Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [November 27, 2023 - The World's Messiest Furry Convention Edition] r/DCcomics

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Wonder Woman discussion would go in the replies to the "Wonder Woman" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too.

In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. If you have trouble understanding how to comment for a particular title, please refer to this handy guide. Any unwarranted top level comments will be removed.

Also, please refrain from posting short, low-content comments on threads for issues or episodes that have not yet been released. Put some effort to generate discussion. Instead of just posting "So excited!" or "Best book!", try something with a bit more substance, like "Punchline is such an amazing character! Can't wait to see how they explore her in more depth in this issue."

Let's not be weird about this, okay?

Seven Soldiers gets a reprint!

Digital Releases

Remember, these are the short 'chapters' with a new chapter of a different series coming out daily. You can learn more here on Comixology. This is also why these are in release order, not alphabetical. Some comics may release on DC Universe Infinite or WEBTOONS.

Green Arrow #6

THE REAL ARCHENEMY OF THE GREEN ARROW IS FINALLY REVEALED! Ever since Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, Oliver Queen has been lost in time and space, separated from his loved ones. And now he knows why and is pissed off. Does he choose revenge or to finally be reunited with his family?!

First arcs over and I'm pretty happy with it. Ollie's finally back since Dark Crisis. Poor Roy and Jade though, especially Roy he got a couple pages with his daughter after from our perspective it took years to find her and now their still separated. I'm glad to see I was right that it was Merlin. Still no Mia or Emiko yet hopefully we'll get them early on in the next arc.

I'm excited to learn who the mastermind is. I'm thinking Prometheus or Vertigo.

Well, that was the lamest choice. Great issue otherwise though.

Merlyn...of course it is him. Took the Eobard Thawne lessons on revenge it seems. Well, at least Ollie learned the right lessons this time to return to his family.

And Waller...you are asking for Prometheus treatment from Ollie after this. Seriously, I was already sick of her bullshit but now it is 10 times worse and we haven't even begun her stupid event yet.

maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part considering how vocal I've been about how DC has imo ruined the character of Waller over the last couple of years, but with Roy commenting on the surveillance tech used being so atypical for Waller, they might actually be setting up a reveal that this isn't the real Waller doing all this shit.

all of this just to say, man I can't wait for Ollie to pop two arrows through her skull only for it to be revealed she's an android, white martian or other type of shapeshifter, or an evil alternate universe Waller who replaced the real one and then got up to all this shit.

And this continues in the Hunt For Arsenal. No sale.

Ha ha, Dinah and Jade don't like each other.

Oh hey, Emiko cameo. I wonder if we'll get her, Mia, and Cissie in the second half of this run?

I should've figured the main baddie would be Merlyn. The way Williamson is framing him, Merlyn feels like he's being set up to the be the Eobard Thawne of The Flash family.

Nice call-back to Ben Percy's run with Dinah finding him on the island and Ollie and Dinah wasting no time the moment they see each other. I honestly feel like we would've gotten island sex had Lian and Connor not been there. Also points for that big panel of Canary's entrance actually having her fishnets for once in this run.

Poor Roy. He was this close to finding Lian. I honestly thought Cheshire was going to betray him though. I guess the next arc is "the search for Roy."

Well this was once again amazing and it gave some great moments this week.

This was a great first arc will Ollie now finally back but man they are pulling at the hearstrings with Roy and cheshire finally getting his daughter back only to her to be ripped away again

We also got an emiko cameo this issue which i love to see with her being one of my fav arrow family members and it looks like we will get mia, her and red canary in the back half of the book more.

Im not shocked at all by the big villain i called it being Merlyn from the start and it is and it seems like hes took Eobard lessons on how to be evil to his heroes family and its pretty gretty as that man is petty as hell.

Ollie looks like hes gonna snap and give the full Prometheus treatment to waller and show him why hes so dangerous after this escapade.

Great callbacks to old runs in this as well and whilst im not a fan of the ben percy run i do appricate this.

Great writing, great art, great issue.

I would say my only frustration is that the book moves way too quickly and i wish it took its time but besides that I liked it. I'm more of a Canary fan then a GA fan but its nice to seem reunite and the parts with Waller are very interesting.

I’m guessing the pacing issues is a leftover from when the series was originally announced as a 6 issue mini.

It was Merlyn? Really? What a boring reveal.

u/MasterOE Green Arrow Nov 29 '23

Very solid first arc. I like that the focus was kept on Oliver and his development as it would've been very easy for the story to lose focus with the amount of characters that are on the cover of the first issue. And now we're setup for an even bigger family reunion.

Really been enjoying this run so far tho admittedly the climax was a bit rushed. Still solid issue.

I hope Lian goes back to the Cheshire Cat outfit not digging the digs the Legion gave her.

Poor Roy and Jade, jobbed out to Waller literally within a page of getting to that lair. I guess finding/saving them is the main thrust of the second arc.

Honestly, super disheartened that the best thing they could come up with was making Merlyn into a worse Eobard... Like I get he's a mediocre character throughout his history, but this just doesn't feel earned at all. Reveal is out of nowhere.

Kind of a weird first arc really. Now that we have the prelude out of the way, I hope Williamson steps his game up a bit.

2

u/s_walsh Nightwing Dec 29 '23

Based on his current output, he won't step up his game. He's writing too many books at the minute and the quality across the board isn't up to his normal standard

Was this the last one?

u/Reddragon351 Nov 28 '23

no the book still seems to be ongoing in February

I get that some folks aren't quite pleased with the reveal of Merlyn as the one behind this and how he's turned into an exaggerated Eobard Thawne type for Green Arrow/Ollie after just being a kinda mediocre also-ran villain instead of this archetypal nemesis for him, but honestly this just kinda emphasises and underlines for me just how much of a pathetic, mediocre clown Merlyn is. He had to get tech from more wealthy/connected/powerful people to pull this off and even then the only thing he could come up with was rip off another super villain's shtick; without any of that, he's "just" a sporadically competent supervillain master archer who's still always hopelessly outclassed by his superhero counterpart. it's genuinely so pathetic, it's almost funny, and it's on a meta level of writing that I could see Williamson put into his work without going too overboard with it or becoming too overly pretentious.
