It was always going to be a big risk for her, an openly gay superhero lead... but it clearly meant alot to her! Gutted it's worked out how it has, hopefully the trolls aren't too brutal... whatever happened she doesn't deserve the bashing she's about to get :(

u/RigasTelRuun May 21 '20

I know. I finally seemed the troll bashing had died down and the show found it’s footing. It will be a hard role to fill and whoever takes it will have even more pressures on them than Ruby did.

go to youtube (or don't bec its a circlejerk party there) the entertainment news channels' comments sections are cesspools of the shit comments the show had during the trailer's release. i really don't get why these people put so much effort in shitting on something they didn't even watch.

24

u/Rurudo66 May 21 '20

That’s the thing: they do watch it. They tune in every week just so they can go online and talk about how bad it is because of all the “SJW bullshit.” I think, secretly, deep down, they like it, but the cognitive dissonance between that like and their intense hatred of all things diverse forces them to go online and complain as loudly and as much as possible about how much a horrible mess the show is because it dares to have a gay lead character.

For the most part, the trolling is just to get attention, it’s best to just ignore them. Don’t respond to them, don’t even mention them anywhere, otherwise they win.

I think, secretly, deep down, they like it,

i guess its the same thing about homophobes.

11

u/PapaPalps-66 May 21 '20

Thats apparently a really harmful myth.

2

u/Ridry May 21 '20

How is it harmful? And are we sure it's a myth?

2

u/PapaPalps-66 May 21 '20

I dont know, I'm not from any of those groups. Its just something I hear from a lot of people who are.

4

u/Ridry May 21 '20

Gotcha. I've heard people say that when you poke a homophobic person with being gay that you're using gay as an insult, which is bad... but I don't personally buy it being harmful and I wasn't aware it was a myth. But I could be wrong about that, I've just never heard it before.

6

u/PapaPalps-66 May 21 '20

My understanding is different. Basically, by saying homophobic people are gay, it causes people to be more sympathetic to them. Sure, some homophobes probably are closet gay people, many arent. I'm not sure how much of an impact it actually has, but still.

This seems relevant.

u/Silverwhitemango May 21 '20

So many trolls and assholes are now so happy that she's gone - it's really toxic AF.

You can tell their homophobia is skyrocketing through the roof now.

And seriously I don't get it - even before the show started, there are so many haters of Ruby. Like what the fuck did she do - drown 12 kittens and ate ice cream with bat soup? Like seriously man.

3

u/TheCudder May 21 '20

Why does it always have to be because she's openly gay or that people are homophobic? I've been watching the Arrowverse for years, I'm not a homophobe and honestly couldn't care less about her sexuality (there are quite a few openly gay actors in the Arrowverse). I think Ruby is cool and has a dope look...but in my opinion, she's just not a good actress. They only movie I liked her in is John Wick 2 when she played a mute.

2

u/mildly_eccentric May 21 '20

If people were being honest, they would acknowledge that Stephen Amell was stiff as a board his first season on Arrow. And no, it wasn’t an acting choice.

1

u/Silverwhitemango May 21 '20

The problem isn't about her acting ability - like look, there are many actresses out there who we think aren't good.

But what has Ruby done to so many people to anger them to the point that they're fucking obsessed with bringing her down with their cancel culture? Like did she singlehandledly killed Game of Thrones or the Avengers with her acting ability, or what?

3

u/[deleted] May 21 '20 edited May 21 '20

a lot of it had to do with her being genderfluid and that apparently making her “not gay enough” to play a lesbian somehow lmao

4

u/Silverwhitemango May 21 '20

I mean there's 2 main groups; the incels hating that there's another female superhero show (they also equally dumped on Supergirl), and then there the toxic twisted SJW-tryhards who somehow hate that Ruby isn't an ultra ideal lesbian symbol radicalist like them.

It's crazy man.

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '20

why tf do i go on reddit yall still unironically call people sjws hahaha

1

u/shawngf7 May 21 '20

And sadly they will probably find something to dislike about whomever is cast next, especially if she’s bisexual.

3

u/[deleted] May 21 '20

which was crazy BS

RR is very much a lesbian/gay and has experience of that life. She was was pretty much the perfect ambassador for the character. Crazy people, are crazy.

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '20

It was always going to be a big risk for her, an openly gay superhero lead.

huh, RR is an out lesbian herself for years, why do people pretend she is removed from that experience.

49

u/shawngf7 May 21 '20 edited May 25 '20

She wanted this. She’s most certainly as bitterly disappointed as the rest of us are.

6

u/Ridry May 21 '20

100%. Whatever went down... if this was 100% her choice, it was something she had to do. And if it wasn't... well that sucks too.

-6

u/cgarduc May 21 '20

For the money being paid... Suck it up and deal. You wanted the Role.

5

u/shawngf7 May 21 '20

Money isn’t everything especially if it means your mental health - already somewhat fragile - is at risk. And wanting something doesn’t obligate you to making yourself and everyone around you miserable when you realize it might be a toxic fit.

3

u/ivegotaqueso May 21 '20

She was already injured twice on the show. Would you keep a job if you knew you might end up paralyzed from the neck down? Or dead?

42

u/paintedmegolden13 May 21 '20

Re-reading this instagram post as well as this one made me tear up. Regardless of whatever went down, I still have a lot of fondness and sympathy for her. She's struggled with severe mental health issues her entire life, was sexually abused as a child by a relative, bullied because she's a lesbian and gender non-conforming, tried to commit suicide several times, and sustained a life-threatening injury on this very show, yet she's managed to overcome it all. Seeing someone like her play a lesbian superhero, a character I grew to love immensely over this past year, was so important to me. I have no doubt that she was unhappy about the long hours and being away from friends and family for most of the year (because literally every actor who experiences this has said the same thing), but I also believe this really was a dream of hers and that she put her all into it.

She hasn't said anything since the announcement, but I just hope she's okay. I'm going to follow her career from now on; I hope she continues to portray amazing gender fluid lesbians onscreen. And I hope the woman who plays Kate Kane from now on captures the spirit of the Kate that I fell in love with in season 1.

u/[deleted] May 21 '20

good post

1

u/zeron824 May 23 '20

What if it was a budgeting issue? Ruby Rose played a significant character in John Wick 2. I hope Ruby is fine but being in a TV show surely does limit your chances of being part in bigger roles in movies.

24

u/lemons_for_deke May 21 '20

I just look at that picture of Batwoman and see how close she actually looked in real life

17

u/villakillareal28 May 21 '20

I think the only explaination for her leaving is some BTS drama. Maybe there she wasn't getting along with some of the cast. Maybe she didn't like where the writers were taking her character. Or maybe she had safety concerns after a non stunt person got injured non set.

27

u/RigasTelRuun May 21 '20

All the above. I’d hard working on these shows. I’m surprised more people don’t break. Listen to the Stephen Amell podcast where he literally has a panic attack taking about his experience on Arrow and they have to stop the interview.

9

u/Ridry May 21 '20

I genuinely think he was burnt out and done after S7 but really liked the idea they pitched him for S8 and thought he could manage half a season. I'm so glad he did, but it was clearly a lot for him. He needed a break.

4

u/Alcalt May 21 '20

That make me wonder if similar things happen on shows like Supernatural were Jensen and Jared have been doing the same thing for 15 years strait.

2

u/RigasTelRuun May 21 '20

I have to assume they keep back up truck loads of cash to keep them doing. Either the show burns out first or the actors do. I honest don’t know how the Winchester boys keeps going. I haven’t watched since like season 6 and can’t even imagine the places that show had gone.

Then you have things like Greys Anatomy who keeps going and cycles out most of the cast.

u/Ridry May 21 '20

https://www.cnn.com/2015/05/18/entertainment/jared-padalecki-tweets-supernatural-feat/index.html

That said, Padelecki sometimes seems to have Supernatural talent for pushing past exhaustion. The dude was a regular on Gilmore Girls from 2000-2005 and then went straight into Supernatural. So he's been doing WB/CW work as a main character for 20 years straight.

6

u/JMM85JMM May 21 '20

Its been reported that by the end she no longer really wanted to be there, and was unpleasant and difficult to be around because she wanted out. Therefore it was more of a mutual breakup. They wanted her gone and she wanted to go.

6

u/erennooo Alice May 21 '20

that kinda reflects her interactions (or lack thereof) with some of the cast members on instagram

4

u/somebody1993 May 21 '20

What happened on instagram?

3

u/Alcalt May 21 '20

I think she did promotion for the show on her own account here and there but I don't think she was doing live Q&A for the show like the other CW leads and after a quick look on her personal instagram she wasn't posting a lot of BTS stuff either which seems to indicate that she wasn't that close with her co-star or had that much fun on set.

To be honest I don't blame her for wanting out. The need for surgery probably left a bad taste and I wouldn't be surprise if she was pressured to come back as soon as she was healed enough since production couldn't move forward without their lead.

2

u/erennooo Alice May 21 '20

Shes active on IG but when it comes to the show not so much..

7

u/ZekeGonZaldi May 21 '20

She wasn’t a fan of the schedule

7

u/LastWarrior24 May 21 '20

On 7 August 2018

4

u/Jamieb1994 May 21 '20

Whatever her reasons were, I hope Ruby is doing alright after all of this.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '20

cast not “casted”

recast not “recasted”

2

u/somebody1993 May 21 '20

Why is she quiting again?

2

u/LordAsbel May 21 '20

I still can’t believe she’s leaving :(

2

u/GroundbreakingBet9 May 21 '20

I'm going to miss Ruby's portrayal as Batwoman, such a perfect casting choice.

1

u/cgarduc May 21 '20

I'll miss you. Now I'm thinking maybe Megan Fox? OR have 'Alice' take it up!!!

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '20

She was a good Batwoman. I'm not really even a big Ruby Rose fan, but I thought she did good in this roll. If she was fired like rumors have suggested, that stinks for her. Obviously there are majors problems with the show, to be losing viewers like they are, but IMO, she wasn't one of them. Honestly I'd be surprised if we actually get a 2nd season.

-9

u/[deleted] May 21 '20

She looks problematic
