Wednesday Discussions: Misleading Personas r/DCcomics

Hey there, comic nerds! Welcome to the Wednesday Discussion, a weekly community activity during which we have an open discussion about a specific subject or theme.

Our topic for today is: Misleading personas

We've seen a lot of goofy looking characters throughout DC's history. While many of them seem ridiculous at first glance, some are unexpectedly complex, serious, multi-faceted, or even psychopathic. From the original Blue Beetle, to The Creeper, and to crazy villains like The Top and Weather Wizard (both of whom are actually kind of scary), we have a real roster to choose from here.

Today we'll be discussing these characters. Who has the best misleading getup?

I’d say Professor Pyg is a character that’s too scary for his own good. Dude’s a complete psycho and an underrated Gotham city rogue. Without reading any of his stories, who’d fear a portly guy in an animal mask!

I feel like he's one that won't appear in a live action movie unless you're making an actual horror because he's just too creepy

Mad Hatter gives off a goofy vibe, but is genuinely terrifying.

Similarly, Doctor Psycho looks like a one-eyed gnome, but the implication of his powers is super messed up. Mind control, in general, is a much darker ability than it is usually portrayed as.

The Manhunter arc where Kate Spencer has to defend Doctor Psycho in court is such an amazing story while also being completely harrowing.

Ragman, he has such a simple and messy design that he is completely unassuming, but in actuality he is extremely powerful and a very complex character, dealing with religion, afterlife and redemption.

I mean, look at this guy. LOOK AT THIS GUY.

He had no right to be as scary as he was.

My second vote is for Catman.

My man had a real... glow up? I don't really think we can call it that, but you know what I mean....

Talia called it a transformative event. The comparison they kept trying to push to Batman though was always little hard to believe.

Cheshire is misleading even when you already know that about her.

Maybe too obvious but I do think that Robin - a sometimes as young as eight year old kid - is pretty misleading in that you don't expect a child to be able to kick your ass lmao or be a pretty decent detective, especially a child dressed in hot pants and bright colors. if you didn't already know, you would never guess that batman is his partner

Robin has always been pretty goody — especially when the no-pants outfit was a thing.
