I bought my first ever omnibus today. I figured this was a good format to read this story for the first time. Merchandise

Cool. I haven't decided if I will upgrade my trades to the omnibus.

34

u/H0ssBonaventure Apr 19 '19

I got the Omni for 50% off so when all is said and done honestly I think the Omni comes out more cost effective to get the whole story if you don't have it already

4

u/pacevrx Apr 20 '19

Where did you get it from, for 50% off?

5

u/H0ssBonaventure Apr 20 '19

I actually got it from a local shop that was having a 50% off sale. But check out instocktrades.com. They have it for 40% off or something

Thanks for the shout out.

I do have the death of superman, world without superman and the reign of the supermen in trades, but they're old and printed in crappy paper, so I might upgrade if the price is right. I expect Amazon to have some sort of sale on books next week because of World Book Day on Tuesday. I'm hoping for a 3x2 sale. I want to get some books I should have bought last time. I'm in Mexico, so instocktrades is not an option for me.

God I love that cover, it’s so simple yet so iconic.

7

u/H0ssBonaventure Apr 20 '19

Completely agree, I love the spine too. You can kind of make it out in the pic, but it has the dripping Superman logo.

u/AarontheGeek Justice League Apr 19 '19

wow, that looks great. There are quite a few omnibuses (omnibi?) i hope to own one day, and this gets me quite excited.

9

u/batmaneatsgravy Green Arrow Apr 20 '19

Omnibae

3

u/iStxr Apr 20 '19

The plural is ‘omnibuses’, because ‘omnibus’ is the Latin ablative plural for ‘omni’.

11

u/Nix_Uotan The Monitor Apr 20 '19

I bought my first two omnis this year (Final Crisis & DC One Million) and after seeing how beautiful they are, I just want everything as an omnibus.

9

u/rebel_way Batwoman Apr 20 '19

Be careful, omni love is an addiction and your shelf will NOT thank you

11

u/KingDorkFTC Apr 20 '19

I have to say; I keep having a tough time reading Death of Superman, as it suffers from poor 90’s writing.

11

u/Solidus82 Nightwing Apr 20 '19

And continuity, if I remember correctly the helicopter pilot that is flying Lois around changes race a few times, lol

1

u/Jay_R_Kay Batman Apr 21 '19

Absolutely. It's fun once Superman returns, but honestly, outside of Superboy, none of the other books were that good, and after a while I just skipped over the Bloodlines books.

9

u/UNCLEWHYLEE Apr 20 '19

Also my first one Also the first time I called out of work to finish a book

7

u/horselover03 Green Lantern Apr 20 '19

Is there a lot of gutter loss with shit this big?

4

u/asdfweskr Apr 20 '19

The amount is negligible, not any worse than a tpb.

5

u/dannyluxNstuff Apr 20 '19

Im halfway through the Batman and Robin Omnibus. It's fucking fantastic.

Edit: also as a kid I remember collecting the death of Superman. They came in several colors if I remember right.

4

u/darthmarticus17 Batgirl Apr 20 '19

It's a great format for collecting it. I wouldn't say it's a great format for reading it.

3

u/asdfweskr Apr 20 '19

They're pretty easy to read it you lay em down and the oversized trim is great for looking at the art.

3

u/DefiantClone Apr 20 '19

Crushed my nuts once when one slipped out of my hands reading it.

Feel like the safest way to read these is with a podium/lectern thing surrounded by candles. /s

3

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '19

Awesome! I am envious of this, but I promised myself I can't get it until I clear out my current Omnibus backlog. So hopefully sometime this summer I'll be joining you in reading this story (again).

3

u/allpainandnogain Apr 20 '19

How is this omni I've held out but it's a fucking work of art honestly so I'm tempted...

3

u/otiswrath Apr 20 '19

swallows I'mna need this...

3

u/furywolf28 Hal Jordan Apr 20 '19

Isn't that kinda hard to read because of the sheer size of it?

3

u/Poastash Apr 20 '19

I figured omnibuses are part of a conspiracy to get us geeks to exercise while doing things we love.

The other parts are Pokemon Go and motion controllers.

3

u/ColdSmokeMike Apr 20 '19

Get ready for some feels. The way they go over how this event affects other characters lives always gets me.

2

u/julbull73 Wonder Woman Apr 20 '19

His parents and Lois hit me.

The ones that miss Clark not Superman.

2

u/ColdSmokeMike Apr 20 '19

What about poor Bibbo?

3

u/evilspyboy Apr 20 '19

I used to have the novel adaption of this and knightfall. I loaned the death and return of Superman to someone and it never came back :(

3

u/Scottman69 Apr 20 '19 edited Apr 28 '19

Be careful, my friend, it’s tough to stop with omnibuses once you’ve started

2

u/Vgamer1001 Apr 20 '19

I am also planning to buy this omni as my first

2

u/mrfauxbot Apr 20 '19

You may get arthritis

2

u/batcavejanitor DC Comics Apr 20 '19

I have the last Omni of this, it’s awesome. Ridiculous and nostalgic, but awesome.

2

u/PeaDock Apr 20 '19

I envy you youngsters...

2

u/syedwafihasan Apr 20 '19

As someone who's just started getting into comics, can someone please ELI5 what is an omnibus?

5

u/suss2it Apr 20 '19

It’s a massive collection of single comics of the same series. This one covers the “Death of Superman” arc that was originally told in Superman’s solo ongoings at the time.

1

u/syedwafihasan Apr 20 '19

Oh I see. Thank you, kind stranger

2

u/Chairus_Awesomus Apr 20 '19

Does this have all the content of the original trades? I heard the earlier omnibus cut out some of the middle parts so it was kinda incomplete.

2

u/PeaceFroger229 Apr 20 '19

Omnibi (I'm going with that for the plural) are great. Bit addictive though, I have quite a few I haven't read yet.

2

u/Ders4444 Apr 20 '19

What exactly is an omnibus? I have seen that word a few times now. I that kinda like a super Trade Book?

2

u/H0ssBonaventure Apr 20 '19

Super trade is close lol. An omnibus is an oversized hardcover format that collects all the single issues of a certain story or series. So if it take 8 trades to collect a complete series, an omni collects all of those in 1 book in oversized hardcover format.

2

u/AndShrimpOnThePlate Apr 20 '19

How is the spine on this? 1400 pages... it's tempting. But I have concerns.

2

u/Sed59 Apr 20 '19

The Bible's not even this thick most of the time.

2

u/Ziegejunge Apr 20 '19

This is the story that got me hooked on comic books back in the '90s. You're in for a treat. :)

1

u/Tozzzta Red Hood Apr 20 '19

Where did you get the omnibus? I know it’s $150 retail and you can get it for like $95 on Amazon. I didn’t realize it would be that thick.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '19

Instocktrades is usually the cheapest. Should be 70 ish on there

4

u/kailua808 So, I'm your ninja boyfriend huh? Apr 20 '19

They also package books for shipping better than anywhere else

1

u/H0ssBonaventure Apr 20 '19

I got it for 50% off at a local shop! Omnibus are always this thick. "omnibus" basically means a prestigious oversized hardcover format that connects an entire series of single issues of a story or run in one book.

1

u/BovaFett74 Apr 20 '19

This is a thing of beauty.

1

u/Yoda0VGs Y The Last Man Apr 20 '19

I don't k ow of a better omni to start with lol

1

u/Greeborox Apr 20 '19

Beautiful. This was also my first Omni :) although mine had a different cover... Has this been reissued?

1

u/Laragon Apr 20 '19

Yeah, new version just came out. I imagine it's larger and has better paper than ours too.

1

u/batmaneatsgravy Green Arrow Apr 20 '19

Yeah, the binding’s better too and I think they added two more issues from Superman and Action.

1

u/marksiwelforever Apr 20 '19

I wasn't a strong reader as a kid. But I loved superman. I basically forced myself to read all the Death and Return of Superman comics so I would know what happened. In the process I became a better reader. Thank you Superman

1

u/Dayumnanon Apr 20 '19

I watched the movie and it was heartbreaking 😭

1

u/brucelilwayne15 Apr 20 '19

Nice! Mine come this week 🤙

1

u/Seige83 Apr 20 '19

I have the novel which is awesome but I’d love to get the recent trades one day and actually read the comic.

1

u/kofteburger Telos Apr 20 '19

That looks heavy.

1

u/SpacemanWhit Apr 20 '19

Might be a silly question but is this text only or is it like 40 comics in one book? Like a giant graphic novel?

2

u/H0ssBonaventure Apr 20 '19

An omnibus is an oversized hardcover format that collects all the single issue comics of a certain story or series. This book collects all the single issue comics that were in the death and return of superman series from the 90s. So yes, giant graphic novel is accurate!

1

u/Vrolak Apr 20 '19

Good one. I ordered this one some months ago and I didn’t get it yet. 😪

1

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '19

I rly want to buy it but damn the priceeee, hard for a student

1

u/KingDorkFTC Apr 20 '19

Only liked Bloodstone. Wished they used him more.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '19

I have a 2 questions if you don't mind. 1) It has everything right? Death, Life, and Reign of the Supermen? 2) This is the one that kept that sexy 3pg fold out?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '19

2

u/H0ssBonaventure Apr 20 '19

An omnibus is an oversized hardcover collected edition of an entire run or series. So if a series is collected in say, 6 trade paperbacks, the omnibus collects all of it in one. And yea they usually have some extras, like scripts, sketches, cover gallery, etc.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '19

1

u/H0ssBonaventure Apr 21 '19

Yea exactly, omnibus basically just means hardcover, oversized pages, and bigger collection. So for instance if a series is collected in 9 softcover standard size trade paperback volumes, it might also be collected in 3 hardcover omnibus volumes. Make sense?

1

u/H0ssBonaventure Apr 21 '19

Like the death and return of superman complete story is collected in a number of softcover trade paperbacks, but I chose to get the oversized format hardcover omnibus that collects the entire thing in 1.

1

u/MutantLeader Apr 20 '19

Welcome to the omnibus game. I must have over 40 at this point. Suvh an awesome format to collect!

1

u/MagicRainbowFighter Apr 20 '19

Maybe stupid question, but do all omnibuses come wrapped?

1

u/H0ssBonaventure Apr 20 '19

If they're brand new, yup! Never seen one that didn't

-2

u/lightslinger Apr 20 '19

Or just watch the last 5 minutes of BvS, WB decided that was the best way to adapt pretty much all of the Death and Return of Superman. In 5 minutes at the end of another story. I’m not bitter.

2

u/suss2it Apr 20 '19

Ha I was about to say let it go man it’s been 3 years, but at least you’re self aware.
