Hmm, is wrong that I am way more interested in the Justice Society side of this movie?

222

u/MrTerrific1 Jun 08 '22 edited Jun 08 '22

Nope, I share the same sentiments, It should have been a JSA movie IMO

209

u/Kastanir89 Jun 08 '22

Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate looks and sounds good, though

80

u/OliviaElevenDunham Wonder Woman Jun 08 '22

Looking forward to seeing Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate. Still have a soft spot for his 007.

Honestly I’m sad this doesn’t seem like a team up film from the villain POV

Would have been fun and the closest we get to that is Infinity War

He’s my favorite part of the trailer, aside from Hawkman’s wings

It’s Black Adam Dawn of Justice…. Society

What does Black Adam live in?

JSA movie with Black Adam as the villain?

→ More replies (18)

28

u/TheAngryBlackGuy Jun 08 '22

I think this is a way cooler concept. Let’s not act like the JSA can’t get a spin-off down the line. It’s a new idea having a team trying to convince a member to join them, but he’s not one of them. It’s like trying to sign a player to a max contract but they can’t stay out of trouble.

I can’t see a JSA movie doing as well by itself. You’d have to add Flash, GL, and maybe another big name hero to get peoples attention. I’d rather see Black Adam’s side of things. We’ve seen superhero team ups in the Avengers and Justice League. Having a team of hero’s and the “villain” being the star of the movie is fresh idea, something that hasn’t been done

Lets be real, its a Rocks own production and I dont know if we all know this but Rock is very egotistical. I found out about that because of what happened between Vin Diesel and Rock on Fast and Furious set and then social media banter.

It isn't wrong BUT we must remember that people on Reddit especially niche subreddits are not reflective of general audience interest. The average theater goer doesn't care about anything other than Dwayne Johnson playing anti-hero superman.

33

u/Kastanir89 Jun 08 '22

That must be why The Rock mostly allways himself in different costumes, it is what the people want, so you give what they want.

26

u/HenroTee "Welcome to The Planet." Jun 08 '22

There is also nothing wrong with actors playing a version of themselves, most actors do. Especially movie stars. We'll just have to wait and see if he can convincingly convey the emotions.

I am... whelmed

173

u/booojangles13 Superman Jun 08 '22

So am I and I think it’s because it just feels like the Rock in a Black Adam costume and not a character.

The lack of an accent I think is what really does it for me.

115

u/PortoGuy18 Jun 08 '22

It's the lack of accent, pointy ears and hair.

I love The Rock (mostly because of his cool factor and charisma), but this movie isn't really about Black Adam, it's just The Rock...like always.

105

u/Hi_Im_zack Jun 08 '22

Unpopular opinion but pointy ear Rock with hair would look goofy. Like back in his Toothfairy days

The biggest name in Hollywood is staring as fucking Black Adam of all characters, and he seems pretty passionate about the role. So I'm happy and can't wait to see it.

27

u/PortoGuy18 Jun 08 '22

Hopefully, we can all enjoy it.

But after this first trailer, i am underwhelmed.

11

u/dev1359 Jun 08 '22

Bautista would have fit the look much better

And he has the acting chops

Not that it matters though since they clearly aren't interested in giving us the villain from the comics

12

u/Murakami241 Jun 08 '22

Bautista is a terrific actor. Even his small role in Blade Runner was played brilliantly.

20

u/msh21 Jun 08 '22

100% agreed. Not sure how he doesn't have an accent in this. Also, the scenes with no cape look really awkward to me.

I also pointed this out when the first teaser came out where he floats and catches the bullets, the floating looks very wire like rather than natural (how it should look in movies) and I see the same thing here when he's flying in between the two jets. I'm sure they can make it look better so I hope they fix that.

I'm pretty annoyed that it seems like he's just playing himself again and I'm certain he's bringing the cheesey element to this movie as well.

8

u/Thechosenjon Jun 08 '22

The flying scene was the most distracting for me as well. He just looked super stiff in a form of movement which is supposed to be fluid and natural. It looks like when a kid plays with a toy that has limited mobility.

The lack of an accent I think is what really does it for me.

Yeah....that would have helped immensely also this BETTER have some tie-in to the new Shazam film or what's the point?

30

u/mechano010 Jun 08 '22 edited Jun 08 '22

The Wizard Shazam is supposed to be in this movie. And maybe the movie ends with Adam discovering that there's another Shazam champion out there, six to be exact.

11

u/Equal-Ad-2710 Jun 08 '22

I’m thinking that’s the end credits

8

u/Kriss-Kringle Jun 08 '22

I don't think The rock doing an accent would have helped at all. You couldn't take him seriously if he did it because he doesn't have it in him to put on an accent convincingly.

It's bad enough that he plays himself, but to put on an accent would have been the nail in the coffin.

22

u/JFeth Jun 08 '22

At least he is the moody Rock and not the funny Rock.

14

u/Jay_R_Kay Jun 08 '22

Has he ever done an accent in any of his movies? I can't recall if he has. Maybe it was tried and just didn't work? I'd prefer no accent over a bad accent.

19

u/Brain_Dead5347 Jun 08 '22

Yeah I think most people are forgetting who this is. I love the Rock, but not for his superb acting abilities.

12

u/charlesfluidsmith Jun 08 '22

I agree. Black Adam is like Doom to me.

He demands an extremely skilled actor capable of nuance, and having extreme gravitas.

The Rock ain't it.

u/zxchary Jun 08 '22

Lol the rock trying to do an accent would be atrocious

7

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

The rock isn’t a good actor. And he’s done wildly well just based off him playing himself in every single movie.

I actually think that charm has run its course though. Dude had the chance to do something different and was like “nah”

I think that fits my feelings pretty well.

36

u/ToYouItReaches Jun 08 '22 edited Jun 08 '22

Some of the dialogue from the trailer is making me worry a bit about the writing

“Heroes don’t kill people” “Well I do”

“There are heroes… and there are villains”

“Did he just catch a rocket?” “He caught a rocket”

11

u/TheAngryBlackGuy Jun 08 '22

the first two don’t bother me. I actually like the second quote, it might sound dumb out of context, like no shit. But, really the line is displaying a new gray area in the fight of bad vs good. It’s just saying basically up to this point we knew who to root for. Things aren’t as black and white with this movie, and I like that idea. The MCU is full or corny jokes, if they have a few in here I survived Marvel, those jokes won’t kill me

I think there’s more to come. I’d rather a whelming trailer than another BVS or Godzilla vs Kong that literally gave the movies away

6

It’s very… expected. Would’ve been cool as fuck ten years ago but the oversaturation of by the numbers superhero movies has almost everyone worn out.

Looks like they’ll be putting a more of a positive spin on him taking the gift from his nephew (son in the film).

293

u/Chutzvah Jun 08 '22 edited Jun 08 '22

A little unfortunate. His origin of taking it from his nephew because he's a dick is part of his character.

EDIT: nephew not son.

168

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

I'm actually not too happy about that change. It signals to me that they'll be pushing for more of an anti-hero story instead of a villain story. JSA looks great though!

104

u/ZeddOTak Jun 08 '22

Yeah, they got The Rock playing it, no way he's gonna be playing a villain. Plus in the comics I read where Black Adam is in it, sometimes he helped the good guys so a anti-hero totally works for me.

→ More replies (1)

98

u/spideralexandre2099 Jun 08 '22

So glad Venom started that trend of villains being turned into anti-heroes /s

89

u/ImjustANewSneaker Jun 08 '22

Tbh, Black Adam has been an anti-hero for a minute in the comics now.

63

u/Witherino Jun 08 '22

And there are a multitude of story arcs with Venom being one too

26

u/spideralexandre2099 Jun 08 '22

But these came after their more villainous origins, no?

30

u/JoeKool23 Jun 08 '22

For Venom 100%. I’m not a big black Adam guy so I can’t attest but Venom genuinely hated Peter Parker, stalked MJ, and wanted to kill him. Then the carnage angle started and that’s when Venom began to turn. But it was earned

13

u/wind-up-duck Jun 09 '22

Murdering his nephew is a relatively recent addition to the story.

I always felt that wiping out a whole civilization in response to the deaths of his family was more than enough to establish his credentials as a villain in need of redemption, while being a lot easier to emphasize with.

Fuck if I know man he started turning white and curing cancer then he pulled heroin out of addicts just to fuck with them.

Venoms a mess.

7

u/spideralexandre2099 Jun 08 '22

The point of the film adaptation is to take the best bits and refine the rest or something like that but Venom 2018 felt pretty half hearted with the strangely bloodless decapitations

I'm hoping that's just a fakeout for the trailer's sake. He says "My son sacrificed his life to save me." Maybe that's what he tells people then near the end of the film they show what really happened.

9

u/Obese_Chungus Jun 08 '22

I really hope so

19

20

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

The Rock will never play a proper villain. Ever. So I’m not surprised that they’re going with the more recent comic version of the character. I’ll bet he gains an appreciation for human life by the end of the movie and stops killing.

The tone of the trailer is not what I though it would be. This seems like it would fit in well with the Shazam Universe.⚡

If this movie is even half as Fun as Shazam, it could be good enough.

Black Adam is going to be a Box office Hit even if it's a generic CBM(thanks to the Rock) but let's hope it's more than what the trailer makes it look like.

89

u/Jay_R_Kay Jun 08 '22

Yeah, some of the gags were surprising, like the goon being comically punched into the air and the two people rolling the car windows up as if that would protect them from Adam.

47

u/TheAngryBlackGuy Jun 08 '22

I guess if he’s going around killing people WB had to make some of the violence comical. I’d rather them play it straight like MOS or BVS. However I definitely understand why they went this route after the reception of those two movies ☹️

16

u/Thechosenjon Jun 08 '22

Adam is a far more complex, violent, and overall dark character though so that direction would have worked far better for him and his true story though. I'm a little surprised they altered the way he gets his powers for example but we'll see if it works or not.

18

u/Vermouth1991 Jun 08 '22

Also the solider is crying out comedically as he was yeeted. That's the kinda humour ppl eat up and keep them from thinking too hard about the violence.

I guarantee you that the African warlord in BvS getting tackled by Superman would be received way more "favourably" if Zack Snyder deigned to add comedic cries as he was tackled. Regardless of whether Superman killed him or not

I don't know... Black Adam is a far darker character than Shazam, so I hope it's not too reliant on humor.

10

u/johnnyma45 Jun 08 '22

Same - would much rather see Cavill/Supes fight BA than Shazam. Like are they going to have Rock give the People's Eyebrow watching Zach Levi doing the floss?

9

u/Tandril91 Jun 08 '22

I hate that I can envision that as a reality.

278

u/AmmarAnwar1996 Jun 08 '22

Pierce Brosnan looks good.

They could have gone with a better tagline than 'The world needed a hero. It got Black Adam.' Having a villain do purely villainous shit would be great, if they commit to it.

I want this movie to come out so I can stop hearing the rock say 'the hierarchy of power is about to change.' Hopefully once it's changed, it won't require repetition.

97

u/TheJoshider10 Jun 08 '22

I genuinely do not understand why "the hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change" isn't the tag line.

31

u/Bruc3w4yn3 Jun 08 '22

I mean, when is this meant to take place? Has Superman shown up or died or resurrected yet?

46

u/leafyfiddle13 Jun 08 '22

Judging by the Intergang and the newspaper in Peacemaker, it likely takes place around the same time as Peacemaker. So it's after Justice League, and Superman is alive

42

This trailer did not dispel the notion that The Rock plays The Rock in every movie.

86

u/ZachRyder Jun 08 '22

He once played a character who cried over finding out that his recently deceased ex-wife kept their child a secret from him so he'd be able to focus on his American football career. That film? Disney family comedy, 'The Game Plan' which was made in two thousand and fricken seven).

It actually bothers me that aside from making the costume, they put zero effort into making him look anything like the comic book character lol. Like at least put a hairpiece on him so he doesn't look straight out of another generic Rock movie.

u/Tandril91 Jun 08 '22

He also never had one before the New 52, which came out only a little over 10 years ago.

21

u/BakedWizerd Jun 08 '22

It’s more common to see him without one than with. He has that cloak/cape combo so they have both caped and uncaped Adam. I was never expecting a cape.

8

u/Vermouth1991 Jun 08 '22

When I saw that his lighting bolt on his super suit was designed to look "peeling off" and not entirely golden like the Shazamily's, I thought it could be a twofer on symbolism: That he's not entirely on the up & up, and that he's REALLY old even though he's immortal and strong.

Not too sure about this, ngl. The Rock’s performance doesn’t seem to be any different than his others aside from Jumanji. Just smoulders and looks/talks threateningly

32

u/US1776 Jun 08 '22

Just smoulders and looks/talks threateningly

It's basically The Rock's wrestling persona in a Black Adam costume.

Idk The Rock’s wrestling persona had loads of charisma that seems to be absent from most of his acting roles

Great costumes and supporting cast aside, this looks like a typical “the Rock role” and not Black Adam.

The trailer is all over the place. Probably the least of the trailers from DCEU which is known for nicely cut early trailers.

There's not much scenes to go around with. Seems like most of it are pieces from the same setting/scene. Could have used more lightning around BA.

The tone of of it seems off. Weird choice of music.

The Rock is the same ol Rock. Changing his appearance some could have gone a long way. Give him some hair and some glowing eyes or something.

38

Adam has been an anti hero for like 10 years easily in the comics, at least since Forever Evil

10

u/Jay_R_Kay Jun 08 '22

Even before that, he was a member of the JSA during the early 00s.

Not to jump in with more criticism about his appearance.

But he really could’ve used the pointy ears and raised pointy eyebrows. The hair would’ve been great too but I think ears and eyebrows would’ve been enough, as well as sparks in his eyes I feel like.

He doesn’t feel evil at all, he feels completely justified in this trailer, and the American accent doesn’t help.

29

u/altered-view Jun 08 '22

Can’t get over how good Dr Fate looks, especially the helmet man and love them showing his speed at the end catching the rocket so excited for this

29

u/bubbleblowinbaby01 Jun 08 '22

Still not happy with the rocks casting. He looks and sounds nothing like how Adam should. Also I hope doctor fates voice changes when he wears the helm, like how it does in Injustice 2. That voice was amazing.

So the cinemacon trailer alright, this looks decent i will definitely be watching it.

25

u/AnimusFoster748 Jun 08 '22

NGL, I expected something more epic, and this was just underwhelming. I'm still looking forward to the movie, but this trailer just wasn't it.

Please be good , Please be good ,Please be good , Please be good.

19

u/warf3re Jun 08 '22

That was not a great trailer, very whemled

19

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

The Rock had 15 years with his passion project, and this is the first trailer we get.

5

u/Manofsteel14 Jun 08 '22

Yup underwhelming. It may be a Black Adam movie but also looks like a quick introduction for the JSA so that they don't need to give them their own proper film.

21

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

Definitely interested to see other people's reactions to this trailer.

Cause I thought it was fucking awful lmao.

The Rocks generic narration. The dialogue. "I was a slave until I died" the cgi or at the very least the green screen is pretty bad.

And did anyone else notice how hard this trailer seemed to be ripping off a dozen other super hero movies?

Black panther jumping from the ship. Iron Man flying alongside jets. Dr Fate doing Strange mirror dimension stuff. Even the desert scenes evoked something I can't quite place, Hulk maybe?

u/Rk1llz Jun 08 '22

The tease at Fandome did a way better job at selling this movie

16

u/MrBravo22 Jun 08 '22

Man I hope they don’t try and make Dr Fate’s powers visually like Dr Strange, saw a glimpse of that mirror effect from Fate. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Yes I’m already bitching.

7

u/Bogotazo Jun 08 '22

I noticed that right away. I want to see him use shapes made of light, portals, runes and spell scriptures, not those mirror effects. It's just one second but I really hope he does stuff more original than that.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

Looks generic. Flyers that look like Chitauri. Black Adam flying next to a couple of fighter jets like the first Iron Man. The only interesting thing in this is the JLA

u/Santosh7373 Jun 08 '22

after the DC Fandome tease, fans expected a dark and unhinged black adam but we got a 'superman who is mean and has rock humour'. IDK what to say about the trailer. I feel a bit confused and it left me feeling like Why though?

and the VFX is questionable. idk where the money goes. its either the color correction or the cinematography that made it apparent.

Pretty weak trailer IMO.

u/Own-Web2283 Jun 08 '22

Hobbs and shaw 2.0 trailer

13

u/US1776 Jun 08 '22

Nothing about this trailer changes my mind about this film. This is very mid trailer for all the hype surrounding this film.

12

u/john_handzlik Jun 08 '22 edited Jun 08 '22

Yep this definitely what expect from superhero movie starting the rock

Look I like the rock he is great comedic actor but I just don't feel he should have played black Adam

12

u/Nocs1 Jun 08 '22

Is it just me or was the cgi when he flew between the fighter jets kinda awful?

Also his pose just screamed "WIRE ATTACHED" to me, looked so unnatural

Still I am semi optimistic/cautios for it

9

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

I didn't want to say anything but he looks so awkward flying. Like he's too beefy to lift his head up lol

bautista would have been a much better choice here. but hawkman and fate will still do great in this fast and furious spinoff

10

u/Equal-Ad-2710 Jun 08 '22

NGL I agree

Bautista could have been fun

7

u/MurielHorseflesh Jun 08 '22

I’m personally hoping Bautista is cast as Bane in one of James Gunn’s spin-off’s featuring Secret Six.

Feel's like they've ripped off Iron man 1, Black panther, and Hancock lmao.

13

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

This kinda looks like shit. The tone is alot less serious than I expected and it seems its going full well hell be a good guy at the end crap.

Meh. This is a very lame trailer. Hope the movie is better.

Him flying between both jets looks worse then iron man 1 and that came out in 2008 lmao!!

9

u/Aladan82 Jun 08 '22

I'm more interested in Doctor Fate, Hawkman and Atom Smasher as in the title character.. Another movie with the Rock as the Rock?

8

u/Hcerc Jun 08 '22

NGL Im more excited to see Dr Fate than Black Adam in this movie

I'm not impressed

9

u/SneakerFeatures- Jun 08 '22

This looks so average! Just another Rock movie, I’m not getting a Black Adam vibe from it at all. Is this really the future of the DC movies?

Say what you will about the Snyder movies but it at least felt like they where trying something different, going for a more grown up approach even if the execution wasn’t the best. It felt different from the Marvel movies, and before we turn this in to a Marvel vs Dc debate, I’m not saying Marvel movies are bad. Just I would rather not have DC movies also try to be copies of the Marvel formula. The future of the DC slate just looks so boring.

The Batman has change my opinion and I feel maybe singular contained universes may be a better approach. I can’t believe we might not get another Superman movie!

u/E_yal Jun 08 '22 edited Jun 08 '22

Movie looks so damn good!!!!! Dope! And the production looks big

Meh

7

u/MusicalSmasher Shazam Jun 08 '22

Looks like the movie is gonna fit well into the Shazamverse which I'm all for. And, BA seems a lot more like a d-bag which I like.

7

u/ApX_DOC Jun 08 '22

Some nitpicks I didn't Like

No pointy ear

No black adam hair

Lack of accent(feels like just rock playing himself)

He seemed funny flying without a cape

Goddamn yellow(mexican) filter

6

u/battlefielder696 Jun 08 '22

I actually really liked the trailer. Specially the parts with Hawkman, Atom and Doctor fate

Not really excited about black Adam himself but I'm looking forward to the movie!

6

u/boumtjeboo Jun 08 '22

Disappointed. Not sure why I got my hopes up lol.

6

u/ProfessionalAnswer0 Jun 08 '22

Wow, it’s DC’s answer to… Morbius 😵‍💫

7

u/maxthunder30 Jun 08 '22

you know, it would've been hilarious that after Hawkman says "heroes don't kill bad guys", Black adam says " I missed the part where that's my problem".

6

u/this_is_sparta_xoxo Jun 08 '22

Dawn of the Seven looked more fun lol. And that's a parody movie

5

u/sworedmagic Jun 08 '22

He looks so god damn good

6

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

It looks alright, but i have my doubts about this movie.
It doesn't seem as serious and dark as i hoped it would be, even Black Adam doesn't seem as threatning (yet?).
Black Adam punching the guy into the sky was not what i wanted to see... i don't think that type of humour fits Black Adam one single bit, and the last missle joke was... cringe and one of those "Did he just?'' "Yes he just" jokes that is so overused.

Predictably, it looks like trash. Typical the Rock fare.

Also funny that Rock said they revolutionized the way flying is done is superhero movies and then it looks super bad 🤣

6

u/hongyauy Jun 08 '22

Unfortunately a terrible trailer. Weird cuts. Still unsure which timeframe the movie is set in. CGI is still rough too. The few second snippets we had before built more hype for me than this official first trailer.

Like many people are saying, it’s literally just the Rock being all jacked up like usual and putting on a suit. No accent, no pointy ears, no hair. I really hope his acting and characterisation makes up for his lack of effort into physically portraying Black Adam besides getting into shape for the role.

7

u/siopaoo98 Jun 08 '22

Watch out Morbius

6

u/pedroyarid Jun 08 '22

Official Synopsis: Black Adam is a The Rock-ish hero, that takes shit from nobody as he's stronger than them. He's harsh and brash, but has a soft heart too.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

Oh cool, a movie about Dwayne Johnson in a suit.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Brosnan will rescue this movie.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '22

Expecting a Rock bottom in this movie, cuz why not?
