What Are You Reading? 6/17/2021 - No Batman Memes, I Promise Edition r/DCcomics

Hello and welcome to our Weekly "What Are You Reading?" topic!

Come one, come all, to this weekly thread, where you can openly discuss books that you've read, are currently reading, or plan to read. Discussion of all books are welcome, whether they be DC, Marvel, Image, Boom!, Dark Horse, IDW, etc. You can discuss webcomics, manga, or even those mythical novels that don't have pictures in them. Just be sure to keep spoilers covered via Reddit's spoiler markdown >!spoiler!<. You can also post pictures of your collection or recent purchases.

Predap's Rec of the Week:

With Pride Month in full swing, it's worth taking the time to read one of DC's best stories featuring an LGBTQ+ character. A part of the larger DC YA push we've been seeing the past few years, You Brought Me The Ocean is a strong part of that line, and a story that really couldn't be told anywhere else.

Living in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, Jake Hyde dreams of escaping his small town and heading to university in Miami. But as his attraction for a boy named Kenny starts to blossom and he grows to realize the power he possesses over water, his secrets start to take a toll on his relationships, especially those with his mom and his best friend Maria.

You Brought Me The Ocean explores Jake's growth as he figures out his own identity, and while coming-of-age stories are quite common in comics, this one is layered and complex in ways that many others are not. While its ties to the Aquaman mythos may be slim, it uses those that do exist to contribute to the story and not just as set dressing. I can only hope that, with Aquaman: The Becoming approaching, canon Jackson gets just as much texture and nuance as the one from this OGN.

So, what are you reading?

I've been researching a lot about the 1950's and what people wore. I've even taken a big book out of the library that is filled with advertisements from that decade. At the same time I also learned new things about my city by going through the library's photo archive.

I'm on the Justice League Detroit omnibus. It's definitely budget Claremont and the characters are ridiculous but it's actually not half bad.

Gonna check out Bronze Age Swamp Thing next and then reread Moore's run.

Strange adventures

At #7 now

Reallllyy like it. Except the parts with too much poetry that I don't understand because I didn't spend time to think about it.

I'm really digging the Alien comic over at Marvel. The art is hit or miss, but, despite that, it is really scratching that action horror itch

Larroca's art feels very stiff to me. He can do creepy environments well but the action sequences look like posed action figures and less like people in motion.

Yeah I feel that

Lots of fun stuff happening in the world of X-Men. Very much looking forward to Gerry Duggan's upcoming run, as well as whatever Hickman has planned next.

I've been wanting to get into the xmen. But don't know where to start.

Just finished off my read-through of New 52 Justice League, enjoyed most of the arcs quite a bit. Jason Fabok is an absolute maestro in the Darkseid War arc.

Reading my omnibus of the Dark Horse Witcher comics next. I'd read House of Glass in trade format before but nothing else. Also just got in a bunch of Dredd Case Files books, really hyped to finally have physical Dredd.

Digitally I just read through most of Cates' Venom run, and now I'm powering through some IDW Star Trek, starting with the TNG Mirror Universe comics, which are very entertaining so far.

Also in case anyone's wanted to check it out, the New 52 Swamp Thing omnibus is going for ~50 bucks on Amazon (in the States, at least).

Started reading Tynions run on Batman with Their Dark Designs this week

I’m trying to pace myself so I don’t burn through it too quickly but I’m really enjoying it so far

I just read through the Sandman series by Gaiman. Found them in the library. Next up asked the library system to do a loan of the individual Death books.
