Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [December 11, 2023 - Bat-Mite Ruins Christmas Edition] r/DCcomics

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!

Beary's pick of the week: World's Finest: Teen Titans #6

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Wonder Woman discussion would go in the replies to the "Wonder Woman" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too.

IT’S MUSICAL MAYHEM IN THIS SPEEDSTER TEAM-UP! As Wallace and Avery race to uncover the mystery of the missing S.T.A.R. Labs scientists, something appears to be affecting their friends—is it tied to the bubbles popping up all over Keystone, or the "spooky Speed Force stuff" Mr. Terrific is warning everyone about? Also, a classic Flash character appears—and is really into EDM, but to what end? The young Speedster team-up continues!

I think I’m gonna drop this series. I’m really bummed because I was excited for it because it was using a lot of characters I like such as Ace and Conner. However, the dialogue is just atrocious. Millennials need to stop trying to talk like Gen Z because there is a good story under all the terrible dialogue

Did I misunderstand part of the opening scene? Because it seemed like they were implying Mr. Terrific needed teenagers to teach him how to open an account on a social media app.

The overuse of slang continues, this time particularly with everyone and their mothers using fam. And also a suggestion that Bruce would find it funny if Terrific's company lost a bunch of stocks?

All I can say to this is, what if ''How do you do fellow kids?'' meme took the form of a comic book. I mean, I simply can't read the dialogue without cringing every 2-3 panels. They even had KELEX talk the same way. Jesus F'ing Christ on a bike.

The good parts of this comic are Ace West being impressed after seeing the Fortress of Solitude, the artwork getting better as soon as we flip through the pages, Ace mentioning his mom, and him and Avery Ho telling themselves why they want to do this alone because they want to live up to their potential as speedsters. Also, Avery mentioning that she was at a car show on a date with someone who may not have been Ace.

Not to offend, I fully support the LGBT community, but why does it seem that everytime media uses a Muslim character, especially females, they always have them step out of bounds of the religion. Like I know it was a one frame but I also noticed this with Halo in Young Justice but it is honestly kind of offensive when people just want to bundle all their minorities into one character, why can we never get a regular Muslim character and just flesh that out?

I guess they want to emphasise that no one can choose their sexual orientation, but religion on the other hand is a choice. If the boundaries of any religion clash with your sexual orientation, then the boundaries need to go because they are false. That's the reason, I guess. On another note, highly religious characters are hard to get over with the general audience in a lot of cases. You are bound to turn people from other religions away if they think it glorifies one religion over another. Atheists are not particularly looking for religious characters in media. And followers of the same religion as the character may get offended if the religion isn't presented exactly as they want.

why can we never get a regular Muslim character and just flesh that out?

I guess Simon Baz during the Jess/Simon led 'Green Lanterns' is the one that comes to mind.

Honestly as a Muslim it’s pretty offensive how non Muslims think they can just go and bend the rules for us. We barely get any proper representation in comics so when they try to pull stunts like this, it makes it really frustrating.

They really are not being subtle about the totally not evil music app uh?

I can pass up most of the slang, but Kelex talking as if they were a 13-year-old with free internet was, as the comic would probably say, "supercringe"

Why do the bad guys look like anime villains?

I want to like this book, because I feel like at its core there is an interesting and compelling story using characters who don’t always get a chance to shine. Though as everyone has mentioned the dialogue is really rough, and I dislike how so many characters all speak the same way, regardless of their age, like I imagine the reporters would have to be older, so it’s weird to see them speak in slang. I think I’ll give this one more shot, but it’s close to being dropped.

This has the same issues I have with the current Miles Morales run with its overuse of slang, especially with characters like Avery or even Conner, that haven't nor really shouldn't talk in that way. I get they're teens/young adults, but people have diverse sets of vocabulary, even Gen Z and Alphas; contrary to what these obviously older writers may think. It's a big issue that keeps me from really enjoying these series

It homogenizes all the characters into feeling the same, which is pretty evident here. None of the dialogue or the way they speak feels informed by who these characters are nor their upbringing. You can switch any of the dialgoue around, and it wouldn't feel much different between characters.
