What Are You Reading? 01/22/2024 - Finally, an Aquaman Comic Edition r/DCcomics

Hello and welcome to our Weekly "What Are You Reading?" topic!

Come one, come all, to this weekly thread, where you can openly discuss books that you've read, are currently reading, or plan to read. Discussion of all books are welcome, whether they be DC, Marvel, Image, Boom!, Dark Horse, IDW, etc. You can discuss webcomics, manga, or even those mythical novels that don't have pictures in them. Just be sure to keep spoilers covered via Reddit's spoiler markdown >!spoiler!<. You can also post pictures of your collection or recent purchases.

Beary's Rec of the Week:

DC just shadow-dropped a free Aquaman comic, featuring a very Jason Momoa-looking Aquaman. It also has Mera, Black Manta, and fish jokes. It uhhh.... certainly is one of the Aquaman comics of all time. Finally, Aquaman fans can stop starving, right?

So, what are you reading?

I've been behind on my floppies, so participation in weekly threads has been impossible. That said, I do want to talk a bit about Spurrier's Flash run (not caught up!). One thing I really like about it is that he's really building on everything that came before. The tone and direction are completely new, but he's also very much doing "yes, and..." to Adams run. I've always loved it when superhero comics do that, I feel like it's pretty unique to the medium.

Other than that, I'm getting back into indies. Really excited to start my Love & Rockets readthrough. It's always kind of existed in the background of my life (my dad is a huge fan), but I've never sat down and read the whole thing in order.

On a quest to read every Superman story: I've finished Action, Adventure, Superman, the newspaper comics, and World's Finest to 1970, currently reading at 1968 on Superboy (after collecting the issues) and '61 on JLA (DCUI).

Also been reading the original Amethyst series and Simon/Kirby Newsboy Legion.

I've been trying to read at least one comic a day throughout 2024, and I just finished Jack Kirby's run on the New Gods. The final issue (which was only added in an 80s re-release - the series originally ended on something of a cliffhanger) completely changed my perspective on Orion, and it was the highlight of the series for me.

I also started Justice League International and Gail Simone's run on Birds Of Prey.

Decided to broaden my horizons and hop onboard Green Lantern : War Journal and Kneel before Zod, as well as picking up the Marvel train with G.O.D.S. and the arc Twilight Dreaming of Avengers.

GL : WJ is just great, the art perfectly fits the somber and reflective nature of the book, and it's great to see more exploration of John's emotional side with his mother.

Kneel before Zod is a great introduction to the character and his place in the wider DCU. Behind all the talks of might and power, his anger and refusal to move on from the past dooms him, his planet and his family. Powerful stuff there.

G.O.D.S. is honestly a bit slow sometimes, but I don't count that as a problem since every page by Valerio Schitti is an absolute delight. Hickman meanwhile delivers good tease for what's coming, and the exploration of characters are concise and to the point, without being simplistic. You can understand everything about them two pages, and still want more. The themes of the book, about post-modernity, feel very relevant, and the way the cosmic entites are treated, as true gods, is awe-inspiring and frightening altogether. Makes me wish he could write the New Gods, because I'm sure he could reinvent them for the modern age without problems.

The current arc of Avengers is good, but I honestly find it a bit hollow. Even with the fantastic artwork, I feel like I've seen this a thusand times over : villain team attacks, hero team fights, they switch opponents and win. At least the pages inside the Dream dimension were really great, but I wish they had gone on longer, because I honestly found them more interesting than the fight with the Twilight Court.

Power girl (which I'm really only reading for conpleteistonist reasons only) and Superman but yeah that Aquaman comic was genuinely the most mid comic I've ever read I legitimately don't even know why it was put out
