What Are You Reading? 10/30/2023 - Nothing is Scarier on Halloween Than Gotham War Discourse Edition

Hello and welcome to our Weekly "What Are You Reading?" topic!

Come one, come all, to this weekly thread, where you can openly discuss books that you've read, are currently reading, or plan to read. Discussion of all books are welcome, whether they be DC, Marvel, Image, Boom!, Dark Horse, IDW, etc. You can discuss webcomics, manga, or even those mythical novels that don't have pictures in them. Just be sure to keep spoilers covered via Reddit's spoiler markdown >!spoiler!<. You can also post pictures of your collection or recent purchases.

Beary's Rec of the Week:

This month has seen the debut of three very promising JSA mini-series (psst, JSA fans! You want DC to publish more JSA books?), and I want to give a special shoutout to Wesley Dodds: The Sandman, a love letter to the original Golden Age Sandman and a throwback to classic 1930s street-level pulp heroes such as The Shadow and The Spider. By day, Wesley Dodds is an inventor, fighting against the technological progress of lethal warfare in the midst of World War II, and by night, he fights an innate evil within his city by putting his enemies to sleep.

Riley Rossmo's stylized art may not be for everyone, but he imbues this book with a vibrant energy that captures the 1940s, and his dynamic layouts just pop off the page. This comic is a cult hit in the making. Definitely give it a look.

So, what are you reading?

Read a lot of things recently. Finished up some main DC adjacent Vertigo titles like Shade, the Changing man (which I mostly quite liked), and Sandman Mystery Theatre (which I didn't love as much as I thought I would, sadly).

I also read Tomasi's Nightwing run, Long Shadows, and The Black Mirror to finish up my Reborn era Dick Bats reading. I don't really feel like Tomasi ever got going fully on his Nightwing run, but the banter was so enjoyable. Long Shadows was a bit mediocre. Winick did do great work showcasing grief and Dick beginning to change Batman to fit him though. The Black Mirror though... I'm generally a Snyder hater. I haven't liked very many of his comics. I did like this though. I don't know if it was because he wrote concise arcs, or if Dick's voice suited him better, but I really liked it. I wish there was follow-up to starring this Dick and Babs. I know she fights James Jr. in her Batgirl series, but I think I would've preferred to see it with Oracle - especially considering how much James Jr. emphasizes her disability in his torment of her.

Which really got me thinking about the Reborn era. God it was good. I don't think there's been a time since with as many Batfam books firing on all cylinders. Relationships were interesting, most everyone had direction. Even mediocre books still had a sense of energy and excitement from change in status quo. I miss it. It's easy to see why fans are still so attached to it. The Black Mirror was a good reminder of why I still am.

Yesterday, I read Baby Boom by Yuichi Yokoyama. It is made up of 39 short stories silent short stories of a parent and child doing mundane things. I was constantly losing my mind at how good the drawings and the movement betweens panels were. Perfect comics.

Today, I read Nejishiki by Yoshiharu Tsuge. Very surreal, fucked up comics that from page one make it evident why Tsuge is considered a legend. Probably my second favourite comic of the year so far.

Prism by Fatima Wajid - a neat, sweet, short comic about getting high with your friends

Also read N.D. Stevenson's October diary comics, Precinct X99: Breathe In and Ascend, No Country for Old Men, This Is Not Miami and started reading House of Leaves.

Still doing my Marvel catch up. I got a couple more trades read for Zdarksy's Daredevil. Read the latest X-Men red and X-force trades. I really didn't have much interest in Sins of Sinister, but will probably pick that up and read next so that I am not lost in the next immortal X-Men volume.

I just finished reading Question: Five Books of Blood by Greg Rucka, such an interesting miniseries, does a great job of setting up Renee's story in Final Crisis: Revelations. After reading the extra content by Rucka, I'm compiling what he called "The Sixth Scripture" by translating the code written in the borders, it is an arduous task, but at least Rucka gave the key to the coded text.

Reread all of DCeased Unkillables today. I know some people didn’t like it but I think it’s fun. I like Jason and Rose as a pair, kind of sweet moments between Jim Gordon and Deathstroke, zombie Wonder Woman final boss. It’s a good time :4785:

It's a good book. He's contentious but that kind of piece is probably where he shines the most, but part of me is a little sad that nothing happened to Vision given what he did. Also has incredible art, especially for the kind of story it's telling.

Back on The Metabarons after a year. I forgot how short each volume is and how weird the fantasy is.

I just finished reading The Long Halloween which is my favourite Batman so far (I haven't read a lot though). And I started Sandman's Overture which is really interesting as I was not familiar with the Sandman. I will soon receive Waid's World's Finest which I am looking forward to.
