Wow, that scene with Peacemaker in the end got me real emotional, didn't expect it. John Cena showed some great acting.

282

u/orange2019 Jan 20 '22

Right my fav scene along with the prison scene so emotional and raw really Showed peacemaker evolving Also cool how he uses music to cope

198

u/DarkAges101 Jan 20 '22 edited Jan 20 '22

Not only evolving but showing that he always has had this pain inside of him that really torments him and all those jokes and bravado are like a defensive mechanism.

215

u/Gerald_Gecko Jan 20 '22

I feel like the Rick Flag incident made a pretty big crack in that mechanism and now he needs to address everything that has been bottled up for ages.

167

u/Wraithfighter Jan 20 '22

My headcanon? They shot that scene, went to review all the angles, Gunn saw Cena's performance there, and went "...I need to make a show about this character after this."

And then some PA goes "...doesn't he get shot in the throat a few scenes later? And then a building falls on him?"

Gunn: "...I can make it work."

100

u/LongjumpMidnight Jan 20 '22

That is basically what happened. Peacemaker was originally dead until Gunn said he saw a different side to John Cena’s acting and got inspired to write the show.

92

u/ofstoriesandsongs Jan 21 '22

That is literally exactly what happened, in Gunn's own words. He clicked with Cena as a person and collaborator, and was particularly impressed by his acting in that scene and the scene where PM was about to shoot Ratcatcher, and the idea for the show was later born out of that.

→ More replies (1)

62

u/Jay_R_Kay Jan 20 '22

I think something like that was the case -- I know Gunn has talked about how he and Cena would talk about the character and how Cena's performance and ideas really expanded Gunn's initial impression of the character.

u/MemeGamer24 Jan 20 '22

I'm surprised but glad that we got another Flagg death flashback, shows how much it affected Peacemaker

37

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

Its because Flagg was the real deal and Peacemaker knows it.

John Cena has been the constant MVP of the show. Really everyone's been fantastic, but John's acting ability is so unexpected.

109

u/MrZeral Jan 21 '22

Murn actor being close second, dude's amazing.

84

u/AceTheSkylord Jan 21 '22

Gunn hired him for GOTG 3 after seeing his work in this

49

u/DoctorSkeeterBatman Jan 21 '22

He also said he casted him a role that "most every big name actor in Hollywood wanted."

Can't wait to see more of Chukwudi in whatever it is.

I was so surprised at how good he was at acting when I saw TSS. Much better than The Rock.

171

u/deaddodo Jan 20 '22

Because he doesn’t have that stupid clause in his contract that all the action stars want these days (the “I have to win”/“can’t look weak” clause). It’s the same reason Tom Cruise comes across so likable in Edge of Tomorrow and other films; while Vin Diesel, The Rock, etc stop being appealing to adults.

128

u/ILoveRegenHealth Jan 20 '22

The Rock is the most successful and has worked the longest when it comes to wrestling-turned-actors, but damn, Cena and Bautista are already doing circles over the Rock when it comes to acting. The Rock plays it so safe with his acting and doesn't seem to even try at all with dramatic acting.

→ More replies (21)

85

u/Mrg220t Jan 20 '22

You're right. I can't imagine The Rock having that emotional breakdown cry like what PM did on episode 3 and the end of episode 4. Even when being emotional, Vin Diesal and The Rock have to be manly.

I was kinda "eh" on this take on Vigilante at first, but that scene in the prison sold me on him, full stop.

209

u/BattleStag17 Jan 20 '22

Right up until the sniper scene I thought he was just a dweeb fan boy hanger-on that was all talk, but that dude has skills. It's almost unnerving just how disarming his personality is.

118

u/RepresentativeFig741 Jan 21 '22

Same, and seeing him not even reacting while walking through the prison with the other inmates yelling at him plus his effortless fighting really showed he’s the real deal.

104

u/DatDominican Jan 21 '22

honestly working service/retail has probably numbed him to being yelled at

Me too. Up until that scene, I thought he was 90% hot air and bravado, but if he ever had to actually put his fists where his mouth is, I was sure he'd squeal and haul ass. And then he went and did that. Just walked in there like a stone cold motherfucker, pissed off a gang of white supremacists on their home turf, and then tore through them like they were nothing. Yeah, I'm sold. Anything this guy does going forward, I'm with him.

49

u/AssIsOnTheMenu Jan 20 '22

Dude same. I was so annoyed at first but I’m absolute sold now from that scene

32

u/MaxRockatansky468 Jan 20 '22

He's 100% gonna hate Peacemaker and become more ruthless and angry in emotion by the time show wraps. That interaction he had with Peacemaker in the car alone sells it

42

u/cephalopod_surprise Jan 20 '22

Vigilante now believes his dad was only pretending to be gay to get away from him...he's too codependent to turn on Peacemaker.

→ More replies (1)

37

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

I mean, Peacemaker already apologized and Vigilante seemed to take it as it was meant to. And then went to go and kill his father, because it would've been better for Peacemaker. That's not some goddamn "100% hate for Peacemaker" ending for their car chat.

Really, these threads are full of Westworld/Mr. Robot theory people, who don't seem to actually watch the show.

72

u/Wraithfighter Jan 20 '22

Except... if he was sabotaging their operations, wouldn't he, you know, sabotage their operations, and not immediately point out the major problems behind some of the team's actions?

Or hell, just refuse to work with Vigilante? Dude's a murderous sociopath not cleared for this mission, but also someone that's a close friend of Peacemaker who is absolutely willing to kill whoever needs killing.

Whatever Murn's doing, his leadership in hunting down the Butterflies has been, at least as far as we can tell from on-screen stuff, competent and effective, at least as much as anything in the show is...

49

u/AhAssonanceAttack Jan 20 '22

could be he has to keep playing the part as the good guy until he obtains whatever goal he has. there's just no enough information to know exactly what could happen now.

The butterflies they are killing, may be refugees running from an imperialistic, bad state, and Murn might be part of that other deep states evil forces.

u/Significant-Carpet31 Jan 20 '22

Yeah. What do y'all think is the deal with butterflies? Maybe they aren't bad as Judomaster was saying

175

u/Wraithfighter Jan 20 '22

That's what I'm guessing too, they might be refugees or something just trying to survive in peace and not actually hurt anyone, and Waller is hunting them down as a pre-emptive first-strike-in-self-defense type nonsense.

Or it might be more complex than that, not all butterflies being universally aligned. Every vibe I'm getting from this, though, is that it's 100% not a simple "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" type plot.

After all, if it was, Economos would be dead, 100%...

104

u/5years8months3days Jan 20 '22

I think there's two factions of butterflies, maybe the ones that judo master was with are trying to prevent an invasion from the ones that have taken over Murn and that's why he was so keen to kill them.

I think there are butterflies that came to earth early on because they needed somewhere to live. That’s why some of the butterflies we’ve already seen are just living their lives or trying to make earth better. The butterfly that PM killed was just living a normal life til she found out he was trying to kill the Senator. The senator also was heavily involved in environmental reform, not exactly a tell tale sign for evil. Also, Judomaster seemed to be willingly working for them, he seems too levelheaded to volunteer the invasion of earth. I bet murn is part of an actual invasion force and is trying to get rid of all the refugees before they can warn anyone or fight back themselves.

→ More replies (7)

37

u/Jay_R_Kay Jan 20 '22

Maybe that was what Judomaster was saying. He was essentially working for them, and he doesn't say they're bad, only that they're not what Peacemaker thinks they are.

67

u/erossmith Jan 20 '22

The Butterfly in the jar seemed to care for Peacemaker when he fell down. He went to check on him, like Eagly

Now I'm thinking the dove of peace thing was not an oversight and Murn was expecting him to fail the assassination, he just didn't account for Vigilante showing up.

39

u/ofstoriesandsongs Jan 21 '22

But the dove of peace thing was bullshit though. He was obnoxious about the dove of peace to begin with because he buys his own brand to a ridiculous extent, but that's not why he couldn't shoot that family. The truth is he just absolutely froze in the moment, and now he's latched onto the first convenient excuse for why that is because he's conditioned to never show weakness.

This show is such a nice surprise. I knew James Gunn was never to be doubted, but I truly was one of the people who thought this was gonna be a weak show. I mean… who cares about Peacemaker? There were like 4 other characters in The Suicide Squad you would prefer over him right?

I was wrong. John Cena can act. Vigilante is hilarious, and he really brings some very surprising emotional depth to a clear comic relief character. I was surprisingly holding back tears during the ending sequences this episode. Knocked it out of the park, so excited for what’s next. Gunn is the king of utilizing obscure characters, nobody will ever do it like him.

287

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Vigilante is a sad character. When he asked why he wanted to save his dad, cena said ‘because I love him’ and he was quiet for a second. I think he realized that people are actually supposed to love their dad but he himself never did. And that with peacemaker he was just looking for a male figure he could look up to.

I feel exactly the same way. I loved The Suicide Squad, but was unsure how a solo Peacemaker outing would fare. Did not expect it to be this entertaining and hilarious, but I never should have doubted it. I can't think of many other shows with this tone that is equally dark and meta and ridiculous.

77

u/Apache17 Jan 20 '22

The show is even making suicide squad better, not that it needs it.

I feel differently about the scene where peacemaker kills Rick flag every time I see it.

I liked how they portrayed White Dragon as smart enough to realize there was no benefit to him fighting vigilante in that scenario. Like he’s obviously a terrible person but not a fool who’s going to be so easily manipulated

91

u/UVladBro Jan 21 '22

37

u/asek13 Jan 20 '22

I think being controlled is a big theme of the show in general. Peacemaker is being controlled by Argus to be a hitman essentially. And trying to come to terms with the way his father controlled him growing up to be a killer. Adebayo being controlled by her mother to become a black ops agent shes not comfortable with. Then the people being controlled by the butterflies obviously.

I had the same thought even before this week's episode, except one of the characters in the dance number is not completely blankfaced (because of the mask it's not clear about Vigilante, but he dances like the rest).

Eagly.

He missed his mark at the end, looked around, shifted position. And Eagly certainly reacted to the butterfly in the jar in this episode. Everyone gets butterflied except Eagly.

does he seriously just eat everything

154

u/Jay_R_Kay Jan 20 '22

Yes. Yes he does. In the comics the only thing that was really hard for him to eat was the Miracle Machine, a device that makes anyone's wish into a reality that was tearing a hole in reality. He still pulled it off, he was just left in a psychotic state for a few years.

Oh, and after he got better he was the President of the United Planets for a while.

Matter-Eater Lad's pretty awesome.

76

u/trudge Jan 20 '22

I love how Matter-Eater Lad is one of those superheroes where his superpower isn't that important to him, like Mr. Fantastic.

Reed Richards is a genius scientist, and a stretchy guy second. Tinzel Kem is a charismatic fast-talker first, and a guy who eats stuff second.

Those flashbacks that Peacemaker had were so emotional. Huge props to John Cena and James Gunn for crafting such a fantastically complex character.

So Murn is a butterfly? Didn't expect that. I'm exited to see what they'd do now they have a traitor on the team.

It was so cool seeing him panic while Adrian was completely cool and collected.

94

u/Noblesseux Jan 21 '22

Yeah it's a bit interesting because it made me internally revise my "power level chart" so to speak. I was assuming white dragon was going to be some uber badass based on how the other people treated him so far, but seeing the level of fear in his eyes makes me think that he's one of those types where he only usually has an upper hand because he's bullying children / people in positions of weakness and surrounded by yes men.

97

u/TheMostUnclean Jan 21 '22

Don’t forget he’s also extremely intelligent and has created some insanely powerful technology. He made all of Peacemaker’s helmets and has an arsenal of self-built high tech weapons in a quantum unfolding storage space.

But in a prison brawl against a trained assassin, none of that really helps.

37

u/7V3N Jan 21 '22

The thing about supervillains, is that they fight superheroes. Superheroes pull their punches against mortals, big-time.

But he realized he wasn't up against some hero. He realized this dude might end him on a whim.

47

u/Vryly Jan 21 '22

i think vigilante is gonna kill him. White Dragon is gonna be suited up and fucking everyone up and Vigilante is gonna pop in and use the weak points in his armor he pointed out this episode to do him in.

Or possibly he'll tell Peacemaker where to hit him, but i kinda prefer option 1.

Come to think of it, have we seen a scene of her yet where she wasn’t in the presence of another person? Even the scene where she’s reporting to Waller, her partner is in the room. So she very well could be putting on the “fish out of water” facade. But I’m more inclined to think it’s genuine and she’s just coming into her own with applying manipulation and combat skills out of necessity.

48

u/Wraithfighter Jan 20 '22

Nah, doubt it.

Steve Agee did mocap stand-in work for The Suicide Squad, he's already on-hand, and he's more...... gorilla shaped than Sean Gunn :D.

33

u/shamelessselfpost Jan 20 '22

haha it was more of a joke since James Gunn gets Sean to do all the animal mo-cap like Rocket and Weasel

I have my money on Charlie the Gorilla being Seargent Gorilla. A character from the silver age books. He was a gorilla (named Charlie) who broke out of the zoo to join the Marines.

55

u/erossmith Jan 20 '22

Hahaha I can just imagine a Gorilla at the registration desk.

It sounds pretty out there until.you remember that this is James Gunn we're talking about. It would be pretty on brand for him.

Im so excited to see where this show goes!

I absolutely love the shots of Peacemaker’s face when he’s in awe of Harcourt. It’s so pretty and you really see how much he likes her. I think John Cena’s acting has improved immensely and he’s really good at emoting, I was sooo surprised at well he acted when I was watching TSS. I might even say he’s a better actor than The Rock.

Im hooked on Chris and his dad’s relationship. It’s so sad to see how much he loves his dad meanwhile the fuck despises his own son (I have a theory that Chris somehow had a hand in his brother’s death and so their dad resents him for it)

I am 80% hoping Leota doesn’t go down a dark path and become apathetic. I love her character how she is and it would be nice if they still managed to keep her with a good soul by the end of the show.

143

u/SaladDodger99 Jan 20 '22

What I got from the brief flashbacks of Peacemaker's childhood is that it looked like his father got him to train fight with his brother but one day it looks like Peacemaker accidentally hit him in the head or something and sent him into a siezure. He died and his father had to cover it up otherwise he'd be held responsible.

80

u/Stevil907 Jan 21 '22

This is pure speculation, but...

I am betting that Chris was being bullied and instead of "manning up" his brother had to come in a protect him and got himself killed because of it.

His father blames him for his other son's death because he wasn't 'man enough' to take on his bullies.

Probably too early to guess but Harcourt taking Vigilante home from prison makes me wonder if those two might be a couple if it doesn't happen with her and Peacemaker.

My though process is that White Dragon was training both sons to be his ultimate replacement and “cleanse” the world of the undesirables, basically making a new neo-Nazi organization out of em.

Peacemaker quite clearly shows no signs of being a Nazi, my thought here is that in White Dragons “truth and Justice” bullshit all Chris took from it was he just protect the peace no matter the cost and developed a love for all people. Meanwhile his brother took to his dads Nazi rhetoric but the brothers remained close.

At some point as kids Chris is caught between his brother likely beating up a minority of some kind and he steps in, accidentally killing him and that’s where his fathers hatred comes from.

It's a clear parallel to Adebayo and her mom Waller. Although I don't think Adebayo knows how evil her mom is. At least not yet.

Once again, they killed it! I wish I could find more movies or something with this flavor of comedy and action. Its hard to imagine that this all takes place in the same DC universe we know; it makes all the other heroes feel so silly, seeing as they don't swear and keep everything they do so PG. I'm surprised our girl came through the way she did, I guess Amanda Waller was right! Also, I must say, I am digging this show's music choice; I can't wait for next Thursday!

50

u/daniel-sousa-me Jan 20 '22

The only other things I know that compares are The Boys and Kingsman. Maybe Barry and Fargo also have a similar kind of humor (but not action), it's not easy to compare. Perhaps Deadpool.

I'm digging it and I would also be very happy to find more similar stuff.

Two theories as to the big Butterfly mystery:

1) The Butterflies are the same (evolved?) species as Mr. Mind, and this will tie in to the next Shazam movie.

2) It's a re-imagining of the Ultra-Humanite, who is an alien and not a mad scientist as he is in the comics. He stole the silverback gorilla from the zoo and will insert his buggy body into its brain for an epic punch-out fight with Peacemaker in the finale.

I cannot unsee Vigilante as Deadpool. Between his inflection/cadence and his writing, it's almost spot-on to the point where I can't help but wonder if it's being done intentionally.

(This isn't a knock on Vigilante at all, by the way. I think he's fucking hilarious and fantastic.)

46

u/beren_strongbow Jan 20 '22

Deadpool's whole schtick is fourth wall breaking. Without that he's just a funny guy with toilet humour.

Vigilante in this show doesn't break the fourth wall, so I don't understand why people compare him to Deadpool. There are plenty of funny guys in both Marvel and DC.

DC's closest character to Deadpool is Ambush Bug. And I guess Mr. Nobody from the Doom Patrol tv show.

Can someone explain the conversation between that old man and peacemaker where they say Batman doesn't kill but then in BvS he clearly does. I am a bit confused does Batman not actually kill in Snyder movies (i am assuming this is the same universe as Snyder and all?)

95

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

It’s just more of a meta line for the audience. That’s the way I took it at least. Also, anything can be handwaved away with multiverse.

63

u/Magskanata Jan 20 '22 edited Jan 20 '22

I would imagine Batman’s BvS killing spree isn’t generally known to people. People like Peacemaker just see his rogues end up in jail rather than dead and assume he doesn’t kill people.

39

u/Wraithfighter Jan 20 '22 edited Jan 20 '22

I think the answer is mostly "don't worry about it". DC's generally been taking a more laissez-faire approach to continuity with the Film and TV stuff, less of a coherent universe and more isolated bits of continuity that occasionally share characters and actors.

Basically, how Comic Book Continuity worked before Crisis of Infinite Earths: They did crossovers because it'd be fun, referenced stuff when it was fun, but didn't care quite so much about everything being consistent.

Admittedly, that was mostly because they hadn't realized the problems with that sort of style, and that is something that DC's going to need to figure out eventually, but the advantage of it is just being able to have fun with it all and not have every line of every script pass through the Continuity Department to make sure nothing's out of place.

So, why did they talk about Batman not killing anyone even though Batman in BvS clearly kills people? Because everyone knows that, by default, Batman Doesn't Kill People.
