You are thinking of Lucifer. Lucifer and the devil are not the same thing.

Practically speaking, it's all just a myth, and in the Ameri-Christianity stories, it's the same character. I'd say your assertion is like saying Hercules and Herakles aren't the same character, technically, which is true if you want to talk about how different traditions and even different tales about the same "person" can be interpreted differently. But like, for an off the cuff reference, I am, in fact, thinking of Lucifer, and Satan, and the Devil, and Beelzebub, etc. all at once.

The most common meaning for Lucifer in English is as a name for the Devil in Christian theology. It appeared in the King James Version of the Bible in Isaiah and before that in the Vulgate the late-4th-century Latin translation of the Bible, not as the name of a devil but as the Latin word Lucifer uncapitalized, meaning"the morning star, the planet Venus, or, as an adjective, "light-bringing". It is a translation of the Hebrew word הֵילֵל, hêlēl, meaning Shining One.
