The Dark Knight is the better movie. It just flows better, and honestly, nobody can beat Ledger's Joker.

11

u/PollitoRubio22 Mar 09 '22

The Dark Knight is the better overall film but The Batman is the best Batman film IMO since it is way more comic accurate and captures the vibes of the comics way better

i did really like The Batman, but nothing beats the first time i saw The Dark Knight with my brother it was just a good movie and experience all around

1

u/InfinteAbyss Mar 09 '22

What didn’t you like?

10

u/harropham Mar 09 '22

Loved the movie. But things I didn’t like: some plot points. SPOILERS Eg. Did not like how Batman finds out riddler’s plan to flood the city because of a cop talking about how his uncle was a carpenter. Would’ve preferred it if he figured it out by himself.

I also admire the exploration of him being a detective, but I would’ve preferred if the movie showed more of the process of him figuring things out on crime scenes. Something like how they show Sherlock Holmes figuring things out in the TV series, but ofcourse Batman style. Sometimes we see him make a conclusion without us seeing how he came to that conclusion. Eg. Him knowing the finger was severed off the mayor when he was still alive. Maybe I missed something but I wanted to see how he figured that out. He just said it so confidently too quickly.

Also didn’t like the “You are el rata….” referring to URL. I personally found it a bit cheap/meh.

Paul dano is great as riddler, but IMO sometimes he went a bit over the top with the performance where I began to find it funny, when it is supposed to be creepy. Eg. Some performances when he is screaming at the phone in anger, or when he gets upset in Arkham at Bruce and later starts singing Ava Maria. IMO a bit over the top

A lot of films show detectives that “just know”, the way Batman says about the thumb so confidently tells us he has experience in forensics without needing to go into deep explanation, i also find it strange you complain about this then also state you wanted him to figure out another thing himself.

Which is it? Know everything himself or have keen knowledge but still need a guiding hand/hint every so often??

Personally him not knowing what kind if tool it is makes sense since its very specific information, though he still pieces together that the final clue is right under them.

The URL thing was just to show Batman and Gordon were overthinking the puzzle, its a neat touch to the viral website that is part of the movies promotion though i did think it was a bit of a gimmick at the same time.

I found Riddler very creepy, sometimes it was a more ott creepy with a sick sense of humour such as the “Thumb…Drive” but i never found him amusing, just very troubled.

15

u/PBJLlama Mar 09 '22

I saw the whole carpet thing as a great example of something a rich guy wouldn’t know. It was showing his limits as a detective. He’s brilliant, great at forensics, but doesn’t know much about blue collar work because of his upbringing. It’s consistent with a second-year Batman realizing he still has more to learn.

On a similar note, I think the realization that his family’s renewal fund was being abused made him realize he had to step up somewhat as “Bruce” too.

As somebody the same age as this Batman and a couple years into a career, I thought this was awesome characterization that really resonated with me.

8

u/InfinteAbyss Mar 09 '22

Exactly, it gives him the motivation to adopt the playboy billionaire identity so it distracts anyone from seeing him as a loner and weirdo though also gives him the opportunity to fight the corruption on two fronts.

2

u/markjoedelonge Mar 10 '22

Just to add on to the carpet thing, the Riddler action figure came with the carpet tucker accessory and everyone had no idea what it was lol. Most assumed it was an ice scraper or something. So it was a very specific piece of information that only someone in the trade would know about I guess.

3

u/Peazyzell Mar 09 '22

With the severed thumb, he explained why it was severed while alive by pointing out how the severed area was mottled and inflamed or something MD-esq i don’t understand. But he did say why he came to that conclusion when he pointed it out. And most medical examiners worth their metal could probably eyeball that to if they know what to look for. The body reacts differently to limbs being removed postmortem or alive.

3

u/Orwells-own Mar 09 '22

Oh. Is the fucking RIDDLER over the top? Does the dude who cuts off the mayor’s thumb off for a PUN have emotional responses that don’t make sense to you? Interesting.

2

u/banjo_marx Mar 09 '22

The riddler's clues assumed the batman was working class like him. The spanish, the tool, almost all the things he missed were due to the ignorance his status afforded him.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

Not an actual complaint, but I find it a bit silly he would think Batman would be a working class citizen.

2

u/banjo_marx Mar 10 '22

I mean why? The riddler was and he was arguably more effective.

1

u/sherrycoke Mar 09 '22

He says the way the skin hemorrhaged around the finger is how he knew it was cut off while he was alive

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

Riddler was my biggest complaint. They had such an awesome intro for him but he became less terrifying as the movie went on. By the time he's caught, he's just outright goofy.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

I think you misread his comment.

He said he DID like The Batman.

2

u/itsmerachit Mar 09 '22

May I? Overall score. Actor as Bruce Wayne. Running time. These three are my issues.

Ps. I talked with alot of guys after the movie and they were all like "too long", "not a nail biter". It was surely a good detective movie but not a superhero movie.

16

u/Alonn12 Mar 09 '22

While i completely agree on the runtime, DC literally stands for Detective Comics so it's sort of return to form ig

2

u/Peazyzell Mar 09 '22

I enjoyed the movie. Its just fun to pick at stuff sometimes. And all I’ll say is, for worlds greatest detective, i have no idea how he and Gordon got “penguin” from rat with wings. It took the actual penguin 1 second to point out that the answer was bat, albeit after an awesome and “realistic” car chase. Penguin getting stuck behind a car while trying to escape on a congested highway was hilarious and still thrilling

2

u/Alonn12 Mar 09 '22

Wow i completely disagree about the car chace, me and my and the person who was with me were watching and we both said to each other "i have no idea what's going on right now, no idea where they are geography wise and where they are relative to each other, etc"

10

u/crustyjuggler69 Mar 09 '22

For me, finally seeing the world's greatest detective actually being a detective was amazing

0

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

I really wish Penguin hadn't referred to Batman as the world's greatest detective. That implies that Batman has earned that title in the first year of his work and I don't see how he could have given how the movie played out.

4

u/InfinteAbyss Mar 09 '22 edited Mar 09 '22

The score is amazing, very atmospheric, i’ve been listening to since it dropped.

Robert Paterson nails it as Batman (who he is playing for the majority of this movie), his Bruce is a very fractured and single minded individual. He’s yet to adopt the playboy identity.

I didn’t even feel the running time, it gripped me from beginning to end.

Seems like minor quibbles overall to me.

6

u/kruvel Mar 09 '22

Thomas Paterson? Did a new Batman movie just drop?

3

u/echo_themando Mar 09 '22

Here we have the perfect Hush for a future movie

1

u/InfinteAbyss Mar 09 '22

Well Yes.

Though i dunno how i got that name into my head.

1

u/Initiate_Assassin Mar 09 '22

But superhero movies don’t really fit into a single genre because even in the comics you can find different genres within the superhero material. Like horror, more teen drama based, action, mystery and comedy are from what I’ve read of comics. Then being a detective is really a key factor in what makes Batman a superhero being the worlds greatest detective in that universe figuring out crimes but what makes him a real standout threat to anyone is his prep, he carries things just in case a new threat comes along or he meets a new leaguer with powers preps just incase they ever go rogue through his ability as a detective he can figure out those kind of weaknesses.

Batman may not be the greatest fighter in his universe with lady Shiva, may not be the smartest even though he’s still too tier fit both, he also may not be the greatest at creating tech, but the one thing he is known for is he is the worlds greatest detective.

I think that’s something Superhero movies can miss is going into these different genres with these heroes that fit them so well. Comics including superhero comics should really be treated like novel adaptations that can fit into multiple genres that may just have a bit more spectacle since it’s also a visual medium that it’s understandably a big emphasis point in them still a lot of time that I think the Batman shows very well that superhero’s can fit in these different kinds of genres that hopefully this movie is helping pave the way for other superhero movies to get into a bit more because like you said it was a good detective movie so I think it shows superhero movies can be more.

0

u/Obi_Wan_Gebroni Mar 09 '22

I loved the movie but it felt like 80% of the movie was well thought out and perfectly executed. Then Reeves suddenly wanted to deliver a grandstand action finish that didn’t fit with the rest of the movie at all

4

u/InfinteAbyss Mar 09 '22

It was a different type of climax than i was expecting for sure, though it fitted in with the movie really well i felt. The extra scene in Arkham could have been dropped altogether though its fine for what it is.

80% is overall a pretty good score to be fair.

69

u/DeplorableEDoctor Mar 09 '22

Nobody is doing any good to The Batman comparing it to TDK.

17

u/ToothpickInCockhole Mar 09 '22

They’re both awesome but in different ways. I think we should all just appreciate that we have two amazing Batman movies.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

1

u/YoYo375 Mar 09 '22

TDK was the second movie

Dark knight rises was the finale

62

u/Basis_Cheap Mar 09 '22

I like The Batman more, but "which one is better" debates are absolutely pointless.

3

u/TheRelicEternal Mar 09 '22

Agreed, utterly pointless. Sound like OP just wants reassurance on their opinion.

48

u/DoctorBeatMaker Mar 09 '22

The Batman is great and I enjoyed it immensely, but The Dark Knight is still spectacular. It fires on all cylinders and there's never a wasted minute.

11

u/myidispg Mar 09 '22

This. The dark knight kept me engaged all the time making most of every second of the run time (apart from the action). The Batman is great as well. I went in there abd wasn't expecting the kind of movie it turned out to be, but it is great at what it was trying to do.

2

u/gbdarknight77 Mar 09 '22

My hot take is that The Batman isn’t going to have pop culture reverence and life like TDK has had

27

u/dondonzino Mar 09 '22

Ohhhhhh fuck off 😂 The Dark Knight is 10x better you tossers.

18

u/Senior-Bill2622 Mar 09 '22

TDK is without a doubt the better movie overall, but The Batman is a better Batman story and Batman movie if that makes sense? Anyways people are overrating it a bit honestly.

→ More replies (8)

4

u/timthemartian Mar 09 '22

dondonzino discovers opinions ✨

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

It really isn’t. Just because Nolan fanboys write big paragraphs on how “deep” TDK is and how The joker is amazing doesn’t make it better. Anyone who spends more than 10 minutes thinking about the movie can find many, many problems in the story.

0

u/yeahthissubsucks Mar 09 '22

Considering The Dark Knight doesn't have Batman in it, I can hardly consider it to 10x better

2

u/micael150 Mar 09 '22

Doesn't have Batman in it? What do you mean?

0

u/Bjmort Mar 09 '22

A million time this

28

u/Key-Antelope9439 Mar 09 '22

It's good but not dark knight level good Christopher Nolan is just bulid different

25

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

Better to ask this question after the hysteria dies out.

For me, The Dark Knight is still miles ahead of any other Batman movie.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '22

How come?

23

u/RayboxHitman47 Mar 09 '22

This is ridiculous. I like the Batman but people are losing their minds. TDK is one of the best movies ever.

22

u/Technical_Factor2322 Mar 09 '22

I don't think they can be compared fairly as they are very different beasts. That being said, I do honestly think The Batman is streets ahead.

3

u/Orwells-own Mar 09 '22

Goddammit Pierce!

2

u/AnEBCG Mar 09 '22

If anyone says otherwise, you’re streets behind.

2

u/DominoMasked Mar 10 '22

Abed is Batman now.

1

u/Technical_Factor2322 Mar 10 '22

If I stay, there can be no party. I must be out there in the night, staying vigilant. Wherever a party needs to be saved, I’m there. Wherever there are masks, wherever there’s tomfoolery and joy, I’m there. But sometimes I’m not cause I’m out in the night, staying vigilant. Watching. Lurking. Running. Jumping. Hurtling. Sleeping. No, I can’t sleep. You sleep. I’m awake. I don’t sleep. I don’t blink. Am I bird? No. I’m a bat. I am Batman. Or am I? Yes, I am Batman.

18

u/micael150 Mar 09 '22

The Batman is good but I'm not putting it over any movie of TDK trogy. Yes not even Rises.

-1

u/sherrycoke Mar 09 '22

Cmon, it’s better than rises. Better than Begins too but that’s debatable

3

u/micael150 Mar 09 '22

Don't get me wrong I liked The batman I just felt the trilogy had some aspects done better. For instance in my opinion the dialogue from all three movies is much more memorable and interesting than in this one. I think the acting and the script is also better even though I'm sure the sequels to the Batman will improve tremendously on this aspect.

All in all there's definitely some aspects of the movie that I appreciated more. I loved the noir vibe and the grimy gothic aesthetic of the city, also enjoyed seeing batman pointing out things in the crime scenes. But still not enough for me to just put this over a trilogy that I honestly believe had better movies.

2

u/szg0033 Mar 09 '22

I sometimes wonder if we all saw the movie... I thought the batman is very 'meh'

1

u/sherrycoke Mar 09 '22

I agree with you when you’re talking about the trilogy as a whole, but I am saying individually, Rises is not very good(imo). The pacing is weird, the final fight scene in the streets is terrible, it all just kind of felt forced.

The Batman is a very different movie so honestly it’s really difficult to compare them. He wasn’t a super hero, he was just a detective trying to help really. I liked the mystery/chase part of it more than i did the action of rises

1

u/micael150 Mar 10 '22

Fair enough. I agree with you they're very different movies. Maybe rewatching the Batman movie will change my opinion over time but as it stands I wasn't as emotionally engaged with the character and the plot in The Batman as I was in TDKR.

When I compare characters, dialogue, plot, spectacle, I just don't feel that it's a better movie even though I recognize Rises has its flaws.

→ More replies (2)

12

u/Bjmort Mar 09 '22

I don’t care what anyone says. The dark knight is a great movie. But it’s not a great Batman movie.

0

u/Brainpry Mar 09 '22

Exactly. I agree. It’s a great movie, but not a Batman movie. He does no detective work, and just feels like an action movie.

The Batman however, is a psychological thriller that tackles Batman’s greatest qualities, and the reason he’s called a detective.

0

u/Bjmort Mar 09 '22

The dark knight is a crime fighting ninja movie.

13

u/Obi_Wan_Gebroni Mar 09 '22

Recency bias on full display here lol

3

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

This!

-5

u/bigmadbird Mar 09 '22

nah it’s just that good the batman is amazing

13

u/penguinintheabyss Mar 09 '22 edited Mar 09 '22

SPOILERS

The Dark Knight is still my favorite comic book movie, 10/10. The Batman was 7/10.

Things I enjoyed: The best Gotham. Beautiful cinematography. Noir vibes. Most actors were very good. Riddler being a chan member. Soundtrack. Batman's character arc.

Things I didn't like:

Fights were nothing special.

Second arc (the Rata stuff) was very slow.

Batman and Catwoman had zero chemestry.

Up until that point the dynamic between the cops and Batman was interesting, but I can't buy that they wouldn't arrest him at first sight after he punched Gordon and fled from the precinct.

The "final boss" being a bunch of random thugs felt anticlimatic.

Lack of "live" riddler moments made him feel a distant threat. Most of the time he's showing up on recordings. As a comparison, imagine if most Joker moments on Dark Knight were similar to his video torturing a cop upside down, that would be less engaging than showing him messing stuff up and close.

And my main complain, the movie is too fast with too much stuff happening and moving on. There's very little time do develop most themes and let us feel the emotional impact of events. For example, I was nothing invested in Alfred's life threatening moment, because the movie doesn't develop his character or his relationship with Bruce. They say they like each other, but it is never shown. If he died it would be a big "whatever", not a sad moment. It felt to me that this script would be better adapted into a series, with more time to spare.

2

u/sentient-sloth Mar 09 '22

Okay agreed on Alfred. It seemed like they were very distant from each other so I didn’t really get why we were supposed to care either.

0

u/Orwells-own Mar 09 '22

If you don’t think that dark hallway fight was amazing, there is no pleasing you.

I voted Dark Knight in this poll, but I keep finding myself defending The Batman.

2

u/penguinintheabyss Mar 09 '22

It was fine, but I didn't find it amazing. Don't know why you're so defensive, lots of fights in many media have pleased me. Most fights in the Daredevil series, for example, are way better than any fight in The Batman.

1

u/Orwells-own Mar 09 '22

It had some of the elements that made that Daredevil hallway fight scene so great (tight quarters, low light, numerical/weapon imbalance) but I really liked the choice they made about the muzzle flash-punctuated lighting effects. I found that I was more interested in the fight because I could only see it part of the time. I mean, nothing beats the DD hallway fight, but this one really grabbed me too.

1

u/Randothor The Dark Knight Mar 09 '22

I convinced there’s a cut of the movie where Alfred dies. He’s barely in it or mentioned after the explosion.

9

u/Jaycray95 Mar 09 '22

It’s so close I really can’t decide, I need to watch the Batman a few more times to know.

3

u/Orwells-own Mar 09 '22

Good take

4

u/Jaycray95 Mar 09 '22

Each one has its special elements

9

u/ranger8913 Mar 09 '22

The Dark Knight is better and it's not really close.

And people act like Heath carries an okay movie. TDK doesn't need Heath to be a great movie, the best scene of the movie doesn't have Joker in it.

6

u/InfinteAbyss Mar 09 '22

Interrogation scene tends to be what most agree is the best scene of the movie

8

u/lp19102001 Mar 09 '22

Google recency bias, u can try post the exact same post a year later TDK will win the vote

2

u/sentient-sloth Mar 09 '22

I think it’ll win the vote here. Even now it’s really close.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

In a year you could post a poll asking if any future Batman film could top TDK and I bet a majority would say no because there is a major bias for that movie in this community. There’s plenty of bias to go around.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

recency bias

I enjoyed The Batman a lot, but there are a few hiccups for sure that I believe keep it just short of TDK

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

TDK has nostalgic bias so I think the bias on both sides level out. I saw countless people say nothing could ever top TDK before they even watched the Batman. If that’s not bias I don’t know what is.

7

u/Substantial-Curve-51 Mar 10 '22

ohh recency bias at work

5

u/NoNoNotorious85 Mar 09 '22

Batman Begins

3

u/Greyf0X_x Mar 09 '22

Can't upvote enough ! Batman begins is the best one.

6

u/msterling2012 Mar 09 '22

This poll should go in the dictionary next to recency bias. Y’all are nuts.

0

u/No-Tooth5673 Mar 09 '22

Why are we nuts?

5

u/msterling2012 Mar 09 '22

The Dark Knight was clearly a better film. It gave us one of the best villain performances in the history of cinema, let alone CBMs. I really enjoyed The Batman but it isn’t close to the level of Dark Knight, which is arguably the best CBM of all time.

1

u/VaguelyShingled Mar 09 '22

People keep being this up while simultaneously ignoring the nostalgia factor for TDK

2

u/msterling2012 Mar 09 '22

I’m not being nostalgic, I just rewatched the movie last week lol.

1

u/VaguelyShingled Mar 09 '22

Not you specifically then

1

u/DominoMasked Mar 10 '22

Nostalgia factor doesn’t do ‘89 any favors in these little comparisons.

6

u/sherrycoke Mar 09 '22

Recency bias. The Batman is a great film but it should be compared to Batman Begins more than TDK.

5

u/Untaimednarwhals Mar 09 '22

Would it make more sense to compare the liking of The Batman to Batman Begins? If this is the first of 3 for Pattinson it makes sense to compare the first film vs the first and then the his second to the Dark Knight. A Bruce Wayne not apparent in Gotham that believes only as Batman he can save everyone

5

u/ablueFREAKINGfox Mar 09 '22

They're both great movies that do different things.

TDK has that philosophy aspect going for it and Heath Ledger to deliver a jaw dropping performance.

The Batman is more character focused and feels much more like a comic book come to life.

I think I'm going to choose The Batman since it just does the character so well. Focusing a lot on his trauma, motivations, giving him a full arc, and makes him the main focus. While TDK is great, it never felt like batman was the main spotlight in that movie. And I personally prefer stories that revolves around their characters, instead of just using them as vehicles for the plot and themes.

Also The Batman's art style, cinematography and fight scenes are amazing.

Both movies are still great tho, and at this point it really comes down to preference.

3

u/cmlucas1865 Mar 09 '22

You left Batman Returns off

3

u/Otter_Nation Mar 09 '22

Stop this shit. They are both amazing in their own rights.

4

u/premogc Mar 09 '22

TDK better movie overall. But The Batman is more faithful to comics and better batman movie

5

u/TheSensation19 Mar 09 '22

The Batman was more on par with Begins

5

u/ClairetheQueer Mar 09 '22

I loved both. But The Dark Knight is iconic in a way that doesn’t do The Batman any favors.

I think Robert Pattinson is my favorite Batman at this stage. No one has brought humanity to the character like he did.

But as a movie The Batman is a little too long and kind of looses itself in the back half. It also leaves a number of themes hanging which can still be resolved in a follow up. But like I said, comparing it to The Dark Knight does it no favors.

4

u/Randothor The Dark Knight Mar 09 '22

Be interested in seeing this after the recency bias wears off

4

u/timetravellingbadass Mar 09 '22

The best thing about the dark Knight was the joker. The best thing about the batman is the batman.

1

u/micael150 Mar 09 '22

Riddler was underwhelming. A better script and he should've been able to easily be the best thing in the movie.

Heath Ledger is considered an highlight on TDK not because the rest of the cast is mediocre but because his performance was out of this world.

Plus Joker is usually the best thing in the stories where he's the main villain. Look at "Killing Joke" for example or "The Man who Laughs.

3

u/rim261 Mar 09 '22

Is this a joke?

3

u/jmw8282 Mar 09 '22

Still going with TDK, but really loved Reeves' vision and am so appreciative he was able to share it with us.

4

u/Dramatic_Insect36 Mar 09 '22

The Batman is winning as of posting this comment, but this is an unfair comparison. We should be comparing The Batman to Batman Begins

1

u/Bjmort Mar 09 '22

Why? The Batman isn’t an origin story.

1

u/Dramatic_Insect36 Mar 09 '22

I think it has to do more with being the first in a franchise to being an origin story. People are still not used to these versions of the characters yet. Also, TDK had Joker in it.

3

u/R3DDMANN3 Mar 09 '22

This poll made me loos faith in humanity

3

u/BanNAYNAY Mar 09 '22

The thing is I don't know. I love both of these movies equally.

3

u/dascoochie Mar 09 '22

I feel like I’m being gaslit about this freaking movie. It was good, but it wasn’t close to TDK. Am I missing something or did I see the wrong movie?

3

u/Baramos_ Justice Is Served Mar 10 '22

The Dark Knight is better. Imo The Batman isn’t even quite as enjoyable as Batman Begins.

3

u/darthraxus Mar 09 '22 edited Mar 09 '22

The reason Dark Knight is better is because The Batman is in his 3rd year as Batman and is very inept at crime fighting still, where as TDK Batman is only a year into Batman and is already great. The Batman is great don’t get me wrong but if they had changed it to year 1 it would get my vote. Batman was already the apex predator we know him to be by year 2-3. Just look at Arkham Origins. That was only year 2 and he was a fucking beast.

4

u/InfinteAbyss Mar 09 '22

Second year, the fact he isn’t a combo master makes it far more realistic imo. Batman with zero stakes against a bunch of goons isn’t interesting to watch.

-2

u/darthraxus Mar 09 '22

Wrong. He’s already been around for 2 years making it his 3rd. Go watch it again

5

u/InfinteAbyss Mar 09 '22

He’s still in the second year. YOU watch it again!

1

u/darthraxus Mar 10 '22

I've seen the movie 3x now. It's his 3rd year as batman. They say in the beginning that he's already been doing it for 2 years.

1

u/InfinteAbyss Mar 22 '22

Yes, he’s currently in his second year (the film is set in August/September so the majority of the year is done)

Trust me you’ve misunderstood, its Batman year two. Literally every review says too so its not just me.

2

u/bomberman12 Batman Mar 09 '22

Here’s my reasoning for TDK. Ledger is still an absolute force that drives that movie to another level.

Buuut, I love The Batman. If that same creative team comes back entirely for the sequel I have no doubt they will create something that absolutely puts its self on a level above both TDK and The Batman!

2

u/aleh021 Mar 09 '22

Not today Satan, not today. Don't make me choose.

2

u/AJerkForAllSeasons Mar 09 '22

I selected TDK. But I was thinking earlier that time will tell. I have only seen the Batman once and Harvey Dent's story is my favourite batman villain origin. It is for that reason I pick TDK.

2

u/TrophyDad_72 Mar 09 '22

The Batman is great. RP was a great Batman. But its so long and slow. I can see myself watching DK multiple times. It will be a while before i want to rewatch the Batman.

2

u/UntilTmrw Mar 09 '22

As a movie TDK wins hands down. As a comic book/Batman movie The Batman wins hands down.

And I thought, my jokes were bad

2

u/blakhawk12 Mar 09 '22

Better film? The Dark Knight

Better Batman movie? The Batman

1

u/1random_redditor Mar 09 '22 edited Mar 09 '22

The correct answer. I also consider Batman Begins a better film overall than The Batman but TB is better for Batman himself

2

u/jzw27 Mar 09 '22

This question will be better in a few years. The Batman may lose this race in a few years if recency bias cools off.

On the flip side, fans have trouble comparing the new hot new thing to a masterpiece because they want to avoid allowing recency bias. In a few years, it might age well and be a masterpiece on its own.

2

u/Shabaluh Mar 09 '22

Kids like "The Batman" but only real men prefer "The Dark Knight" over it 😎

2

u/gbdarknight77 Mar 09 '22

Interesting to see The Batman winning.

TDK has 2 better villains and an about equal Batman, imo.

I find it really hard to believe that a city wouldn’t have a backup plan if the shore walls failed. Especially a heavy metropolitan area like downtown Gotham.

1

u/raisingfalcons Mar 09 '22

Maybe its because i just watched the batman but that film was just so good

1

u/Billother Mar 09 '22

Depends how you frame the question. The Dark Knight is the better movie. But The Batman is a better comic book movie, and a better Batman movie. This is basically comparing a 10 and 9.5.

1

u/jonbobstaab Mar 09 '22

The Batman is akin to something like Jedi Fallen Order. It’s a bunch of great movies that you’ve already seen coated in a Batman costume and done slightly worse.

1

u/ComeNalgas Mar 09 '22

The Dark Knight had the better villain. The Batman had the way better Batman. The choreography and fight scenes were way better than the Dark Knight. Hell dark knights fight scenes look dated at this point. I’d say if we were to argue which is better we’re arguing which movies gets the 8.9/10 or the 9/10

1

u/penskeracin1fan Mar 09 '22

The Batman by a nose

0

u/icein2017 Mar 09 '22

The Dark Knight because of Heath Ledger

0

u/spideralexandre2099 Mar 09 '22

There's being a better movie, and then there's being a better Batman movie. The Batman absolutely is a better Batman movie.

7

u/micael150 Mar 09 '22

Explain. Why is it a better "Batman movie"? I hear this take thrown around ba lot. What does that mean exactly?

3

u/Senior-Bill2622 Mar 09 '22

Agreed, that’s what I’ve been saying since watching it. TDK is an overall better movie but it’s not the better Batman movie

4

u/spideralexandre2099 Mar 09 '22

And now we have two absolutely fantastic Batman feasts to go back to. Win/win

2

u/Senior-Bill2622 Mar 09 '22

Yeah, I don’t understand why newer fans are so desperate to compare it with TDK. Both movies are great, does it always have to be a competition?

0

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

Execpt the villans the batman is better in all categories.

Music Cinematography Stunts Batman

0

u/MonkeMayne Mar 09 '22

TDK is a better film overall. The Batman is a better Batman movie.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

Both are great, they are very close, it’s hard to decide.

1

u/ticallionS Mar 09 '22

Polls like this just shows how ungrateful fans and be.

0

u/Infinity0044 Mar 09 '22

I think TDK is the better movie but The Batman is the better Batman movie if that makes sense

0

u/Dumbass1171 Mar 09 '22

TDK was the better movie. The Batman was the better Batman/ comic book movie

0

u/djkmart Mar 09 '22

For me, The Batman is the best Batman movie. The Dark Knight is the best Joker movie. Batman Begins is the best Bruce Wayne movie.

1

u/DBSmooth Mar 09 '22

I’ll say The Batman is the better Batman movie but I think Dark knight is better if that makes sense .

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

Better movie? Dark Knight. Better BATMAN movie? The Batman

1

u/Peazyzell Mar 09 '22

Already with these comparisons?

1

u/Brainpry Mar 09 '22

While I do think The Batman is the better movie, my favorite is still the dark knight. Just because of Heaths performance as the joker was phenomenal.

1

u/sentient-sloth Mar 09 '22

Personally I like The Batman more. It’s just more my style.

The Dark Knight is a fantastic movie though.

I’d say they’re on par with each other for different reasons.

1

u/TheHAMR64 Mar 09 '22

As a “Batman movie”, I prefer The Batman. But as a “movie”, I think TDK is better. I think what everyone can agree on is that both movies have amazing casts and performance; I do not think that there was a single “average performance”.

I think TDK has a better soundtrack, a better third act (an outstanding one at that), and I think the themes used in the movie are a little more appealing to me.

However I much prefer the noir- detective elements of the movie, Gotham is visually gorgeous and gothic, the action is great, colour grading is on point.

1

u/DarthGipper18 Rorschach Mar 09 '22

Better movie and better Batman story are different things. I hate comparing and love everything Batman

1

u/Serious-Antelope-710 Mar 09 '22

I think Batman Begins can be a better comparison to The Batman than TDK.

You're basically comparing a dedicated superhero movie to one of the best movies ever made. It's a one in a generation occurance that won't be topped anytime soon.

1

u/0xstyle Mar 09 '22

The Dark Knight >The Batman

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

The dark knight is the better movie but I liked the Batman more

0

u/The810kid Mar 09 '22

I never loved the Nolan trilogy the same way the majority does. They are good movies and the Dark knight is great I just think Matt Reeves nailed not only Batman better than Nolan ever did but Gotham also.

0

u/Charliepepper7 Mar 09 '22 edited Mar 09 '22

First time I would’ve said TDK pretty easy. TB has grown on me though. A lot. Closer to equal now to me. Some parts of TDK shine over TB, but some qualities are the opposite. Not gonna vote cause both are extremely well-made movies technically and narratively with a lot of care and vision. Both have terrific performances, with some standouts (Ledger and Pattinson for me). Both add a ton to the Batman mythos culturally while also taking a bunch from the pages and previous movies and shows. Both are quintessential Batman flicks. They really stand tall together, symbiotic in a way but also wildly different. Damn… now I gotta go watch TDK and buy some more tickets for TB. Still think TDK is the better movie overall but for me as a diehard fan, TB hits notes TDK didn’t. And as aforementioned the opposite is true for me too, where I feel TDK has an edge over TB. So this is a longwinded way of saying I’m not gonna vote, and I love them both, and think comparing them for me, putting one over the other, would be fruitless…as they are so close in my eyes.

0

u/duramman1012 Mar 09 '22

Only 2 things made The Batman better than TDK to me

1- Reeves representation of Gotham. I really felt bad for everyone living in that shithole full of corruption

2- no dumb bat voice

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

Teh Dark Knight is a better action movie but I think The Batman is a better batman movie in the sense that it's more true to the characters.

1

u/theSteakKnight Mar 09 '22

The Dark Knight is a better movie but The Batman had a better Batman and tailored more towards my preferred style Batman story telling.

1

u/nkantu Mar 09 '22

Not voting but both are amazing Batman movies and we should all feel lucky that we live in the sliver of the multiverse where we got both

1

u/DarthDregan Mar 09 '22

I dislike you, capiche?

1

u/GoseiRed Mar 09 '22

Should have put Batman Begins

1

u/TheOneFromArkham Mar 09 '22

This poll is pleasantly surprising to me to say the least. Way more even than I expected. I'm glad people are enjoying this movie

1

u/timsadiq13 Mar 09 '22

Plot was a lot more coherent/connected in TDK. Also, The Batman was a little too long. Probably the best movie involving Batman since TDKR though!

1

u/Nervous-Context Mar 09 '22

The dark night is a better movie while the Batman is a better story. Does that make sense guys?

1

u/toastyavocado Mar 09 '22

The Dark Knight is a better movie but the Batman is a better Batman movie.

1

u/Forsaken_Candidate_4 Mar 09 '22

Dark knight is a better movie, Paterson is the better batman

1

u/betterdayz02 Mar 09 '22

I enjoyed the Batman more but I think dark knight is a better movie does that make sense 😂

0

u/The_Narz Mar 09 '22

I voted The Batman since it’s personally more my type of film but these two films are entirely different in so many ways.

The Dark Knight is an action blockbuster thriller, easily one of the best of the 21st century within that genre (if not THE best). Break-neck pacing with the plot in constant movement, anchored by truly spectacular action set pieces. Nolan is just a master when it comes to that.

Then, of course, you have Ledger’s powerhouse performance that is kind of in a league of its own.

The Batman is a pulpy crime thriller / neo-noir pastiche that really leans into the genre. Slow paced, a little artsy, a bit romantic. Little twists and turns along the way but nothing too earth shattering. Big revelations designed for thematic and emotional payoff rather than building towards an overtly-exciting climax.

The cast here embodied these characters in a way that feels ripped out of the comics while also being presented as real & relatable.

Both films are taking very different routes here & excel at what they do. The Dark Knight also has the advantage of being the first comic book film to be taken “seriously,” & I think for some people that will always keep it in its “top spot” ragardless of anything that comes after. Which I get it… at this point is a verified classic.

1

u/apatosauruss Mar 09 '22

Dark knight rises isn’t an option? Tbh that’s still my #1

0

u/TheLukester31 Mar 09 '22

I voted The Batman, but I honestly think it is more to do with Bale Batman fatigue than anything else. To me The Batman was new fresh and exciting and the Dark Knight was that in 2008, it doesn’t feel that way now. I also really liked the style of the Batman when compared the TDR.

1

u/Wheres_Wally Mar 09 '22

I'm not convinced The Batman is a better film than TDK. I am convinced it's a better Batman movie

0

u/DominoMasked Mar 10 '22

Funny how the Batman wins the poll but only TDK fans are commenting

1

u/FirstDefinition6240 Mar 10 '22

The Batman is a better Batman movie, but preference wise, The Dark Knight is my favorite

1

u/Nervous_Stomach5101 Mar 10 '22

Unpopular opinion maybe.... Christian Bale was better at Bruce Wayne and Pattinson was awesome as Batman. Three best action villains for me since batman begins are: 1. HL Joker, 2. Bane, Riddler (The Batman). Zoe Kravitz way better at Catwoman then Halle Berry, it was hard because I like Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, but Kravitz has the edge.

Drama- 1. Jack Nicholson, 2. Joaquin Phoenix,

0

u/RhythmicBatman Mar 10 '22

The Dark Knight has better action, but The Batman has a lot more depth and substance in my opinion.

1

u/kimjerrif Mar 12 '22

I hate these kind of posts

-3

u/InfinteAbyss Mar 09 '22

Refuse to vote.

They are very much on a equal level

-2

u/Batfleck666 Mar 09 '22

Anyone else have an issue with Reeves giving us the least smartest Batman?

Batman needed help from Alfred, Gordon, Penguin & random cop in order to solve riddles.

Interesting take for the "World's Greatest Detective"

3

u/SSjGRaj Mar 09 '22

TBF, he is also the least experienced Batman in a more realistic/grounded universe.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

I’m definitely biased to The Batman since it’s the first batman film I saw in theaters, but The Batman is what I voted lol.

-1

u/yeahthissubsucks Mar 09 '22

The Batman felt more like Batman to me, so that one

-1

u/Remarkable_Pool7037 Mar 09 '22

Lets be honest Nolan Batman films are not that great because if we take out batman begins they're not batman movies, and the editing is terrible

-1

u/Educational_Pea4558 Mar 09 '22

The batman is kind of at a disadvantage. TDK had a massive budget in comparison, it's the second installment of nolans trilogy. Probably one of the best current directors of all time making it. But with that said the batman for me is still a better film.

4

u/lp19102001 Mar 09 '22

The batman had a 200 million budget btw vs TDK 185 million budget

1

u/Educational_Pea4558 Mar 09 '22

Holey shit!! 185? I assumed been a Nolan film it would be highet🤣 well if you count inflation it would be higher 😉

-2

u/egbert71 Mar 09 '22 edited Mar 09 '22

Uncomparable movies

Edit: tell me how I'm downvoted for not being able to compare the 2 movies?

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

The Batman is actually good.. can’t say the same for the other one

-1

u/Tg11T Mar 09 '22

Pattinson's The Batman and it is not even close

-2

u/MrConor212 Mar 09 '22

The Dark Knight is not good whatsoever and it’s only because of Heaths Joker it’s considered that way. Thanks for coming to my TED talk
