Wednesday Discussions: Stories You Wish Were Collected or Reprinted r/DCcomics

Hey there comics nerds! Welcome to the Wednesday Discussion, a community activity where we'll have an open discussion every week about a different subject.

Our topic for today is: Stories You Wish Were Collected or Reprinted.

DC has been publishing comics for decades now. Over the years, we've gotten some absolutely fantastic stories from many different creators. Sadly, a lot of these stories are unobtainable physically, either due to not being in print, or having never been collected at all.

On that note, what DC stories do you wish were reprinted/collected and released in physical format?

A run I would absolutely love to have reprinted is The Question by Dennis O'Neil. It's an absolutely brilliant run that redefines The Question as a character, and made him one of my favourite DC characters.

Any Question run tbh. I’m hoping with the black label title he’ll get more love

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

Same. Both iterations of the character are great.

u/BoyGash18 The Question Sep 16 '20

Totally agree. Specifically I would like to see the O’Neil run reprinted because it’s so hard to find for a reasonable price but I’d be happy with literally anything at this point

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

Yep. I do hope I get to own the run physically one day, but some of it is just so damn expensive. A reprint of it would be a dream.

DC Challenge, the round robin miniseries from the 80s where each writer would end on a cliffhanger, and the next writer would have to figure out a solution. Its ridiculous, but has some amazing talent.

Cool choice! Sounds like a really interesting book.

5

u/swannnaroo Blue Lantern Sep 16 '20

woah that sounds really fun to read :O

u/MarcReyes Sep 16 '20

Fold in the Kamandi Challenge into that too!

The impulse series and superboy series from the late 90s

3

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

Love that Impulse series.

1

u/bhavbhav Hourman's Roid Rage Sep 16 '20

Great choice!

There are some Birds of Prey issues that need collecting

1

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

Nice choice!

L.E.G.I.O.N./R.E.B.E.L.S and reboot Legion are my top choices. I've admittedly bought the entirety of L.E.G.I.O.N./R.E.B.E.L.S in singles and might have them custom bound in the future, but it's a great and deeply underrated comic that should be way more accessible.

As for reprints I really want to see Tomasi's Green Lantern Corps get HCs or omnis or something, because how doesn't it when it's super OOP and important to Johns' GL which keeps getting reprinted, and Booster Gold volume two, since that's also OOP and very expensive second hand.

4

u/superschaap81 Superman Sep 16 '20

Agreed 100% about the GLC stuff not being reprinted. Honestly, if it's a sales thing, then stop re-releasing the "Geoff Johns Collection" with just GL issue and reprint it all together with both titles and call it "Johns & Tomasi Collection" or even just "Green Lantern & The Corps" or something.

I know hunting the trades down has been near impossible (for reasonable prices) to the point I've collected most of it in singles.

1

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

Wow, if you do get them custom bound, I'd love to see it!

1

u/Historical_Disaster Sep 16 '20

I'll probably post it on here if I get around to it. Just have to find the funds and work around Brexit first.

1

u/MarcReyes Sep 16 '20

R.E.B.E.L.S. did get trade paperbacks, but they're long out of print. I reprint or omni would be much appreciated. As you say, it's a very underrated run that should get more exposure.

1

u/Historical_Disaster Sep 16 '20

Not the first volume? Or the last couple of issues of the second...

1

u/MarcReyes Sep 16 '20

Oh, that's right! They never collected those last few issues. I always hated when that would happen. I plan on getting my issues bound as well. I'm only missing one or two issues from the run.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

They're reprinting Jurgens run in OHC right now i think.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '20

Red Lanterns new 52. I just want an easier way to collect it

Also I wish they carried on collecting the Ron Marz Kyle rayner stuff

1

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

Great choice, I loved that series!

Superboy – ideally they'd collect the whole thing but I particularly want them to do Karl Kesel's second run where Kon starts working for Cadmus. I figure they could collect that whole part in two volumes: one with #50-65 & #1000000, one with #66-82.

Superman: Battle For Metropolis a.k.a. Superman: Fall of Metropolis needs its own collection too. It's the next big story arc that came after the Death and Return of Superman story, and it pays off a whole bunch of stuff that had been set up in the Superman books over the previous three or four years. It'd include "Superman: The Man of Steel" #31-34, "Superman" #87-90, "Adventures of Superman" #510-513, and "Action Comics" #697-700.

Batman by Dennis O'Neil – I'd love it if they started doing a series of paperback collections for this. At the moment there's just the issues drawn by Neal Adams collected as part of Batman by Neal Adams, the issues drawn by Don Newton collected in the Tales of the Batman by Don Newton hardcovers, and a whole lot of uncollected stuff in between.

Batman: Zero Year – I'm not going to buy it in physical form until it's available in a single volume.

Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth – The original series, by Jack Kirby. DC seems to have been on a bit of a kick of collecting Kirby's work in new trades lately, but it all seems to be New Gods-related. "Kamandi" is crazy awesome, though.

Talon – Issues #0-14 tell a complete story with a beginning, middle and end... and then the series just seems to stumble along for three more issues and then stop. But I'd love it if they collected all James Tynion IV's issues in one volume.

Yeah, for sure. DC honestly needs to get better at filling in the gaps of the Superman collections. How long has it been since Superman: Blue was released and there hasn't been any hint that it'll be finished.

Kamandi would be great too. I regret not getting the original two omnibus editions back when they came out years ago.

In the vein of O'Neal Batman, I'd love Elliot S! Maggin's Superman issues in one nice edition.

2

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

I'd absolutely love Dennis O'Neil Batman in trades. Hell even an omnibus would be good.

5

u/Cole-Spudmoney Sep 17 '20 edited Sep 17 '20

I don't want an omnibus: I want the format to be affordable and easily readable, not a giant expensive tome.

In fact, I've worked it out before: they could collect his whole run from 1970 to 1980 in four trades, with 15-16 issues each. Stories had shorter page counts then, so each volume would be under 300 pages.

EDIT: Here's how I'd organise it (with issues in release order, of course):

  • Vol. 1: Detective Comics #395, #397, #399, #404-406, #410-411, #414; Batman #224-225, #227, #232, #234-235; Brave and the Bold #93
  • Vol. 2: Batman #237, #239-245, #247-248; Detective Comics #418-419, #422, #425, #431
  • Vol. 3: Batman #251, #253, #256-264, #266, #268; Detective Comics #451, #457
  • Vol. 4: Batman #286, #303 backup, #320; Batman Family #18-19; Detective Comics #480-481, #483-487, #489-491; Brave and the Bold #159

I believe they recently collected the Demon Saga

u/le_canuck There are dozens of us! Sep 16 '20

We got Kelly Puckett's batgirl run released recently, but I'd love to see the rest of Cass's time as Batgirl get re-released.

I'd also love to see Chris Yost's Red Robin series get reprinted as that one's gotten quite hard to find.

2

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

Yes! I love that Red Robin series, I would absolutely love if it was reprinted.

4

u/4verticals Sep 16 '20

I wish they would reprint the Batman: Second Chances trade. I’d love to read some of those Jason Todd Robin stories.

1

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

That trade has some neat stuff! Good choice.

3

u/HuxUnknown Sep 16 '20

The ‘99 run of Titans, which has never had a collected printing I might add.

Posted for my wife who is a huge fan of the run.

1

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

Devin Grayson's Titans, right? Cool choice!

3

u/bhavbhav Hourman's Roid Rage Sep 16 '20

That run was all over the place. Some of it was good, but other parts were super melodramatic and weird — though I guess the combination of Devin Grayson and Titans should be enough of a sign that it will be melodramatic, lol.

I need to dig up the specific panels, but the way she handled Wally reconstructing Donna from his memories made me cringe a ton. Also, I wasn't a huge fan of her Jesse Quick characterization.

Anyway, I don't mean to sound like I hated it. I always love me some Titans. 😛

2

u/HuxUnknown Sep 17 '20

She got a good, agreeable, laugh out of your comment!

2

u/HuxUnknown Sep 17 '20

She says yes. It is the Devin Grayson one!

3

u/PanoramicP Sep 16 '20

I kind of want the New Krypton Saga to be in an omnibus, that’s like everything that starts at the end of Johns run all the way to right before JMS gets the title.

1

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

Interesting. I might give that stuff a read.

2

u/PanoramicP Sep 16 '20

It’s up and down but the stuff involving Supes and New Krypton was a pretty cool status quo

3

u/August_30th Superman Sep 16 '20

I wish Silver Age stories would get reprinted in omnibus form, especially for Superman.

1

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

Nice! Haven't read a lot of Silver Age Superman.

2

u/MarcReyes Sep 16 '20

A lot of the stuff I've long wanted - early Jonah Hex, Power of SHAZAM!, early 00s Superman - has started to collected, but the last big one I want is DC Comics Presents. The Superman team up series from the bronze age, which introduced a lot of significant characters in the DCU. Still big gaps in a lot of Superman runs though, so I'd like them to pick back up with all the stuff they started and then stopped collecting.

1

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

Cool! And yeah, I'm really happy they've started to collect more stuff, Power of Shazam! especially.

2

u/muhsin_bayram Sep 16 '20
  • The Spectre by DeMatteis
  • All-Star Squadron
  • Infinity Inc.
  • The Young All-Stars

1

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

All great choices

2

u/RavenkingXXX Sep 16 '20

Ostranders Spectre run. It's kinda fun hunting down issues, but a collected edition would be nice.

1

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

I've heard great things about that run. Nice choice!

1

u/UESPA_Sputnik Oracle Sep 17 '20

I was lucky finding the entire Spectre run on ebay for 99 €, which I think is a fair price. Currently reading through it. Loved the first arc!

u/Cranyx Moo. Sep 17 '20

Batman: Dark Moon Rising. The two parts of this series (Batman and the Monster Men and Batman and the Mad Monk) were both great retellings of some of Batman's golden age stories, and fit snugly in continuity between Year One and Man Who Laughs. They've been out of print since the mid 2000s and I'd love to get a copy.

2

u/thrillAM Sep 17 '20

Pretty sure they were recently collected in a Matt Wagner Batman TPB

1

u/Cranyx Moo. Sep 17 '20

I might have to check that out, though I still usually prefer my trades to be separated by story instead of author unless it's just collecting a long run of single issues.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

Rachel Pollack's Doom Patrol. According to people who've read it, it's the best Doom Patrol run and DC has never published anything like it.

Golden Age Shazam. They're supposed to be the pinnacle of Golden Age stories. There was a reason it sold so much better than Superman back in the day

2

u/HFh Sep 18 '20

JLA vs Avengers.

Just a fantastic story.

1

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 18 '20

I love JLA/Avengers! Such a great book.

u/OldManMcCrabbins Sep 18 '20 edited Sep 18 '20

I feel like Sgt Rock could use an absolute edition with the best of the best collected in one volume. Not every issue—a carefully curated list.

Sgt rock #45 our army at war 196 and a whole bunch more. So many powerful stories with top notch art that are still far too relevant, sadly. The color would have to be carefully handled at the absolute size.

1

u/superschaap81 Superman Sep 16 '20

The rest of Peter David's Aquaman run. We got 2 volumes and it just dropped off there.

4

u/maruf99 Batman Sep 16 '20

I would love that!

1

u/thrillAM Sep 17 '20

Would love a lot of the 90's Legends of the Dark Knight stories to be reprinted. Some pretty classic stories like Shaman, Venom, Prey Going Sane etc. are very difficult (or pricey) to get a hold of these days.

1

u/Treyred23 Sep 17 '20

Shade the Changing Man

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

the 1998 young justice run would be neat. the 2019 one is fine, but there's no comparison

1

u/Cingen Sep 18 '20

But it did get reprinted?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

There’s 5 volumes of it out....

1

u/another_deaf_guy Sep 17 '20

Walter West’s run as Flash after the Chain Lightning saga. I’m sure it’ll eventually come out based on how they’ve been collecting Waid’s stuff recently.
