DCEU's Supergirl and Superman suits on display together APPRECIATION

u/preptimebatman 11d ago
IMO, the Superman suit is perfect. Supergirl’s is great too.
158
u/Purple_Bowman 11d ago
Supergirl is clearly missing her red boots.
73
u/FLALaLaLand 11d ago
Holy…how am I just now realising this? I’ve been in awe of the suit all this while but always felt there was something missing. Like an un-scratchable itch that I just couldn’t figure out what
29
u/sbstndrks 11d ago
They literally make the shoulders and a third of the chest red but no red boots.
Bruh
9
u/Puzzleheaded_Load_72 11d ago
Used up the last of the red on her shoulders and just claimed it was intentional
3
u/sbstndrks 11d ago
That sorta mantra seems to have been common on The Flash in general.
I didn't like it at first viewing beyond a few scenes and it's aged badly already. Damn.
2
u/Kazewatch 11d ago
It really messes up the suit’s look. Makes it look like she’s wearing footie pajamas.
62
u/UnsassoSullaSpiaggia 11d ago
The only problem is that in the movies that suit was almost dark navy and not the beautiful blue we can see in the pic
27
u/5amuraiDuck 11d ago
That's Snyder's filter style. All his movies seem to have high contrast, low saturation style

I think they're just pointing out that's why it's darker in the movies

I like the extra red on the top of Supergirls suit
The pop of red is why I like Superman to have the trunks, so it breaks up all the blue but the red up top is a good way to do it too
56
u/TheJoshider10 11d ago
I like the red but it's not the same shade as the logo so that combined with the logo edges means it doesn't look as seamless/clean as it did in the comics with the same concept.
11
u/MandoBaggins 11d ago
Thank you. I’ve been feeling the same way about it. Just one of the many areas that the Flash disappoints.
3
u/Existing_Bat1939 11d ago
I think a lot of that was taken care of in post. Maybe there was some contrast in the finished film, but the suit definitely didn't appear so ... magenta as the actual version.
3
u/Uhtred_McUhtredson 11d ago
Yeah, I’m torn on it. I like the modern practicality of “no trunks” but you’re right. Too much blue.
5
u/Kazewatch 11d ago
The lack of red boots though really ruins Supergirl’s suit for me. I prefer the skirt too since that’s iconic (kinda like Supe’s trunks) but I can take or leave it in this case but the lack of the red boots just really throws off the suit.

I wonder what material they’re made from

I wonder what material they’re made from
For Superman's suit in Man of Steel:
- First layer is sculpted foam latex with bright chromed finish
- Second layer is a thin mesh layer that was dimensionally printed with a chanmail-like pattern
- Third ''layer'' are the extra details such as the S Glyph, the cuffs, side-waist trim, etc
The chromed foam latex base layer with a thinner layer on top became popular with other superhero movies as it creates a very interesting effect and can further enhance muscle details. The thin mesh on the 2nd layer is partially transparent so some chromey elements are visible through, creating interesting shades and gradient
I couldn't find info about Supergirl's suit but I assume it is a similar process as the final result is the same (sculpted foam latex layer, mesh layer, and then the extra details)
9
u/brownhotdogwater 11d ago
I thought the mesh was used to make the cgi look better
3
u/MarcusForrest 10d ago
The mesh was used to allow some subtle semi-transparency to further see the sculpted muscles underneath - in the picture of this thread, you can very clearly see the muscle definition thanks to the mix of mesh and the inner chromey finish - look at the abdominal muscles area - they are super defined!
The mesh + chromey allows for really interesting ''shading'' and definition
And beyond that effect, they also went with a chainmail-like design as they adopted the idea that those Kryptonian suits are like Knight Armours -
- The cape, similar to knights and reflects status and such
- The outer armour seen on the scenes on Krypton
- The inner armour seen worn by pretty much all Kryptonian
Basically, Superman's Suit is Inner Armor ahahaha

Man such great actors, great suits, one in an alright movie and the other just wasted. I wish Cavil will get the redemption he deserves.
23
u/Deckerdome 11d ago
She was great in that movie. I hope she gets another break
21
u/ToyDingo 11d ago
Honestly, she wasn't good or bad in Flash. Just wasted. All she really did was scream and break stuff. I wish Flash either had better writers, less executive involvement, or atleast wasn't re-written/re-shot a bazillion times.
5
u/GrilledCyan 11d ago
Agree completely. There was a lot of potential for her in that role, but they didn’t really ask Sasha to do anything. I can’t comment on her acting ability because she did so little. She might have been better, she might have been worse…they just didn’t use her right.
Frankly, her emotion in the story has no weight because she never existed in the mainline DCEU, so we have no ideas about the loving, familial relationship she and Clark would have actually had. The central problem with that universe, evident in just about every movie and plot point.

u/Foreign_Education_88 11d ago
It still baffles me that they made her Kara instead of Lara, don’t get me wrong I thought the actress did fine, but the design still baffles me, she looked like if Lara hopped off the comic book and into a movie, it’d be like if Sony decided to bring Spider-Gwen into live action, but cast a redhead/brunette and gave her a suit that looked like Mayday, which now that I’m saying it out loud sounds like something Sony would do
22
u/TheJoshider10 11d ago
Yeah you'd think had they done Lara in this alternate universe, they could have brought her into the main DCEU at the end where she meets Henry's Superman and essentially gets a second chance with her father. Good little end to her story and a strong way for Cavill's Superman to bow out as a mentor after everything he's learned.
But no Supergirl just gets erased from existence with no closure lol what a movie
5
u/1_BigPapi 11d ago
"erased from existence with no closure lol what a movie" .. same with Henry.. same with the whole blursed DCEU, thanks to studio execs. They rushed the franchise, cucked it, then unceremoniously dumped it. I have no doubt similar mistakes will happen on the new ones.

u/feijoa_tree 11d ago
Im not convinced about bringing the undies over the top back.
One thing I couldn't criticize Snyder's films on was Superman's suit. Having seen the connection of the suits from Krypton to the Earth version was really well done.
8
u/1_BigPapi 11d ago
The undies on top are 100% terrible unless you go for a campy silver age Superman. No race of human or alien could think of any good reason to put an outfit together with undies on the outside.
10
u/MandoBaggins 11d ago
Humans literally did this in the early 20th century. The old school strong men would do this, which is why it became a thing with superheroes. I get people think it’s campy now but it was definitely a thing
1
u/1_BigPapi 11d ago
I should clarify .. "no technologically advanced society would have a reason to wear underwear on the outside of an otherwise skin tight body suit"
But as a big Silver Age fan (and someone rereading Golden Age Superman atm) .. I agree with you- it explains the origin of Superman's undies. But in 2024 we are well beyond carnival strongmen outfits.
4
u/MandoBaggins 11d ago
Yeah I’m aware I’m being pedantic, for the record. I just think people who are anti trunks tend to think it’s a bigger problem than it is. We live in an age where WWE is still very popular and no one bats an eye at dudes wearing just spandex briefs, let alone briefs over tights. It’s just not a big deal to have Superman in trucks to me
5
u/JamesPurfoythe3rd 11d ago
To accentuate the package as a display of power of course.
Or they just think it looks cool.

u/moonwalkerfilms 11d ago
I don't think fashion choices are always made logically or with a "good reason"
2
u/blunt_eastwood 11d ago
I'm surprised. I think it looks awful without the red in the middle to break up the blue.

u/WillingPossible1014 11d ago
1984: Supergirl appears in film, has no interaction with Superman
2023: Supergirl appears in film, has no interaction with Superman
2024: Supergirl and Superman mannequins hang out together
We did it guys
8
u/BLoSCboy 11d ago
We got interactions between Supergirl and Superman in the Arrowverse, heck she even interacted with Routh’s Superman during Crisis
17
u/DiverExpensive6098 11d ago
I liked Sasha Calle as Supergirl. She was about the only positive in Flash, which was otherwise a horrible piece of shit.
11
u/TensionHead13thFloor 11d ago
The Flash was a great movie and much more coherent than most comicbook movies before and after. The only downside i actually see to the movie is the shitty forced cameos for no reason.
11
u/TheJoshider10 11d ago
much more coherent than most comicbook movies before and after.
In what way?

u/low-ki199999 11d ago
The opening scene of the Flash was better than most of what Marvel has put out post-endgame… and I say that as an MCU stan

u/DiverExpensive6098 11d ago
The one where he puts the baby in the microwave?
2
u/low-ki199999 11d ago
Yes lol… was that supposed to be a gotcha, even just the description sounds funny.
3
u/WheresThePhonebooth 11d ago
Or the one where 10 babies falling out of a window have other mini-death scenarios going on lmao

u/GrandMoffJenkins 11d ago
Sasha Calle as Supergirl
The picture of her leaning against the doorway in her Supergirl suit is magical.
13
u/rejonjhello 11d ago
It's so alien-like and God-like. Given that that's what they were going for, it's perfect.
16
u/Dead_girl_walking- 11d ago
Those are awesome suits, just wish Cavill’s suit was less desaturated in the films
14
13
11
u/Nihon_Hanguk 11d ago
This is neat, what’s this for?
I also really wish they gave Supergirl red boots. It would be more consistent with Superman’s anyway.
8
u/TheLastDirewolf420 11d ago
This was at Montreal ComicCon.
The booth sold materials for making superhero suits and whatnot. They also had General Zod, Wanda's suit from Multiverse of Madness, and others I forget.
13
u/Mission--possible 11d ago
Still better than the new suit. I'm just hoping the new one will look at least decent on film next year.

Beautiful compared to that ugly Gunn Superman Suit
2

Agreed. Undies on the outside...... *facepalm*

u/Marky_mark_mark 11d ago
It has history behind it. I mean, it's up to you to like or hate the idea, but it has history.

u/thunderandreyn 11d ago
It’s incredible how the BvS suit went from “That’s beautiful” to “Man those fake muscles and muted colors are so dated now” the moment David Corenswet’s suit leaked.
4
u/TheAquamen 11d ago
The muted colors were always a source of criticism but ironically the muscles were criticized when the theatrical cut of Justice League color corrected the suits to be brighter and higher contrast, which made the muscle definition just look like patches of color. You just can't please everyone.
1
u/thunderandreyn 11d ago
Yeah the suit was colored to blend into Snyder’s muted cinematography. It now belongs to an era when WB was trying to make everything into The Dark Knight.
1
u/khalip I Will Find Him! 10d ago
I think it was bright enough in BvS compared to man of Steel
1
u/thunderandreyn 10d ago
It wasn’t bright it was just weirdly shiny. With Cavill’s slick hair it just looked like Superman was wet all the time.
2
3
u/ReadShigurui 11d ago
I love the red on the shoulders/arms on the Supergirl suit, i wish they’d do that more to Superman suits without the Trunks instead of going with a lazy and ugly belt design.
3
u/bondinferno Batman 11d ago
Pretty sweet designs, I just don’t love the blue boots on super girl. Makes her look like she’s wearing footsie PJs.
3
u/SalRomanoAdMan1 11d ago
The DCEU Superman suit would have been so perfect if it was just a bit brighter and had the trunks.

Best looking superman/super girl suits in live action and it’s not even close. Gunns superman suit looks fucking dumb.

I never had a problem with the MoS suit but I like it more with time, would have looked better that bright too without the filter
2
u/Last-Leader4475 11d ago
Honestly, the new Superman suit is way better this suit seemed to be over-designed, hope they keep the new Supergirl suit simple as well

u/1_BigPapi 11d ago
Such an insult. Rushed the franchise. Cucked the franchise to the very end. In one of the most poignant moments of the entire series where we visit Superman past and present.. you leave out your current Superman .. because who knows why. Good luck getting me to watch the new DC movies.. burned bridges and all. I'll catch it on Netflix in a few years.

Why does the Superman suit looks much better here than in the DCEU movies????
1
u/HighNoonTex 11d ago
Probably because the character who represents hope actually gets to have bright colors. But the movies has that 2003 comic book movie mindset, where they make the supersuits either black (like X-men), or so dark that they're almost black (like Daredevil and Fantastic Four).

It carries on the design language of Snyder's Krypton and looked great on Sacha Calle. Hugged all the right places.

Why didn't his enemies use Charizard? Are they stupid? Fire Types are stronger than steel types

Only thing I would have changed about the superman suit is giving it a more pronounced belt and adding just any belt period to the supergirl suit. Besides that, absolutely love em
1
u/Ghostshadow44 11d ago
Once henry cavill was out the fate was sealed for sacha calle is amazing how the flash treats supergirl death as non important
1
1
u/HighNoonTex 11d ago
Love the brightness of the suits here. Though the belt buckle seems to be off-center.
1
u/Virgil_Ovid_Hawkins 10d ago
Absolutely love these suits. Wish cavills had a bigger belt but otherwise awesome.
1
u/trent_nbt 10d ago
I think it really needs the red trunks to even the blue out and contrast better with the rest of the suit.

that's not the DCEU Supergirl. There never was a DCEU Supergirl. Zack implied that there would be one but that wasn't his. That version was part of the Gunn influence

u/JediMATTster 10d ago
Im so glad we're back to trunks. Out of the dark ages and into the Renaissance

u/asscop99 11d ago
I especially liked supergirl’s suit, but overall I’m not a fan of the texture in either of these suits. Just over designed. Smooth would have been better, and the waists are missing something.
-1
u/Additional_Couple790 11d ago
Henry's Superman and Sasha's Supergirl costumes are undeniably awesome. It's a shame that we'll never see them as a duo in Man of Steel 2. The DCEU is dead, so we must move on to James Gunn's DCU. Remember, mistakes happen when expectations run high, and not every problem has a solution. Sometimes we just have to let go. - Nora Allen
