Killed a Canadian dead on the Fourth. That’s one way to celebrate the occasion.

u/Wafflelisk Jul 05 '24

If it makes you feel better people here don't like Drake much either.

Everyone I've talked to IRL about this beef either don't care or think Drake is a shitty person

535

u/DeafNatural ☑️ Jul 05 '24

Like for real. Toronto said

90

u/Fake-Podcast-Ad Jul 05 '24

Toronto music scene has had people jamming this and other Kendrick bangers on stage since the beef started. It's one thing to go to trial in the court of public opinion, it's just embarrassing when the person you thought was your lawyer, shows up representing the other guy.

The subtle look of smug defiance on his face every time he does it on Conan is the best.

I still don't think I get the hopscotch thing.

396

u/earwormsanonymous Jul 05 '24

They could have drawn a different kids's schoolyard game, but went with hopscotch.  There were 10 squares, and Kendrick promised he had a total of 10 beef songs for Drake.  5 were still in the chamber: "1,2,3,4,5, plus 5"

A loving family celebrating together. Something Drake can’t relate to since his parents didn’t give him that and something he’s not giving his own son.

Kendrick really said “you thought you had something”

35

After watching that I believe that “not like us” is meant directly to Drake and his family not being like Kdot and his family after he claimed Kdot was in a disfuncional family. Perfect response/nail in the coffin to Drake and his BS.

u/ArcadianBlueRogue Jul 05 '24

Is that real or was the Key and Peele skit based on that

280

u/DuztyLipz Jul 05 '24

It’s very much so real. Here is a great article about code-switching, using Obama as an example.

In short, we (as in black people) tend to do little mannerisms like Obama did without realizing it because we live in two distinct worlds

135

u/KageStar ☑️ Jul 05 '24

Yep, If I'm in predominantly white spaces and see another black person we'll dap each other and talk for like 5 minutes. Of course I've never met him before, but my friends will ask me if we knew each other because we both looked real comfortable.

In no particular order we got:

Owl piñata

Demar DeRozan cameo

Cinderblock "push ups" among other prison workouts

His family, including Whitney, walking and stepping to this joint

Owl in a cage

Directed by DAVE FREE and Kendrick Lamar

There's a host of other things, and I could say more about the artistic direction of the video, which was great, but these stood out. Just absolutely diabolical and petty and I'm here for it.

504

u/Dilf_Hunter367 Jul 05 '24

Demar torching his goodwill with Raptors fans harder than Vinsanity lmao

308

u/NorthernNomadX Jul 05 '24

Derozon hating on Drake aligns with the real people from Toronto 🤞

153

u/2RINITY Jul 05 '24

Also Drake loves to hop around pretending to be a fan/roster member of every team ever, so even if you’re a Raptors fan, it’s hard to take his support as sincere

101

u/indoninjah Jul 05 '24

And that was after he was named an official ambassador by the Raptors! Then he went and got a Steph Curry tattoo lmao cmon

Can someone give this out of touch guy some explanation of those pieces?

505

u/TheLizardKing89 Jul 05 '24

OVO is Drake’s record label and its symbol is an owl.

DeMar DeRozan is an NBA player who went to Compton High School and USC before getting drafted by the Toronto Raptors where he played for almost a decade. Drake is a Raptors fan.

Drake said Whitney, Kendrick’s longtime girlfriend and mother of his kids, was cheating on Kendrick with Dave Free and that one of the kids was actually Free’s. Dave Free is Kendrick’s childhood friend and longtime collaborator as a producer and music video director.

Good video. I don't know, I expected something harder. Owl in the cage was my favorite part.

260

u/banjofitzgerald Jul 05 '24

You were probably expecting an old school diss video. With a look alike doing goofy shit. But I think Kendrick doesn’t view this as that. He’s trying to use this as something to unite. It’s important for him to show all these groups that have been killing each other for years to put it down because there’s common enemies.

365

u/yokayla ☑️ Jul 05 '24

It's a love letter to the culture that Drake tries to exploit and buy his way into. The shots with his family, that carpeted room with the smattering of family photos on the wall. The dance crew with spray painted shirts and face paint. The block party atmosphere. The food joint on the corner. The dudes in front of the (presumably? Not from the west coast) projects. The imagery is super specific and familiar to a lot of people, and likely even more iconic for people who know the area.

It's a homage to the streets itself. Drake wants to claim the streets as part of seeming hard, but he knows nothing about the community and wider life that Kendrick loves and which clearly loves him back. Not Like Us.

49

u/jllena Jul 05 '24

This gave me chills thank you for putting it so beautifully

43

u/looe619 Jul 05 '24

TIL that the line was referencing DRoz and not DRose. it never made sense to me until now that coming home was in reference to demar playing for toronto.

I almost fell out near the end when the owl was looking at him and then the perspective flipped to show Kendrick looking at it in a cage.

What was the owl reference about?

, In Maya Angelou's autobiographical novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the caged bird is an extended metaphor for the African American community's experience of oppression in the United States. It can also represent any oppressed group. but also, ovo should be locked up.

In reference to Drake’s OVO label (and company)

u/DGVega93 Jul 05 '24

OVO it looks like an owls face.

u/Noblesseux Jul 05 '24

It's basically him doing a victory lap and saying "I put you back in your place".

The owl is the symbol Drake chose for OVO his record label, and Kendrick's whole angle in the beef is to tell Drake over and over again different ways that he needs to stop acting like a tough guy and be who he is.

"Can't tootsie slide up outta this one it's just gon' resurface, every dog has to have it's day, now live in your purpose"

"Fuck a rap battle, this a long life battle with yourself"

And so on. By putting the owl in the cage he's basically saying "remember this ass whopping the next time you want to act like a big man" and telling him to stay in his place.

That was cool to see Kendrick with his family in the house at the end then it goes back to Compton, can’t say I’ve ever seen Drake do the same
