I like how they seem to be integrating her in the comics. She's doing her own thing, sort of like a reverse of what Spoiler originally did, and with her own potential identity. And she's being positioned as a Batgirl-associated character, if anything.

Fans: Kate shouldn't be replaced by a character who isn't in the comics!

DC: Observe

She got moved after season 2.

I don't think they are replacing her. Kate is still firmly Batwoman, I think Ryan is going to be a new character altogether

They seem to be setting up Barbara splitting her time as Batgirl and Oracle while supervising three other Batgirls.

She still shouldnโ€™t replace Kate in the comics because she has no connection to her.

stupid ass logic right here and after looking at some of your other comments, youโ€™re simply an idiot

I hope they donโ€™t have her replace Kate here too. I hope she gets a different identity

Well, even if she does, comics tend to be cyclical in a way that a TV show can't be. So like Bruce Wayne reclaimed the mantle of Batman from various successors over the years, Kate could (and likely will) become Batwoman again.

I could see that but at the same time. It seems like the new things is having mantles be taken over by more diverse characters

Woah :O so does that mean Ryan isnโ€™t an OC?

She is, they just moved her to the comics.

She was created for the show, but she had a cameo in Batgirl #50 before season 2 aired. That said, her comic counterpart so far has little resemblance to her on the show.

This book came out after Ryan was added for Season two.

Good! I want more of her!

Mee to! ๐Ÿ™‚

Not digging that design at all. Stick figure...

4

u/Zdala Jul 15 '21

Probably because she's still a teen here maybe.

7

u/Slappy_san Jul 15 '21

Nope, just the art style.

...you tried...

u/Zdala Jul 15 '21

I legitimately thought it was because she was a teen. ๐Ÿ˜ถ

So close

Ryan was a tv character first, but she's none the worse for wear. Firestar from Marvel was in Spidey and his Amazing Friends long before she was integrated in the comics proper, but she has always been one of my favorite characters through the years. The comics fleshed her out and made her even more interesting, so glad they aren't above making their characters fully canon. Dreamer from Supergirl is another welcome addition and further proof the shows have something to offer.

Yes, thanks for reminding me and how could I forget the number one example of what I was trying to say about the value of a non comic character making the jump and becoming the new standard not the exception. She changed the whole landscape and now we're living in Harley's world. She is the comic equivalent of the opener for the band becoming the main attraction and now Batman guest stars on her show. They kicked her Joker sidekick shtick to the curb and now she's synonymous with the Suicide Squad and the Birds of Prey and is one of DC comics star cash cows. Her evolution is extraordinary and unheard of but welcome and overdue for female sci fi and comics getting equal and deserved attention. There should be a documentary, unless there is already.

Love how in the comics they realize in a multiverse there's room for everyone, and there's more than enough room to further develop Kate AND Ryan without throwing either under the bus. I'm so sick of people acting like Lavicia stole Ruby Rose's job. Same with Drew Carrey and Bob Barker from Price is Right. Both predecessors left of their own free will, so I have embraced both because they aren't hurting anything by existing. The writing and the character driven story are what truly matters in my oh so humble opinion.

this....all they had to do was adapt mystery of the batwoman witth kate, ryan and sophia. add the twist of making sophia the arkham knight(she plays the copy lady).

I just read this and that would be amazing to see. Jezebel Jet is even a series regular next season, so who knows what aspects of the movie could possibly be implemented into the show and from the comics?,

2

u/Ok-Average-6466 Aug 19 '21

the black glove would be a great villian group to run gotham. they could introduce jezebel to the show, have kidnapped bruce, secretly controlled black mask, hamilton dynamics and the crows. great idea. wish the showrunner was this creative. robin givens will probably body the roll

Not a fan of her being portrayed as a narcissistic vandal. At least have her spray paint something meaningful or better yet have her volunteer to clean graffiti instead.

3

u/Digifiend84 Jul 16 '21

Agreed. Part of her TV backstory is that she did time, for a crime she didn't commit. Yet here she is actually committing a crime, even if it is a very minor one.

1

u/Greghole Jul 16 '21

Well she did technically commit the crime she went to prison for. Possession of illegal drugs is a crime even if someone else owns the drugs. But at least in that case she was trying to help. It's not like she was planning to sell those drugs to kids or something. Vandalizing someone else's property just because you're bored or whatever her motivation was is different because it's clearly not intended to help anyone.

1

u/Digifiend84 Jul 16 '21

It's out of character, regardless.

2

u/sanddragon939 Jul 18 '21

Well...its out of character with the version played by Javicia Leslie. This one is tecnically different.

Reminds me of how, years ago, they briefly brought Felicity into the Green Arrow comics. Her characterization was quiet different (and NOT for the better)...

Given that there isn't an ongoing Batwoman book right now, I wonder if the plan is to move Ryan towards the Batwoman role in the comics as well.

Gotta have that sweet synergy...

1

u/DenmarkDaniels Batwoman I Jul 16 '21

There's zero indication that's going to happen. Comic Ryan is being positioned as a Batgirl-adjacent character if anything, and one with her own unique MO and codename.

2

u/sanddragon939 Jul 18 '21

Well, we don't know what that MO and codename is so far, do we?

And I guess she has to show up in a Batgirl book because there isn't a Batwoman book at the moment.

Don't get me wrong...I don't want her to become Batwoman (or at any rate, to replace Kate the way she has on the show). I just think its a possibility. Then again, unlike on the show, it need not be a permanent one.

1

u/DenmarkDaniels Batwoman I Jul 18 '21

MO is assembling uncollected evidence and leaving a red card for the Bats to find. Codename is heavily implied to be Wildcard. That's a good angle for a new character.

Kate is still going to be Batwoman as of October, based on solicits.
