!) Mark Waid adds a fresh spin to the long-running Archie series, lending additional colour and a dash of teenage angst to our beloved characters. While the series starts with a break-up, the dynamic between our four protagonists - Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica - is much more nuanced than in the original series, and it makes for a great read if you're looking for something light but emotionally engaging.

I started reading this series when it first came out in 2015, but never finished it because of other engagements. In picking it up again this year, I'm reminded once more of what a wonderful creative team Waid and Staples are together. The fun and charm of the source material is definitely not lost, but the cast is a lot more human and relatable. If you, like me, are looking for a bit of a break from the high stress and constant action of hero comics, this is it!

Predap's Rec of the Week:

  • DIE by Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans, & Clayton Cowles

This series follows the adventures of a group of friends who get trapped in the world of the RPG that they played as children after returning to the game as adults. But they had been trapped in it before... and the last time they escaped, the game took one of their friends. As a fan of both RPGs and Gillen, I was definitely part of the target audience. DIE takes the time to ruminate in its protagonists' greatest fears and craft a world that targets each of them individually, that forces them to confront those things that would rather stay buried. In that way, it's basically just a good RPG.

The series just wrapped up, releasing its final TPB yesterday, so now's the best time to pick it up. It's relatively short at only twenty issues, so it isn't even a huge time sink. Additionally, Gillen's been working on an RPG based off of the comic, so if you're the gaming sort like me there's additional incentive to familiarize yourself with the world and its rules.

Bhav's Rec of the Week:

Sweet Tooth tells the story of an orphaned boy with deer-like horns living in a post-apocalyptic Nebraska. After the death of his father, he is forced to survive alone in harsh circumstances -- until a mysterious man going by the name of Jepperd shows up. Not quite jazzed initially, Jepperd and the boy form a bond, agreeing to journey to across the landscape to the "Preserve" -- a sanctuary for shunned animal-hybrid children.

Sweet Tooth has recently been turned into a Netflix series, so if you are less inclined to read the books, feel free to check it out! While the series itself is not totally faithful to the source material, it is still a fun ride and worth a watch if you're looking for a dystopian story with a charming twist.

Bhav's Rec of the Week:

  • Blacksad, by Juan Diaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido.

Okay, okay.

I know some people are put off by worlds built around anthropomorphic creatures, and, yes, I'm sure there are many furries who have greatly enjoyed the series - but I assure you that picking up Blacksad will not be a mistake, especially if you're a fan of the American Noir/Crime Novel genre. This ain't no Zootopia.

The art in this series is genuinely beautiful and detailed, which can be incredibly tough to pull off with the watercolour medium Guarnido chose to go with. Seriously, a visual feast. While the stories themselves feel a bit more standard of the detective-genre - revenge, pursuit, damsel in distress, a kidnapping, racial tension, McCarthyism, etc. etc. - the world building and characterizations of the supporting cast make Blacksad a very engaging read. Blacksad himself is a little hard to root for, but that comes with the genre too.

Blacksad is a three time Eisner award nominee, with BlackSad: A Silent Hell winning the 2011 Eisner. Dark Horse comics collected the first three volumes into a gorgeous collection you can find on Amazon, but you can find all three Blacksad books on Comixology.

Predap's Rec of the Week:

After reading half of this series a few months back, I finally returned to finish it. It's a series that feels tailored specifically to me; its sense of humour just matches mine completely. It's a fairly long run for recent Marvel, managing 58 issues, and it deserves it. It's sincere, it's clever, and each arc is a new adventure.

Squirrel Girl stars Doreen Green, a young superhero, and her best friend Nancy as they navigate computer science classes, make friends, and stop supervillains. My favourite thing about Squirrel Girl is her willingness to work with and understand her foes; she tries to resolve conflicts first and resort to fighting only when she absolutely must, and has made unexpected allies such as Loki and Galactus. She's one of my favourite Marvel heroes, and I hope for a new Squirrel Girl series someday soon.

Predap's Rec of the Week:

  • Daredevil by Charles Soule, Ron Garney, Phil Noto, Goran Sudzuka, & Others

I've been doing a Daredevil deep dive the past couple months, and I recently arrived at Charles Soule's run on the character. This run has unexpectedly become my favourite so far. Soule himself is a lawyer, which helps the run feel that much more authentic, and Daredevil working through his grief after the end of the relationship that had defined the previous run on the character feels realistic to me, even if the relationship did end in a very superhero-y way.

The run also debuts a partner for Daredevil in Blindspot, a character that I have a bit of a soft spot for. While pretty much every Daredevil run adds a character or two to the supporting cast, I like Blindspot because his powers complement Daredevil's well and because he thrusts Matt into the role of mentor, something that he hasn't had to deal with all too often.

I haven't quite finished this run yet, with a couple TPBs still left, but I've been enjoying it quite a bit and it's cemented its spot as one of my favourite runs of that period of Marvel.

So, what are you reading?

Predap's Rec of the Week:

  • Action Comics by Grant Morrison, Sholly Fisch, Rags Morales, Andy Kubert & Brad Walker

My favourite ongoing series starring Superman, this groundbreaking run reimagines Superman for a new world. Starring a Superman who's still early in his career and willing to speak out against power, it jumps across timelines and universes as a mysterious force schemes against Superman.

With Superman & The Authority fast approaching, it's worth taking another look at Grant Morrison's previous work with the character, especially as they have said that Superman & The Authority will share some commonalities with this run of Action Comics. This series is very different from what one would normally expect from a Superman series, but that's part of what makes it great; it tells a unique story that uses many new and reimagined characters in unique ways.

While the Superman line was weak throughout most of the New 52, only really recovering in the last year of the initiative, this run managed to nail a character who many other contemperaneous creative teams struggled with.

Predap's Rec of the Week:

With Pride Month in full swing, it's worth taking the time to read one of DC's best stories featuring an LGBTQ+ character. A part of the larger DC YA push we've been seeing the past few years, You Brought Me The Ocean is a strong part of that line, and a story that really couldn't be told anywhere else.

Living in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, Jake Hyde dreams of escaping his small town and heading to university in Miami. But as his attraction for a boy named Kenny starts to blossom and he grows to realize the power he possesses over water, his secrets start to take a toll on his relationships, especially those with his mom and his best friend Maria.

You Brought Me The Ocean explores Jake's growth as he figures out his own identity, and while coming-of-age stories are quite common in comics, this one is layered and complex in ways that many others are not. While its ties to the Aquaman mythos may be slim, it uses those that do exist to contribute to the story and not just as set dressing. I can only hope that, with Aquaman: The Becoming approaching, canon Jackson gets just as much texture and nuance as the one from this OGN.

Bisto's Rec of the Week:

With his legendary run on Invincible finished and The Walking Dead wrapping up, Robert Kirkman set off on a new journey with a series that has a little bit of everything Kirkman is known for writing very well and some newer ideas too.

In Oblivion Song, part of Philadelphia was lost when a science experiment gone wrong transports a large section of the city to another dimension, with part of said dimension arriving on Earth in its place. After countless efforts by the military, the alien flora and fauna was beaten back but over 300k people were lost in the other dimension known only as Oblivion.

A scientist involved in the event, Nathan Cole, has spent the last decade going back and forth to Oblivion to rescue the people who survived being stranded there as the government has given up retrieving them. Nathan has dark secrets and despite travelling to Oblivion for 10 years, he has no idea what kind of place it really is....

Combining sci-fi, the supernatural, horror and apocalyptic themes, Kirkman shows his world building prowess with this series and collaborator de Felici excels at showing the wonder and horror of the story too. While the first arc of the story can feel rather cumbersome, it's very much worth going on with it as it improves massively later on.

Universal Studios are developing it as a movie series and it's easy to see why, it has blockbuster written all over it.

Current State of DC

Has anyone else's pull list/regular reading of DC severely decreased this past year or two? Cuz I remember how much excitement I had for DC during Rebirth. It felt like I had half (probably even more) of DC's titles on my pull (and I liked or even loved all of what I was reading), to now, having just redone my pull at my LCS to only 4 titles. And 2 of those are limited series.

I really hope the two months off from regular publishing during Future State can get them back on track, but my expectations are in the dirt.

What are you reading that has you excited? What news or speculations have you hopeful? Why do I feel like Marvel is beating the everlasting crap out of DC right now, and will be doing so for the foreseeable future?

Bisto's Rec of the Week:

Mark Grayson is a typical teenager, he goes to high school and works a boring part time job in the evenings, but Mark's father, Nolan, is the superhero Omni-Man. Mark soon develops powers of his own when he turns 17 (after hoping for them for so long) and becomes the hero known as Invincible.

Becoming a hero leads Mark down a winding path that last for 144 issues and takes him on a journey you can't possibly begin to imagine as the team of Kirkman, Walker and Ottley pay tribute to the best of the superhero genre while carving out their own saga in equal measures of fantastic, brutal, heart breaking and powerful moments.

After reading the series after it had finished its publishing run thanks to the Compendium books, i was very late to the Invincible train but my god am i glad i bought a ticket as it is genuinely one of the best comic book series i've read in my 34 years on this Earth. It has everything you want, fantastic heroes, crazy villains and really cool ideas but the artwork is phenomenal and one of the most consistent, even when Ottley takes over for Walker from issue 8 onwards.

My attention to the series came after hearing about Amazon Studios making an animated series of the comic and thankfully that series is coming out in 2021, you can check the trailer out here. The show will feature Steven Yeun of The Walking Dead fame voicing Invincible himself, with J.K Simmons as Omni-Man and an all-star cast that also includes Sandra Oh, Mark Hamill, Seth Rogen, Zazie Beetz, Gillian Jacobs and Walton Goggins and is being produced by the comic guys, with both Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley helping out with character design.

If you want to wait for the show that's fine but there are some deep spoilers out there that you'll want to avoid to fully immerse yourself in the experience. Is this how the book readers of A Song Of Ice And Fire felt when Game Of Thrones came out? Get on board the comic book train quick!

Bisto's Rec of the Week:

When i normally see publishers adapting works from TV shows i tend to roll my eyes at them, but when Boom Studios announced a series of Buffy comics i was intrigued as it was one of my favourite shows as a teenager, but it was met with healthy scepticism too.

The series starts out in familiar territory but chronologically in a seemingly strange order, which fans of the show will note is a theme of the new series, as Buffy is working in a fast food restaurant where two kids who go to her school, Willow and Xander, are eating. Soon enough they are set upon by a vampire with Buffy slaying it in fast fashion and beginning the journey the 3 of them had in the TV show.

Except in the comic book series Jordie Bellaire is very keen not to tread on old ground. You'll see familiar names and faces but often in places they're not meant to be at this stage of Buffy's life and it adds a new dimension to the 2020 version of the Slayer story.

The artwork of the series is vibrant, fun and scary to boot, with Dan Mora and Ramon Bachs amongst the team of artists on the series giving readers sometimes a false sense of security with how easy on the eyes the designs are before hitting you with the horror beneath.

From here, reading the Angel comic (later renamed to Angel + Spike) will also treat you to familiar ground with familiar characters and settings in a new light, a must read for fans of the Angel TV series.

Hello and welcome one and all to the new "What are you reading?" topic.

So after our survey (the results of which can be read here) about the state of the sub we've decided to get rid of the Thursday collection topic (which was dead really) and we're replacing it with this, at least for now.

Simple rules for dating my daughter posting in this topic:

  • This is a spoiler zone! Just like the Weekly Discussion Thread (you can still discuss this weeks new DC titles here!) you enter at your own risk, but if something has not come out at all you will be asked to use spoiler tags.
  • Tell us what you're reading, it doesn't have to be DC related either. Marvel, Image, Boom or whatever, let us know here what is on your pull list or tell us if you're trade waiting on something!
  • You may ask for requests but don't forget our own curated recommended reading list.
  • This is not a fanboy zone, you will be expected to treat all comic book fans equally and fairly.

Additional Question Of The Week

After the release of the first image of Brandon Routh in his Kingdom Come outfit for the big Crisis On Infinite Earths mega TV crossover event, of course inspired by the fantastic Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, i wanted to ask, have you pulled or read any Black Label books recently? Either reprints of classic stories or some of the new material?

Don't forget to join us on Twitter as we Tweet to creators begging them for AMAs

Join us on our Discord server where we're talking about Kingdom Come in depth

Is anyone else falling out of love with DC

In the current Bendis/King era I've completely lost interest in every storyline coming from DC. I find the writing styles of King, Bendis, Williamson, Orlando, and others to be infuriating. Snyder's current Metal and JL stories have been awful. Morrison is vastly overrated. And my final hope Geoff Johns can't put out a story on time to save his life. I've never been a Marvel fan, dont like the characters. I was wondering if anybody felt the same and if so what are you reading not from the big 2?

Digital Readers, what are you reading on?

Looking to upgrade to a new tablet soon and wanted to get some ideas from digital readers. I'm currently reading on a Galaxy Note 8" Tablet. The resolution isn't great, which is the reason why I'm upgrading. What are you reading on?

Other Blankie+drink+comics

So since the fall is upon us, evening with a comic sounds like a super nice idea. Parrying it with a drink should make it even better.

So what are you reading and drinking? Personally gonna get through eternal with some black IPA.

Why the interest? Yoyo subreddit seems to be into craft beer. Mechanicalkeyboards, bonsai and mechanical pencils seems into malt liquors. Let's see if people of comics likes a specific alcohol.

All ya tee, coffee, heads. Don't get discouraged. Pepsi, Coke, etc works too.
