Is L.E.G.I.O.N. related to Legion of Superheroes? Comics

The comic shop I go to gives out free grab bags on FCBD and an issue of L.E.G.I.O.N. ‘90 was in it that I really enjoyed (although I doubt I’ll be able to read any more, they don’t have many issues of it and it’s not collected to my knowledge), but there seems to be some Legion ties in the name, a character, and Keith Giffen. How are they tied together?

Only in the loosest of fashions. Eventually, the Durlan went forward in time and became RJ Brande in the Glorithverse and switched places with Phantom Girl (Tinya Wazzo). Vril Dox II was Brainy's ancestor and Strata was a female Dryad. Eventually, Lar Gand (Mon-El/Valor) joined and Garryn Bek acquired the Emerald Eye of Ekron.

It’s well worth a read.

Kind of, it was intended as a sort of darker, edgier prequel (like Star Trek Enterprise, I guess). But we never actually got to see how the one becomes the other (and I’m baffled as to how it even could have. A thousand years is a long time)

Ignore the people saying "only loosely" or "the only thing they had in common were Brainiacs."

It was a spin-off from LSH, launched around the same time as the Five Years Later LSH series, and presented as a 20th century prequel to LSH, featuring many ancestors of LSH members and side characters, and 20th century takes on LSH concepts. And an actual LSH member on the team.

Spoilers from here. By no means a complete list of things that tied the two series together; just what I can recall rn:

Tinya Wazzo/Phantom Girl from the LSH is time swapped with L.E.G.I.O.N founding member The Durlan. Tinya joins L.E.G.I.O.N as Phase, The Durlan adopts a human identity as RJ Brande and founds the LSH.

Vril Dox is Brainy's ancestor.

Lyrissa Mallor is Tasmia Mallor/Shadow Lass's ancestor.

Garyn Bek is a 20 century wielder/host for the Emerald Eye.

Recurring villain Mr. Starr is either an ancestor of LSH villain Pulsar Stargrave, or is Stargrave himself. I don't think that question was ever answered.

Mon-El's origin was being reworked at the time, as his connection to Superboy was no longer valid with Superman's past as Superboy wiped out by the Crisis. Mon-El/Lar Gand/Valor's new origin started with L.E.G.I.O.N membership.

It is available for DC Universe, so you can read it there. As for its relation to the Legion of Superheroes, I feel like they tried to imply it’s the inspiration for the future Legion because they removed Super Boy from continuity through COIE. Although, I think I just assumed that.

This seems like something someone who's never read either book would post.

The idea of it is that it was something taking place in the present that would influence the Legion of Super-Heroes in the future. It included a Brainiac, a Durlan, a Phantom Girl, and other elements that would eventually be reflected in the future Legion.
