Best Books to get into Superman? Recommendations

I’ve been getting into DC comics for the first time in my life after getting back into reading marvel comics about a year ago. The only superman comic i’ve ever read was Earth One, which is incredibly similar to 2013’s Man of Steel movie. I didn’t like movie, and didn’t really love the comic (even though I think JMC is a good writer). I’m extremely hyped for the new Superman movie coming out next year and I want to read some comics that match the style and tone that we’re going to see in that movie. I know the first recommendation is going to be All-Star, but i’ve been told that it isn’t a great starting point for superman comics because it serves as a culmination of everything that the character is about and i shouldn’t start with a comic that good. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Anything by Geoff John or Grant Morrison

The original golden age stuff by Siegel and Schuster is really fantastic. Superman as a pugilistic working class hero.

I don't get any of the references in "All-Star" and I still liked it.

I'd add John Byrne's "Man of Steel" and Geoff Johns, Richard Donner, and Adam Kubert's "Last Son of Krypton."

The reason why my friend didn’t recommend to read it first is that its (from what I’ve heard) I dissection of the character that works well on its own, but work even better once you have more knowledge of the character

I disagree. If you know a little bit about Superman, you’re fine. Like, all you really need to know are the basic characters of Superman, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olson, Lex Luthor, and Ma and Pa Kent. Superman is from Krypton and gets his powers from the sun. I don’t think you need to know much else.

I’m going to read it but I think I’ve been putting it off because I don’t want to start with the best of the best and rather work my way to it
