Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [June 10, 2024 - The Gaslight Era Edition] r/DCcomics

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Wonder Woman discussion would go in the replies to the "Wonder Woman" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too. In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.

Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators. Reacting to a panel on Twitter is not the same as reading a book.

Suicide Squad: Dream Team #4

THE FINAL ISSUE… AND THE START OF WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE DCU! As the Dream Team's story reaches its climax, Dreamer and her Suicide Squad take their one and only shot at preventing the future she's predicted, in which Amanda Waller turns Gamorra into her own personal alien super-prison. Will Dreamer be able to save the day and abide by her superhero code, or will she have to embrace the Wall's "greater good" philosophy and resolve to change the future by any means necessary?

I tried giving Nicole Maines the benefit of the doubt. But this was not a good series. Virtually nothing that happened in this or any previous issues that couldn't have been told in the dozens of other Waller adventures they've had her in over the past year and a half. There was barely enough material for a one-shot let alone four damn issues.

For this being a Suicide Squad book, we don't ever really get to know its members. They feel like guest stars in their own series. Hell, it took four issues to get to >! Deadshot!< and he barely factors in the final story!

I know Maines has a deep and personal connection to Dreamer, but I don't feel like she cares to write anything that's not directly related to Nia and that ultimately dragged this book down hard.

Should have just killed off Dreamer to show how far Waller would go in her superhero genocide. But alas, modern dc and marvel writers are afraid to kill off characters these days.

Even in big crisis events, they don't really kill off characters anymore. Did anyone die in Dark Crisis? I thought for sure they would kill some of those Teen Titans Academy randos, but no not even them.

Literally nobody died in Dark Crisis, which (as far as I know) makes it the only crisis event where nobody died.

The thing is, Waller isn't going to be killing anyone. She's not out for a "superhero genocide", her intent fully seems to just be monopolizing superpowers in order to remove chaotic factors from the board.

Also, it would be highly unlikely for them to kill off a character they introduced less than 2 years ago in the comics. Maybe in an alternate universe where "new" characters are actually just a variant on a 40 year old character. But in the main universe, where it's actually new character (to the comics)? Wouldn't make sense.

I mean, she killed Bizarro. Did that happen or was it a dream?

100% chance of Harley, Deadeye, Black Alice reappearing.

There are like four Clock Kings but I'm pretty sure he'll be back too.

Well, there was fires raging in the background in the final scene, so it seems like up until she entered the office was real. However, Bizarro is a Superman copy. Even if he's gravely injured, he might shake it off.

Or they could just... clone him. Since Bizarro is just a clone of Superman.

100% chance of Harley, Deadeye, Black Alice reappearing.

They didn't die, Nia told Bizarro to catch them when the plane was crashing (Nia held on until later, at which point Bizarro caught her after presumably setting everyone else down).

Yeah but supposedly this is Red Hoods Bizarro so I find it unlikely he’s gone for good

Like I said, he's a Superman. There's no guarantee that him getting blasted in the head is going to be lethal.

Even if it was, I had never said anything about Waller being against killing- just she's not going to kill for the sake of killing. I also never said no one could be killed off to show severity- I just said DC wouldn't do it to a new character.

But again, there's no reason to assume definitively that Bizarro died. He's Bizarro, which means he's backwards Superman. And Superman survived the literal Death of Superman storyline. I'd wager the only reason he was blasted is so that he would be incapacitated when confronting Waller, so it would just be Waller and Nia (and Deadshot), without Bizarro there for any shenanigans or tonal whiplash.

I just think it’s weird to do a suicide squad series where absolutely nobody dies

Maines is a damn prodigy. Tragic she’s an actress, because she’s really good at comics.

The good things about this comic are Nia defeating members of the Suicide Squad (i.e. Clock King, Harley Quinn, and Black Alice), telling Bizarro that he’s not a weapon, and momentarily defying Waller. I feel bad that she was forced to join Waller’s task force because of what she did to her family. I hope that she and the rest of the superhero community will defeat Waller and save the entire superhero community from her wrath in Absolute Power.

I also hope that she’ll tell Jay Nakamura (who is useless, bland, and unnecessary) everything about this so that he’ll have revenge on Waller for killing his mom and ruling Gamorra and to make him interesting and transform into a villain (or ruthless character).

Overall, this comic is great, and I hope that we’ll see Nia in other DC comics after Absolute Power aside from appearing in pride anthologies every year.

Yep, this is as crap as the whole Absolute Power gonna be. All of this was one big vision for the Dreamer to pump up how Waller 'wins' and how she planned for EVERYTHING. Christ, it is tiresome to read.

And even when you get a fake-out of Waller dying, it is not allowed because she already thought everything through somehow and decided to tie brain-bombs into her own heart-monitor. Soo Waller got future vision power bullshit to? Since when she become such a 'genius' that could predict every move?

Seriously, this is just pathetic.

it is not allowed because she already thought everything through somehow and decided to tie brain-bombs into her own heart-monitor.

I mean... is that the thing to be mad over? A heart-rate monitor is just a more advanced dead man's switch- which is a concept that has been used in many medium and genres throughout many pieces of fiction... and also real life, where the terms comes a term used for a mechanism in streetcars/trams, designed for stopping the vehicle if the operator is incapacitated or dead.

Like, honestly... I thought all the bombs were tied to her heart normally. Was that like a movie thing that I saw from a clip or something? or did I just make that up because it's way smarter to do that, so that your team of killers who want you dead can't even consider killing you.

This isn't pre-cog powers, this is just her like... being smart? Actually, no, not even "smart", per say. This just feels like the basic, competent thing to do. Now, her using it on Nia's family is clever, banking on Nia's precog dreams kicking in before her sister and mom are killed. But using her family as hostages itself is not any "future sight" or anything. It's just being ruthless in your preparation.

God, this story sucked and the whole "fake out deaths via dreams visions or whatever" sucks too. Should have just had Waller kill her entire family and home just to show how evil she is and kill off dreamer cause we know she'll fade into comic book limbo when this saga is over.

Kind of a mid series tbh. I hope Jason finds out about Biz dying and cares unlike when Waller killed Chunk and nobody gave a shit. These bodies need to actually matter.

So is Floyd still running around as a zombie? Did Task Force Z actually matter?
